View Full Version : An Open Rant at Those Who Would Repeal the Second Amendment

Sounds lie the voters are voting.
And Obama believes that it's shootings that make people go out and buy guns/gun stocks instead of him. Every time he opens his mouth about more gun control, my husband buys more guns or ammo.

Open Carry Texans with legal guns now have to prove they have legal guns in ironic twist of fate (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2016/1/6/1466676/-Open-Carry-Texans-with-legal-guns-now-have-to-prove-they-have-legal-guns-in-ironic-twist-of-fate)
To comply with state liquor rules, the world’s biggest retailer sent a written notice last month to stores that sell alcohol, telling managers to ensure that customers who openly carry firearms under a new law have licenses.
Cashiers or door greeters who see someone with a gun are to alert the highest-ranking employee, who is to approach the customer and ask to see the paperwork.
Wal-Mart and other retailers that sell beer, wine and spirits fall under the authority of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, which prohibits unlicensed handguns in establishments that offer such products for off-premises consumption.
An establishment can lose its liquor license if it “knowingly allows” a person to bring an illegal firearm on the premises, said Chris Porter, spokesman for the agency.
“I find it offensive,” said C.J. Grisham, president of gun-rights group Open Carry Texas, who has heard from members who shop at Wal-Mart that they have been asked for permits. “I don’t want to be treated suspect by a place that I’m shopping at.” :lol
25-year-old Ashley Bravo de Rueda told Bloomberg that when she went to Walmart to buy some pacifiers and dog food she was carrying a “Bersa Thunder .380 pistol”. You know, as you do—fucking pacifier aisle can be a shitshow, y’all; and don’t get me started on the dog food aisle. Some Nazi walked up to her and asked for her papers!
“She said, ‘Ma’am, you are more than welcome to carry a gun like that, but I’m going to need to see your license,’" Bravo de Rueda recalled.
[...]
“The whole time I felt like I was looking over my shoulder,” she said. :lol
“To me, I’m lawfully carrying. I should not be stopped for something that I am not doing wrong.” :lol

Texas Finally Addresses Severe Lack Of Access To Guns For Mentally Ill
You know what Texas needs more of? No, not stupid Republican governors; it’s already had a lifetime supply of those. More guns is what Texas needs. More guns in all the places you can think of, and some other places you can’t and don’t want to. Like the state’s 10 psychiatric hospitals, for example, where they put the people who even gun-diddlers supposedly think shouldn’t have access to guns. YEE HAW! (http://www.statesman.com/news/news/guns-now-allowed-in-texas-state-run-psychiatric-ho/npztT/)
Before the state’s new open carry law went into effect (http://www.mystatesman.com/news/news/crime-law/central-texas-braces-for-challenges-of-new-gun-ope/nptd7/), guns were banned at those state facilities. No one — visitors, deliverymen and the like — could bring firearms anywhere on campus. Even local law enforcement officers, who were already allowed to bring their weapons into the facilities, regularly lock up their guns before entering Austin State Hospital out of an abundance of caution. Now visitors can bring guns into the buildings where patients live. Employees are still prohibited from bringing them on campus.
These seems like a potentially fatal flaw, because what if a bad visitor with a gun comes to one of the psych hospitals, and no good employee with a gun is able to stop him? What kind of tyrannical restriction is that?
Oh there is also the matter of suicidal residents having absurdly easy access to a gun — thanks for stopping by with the cookies and the Glock, neighbor! — and blowing their brains out, for freedom. But that hardly seems like a legitimate concern, since Texas has repeatedly (http://wonkette.com/576181/rick-perry-poor-texans-love-not-having-health-insurance-it-is-their-hobby) demonstrated just how many fucks (http://wonkette.com/597341/to-save-babies-texas-murders-hiv-funding-at-planned-parenthood) it doesn’t give about the health (http://wonkette.com/589252/texas-doesnt-care-if-you-have-cancer-in-your-ladyparts) of its citizens.
Besides, ensuring those instruments of freedom don’t end up in the wrong hands is the job (http://www.statesman.com/news/news/guns-now-allowed-in-texas-state-run-psychiatric-ho/npztT/) of the unarmed, defenseless people who work there:
Rep. Matt Rinaldi, R-Irving, who supports the new law, said he doesn’t have a problem with legally obtained and licensed guns in the hospitals.
“Its the responsibility of the operators of the facilities to ensure that the patients are not around dangerous weapons,” he said.
So thanks to the brand spankin’ new More Guns In All The Places open carry law, visitors to psych wards have the NRA-given right to carry their guns into psych wards, but somehow — who knows how? guess we’ll find out soon enough! — patients are supposed to be kept away from those “dangerous weapons,” because come on, those things are dangerous and those people in the psychiatric hospitals really shouldn’t be around ’em!
This seems like a terrific plan in which absolutely nothing could go wrong, until something inevitably does. But oh well. At least the right to carry guns IN ALL THE PLACES will be safe, even if Texas’s mentally ill patients won’t be. And isn’t that what matters most?

