Win 6 for David West. ©

For West and LMA and Timmy and Manu. Could be their last hurrah. But if they win, they may try one more time for the repeat with the same team. And they'll be hungry this year b/c they know they blew a golden (state) opp to repeat last year. Pop won't go for 70 wins but certainly for the #1 seed b/c he got soft last year and knows how tough the West is losing to the pathetic Knicks which cost us the #2 seed. Hell, if the basketball gods were kinder we could have been going for :lobt2::lobt2::lobt2::lobt2: in a row.

Dear Lebron James,

Of course you are the best player in the solar system, no doubt.....

But for one season, you shall contemplate this song:

(Good for you to learn some humility, Sir James, haha)

"Drive"

who's gonna tell you when
it's too late
who's gonna tell you things
aren't so great
you can't go on
thinking nothing's wrong
who's gonna drive you home tonight

who's gonna pick you up
when you fall
who's gonna hang it up
when you call
who's gonna pay attention
to your dreams
who's gonna plug their ears
when you scream

you can't go on
thinking nothing's wrong
who's gonna drive you home tonight

who's gonna hold you down
when you shake
who's gonna come around
when you break

YOU (yes you) can do this too.....

Next year......

All I need is a few hours in front of PATFO and I can show them my congressional campaign plan on how the Spurs can field an All Star team EVERY year b/c Texans won't have to pay federal income taxes. Think I'm kidding? Go to http://www.projectfreedomusa.org/ and tell them your trying to contact the State Director for Texas. West sacrificed $11 million (!) in declining his option with the Pacers and signing in San Antonio for the minimum — about $4 million less than Washington was ready to pay, and $2 million less than Golden State offered, per several league sources.

Duncan is 40 years old will likely average 25MPG and sit out b2bs. Diaw is also going to be 34 years old. These guys will be managed accordingly. West helps with depth.

I don't get how west fits. He's too small to play center and will only take away minutes from diaw who is IMO the better system fit.

Other than helping the team's depth, David West won't put this transcendental and holy franchise to shame in the way Baynes and Tiago did whenever Blake Griffin or other players tried to break the rim with their dunks.

I don't think they'll cut LaLanne unless he both sucks and is insistent on staying over. They seem really excited by him. Bonner may be back as the sixth big, but I hope not.

Bonner has to go. It's been nice but now that we have all the spacing we need with the starters + 4, the space at the end of the bench is being wasted. the Spurs really need to start developing a young big man draft pick, even if it's in Austin. If they believe the drafted rookie has a future at the 5, then if they can bring him over "then do it" as Uncle Rico would say. That way LMA won't need to play the 5.

He really put his money where his mouth is. He's giving up at least $5 million after taxes.

Of course, Texas has no state income taxes but just think how many future HOF players would come here if they didn't have to pay FEDERAL income taxes. It's possible and the Spurs could field an All Star team every year. Tell PATFO to contact me via http://www.projectfreedomusa.org/ where I am the state director for Texas. I'll meet with them to show how I can help make that happen.

Midrange which now teams forgot gonna be in use....

It's possible the added advantage we'll have to being able to shoot the mid-range is that teams have forgotten how to defend it. And since no one else can do it the teams won't get enough practice time to acclimate themselves to it when the schedule has them playing us.

David West turning LeBum down for SA...Not just the fact that West came to SA, but the fact that he turned down THE NBA to come to SA... It means more than a title or player pickup, and more significant than signing LMA...Best Christmas EVER.

How the fuck is this fair.
The Spurs are that model guy at the country club who looks like such a dick but then buys your grandma drinks while helping save 3 children from drowning and then goes onto the greens and hits an eagle while drinking a regular Arnold Palmer because drinking is against his beliefs, all the while pulling every single girl's phone number but still managing to take them out on a nice date instead of just fucking them like we all know he could.

I'm still not sold.
They still lack a lot of size - Duncan and Aldridge are their biggest players but Duncan is older and LA operates away from the basket.
I know small ball is in, but I think if they run into a bigger team like the grizz, pelicans, or even the mavs, and have to face a team like the 76ers in the finals, their lack of size might be exploited.

