He has the body and technique to score inside but in his mind he lack feel for the game and some assertiveness and that make him also bad defensive player and also also on offense he could strugle when team will decide to take him seriously...

Playing nba is unique because of the heavy program. Baynes has had limited opportunities on court but is clearly being groomed. Duncan is great but old and needs rests. All Baynes is required for is to give Duncan that time off. I remember Luc Longley in his first years in the NBA ; he copped the same flak but see where he ended up. Baynes is a true big who can block a lane and learn to play the post at the top of the key. His critics are ill informed.

Remember he has only played 84 games total in the NBA, now averaging 10 mpg. Basketball Reference has him at 10 rbg and 15 ppg if he were playing 36 minutes. I think he's getting better with every game experience. Another inexpensive, but solid, rotation player found by the Spurs.

The majority of people who argued that baynes should be let go wanted the open roster spot to sign whoever. But i do think some people argued that he wasn't worth the minimum. I don't know it they were serious.

From Pop :
"It's of major importance, so Timmy doesn't have to get too many minutes," Popovich said. "I don't know about Tiago's situation. We're very confused by it, but Baynsie is saving us."
Hmmm we are all confused by Splitter's long and everlasting severe injuries, maybe he will catch Rose eventually ?

I was sort of in that camp. I was more annoyed about the dragging out of the process, though it may have been the Spurs wanting to bring him back on a cheap 2 year deal than on Baynes side.
He has been very solid of late. I've been critical of him (he still does foul a ton, 3 per game while playing half the minutes of the second highest Spur in that category, Leonard) My hope has been that he can develop into a cheap 15 mpg type of guy. He's been that so far. Bonner will still be needed in certain series but Baynes can provide some solid minutes against some playoff teams.

It was pretty clear the Spurs offered something more than the QO, and I didn't think he was going to get any more here or in Europe. I just wanted the drama to be over. He was allowed to test the market and didn't find much at all. Glad he is doing well.

As I suspected, these mysterious people aren't very identifiable or countable. I don't think we'll be able to find a whole lot of people that didn't want him back for the modest raise that he got. Most of us just didn't want to over-pay or have him signed to a two year deal that messed with next year's options. Baynes is making his modest raise look like a bargain. Hope it continues.

We don't know what or how much Baynes was or was not offered except the one he ultimately received. People were very fond of pretending that no news meant that nothing was happening. They would then fantasize an actual bargaining position and make judgments off of it. There are also many who think it makes good business sense to demand the lowball offer no matter what.
It became quite asinine after Baynes played very well in the Worlds and anyone who thought a raise was in order was defamed. Excommunicado. Go to my thread and I list them there.

Offensively Baynes is not far away from Splitter right now, Tiago "only" sets more accurate screens and passes the ball better, but for our needs right now Baynes delivers what is needed. The defense however is another thing. I really wish Tiago could return in two weeks when the schedule toughens up quite a bit.

This did not happen. As a matter of fact, The Spurs came out early and publicly with a comment that they would match any reasonable offer. The only fantasy that took place, and is apparently still taking place, is the one where The Spurs were demanding that he accept the QO. Again, you will be hard-pressed to find any viable group that were suggesting that as a plank in their platform. It's a strawman. Also, it was quite obvious that his suitors would possibly be non-NBA / foreign, and that these deals would not be as transparent as a formal competing offer from another NBA team. China was rumored most frequently. Almost none of what you suggest transpired. And, if you do find a poster here or there that suggested something like that, they would be in an EXTREME minority, and probably not someone that would be considered a staple around ST. If you look hard enough, you can find someone that believes just about anything. That doesn't make their opinion mainstream, common, informed, or reasonable.

Yes, a link to a thread where basically everyone is saying pay him more only if you have to. I read that thread as it transpired. Don't bid against yourself. Pretty simple. The Spurs didn't have to bid against themselves, Baynes came back, and he's not on the books next year, just like The Spurs probably wanted from the beginning. If they bid against themselves, 2 million, and his Chinese offer comes in at 2.6 to lure him away, The Spurs just cost themselves .5 million for no reason. A half million here and there. Pretty soon it begins to add up to real money.
Again, he's back, for one year, on a salary they can live with. I would say they played it just right.
And, those saying we should have just thrown more money at him without knowing details of any counter offers were wrong. Just worrying he would "get away", luckily The Spurs had cooler heads.
Pretty much everyone wanted him back under the right conditions. He wasn't some martyr that was getting thrown under the bus as you imply. That's Ayres. Your boy Baynes has been worshipped in comparison.