New NRA Lie: We Were Responsible For Creating The National Instant Criminal Background Check System
A video from National Rifle Association executive vice president Wayne LaPierre offered a false history of the passage of the 1993 Brady background check bill in order to attack President Obama's recently released executive actions on gun violence.
In the video, the NRA attempts to position itself as the heroic creator of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), when in reality the gun group fiercely fought the passage of the Brady bill and then later attempted to have the Supreme Court invalidate the entire law.
In a January 6 response video (https://www.nranews.com/series/wayne-lapierre/video/wayne-lapierre-the-truth-about-background-checks/episode/wayne-lapierre-season-1-episode-5-the-truth-about-background-checks), the NRA attempted to cast itself as the actual authority on background checks. In purporting to tell a history of the Brady bill, the legislation that was responsible for the creation of the national background check system (http://mediamatters.org/blog/2014/02/28/20-years-after-brady-bill-enacted-conservative/198265) for gun purchases, LaPierre falsely claimed, "The best-kept secret is that the National Instant Check System wouldn't exist at all if it weren't for the NRA":
LAPIERRE: The best-kept secret is that the National Instant Check System wouldn't exist at all if it weren't for the NRA. It's true. Back in the '90s, President Clinton forced passage of a mandatory waiting period on every handgun purchase in America. Not a background check. A wait.
But NRA said as soon as the technology was available, their wait had to be replaced by an instant background check, done by the dealer, at the point of sale. NRA supported it, NRA got the votes and NRA got it passed.
The NRA's claim is false for several reasons, many of which can be found in a legislative history of the bill's passage in UCLA law professor Adam Winkler's 2013 book (http://www.amazon.com/Gunfight-Battle-Over-Right-America/dp/0393345831) Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms In America.
The NRA only proposed what became NICS in an attempt to derail the Brady bill by including provisions that were not technologically feasible. To their chagrin, a compromise was introduced that gave the federal government five years to develop the technology before it became mandatory. Winkler writes (https://books.google.com/books?id=oq39ykAGVYQC&pg=PT77&lpg=PT77&dq=nra+the+whole+statute+must+be+voided&source=bl&ots=469buxBPBb&sig=2jEf1_7_KHB4LNTe-cBGl-sRL7Q&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiZ7rLUu5rKAhVGVT4KHSIGAU4Q6AEIKDAC#v=on epage&q=nra%20the%20whole%20statute%20must%20be%20voided&f=false), "Sarah Brady was an incredibly sympathetic character, and LaPierre knew that tackling her head-on was a recipe for a public relations disaster. So he pushed the NRA's allies in Congress to add to the Brady bill a provision that critics said would render the law ineffective. LaPierre's amendment would mandate instantaneous computerized background checks and a waiting period no longer than twenty-four hours. According to critics, this reasonable sounding proposal had one major flaw: it was not yet technologically feasible."
The final version of the Brady bill included the creation of NICS, which was to go into effect in 1998. The NRA was furious. According to Winkler (https://books.google.com/books?id=oq39ykAGVYQC&pg=PT77&lpg=PT77&dq=nra+the+whole+statute+must+be+voided&source=bl&ots=469buxBPBb&sig=2jEf1_7_KHB4LNTe-cBGl-sRL7Q&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiZ7rLUu5rKAhVGVT4KHSIGAU4Q6AEIKDAC#v=on epage&q=nra%20the%20whole%20statute%20must%20be%20voided&f=false), an NRA publication claimed, "When Bill Clinton signed the Brady Bill into law on November 30, a drop of blood dripped from the finger of the sovereign American citizen."
The NRA challenged the constitutionality of the Brady law in a case that made it to the Supreme Court in 1997. The NRA's primary argument was that the law was unconstitutional because it "commandeered (http://www.jstor.org/stable/1049062?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents)" state governments by forcing them to carry out functions that the federal government cannot force them to do under the 10th Amendment. The NRA could have limited its argument to say that state authorities did not have to perform Brady background checks, essentially pausing the national background check system until 1998 when NICS would come online (states would still be free to run background checks under the Brady bill, but the federal government couldn't force them to do so). Instead, the NRA argued (https://books.google.com/books?id=oq39ykAGVYQC&pg=PT77&lpg=PT77&dq=nra+the+whole+statute+must+be+voided&source=bl&ots=469buxBPBb&sig=2jEf1_7_KHB4LNTe-cBGl-sRL7Q&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiZ7rLUu5rKAhVGVT4KHSIGAU4Q6AEIKDAC#v=on epage&q=nra%20the%20whole%20statute%20must%20be%20voided&f=false), "the whole Statute must be voided." If this argument would have been successful, NICS would have never been implemented.
Claims that the NRA wanted comprehensive background checks during the legislative fight over the Brady bill should be treated with extreme skepticism, as the gun group repeatedly fought to weaken the bill. One example is the Gekas amendment (http://www.thetrace.org/2015/07/brady-bill-amendment-default-proceed-loophole-amendment-nra/) to the Brady bill, where the NRA urged its allies in Congress to introduce a provision allowing a gun dealer to go forward with a sale after three business days, even if the background check had not been completed. The amendment received widespread attention following the June 2015 mass shooting at a church in Charleston, South Carolina. The gunman in that shooting should have failed the background check (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/11/us/background-check-flaw-let-dylann-roof-buy-gun-fbi-says.html?_r=0) he underwent while purchasing the gun he used in his attack, but instead the sale proceeded after three days because NICS had not yet been able to locate his prohibiting record.