Teams are gonna have to sag way into the paint to contend with Diaw's playmaking and West's post game...oh, but then you have Patty Mills and Manu Ginobili just licking their chops on the perimeter.

I don't think the season is going to be the cakewalk that some people are predicting, but gottamn am I excited to see the dynamics of this team on the floor.

CaptainLate

TD averaged 29 mpg. I guess Pop will try to lower that. But that leaves only 67 min for 3 bigs. I'm guessing LA won't want to play any less than 33. If Boris plays 24 like he did last year. That only leaves West 9-10 min.

If most of the games are decided by early in the 4Q, then the bench is going to get minutes whether LMA wants 33 or not. It was reported one reason he wanted to be here was to extend his career. So you may as well start playing 30mpg now when you can. You'll get bigger mpg in the playoffs...maybe. LOL

Bobo & D-West are most likely not going to be paired up against mammoth frontlines. Pop will stagger their minutes so either Tim or LMA will be on the floor. In any case, the Spurs have the best rebounding small forward in the Western Conference & his name is Kawhi.

Spur fan should be really rooting for Parker to regain a modicum of respectability next season and beyond..He's too high in team historically hierarchy to be put in the dog house by Pop assuming he isn't getting traded in near future.. He's no Ginobili, and will probably take a lot more convincing to bench him and significantly reduce his role in the team on permanent basis..

Essentially. Parker is at the point that Duncan reached about the same age when he started to look like he didn't have much left and was close to retirement. Now he's playing until he's 40. Yup. So many fans forget that Parker hasn't had a proper rest in many years, and played much of last season banged up. He's finally getting some rest this summer. I predict a bounceback next year - he'll play a little less, but his efficiency will return.

While I don't think Parker is finished, my general observation is that bigs can play longer than guards given that they are more dependant on length and not speed. Parker can play better, but I would be shocked to see him as an all NBA canidate. On this team, he doesn't have to be.

Parker game has always been speed based, scoring amongst the big men in the paint.
Duncan's game has rarely been based off of speed or athleticism.

D West was that constant that the team needed, especially in the 3rd quarter. Tough defense and solid offense. Best of all, he wanted to win. We needed that junk yard dog since Porter left.

I have to wonder if some of you ever watched David West play before. Or if you saw him at all last season?

West is one of those guys you hate if he's on an opposing team, and (should) love if he's on yours. He's tough, and he plays physical. Not dirty, but hard. He's the closest thing to Mario Elie toughness I remember being in a Spurs jersey since Mario Elie.

The comments about him not playing defense sort of made me smile. People forget the troubles he's given the Spurs on that end in the past. This whole thread reminds me of the year everyone said that Derek Fisher was done, and that he couldn't play ANY defense - and then he came out and just kicked the Spurs' asses with his defense.

Don't base too much on what happened on that damaged Pacers team the last couple of years. West has a lot of gas in the tank, and he'll be one of the players getting minutes in the playoffs. He started all of the 66 games he played in last season, averaged about 29 minutes, and still put up respectable numbers on a team that just didn't play together as a unit. There's absolutely no reason for all the speculation that he's worn out. He isn't. New players always need some time to find their way on the Spurs. Unlike guys like Hedo Turkoglu, I believe West will fully fit in by mid-season at least.

I would not be surprised if they had a handshake about next year when West signed for peanuts this year. I believe he will be even more valuable then, especially if Tim hangs 'em up. West can perform as a leader in a way that I do not see anybody else on the team capable of performing in Tim's absence. Do not misunderstand: I am not saying that he can fill Tim's shoes on the court or in the locker room, but I do not see anybody other than the big 3 as leaders yet for the Spurs TNG. I do not think that LMA is that kind of guy. And we have yet to see if Kawhi is, but he would definitely prefer to lead by actions and not words. If Tim and Manu leave, I think Tony and West could become the de facto leaders.

I have loved this guy and his game since he was a real thorn in our sides playing for the Hornets. I have wanted the Spurs to figure out some way to bring the guy aboard every time he signed a new contract somewhere else. I just wish they would pair him with Aldridge (even though he does not want to play center) and pair Boris and Tim.

