Where do Manu and Tony rank on that list? Top 10? Top 5?
On a non-spurs board, I saw non-spurs fans listing either/or/both Manu and Tony as top 5 penetrators in the league!
I would say they are both great, but I do think Tony's a little more one-dimensional still in his offense. First off, he is a driver not a slasher. His lack of a consistent midrange jumpshot makes it harder for him to drive because guys are learning to back off of him and dare him to shoot. Once Tony gets a consistent jumpshot his drives will get even easier. His shooting percentages testify that he gets to the rack pretty easily even considering that defenders can back off of him.
Manu has range, and is an adequate mid-range guy, though he is very capable of going all the way and drawing fouls. I think he is more capable as a slasher/driver because he relies less on quickness and can't be treated as a one-dimensional offensive player.
So in conclusion, I think you could be the best slasher/driver in the world, but if guys back off you 10 feet you are going to have a hard time getting anywhere against a solid defensive team, whereas a player (like Kobe) who will kill you if you back off him, becomes a GREAT driver then because of his offensive arsenal.
my top 5
1. kobe
2. AI (he is a great scorer but shoots a low percentage)
3. Nash
4.Manu
5.Wade