Ryan and his lies
Paul Ryan says “the president has never respected the right to safe and legal gun ownership,” it’s not because his listening and reading comprehension are so poor that he took the following words from Obama’s speech to mean their diametric opposite
Now, I want to be absolutely clear at the start—and I’ve said this over and over again, this also becomes routine, there is a ritual about this whole thing that I have to do—I believe in the Second Amendment. It’s there written on the paper. It guarantees a right to bear arms. No matter how many times people try to twist my words around—I taught constitutional law, I know a little about this—I get it. But I also believe that we can find ways to reduce gun violence consistent with the Second Amendment.

Anti-Obama March Organizer Fatally Shoots Right-Wing Militant Buddy in Drunken Dispute Over Gun
Social media posts identified the victim and shooter as the organizers of the Paul Revere 2016 Final March To Restore America.
Planning for a cross-country march to “restore America” — which is related to the Oregon nature preserve standoff — appears to have hit a snag when one of its organizers shot the other co-founder Monday afternoon during a drunken argument over a gun.
Sheriff’s deputies in Grayson County, Texas, have not released details about the fatal shooting (http://www.kten.com/story/30940853/one-person-dead-after-shooting-in-grayson-county), but social media posts by right-wing “patriots” associated with militants occupying an Oregon nature preserve identified the victim and shooter as the organizers of the Paul Revere 2016 Final March To Restore America (https://www.facebook.com/Paulrevere2016/).
“Dear friends it’s my dearest regrets to have to share this heart breaking new (sic) with you tonight. That OUR fellow patriot and brother Charles Carter is no longer with us. Who was suppose (sic) to be his brother in arms and friend,”posted online radio host Keith Williams (https://www.facebook.com/keith.d.williams.5/posts/1220392504643914?pnref=story), who described himself as the victim’s next of kin.