How the f*ck does Diva Aldridge get to say that he doesn't want to play center. That dude is ridiculous soft and got roughed up by the Cavs bigs. He couldn't even post up against Love even with his height advantage.

West has been a HUGE "Bang For the Buck" guy. Especially compared to Aldridge. One of the best deals the Spurs have ever made...and West did it willingly. You just gotta love him.

Aldridge had a bad game tonight...but, he's helped give us this great record. Just have to see if he's really got the heart and mindset to be a winner and a champion. That is something he didn't show in Portland. He can score on a lesser team...can he win on a better one?

Well I definitely want to be proved wrong by Aldridge. So far, he does well against non-playoff teams. But do the Spurs really care about that? Anything less that a championship is a failure. So far, I haven't seen that passion. Dude can learn a lot from West.

Last night was his first game as a Spur against really serious championship competition. I wonder what was going through his mind. LMA had gradually (if inconsistently) become more comfortable and somewhat more aggressive against the Spurs' soft schedule to date. But because of its intensity this game represented a reset of sorts. LMA seems to have reverted to early season form - passive, hesitant and deferential. As a member of the Blazers he was not in these kind of regular season games very often - certainly not with 3 or 4 potential HOFers in the lineup, veterans of championship wars, and Pop on the bench. I just wonder what the guy thought about the entire experience, especially in contrast to his entire NBA experience in a very different environment - without HOF teammates or coach. No doubt his Spurs teammates and coaches conducted themselves in a very different way from his former Blazers counterparts. All this on top of the fact that he was not being called on to carry the team.

No, I sound like he is a veteran retooling his game, coming from a career spent entirely on a pretender to a team that is a dynastic contender with a very different culture and a distinctive, demanding system on the court. Subconsciously (at the very least) LMA has to be thinking that his teammates and Pop handle these type situations very differently than his former teammates and coaches. Learning and adjusting his game against lesser competition is one thing; learning and adjusting against top-tier competition in a near-playoff-intense game is on a higher level.

You and I have discussed LMA before. I have some serious questions about his value, too. But unlike you, I am biding my time before I pass judgment. We all knew he would need to make a big adjustment. Well, he's in the process of making it. Come playoffs, we will be in a position to judge whether he has made the transition or he hasn't.

So I don't see David West having trouble with the adjustment.

The dude is a max player, it is already past midseason, he should know by now how to get the job done.

If he doesn't deliver this next 9 games, we can call him a bust.

Plenty of posters thought that West was also a bust for the first month or more of the season. Now, most of them have remarked that West has been coming on stronger and stronger - clearly an indication that he is still in the process of adjusting, although making good progress. To state the obvious, some players take longer than others. There is no question in my mind that West has a much higher BBIQ than LMA.

I didn't think that West was a high basketball IQ player, thought he was just average. Clearly the bar is pretty low for Aldridge.

It is f*cking disappointing honestly. It is like Aldridge is so one dimensional a player that barely know how to make an assist. He also looks so unathletic defensivelty with his hands just flailing all over the place.

To add insult to injury, the guy comes into Spurs practice overweight.

Never mind your utterly clueless takes about basketball. I would love to see either of you two nancy-boys stand in front of LaMarcus Aldridge and tell him that he doesn't have the balls to play in the NBA.

As for Aldridge "not getting it done"?

Parker Free Throw 2 of 2 Missed
00:10.9 Aldridge Rebound (Off:2 Def:6)
Thompson Foul: Personal Take (3 PF) (2 FTA) (R Garretson) 00:09.7
00:09.7 [SAS 98-93] Aldridge Free Throw 1 of 2 (5 PTS)
00:09.7 [SAS 99-93] Aldridge Free Throw 2 of 2 (6 PTS)

In January, he's stepped up to 18.2 points per game, and 10.2 rebounds, and he's 13-14 from the FT line. (Don't know if that includes last night.)

Oh, and he averages 17.5 PPG on the road vs. 15.5 at home. Seems to me he's played pretty good when the Spurs needed him the most. Some of you don't seem to understand that there are two teams on the floor, and some of them are also pretty good. Last night was one of those times, and the Spurs won as a team.

If he doesn't deliver this next 9 games, we can call him a bust.
