I'm not even a Pats fan.. But 4 rings and EVERY major post-season passing record... And only player ever with 6 SB appearances.. And in BOTH of those SB losses, he gave his team the lead with less than 3 minutes left, before the D let the Giants score...

Exactly. And Brady led his team down the field and scored to give his team the lead in both SB losses.. the D just couldn't stop NYG from scoring (thanks in large part to two ridiculous catches and 1 Welker drop). Brady could easily be 6-0 right now if not for those miraculous plays/Welker drop.

Not to mention Montana was throwing to the greatest WR of all time. I just think overall what Brady has done gives him the GOAT title. Either way, it'll be a good topic of discussion for a long time.

Brady played in an era for inflated passing numbers.

Montana played in an era where defenses were physically not equipped or capable of handling West Coast Offenses. Literally had mismatches that teams did not know how to handle, or didn't have the personnel to handle.

Brady has the longevity on his side, but he's also played in an era where the QB has every imaginable advantage especially compared to previous eras. Who's to say he would have been as durable when the rules aren't so much on his side. He's a great QB, arguably top two, but the only advantage he has on Montana is longevity.

Bullshit. Those Bears, Redskins, and Giants defenses in the 80s always had answers for the Niners offense. And they could do whatever they wanted with the rules back then. The NFL wasn't pussified until the mid 2000s when Peyton demanded the rules get changed.

And modern era defenses are much bigger, faster, stronger athletes that QBs have to deal with. The speed of the game in general is faster now than ever before, despite the protection of QBs, due to faggot teams like the Steelers who intentionally try to hurt opposing QBs because anyone knows if you lose your starting QB, your season is almost certainly over.

But the Giants kicked the Niners ass in the playoffs in back to back years and eliminated them in 1990.

And offenses have dominated more than ever. The passing game has exploded, spread offenses have played a big part in this league the last few seasons and the athletes are also bigger and faster on the offensive side.

Exactly my point. Despite having a system that teams were not equipped to defend, when adversity struck, Montana struggled like anyone else does. He wasn't unstoppable, unflappable, and NEVER put mediocre talent on his back the way Brady or Manning has had to through large chunks of their careers.

And as teams got equipped to defend them, they started flaming out early each year. So I don't get what makes Montana so unquestionably better than Brady.

I don't know. Two lucky ass wins (2001 and this one) and two chokes, not sure about that at all.

If the Rams won like they should have, I think there was a chance that Brady gets benched during or after the following season when the Patriots didn't even make the playoffs. From that point, he may not have ever won a super bowl. It's a very fine line. He's a much better player now then he was then though, but he got all the chances he needed to work on it with a great team around him.

Montana's still number 1 to me and also a few other quarterbacks were great, but unfortunately they didn't get to play in or win as many super bowls as Brady. I still think Kurt Warner was the better quarterback between the two in the 2001 super bowl.

They had lucky shit happen time after time during that first run. Adam Vinatieri was the MVP of that first Superbowl and possibly that whole playoff run.

Brady didn't play as well as you're saying in those two Superbowls against the Giants. That's one of the reasons why they lost. He wasn't playing one of his better games in either or those superbowls. I seem to recall them bringing up excuses about his ankle after one of them.

No, they won back to back in 1988 and 1989 after losing to the Giants in 86 and 87 and reached the NFC Title game in 1990 and lost on a last second FG after Montana was knocked out of the game and basically missed the following season and benched in 1992. However, he gets traded to the Chiefs and carries them to the AFC Title game in his first year at the age of 38 :lol

Pretty pedestrian today. Lots of the yardage was Vereen and Edelman after the catch. Two AWFUL interceptions (not tipped balls).

That said while he wasn't the MVP tonight, he's cemented himself ahead of the rest of his generation once and for all. Peyton is Karl Malone with a ring by default because he faced Rex Grossman in the Super Bowl.