:lol People said straight out it was on principle. There were like 6 of them and I cast them out. If you didn't say that then fine but it's about time you shut up about 'no one said that.' They did very clearly.
You seem to be the type that does not understand that the Spurs organization does and encourages their players to negotiate outside of the media. Just because you didn't hear of other offers doesn't mean they didn't happen. And again none of you talked about his performance in the worlds. He performed well which in a meritocracy means he should be rewarded.

You still can't point to a significant group of ST posters that didn't want him back, because that group doesn't exist.
The overwhelming majority were eager to get him back. So eager, many people were calling for The Spurs to bid against themselves to get him back before FA was over. Luckily, cooler heads prevailed.
And his international play was mentioned in that thread. But, I, and maybe others, discount it. Playing well against generally inferior competition doesn't over-excite me. It was great that he did well, but it is what it is. He is an almost 30 year old dude. If he's not at his ceiling, he's near it. And, most importantly, that international play didn't bring any big offers that The Spurs couldn't match, unless Baynes gave up a whole lot of money we don't know about. So, all the scouts and GMs in the world saw that play and were unmoved to any significant degree. I don't think we here are too much off the mark in our estimation of it, either. His not getting picked up by another team corroborates that.
And, you're fighting windmills arguing he's better than Ayres. I never said he wasn't. I actually said, all things equal, I would go with him over Ayres. But, so what? Most basketball players are better basketball players than Ayres. That's no feather to stick in your cap.
He's just not THAT much better than Ayres, and despite all the laughing at Exstatic's take on Ayres, he has shown some solid numbers where Ayres is even better than Baynes in some aspects. So did a Project Spurs piece. It's just a fact. Overall, I still think Baynes is better for several reasons, but he is what he is.

You were wrong demonstrably by the contract he received and because of your assertion of being harsh bottomline capitalist as the ideal negotiating tactic. Someone such as yourself would never have the chance to get star players to sign for less than market value. You claim to understand that the Spurs operate differently and whine about 'smug condescension' but you don't eat your feedback. You blithely continue your same narrative ignoring your current admission of ignorance to substantive facts.
I'm sensitive to accuracy. I never said no one wanted him back although I certainly did not rule it out either. You like to talk of strawman so I think some introspection is in order.
I said there were people that wanted to lowball him and made unknowable assumptions on the negotiations to make their lowballing justified. I have no interest in arguing intent like 'wanting him gone' for such activities because those such as yourself dissemble as it is quite easy to do. Try and keep up.
You sure seem intent on applying qualitative descriptions to the size of pro versus con in outlook to Baynes. You have already been demonstrated wrong on this subject with your previous position. I quoted 6 people doing what you claimed no one did. Now you waffle some more and have moved to a mythical amount of people that wanted to overpay him. Of course I am going to be condescending to such shitty sophistry.
And spare me your shitty emotional qualitative generalities. Baynes has earned the trust of Popovich to integrate him significantly into the rotation with starters. You can tell yourself that he is 'not that much better than Ayers' if it makes you feel better but to me it just looks like doubling down on stupidity.
I get it; you are butthurt because you were demonstrated to be wrong and now are desperate to save face. It's pretty typical but you would be better served to have some dignity and just let it go. If you want to continue though I will be more than happy to rub your face in it some more.

You have no clue what offers his agent did or did not get. You can fixate on a rumor you heard and wave your hands at it to try and make sense of things but it holds no merit. Your deductive skills are shitty especially when you base them on shitty assumptions.
You claim to understand this when I bring it up but comments like your quote belie that claim.
What you think he is worth is besides the point. He is earning his salary with his current production. 16 PER at 18 mpg is what it is.

Based upon your understanding, unlikely. Good use of vocabulary, actually. The rest of it, pretty ridiculous comprehension and construction. We'll just leave it at that. Good luck to you.

