BREAKING NEWS

President Bush says he takes responsibility for the federal government's failures in responding to Hurricane Katrina. Details soon.

Marcus Bryant

The obvious course politically. Bush makes an apology to the nation. All but the 30% or so who patently hate him will forget about blaming him within 2 weeks.

Bush Takes Responsibility for Failures in Storm Response
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 12:05 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush said Tuesday that ''I take responsibility'' for failures in dealing with Hurricane Katrina and said the disaster raised broader questions about the government's ability to respond to natural disasters as well as terror attacks.

''Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government,'' Bush said at joint White House news conference with the president of Iraq.

''To the extent the federal government didn't fully do it's job right, I take responsibility,'' Bush said.

The president was asked whether people should be worried about the government's ability to handle another terrorist attack given failures in responding to Katrina.

No shit it's political. Anything he does/says is political. The point is that he's admiting there are issues that need to be resolved.

Now, do I have faith in our government to streamline a beaucracy into an effective responder? I'm not going to hold my breath on that one.

I don't think this was a Rove move at all. I think this was George Bush being himself. I don't agree with him on much at all, but he comes across as a man with whom a handshake means something.

It had to be done. PR-move or not, the country is angry and divided right now. We can have months of Republican-President-and-Supporters vs. Democratic-Governor-and-Supporters or each party can take responsibility for their failings and work to improve future disaster plans.

Nagin and Blanco have no room to talk, but yes they have done their share of bitching.

Now those two clowns need to admit their own failures in this debacle. I doubt that will ever happen though.

Nagin bugged out to Dallas lol..

Why didn't he setup shop in Baton Rouge?

Seems to me living in Dallas would not help getting N.O. back up to snuff...

EDIT: Yea Bush glad he stepped up ... I think his failure was appointing Brownie.... but he's on the game now.

And the sheepel will follow.

Only political novices would think that this wasn't a Karl Rove move. Have the President accept responsibility, but don't get into too many specifics, there's enough blame to go around. We've muddied the water enough through out media shills. Nevermind that the administration has been patting itself on the back for it's prompt hurricane reaction as recently as yesterday. (http://www.crooksandliars.com/2005/09/12.html#a4927)

President Bush was very happy with himself today as he told reporters that he had pre-signed emergency declarations in anticipation of the big storm coming.

Bush: "Which is by the way, extraordinary."

I don't think Bush supporters support him under the belief that he won't step up to the plate....

Oh, come on now. You know as well as I do that there are plenty of right-wingers who get their political info from Sean and Rush.

Hmm....this would require me to make the assumption that both parties are just different sides of the same coin, as they have been for much of American history...unfortunately you are wrong...at least when talking PCTs. The remaining left is basically devoid any moderate voice...it's definitely devoid of it at it's leadership positions...this is not true of the Right.

Since the Republicans are in charge of the country, it would seem that the moderates are generally right centered now, for capturing the moderate vote is the only way a political party may gain that control...and I think obviously...the moderates are the people with the highest political IQ, because they realize that neither party is rigth all of the time.

Be a man like Bush and admit it.

Someday the left will again be able to do more than draw lame moral equivalencies and try to make 2 wrongs equal a right...and on that day, I just might consider supporting that party again...however I see nothing to indicate that day is near...and everything to indicate that it is getting further and further away.

I've never absolved the federal government of blame in all this.

I do have a serious problem with the demorats, including Miss high and mighty gov. of La., trying to place all the blame on Bush and FEMA for not being able to bail them with a day's notice when they were too stupid to follow the letter of their own evacuation/disaster plans.

To the extent, because to anyone whose not such a bigot towards anything related to W. or the presidency it's obvious state and local people F'ed up too. That's his point... why the hell should he take responsibility for the state and local screw ups? Oh yeah... they're democrats, and democrats never screw up [/dumbass boutons]

... still sliming city/state, spreading the responsibility.

Again, unless you're either a bigot or an idiot (which you look as though you might be both), the state and local governments deserve some blame.

Riddle me this oh spiteful one... Why is it neither Mississippi or Alabama are having the problems NO had, despite having maybe 1/20th of the federal resources dedicated to them combined that NO had?

To save you the time, it's because both states followed their hurricane playbooks, while Blanco and Nagin improvised on the fly, then crapped themselves when the levee broke and expected the federal government to fix it all on the spot.