Simply not the case, especially if you consider Montana has never thrown an INT

If Lynch breaks an extra tackle and sneaks into the end zone, the story line tomorrow is "Tom did not play well enough to break his Super Bowl losing streak". His 2 INTs were quite bad.

Joe: 4 perfect games, his final 3 SB's totaled 985 yards + 10 TDs

I usually agree, but 18-1 was such a gigantic choke that it has to be held against Brady. Other than that, it's really the fact that defense was allowed in Montana's era and that it took Brady six Super Bowls to break a touchdown record that Montana set in four that puts Montana way ahead of Brady.

Marino is the best pure passer I've seen and he'd rocco siffredi the league with the modern rules.

Montana will always be number 1 in my book. He just had a grace or coolness under fire that no one has matched since. maybe Eli or Flacco but still not quite.

Brady has done some great things, no doubt, he's definitely the greatest system QB i've ever seen. Tell him what the defense is doing, take a couple psi's off and nigga can get dangerous. Will be real interesting if he ever leaves Belichick's safety net, especially now that they drafted Garafalo.

- Big Ben in the Top 20 is a maybe
- Staubach ahead of Aikman

this is the golden age of quarterbacking though. the rule changes are obviously a huge part of it, but the game has also evolved with time regardless of the rules.

Montana >>>>>>>>>>>> Brady. That was already set in stone in 2007.

They're tied in rangs - like Kobe and Jim. You are basically admitting that Kobe >>>>> Duncan:

1) Kobe has the better h2h playoff record (when both played)
2) Kobe 3peated vs. Duncan never even repeated
3) Kobe then repeated without a HOF player by his side (vs no repeats from Duncan)

Kobe's 5 is more impressive than Duncan's 5.

Look I respect Joe Cool but I think now with the 4 plus the other two SB appearances, I am giving the edge to Brady. I dont get how 4-0 > 4-2. Brady has his team in contention every year even AFTER losing HOF mates such as McGinest and BRushi. He never has had a Jerry Rice just a couple brilliant Moss and Gronk seasons. We may hate Brady's pretty boy swag but he is the GOAT QB ...

Montana - 11 TD passes 0 interceptions in 4 superbowls. It took Brady 6 superbowls to break his TD passing record.

That doesn't prove that Montana is indisputably a superior football player to Tom Brady.

you want him to prove that he disagrees?

No, I want him to prove his blanket statement that Montana is superior to Brady.

No, I want him to prove his blanket statement that Montana is superior to Brady.

So in the NBA we have cats arguing that due to more complex defense, better athletes modern science and anlytics that today's players are superior to the 80's legends ... but in the NFL, Montana's 4 is better than Brady's 4-2? I get it's a team sport but the hypocrisy of this site and the inconsistency of arguments is befuddling. Basically the group think praises or shits on certain players and not even rings seems to shift the dynamic. Makes little sense to me but I am old school. Winning titles is the ultimate measuring stick regardless of the sport.

Phillip
02-02-2015, 11:45 AM
No, they won back to back in 1988 and 1989 after losing to the Giants in 86 and 87 and reached the NFC Title game in 1990 and lost on a last second FG after Montana was knocked out of the game and basically missed the following season and benched in 1992. However, he gets traded to the Chiefs and carries them to the AFC Title game in his first year at the age of 38 :lol

After their first couple, they flamed out early for 3 straight years, but had some young talent developing, so that by time they went back to back, they were pretty loaded and could simply out-talent other teams. Those first two SBs were clearly a result of a system teams were not well equipped to defend against. The second two were simply stacked squads, with a bunch of really good to great players in Rice, Taylor, Craig, Rathman, Romanowski, Haley, Lott, etc... that team was simply loaded. No different than Brady's early squads who were loaded with defensive talent, and of course he won 3 in 4 years.

And let's not act like the KC team was awful or something. They had like 4-5 pro bowlers that year, and quite a few other solid players, including former or soon-to-be pro bowlers. Him and Brady have pretty much had comparable stretches of teams over their careers.

