View Full Version : The Atlantic: "The Freakishness of Christianity"
Blake

" Evangelical Christianity has long had a stranglehold on how Americans imagine public faith. Vague invocations of “religion”—whether it’s “religion vs. science” or “religious freedom”—usually really mean “conservative, Protestant, evangelical Christianity,” and this assumption inevitably frames debates about American belief. For the other three-quarters of the population—Catholics, Jews,*other Protestants,*Muslims, Hindus, secular Americans, Buddhists, Wiccans, etc.—this can be infuriating. For some evangelicals, it’s a sign of success, a linguistic triumph of the culture wars......"

The word Southern in Southern Baptist Convention stems from its having been founded and rooted in the Southern United States (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_United_States), following a split from northern Baptists (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Baptist_Churches_USA) over the issue of slavery (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_the_United_States); the specific issue was whether slave owners could serve as missionaries.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Baptist_Convention
The entire basis of these religions is to define a group and then exclude, denigrate, shame, condemn, agitate against all the people who don't belong.

Ridiculous. I donate to charity every once in a while. Clothes, old cars. It's absurd to think such things are reserved to religious persons, or even just Christians.

Get back to us when a mega-church grifter pastor, any grifter pastor, stands up against USA war mongering, drone killings, planet-wide murdering mafia.
Repug-voting Christians don't scream when Repugs cut the social welfare net, support of poor kids and women, homeless.
Self-congratulating, preening, holier-than-thou Christians don't have a monopoly on good works, good deeds. They probably give more to support their pastors' $M homes, jets, lifestyles than to charity.

I wonder what percentage of that is a result of bible belters tithing 10% of their income to their local church as God commands them to, in which case the vast majority of money is reinvested in the church and goes toward proselytizing. Wouldn't really consider that charity.

To be fair, Protestants are so heretical from the original church that they really aren’t even true Christians in my book. Baptists, non-denominational, Anglicans, etc it’s all the same crap.
If you want a fair picture look at the Catholics/Orthodox. If you really want a fair picture look at what the Orthodox church believes since Catholicism was really a heretical, political movement but most of their members don’t know that and they’re still fairly close to the original teaching. But I know you have an agenda to push so don’t let facts get in the way.

Authorship[edit (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gospel_of_John&action=edit§ion=2)]
Main article: Authorship of the Johannine works (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authorship_of_the_Johannine_works)
The Gospel of John was written in Greek by an anonymous author.[7] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-sanders-7)[8] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-ehrman-8)[9] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-lost-9)[10] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-10)[11] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-11)[12] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-12)[13] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-13)[14] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-14)[15] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-15) According to Paul N. Anderson, the gospel "contains more direct claims to eyewitness origins than any of the other Gospel traditions".[16] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-16) F. F. Bruce (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F._F._Bruce) argues that 19:35 contains an "emphatic and explicit claim to eyewitness authority".[17] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-17) Bart D. Ehrman (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bart_D._Ehrman), however, does not think the gospel claims to have been written by direct witnesses to the reported events.[9] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-lost-9)[18] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-18)[19] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-iuda-19)
\
The gospel identifies its author as "the disciple whom Jesus loved (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disciple_whom_Jesus_loved)." Although the text does not name this disciple, by the beginning of the 2nd century, a tradition had begun to form which identified him with John the Apostle (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_the_Apostle), one of the Twelve (Jesus' innermost circle).
Although some notable New Testament scholars affirm traditional Johannine scholarship,[20] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-20)[21] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-21) the majority do not believe that John (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_the_Evangelist) or one of the Apostles wrote it,[22] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-22)[23] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-23)[24] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-24)[25] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-25)[26] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-26)[27] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_John#cite_note-27) and trace it instead to a "Johannine community" which traced its traditions to John; the gospel itself shows signs of having been composed in three "layers", reaching its final form about 90–100 AD.

The United Way is currently not affiliated with any religion. But keep pretending the Christians are the good guys in the USofMerica

Either a pastor fucked his wife or he was molested by one growing up. If you count the hours spent on arguing meaningless shit on a fucking messageboard OP is probably a miserable piece of shit, tbh..
You sound like a really happy guy.
And the "you spend more time on this site than me" put down is always a winner.

Never been cucked so I am very happy about that, tbh..

The fact that you had to address that part specifically tells me all I need to know. That shit rang a bell. If you spent half the time you do bashing Christianity on actually doing something productive you'd actually be a decent guy. You come off as a miserable piece of shit. Watch how you're going to reply to this.
Anyway all I do is win, Jason Witten no helmet, #Dezcaughttheball etc

I had some nukes dropped on me this past week regarding the wife, which after looking back the past 1-2 years I should have seen it and I realize I am a fucking idiot.

No, that if the woman who cheated on you was Christian, it would help explain your hatred of Christianity.

Mary turned Joseph into a cuck and blamed it on the invisible sky man, tbh, so your situation fits perfectly with Christianity.

I can and do say whatever I want. There's no goalposts, there's not even a game. Christ, His miracles, the cross (more likely must tree pole), and Christianity are very probably a fabricated out of nothing. He was not even claimed to be God until decades after His death.
Are you also willing to say the same about the other major Abrahamic religion, or you are a hypocrite that only dares to criticize Christianity?

I'm not Christian. Both books are full of shit. Can you admit it or you are afraid to offend minorities?

I wouldn't call it shit, but from my research, the Bible is mostly fairy tails, myths, with almost no historical evidence. The Bible certainly useless as literal history, science, cosmology.