So grammar smack because I don't use commas correctly in my dependent clauses?
:lol grammar smack is always the bastion of the loser in an argument. You cannot argue on substance so you whine when I use an adverbial phrase without commas. I argue that they are dependent clauses and need no additional punctuation.

Let's review:
LC said that no one said to let Baynes go when in fact that there were 6 people who were very clearly willing to do just that if he did not accept the QO. He even admitted that he supported such an approach himself. He now has surrendered that position and is trying to claim that Baynes having supporters should lend him sympathy. He is now the victim.
LC has no clue of the full breadth of negotiations between Baynes and any club; however, that does not deter him from making declarations assuming his knowledge was the whole of reality.
:lol China rumors
LC wants the Spurs to take a hard ball approach despite knowledge about Spurs corporate culture that speaks to them not behaving that way. Point in case is Patty Mills getting a multiyear deal despite a rotator cuff tear as well as our stars taking less than corporate value. I just love fans that want to play GM and then bash the team when they don't go along with their decisions.
Fortunately for us, the Spurs decided not do as LC and the excommunicate wanted. Baynes was retained and we are enjoying watching him play much, much better than Ayers.

He obviously has more of a mid range game than Tiago. Tiago is just a more skilled and smarter player at this point.
Heck... he might even have a better shot than Duncan.

The jumpshot is all good and chit. But the big problem with it is..
THERE IS NO BIG BANGING!
I like it when he gets in there and you know the opponent coach is scared Baynes will fall over and crash one of his star players.
...and dat dunk. Dunk of the year easy for the spurs. He chucked it in the defenses face. If that was Duncan or someone else that would be top play of the week.

Seriously, what the hell is going on?
Pop is coaching as bad as 2010-11.
He's clearly healthy enough to play. Why on earth, during his best season in his short career, when he's clearly getting better and is already good enough to play, is he getting Splittered on the bench?
Memphis was probably the team he was most made for playing against. And Portland isn't too far behind, they weren't playing little stretch fours. All big, even without Lopez. Hell, Baynes had a great game in the playoffs against Portland in the damn playoffs!
Did I miss some big news? Did Baynes get ebola-mumps AND choke Pop out like PJ?

I'm with you, tbh... at least put him in and see what happens... I think he's enamored with the stretch 4 against those team... but Portland didn't even have Lopez...
To me, it's starting to look like since Tiago came back, he's eating Baynes minutes. Which would be a disgrace, tbh... he should get all of Matty's minutes.

Baynes is anything but soft. Low Basketball IQ, maybe, unathletic, maybe, but his own teammates have to sometimes sit him out in practice due to his physicality in scrimmages.
Don't get it. Reduction in minutes bc of Splitters return is fine but not DNPs. He earned a place in the rotation imo.

Baynes IQ is the size of a peanut. That being said, there's no reason for Bonner to be getting minutes over him

Pop was super mad at baynes for a certain play late in the fourth against Portland a few nights ago.
Kawhi passed the ball to baynes for a dribble hand off..Told him to wait but Baynes opted to drive. Pop was furious..
no big deal though..It's probably just pop playing mind games..Want him to know his place.

I think Pop doesn't trust Baynes to guard really talented bigs and in the last two games we've faced Gasol, Randolph, and Aldridge. We also knew the return of Splitter would cut massively into his court time.
I'm just guessing on Pop's motivations of course. Who knows how his mind works.

Disappointing to not see him play, especially with Bonner getting minutes, but in reality, Tim was playing well, and Tiago was playing as well as Tiago plays, so where would he fit in?
Corey Joseph is playing really well. He had 7 assists and 1 TO last night to go along with 8 rebounds and 10 points. He's cutting in the middle really well too.
My biggest issue is Marco hoisting up 14 shots to get 10 points, never getting to the line, and virtually doing nothing in any other aspect of the game. Marco, to me, is like Bonner: if he's on then keep him in the game, otherwise its like we're playing 6 on 4.

12-20-2014, 11:54 AM
so where would he fit in?
Tiago and Tim usually start, when Pop isn't drunk like he's been the past couple games. You'd rather have Diaw and Boner coming off the bench?

Baynes can't play with Splitter. They almost hit heads yesterday.