From the statistical aspect, Brady has noticeably superior stats (some of which are due to adjustments in the game, but they are still NOTABLY better), along with a better winning % in both the regular season and the playoffs.
From a physical ability aspect, Brady had more longevity, is physically bigger and stronger, with a stronger throwing arm and arguably has the best pocket presence/patience of any QB ever, while Joe would run a bit more.
From an accomplishments aspect, Brady has 2 more Pro Bowl seasons, while Joe had 1 more All-Pro season (Brady played in an era with WAY MORE elite QBs though, in particular Peyton), both have 2 MVPs, 4 SB wins, and 3 SB MVPs, but Brady led his team to 2 more SB appearances.
From an intangible aspect, both are fantastic winners, and highly clutch, but Brady actually has more 4th quarter comebacks and game winning drives in both regular season and post season. And then theres the AV rating (which is a rating system that shows the approximate value of a player to their teams success) which Brady also bests Montana at.

So what I want proven to me is... what makes Joe UNQUESTIONABLY better than Brady, as so many people want to claim?

Phillip

Some people just seem to struggle to accept change. Fact is, there will constantly be bigger and better players coming out as time progresses. In about 15-20 years, there will probably be some QBs that will then be having arguments as being superior to Brady, while Montana will have been generally forgotten about by then, and the chain will keep going on and on. I just refuse to defend a player simply because of some pointless emotional attachment to an era of players. If a player is superior, then they are simply superior, no arguments needed.

Personally, I think Brady > Montana by a bit, but I can see both sides. I just can't see how people can make a blanket statement that Montana is superior with no questions asked. That is an incredibly narrow-minded point of view.

Normally I'd say it's the QB that makes the receiver, but Jerry Rice was a sick freak of nature that he's the exception to the rule, imo. I have yet to see anyone better at taking a five yard pass and turn it into an 80 yard TD.

I read a stupid article once that if you were to split Jerry's career into two by going odd and even years, that it would be enough top make two Hall of Fame caliber careers.

Brady choked away an undefeated season and Super Bowl with Moss, one of the greatest wide receivers ever. He also had a stacked defense for his first three rings and played the Struggle Wilson role. Let's not act like he hasn't had any help.

Also, Elway over Montana is an even shittier take. He was a career choker (like Fivehead) until Denver cheated their asses off in a desperate attempt to get him some rings as a TOSB. Losing Super Bowls by 19, 32 and 45 points (the last ass-whooping coming against Montana's team) eliminates him from the GOAT discussion.

That first Super Bowl, the 49ers had a 20-0 halftime lead and had to hold on for a 26-21 win. Montana had 150+ yards passing.
The Bungles had four turnovers and still almost pulled it out.

You're right. The 86 and 89 Broncos were better according to Pro Football Reference, but the 87 Browns were clearly the best in the AFC that season. The only reason they didn't have homefield is the Broncos finished half a game better due to a tie.

Moving goal posts now I see. Avante school of debating

How?

- Superior numbers

Incorrect. Brady > Montana in yards, TD, completion %, QB rating, TD%, INT%, Sack%, AV rating, and more.

- Superior record

Incorrect.

Regular Season
Brady - 160-47
Montana - 117-47

Post season
Brady - 21-8
Montana - 16-7

- Superior opponents (Anderson, Marino, Elway & Boomer)

Inconclusive and perhaps even blatantly incorrect. (Roethlisberger, Manning, Rivers, Rodgers, Romo, McNabb, Warner)

What's left?

Some evidence that Montana is clearly superior to Brady would be nice.

Sidenote: my favorite QB is Steve Young

Neat.

Brady is rightfully viewed as one of the greatest (I had him Top 3 before) but unless he wins a 5th, losing twice to Eli is his undoing

As great a QB as Montana was he shit the bed in the playoffs as well. From 1985 through '87 he failed to generate a TD in ten consecutive quarters of playoff football and was benched for Steve Young at halftime of the '87 divisional game against Minnesota, a game the 49ers lost at home to a double-digit underdog.

It doesn't matter who we talk about, those listed above or the ones who came later. The best QB to ever play the position in my opinion........Joe Montana. An opinion based on watching all of them play many times. The only one I didn't see play...Otto Graham. But....the caliber of defenders back then, well.

Montana just knew how to run an offense, he was like a master dart thrower, key word...precision. While not an actual runner he was mobile. He had it all, the total package. Watching him play was like watching a concert pianist, he had you mesmerized.

Tom Brady the closest thing to Montana I've seen.

Here's where stats just don't work. Not unlike a boxer with a 20-8 record, not knowing he won his first 20 but has lost his last 8. Montana knew receivers and defenses unlike anyone else. He had....finese.

WTF??? YOU were the one that said Montana had a better record, and I showed that is clearly NOT the case, both in the regular season and the playoffs. Brady had both more total wins, as well as better win percentages. They both have 4 championships as well. So how on earth does Montana have a superior record to Brady in any way, shape, or form???

Brady is rightfully viewed as one of the greatest (I had him Top 3 before) but unless he wins a 5th, losing twice to Eli is his undoing

How is losing to Eli his undoing? In what way does that count as a knock against him, when he and Eli have absolutely nothing to do with each other's performance? I could understand knocking Brady if he struggled to score against some crappy defensive team, but those Giants teams had some solid defenses. But knocking him for losing to a QB? Please explain how that is Brady's fault, when in BOTH games he led his team to a late drive and score to take a lead, and the Patriots defense was the unit that allowed Eli to accomplish the final drives with virtually no time left for Brady to accomplish anything? And this doesn't even include the wide open, dropped pass by Welker that almost certainly would have sealed the victory in the second game.

Give me Montana, Marino, Elway, Kelly, Fouts, Theisman, Anderson, Boomer, Cunningham and Moon over those you listed

Cool. I'm happy you prefer them. It still does not prove in any way how Montana is clearly > Brady as you claim. Still awaiting explanation.

No one asked for a reward for getting to the super bowl. Just that to knock Brady for getting to 2 more SBs than Montana did is incredibly stupid. What's the difference between losing there, and losing in a divisional round game? A loss is a loss.

If anything, there is a better argument that those 2 additional appearances is better than not having them at all, since he won 4 already. Fact is, if you got there, that means you generally beat 2, if not 3 really good football teams to get there. Any playoff win you get in football is quite an accomplishment, considering how difficult it is to win in the playoffs.

So to sum it up, 4-2 =/> 4-0

I understand that is your opinion. You are entitled to that. But you didn't just state it as "In my opinion, Montana is better than Brady." No, you made a blanket statement, that "Montana is better than Brady". By making such a blanket statement, you are saying anyone who believe "Brady is better than Montana" is dead wrong. I used to think people our age didn't appreciate Favre because we only saw him past his prime, but I also don't see what puts him even close to the same category as Montana/Marino/Elway/Brady/Manning etc. He had a long ass career but never had any record breaking seasons (in his 15 year career as a starter he had only 6 seasons with over 4000 passing yards) and it's not like he had a great saga of playoff performances.

You can also go "DURR HURR INTERCEPTIONS" all you want to try and preemptively scoff someone who brings up his interception total, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a stain on his legacy :lol

Montana and Bradshaw also have 4 SB rings each, and they never lost a SB.

Montana had that TD record in 4 Superbowls you are correct, took Brady 6 to get that record and he lost twice. I would say Montana has the edge there obviously. Brady though overall body of work is up there, way up there. Bradshaws stats were not that great but he did win, had dominant D's and a great RB and two great WR's to boot, he had some help with that Steel Curtain behind him but he was a mad man throwing that ball down the field.

Clark and maybe a couple Olineman. Ill have to double check. Even 12 total HOFs is a major stretch. 49ers don't have 12 players in HOF in Franchise History

And that noob was lobbing insults at me

I just checked on the Niners website. Only Rice, Fred Dean, Lott, Walsh, and Young made the Hall of Fame.

Maybe some others made it but went into the hall with other teams? Or does it not work like baseball?

http://www.49ers.com/team/history/hall-of-famers.html

they have 14 hall of famers according to their website. most were pre-montana and only rice was on offense during his time.

Tell me more about how losing Super Bowls is just like winning them

Kaepernick and Grossman are Elite Quarterbacks!

I'm curious as well. Who made that claim? I know I certainly didn't, but if someone did, they are nearly as stupid as you.

If the 49ers were in the AFC, they would have played in 10 straight Super Bowls (1981-1991)
and if my aunt had a dick she'd be my uncle

winning a superbowl is a bigger accomplishment than making one. making a superbowl is certainly a bigger accomplishment than getting knocked out before it

Between 1981 and 1990, the only teams to make the Super Bowl from AFC and not lose to 49ers were Raiders and the embarrassed Patriots.

So yah Montana would have most likely played in 10 straight Super Bowls

of course he can't :lol

they pretty close tbh but I'd still give the edge to Joe... at the end he played in an era much tougher for QBs, his numbers are below TB but in Joe's era, less TDs were scored, rules protected less offense tbh but I can see both side of the argument

Carroll calls any play other than the one he called and this thread doesn't exist. Sorry but I can't call a guy that can't throw beyond 10 yds the best QB of all-time.

Why so butthurt over Joe Cool.

He played 30 games as a Chief leading them to their farthest Postseason finish since 1969 and retiring as atleast the Chiefs second greatest Quarterback. You should be idolizing the guy like every Chiefs fan I've ever met does.

Funny how that logic didn't apply to your Niners when you spent an entire offseason insisting that they were a better team than the Giants, even after the Giants beat your ass in the NFC title game and won the Super Bowl.

No issues with Joe whatsoever.

I simply just asked for evidence as to how you can make a "factual" statement that Montana is better than Brady.

funny how life works. if Lynch just runs a fucking yard, I doubt Brady's dinking and dunking would be enough to tie with 20 seconds left. Instead you would hear stuff like "well Brady is still 0-3 since spygate" etc...NE should really consider building a statue for Carroll.

Why didn't Montana make more Superbowl games? Because he lost in earlier rounds. Far less impressive

When saying stuff like this, you've got to look at the level of competition in both the NFC and AFC and analyze how those teams stack up to the teams that made the Superbowl on the other side of the conference. Who says that the team that loses the Superbowl was the second best team that season? Maybe the two best teams were in the NFC? So even if the 49ers (for example) lost to the Superbowl winner from the NFC, that doesn't mean they were worse than the team that made the Superbowl in the AFC and lost.

To be fair, the NFC was a far superior conference from the mid to late 80s to the first half of the 90s.

If this is correct, then that is the point that I'm trying to make. Making more Superbowls doesn't always necessarily mean more if you only won the same amount as the player you're comparing to. You have to look at other factors such as how strong the conferences were.

If Welker catches a routine pass, Brady would already have 4.

What the fuck with this dinking and dunking BS tbh ?

Brady has been smart enough to play what the defense gave him all night long... why dude would throw long passes against sherman and co when this is what Seahawks was waiting for ?

A great player is a player who plays the way his team needs him to play to win if it's less sexy than throwing 30-40 yds passes who cares

If there is 2 minutes to go in the game and we are down by 4 on our 5 yard line and I can call in any QB to win this for me......Joe Montana. He is the best I've ever seen, and it has nothing to do with Superbowls***

Dan Marino better than 95% of all QB's, and he has no SB success.

*** Terry Bradshaw was no Dan Fouts.

Fat ol fuck with the lack of football knowledge bads.

Regular season last minute drives, it's not even close: Peyton.

If you need a game winning drive in the playoffs: Brady. Elway a close second.