Cruz, NRA take a keen interest in Australian gun control
At an event in October, Hillary Clinton talked a bit about preventing gun violence, and referenced a notable international example.
“The Australian government, as part of trying to clamp down on the availability of automatic weapons, offered a good price for buying hundreds of thousands of guns, and then they basically clamped down going forward in terms of having, you know, more of a background-check approach, more of a permitting approach,” Clinton said at the time.
It’s led some on the right to make Australia the basis for a new pitch to conservative voters. The Hillreported (http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/266454-nra-obama-clinton-want-australian-style-gun-confiscation) last week:
The National Rifle Association is tying President Obama and Hillary Clinton to Australia’s gun buy-back program, arguing the two Democrats want to confiscate American guns.
The video, released by the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action, includes clips of Obama and Clinton, the Democratic presidential front-runner, offering positive comments about the Australian gun “confiscation” program.
As part of the launch of the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHGit3zF808), the far-right group warned the public, “Don’t let what happened in Australia happen here.”
What the p.r. offensive fails to explain, however, is what exactly “happened in Australia” that Americans should be so eager to avoid.
Around the same time as the push from the NRA’s lobbying arm, Ted Cruz talked with conservative host Hugh Hewitt, who asked the Republican White House hopeful about President Obama referencing Australia during a recent town-hall forum.
“Listen, it’s not complicated why he brings up Australia all the time, because the President believes in confiscation…. The president wants to confiscate handguns,” Cruz argued (http://www.hughhewitt.com/senator-ted-cruz-eligibility-triad-boxing-analogies/), adding, “
And as you know, Hugh, after Australia did that, the rate of sexual assaults, the rate of rapes, went up significantly, because women were unable to defend themselves.”
Is that true? Did the number of sexual assaults in Australia increase “significantly” while gun violence decreased?
Actually, no. The Washington Post did some fact-checking (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2016/01/25/ted-cruzs-claim-that-sexual-assaults-rate-went-up-significantly-after-australian-gun-control-laws/) yesterday.
The rate of sexual assaults in Australia has increased slightly between 1996 and 2014, but there was no significant spike or drop after the 1996 legislative changes or buyback program. The increase likely is affected by the increase in reporting, and there wasn’t prevalent use of handguns for self-defense before 1996, as Cruz suggests. There was no blanket exemption allowing people to use handguns for self-defense prior to 1996, though the explicit prohibition came through the 1996 changes. […]
Despite the litany of caveats, there was a gradual increase in sexual assault rates over a decade after the 1996 changes – which places his claim in the range of Three Pinocchios. But the rates didn’t go up “significantly” after the buyback, and there’s no evidence that changes to gun laws in Australia affected sexual assault rates or jeopardized the ability of women to protect themselves.
I’ll gladly concede that analysis of Australia’s gun policies is complicated, and making an apples-to-apples comparison to the United States is difficult. But even putting all of that aside, Cruz’s claims just aren’t supported by the evidence.
And I’m still unclear why the right believes we can’t “let what happened in Australia happen here.”

This Bill Would Strip Legal Immunity From the Gun Industry
Gun makers and sellers enjoy legal protections unlike any other American industry.
Wednesday, several Democratic members of Congress introduced legislation to repeal the immunity provisions in PLCAA, along with a separate law that bans plaintiffs in civil cases from introducing gun trace data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. (That trace data is an easy way to track guns and prove straw-purchase activity by a gun dealer).
The argument against gunmaker immunity isn’t just about allowing victims of gun violence to seek compensation after the fact—many gun-policy experts believe the unusual immunity enjoyed by the gun industry removes any incentive for manufacturers or retailers to adopt additional safety measures, like stronger oversight of potential straw purchases or the addition of safety locks to guns.
“In granting immunity to the worst actors in the gun industry, Congress did tremendous harm to the goal that we all want to see, which is fewer families torn apart by guns,” said Representative Adam Schiff at a news conference in the US Capitol, where he was joined by the bill’s original co-sponsors: Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal and Representative Chris Van Hollen.

Ryan asshole is OWNED by gun money
This Week in God, 2.6.16
First up from the God Machine this week is a reaction from a leading Republican lawmaker to the “thoughts and prayers are not enough” argument in response to mass shootings.
President Obama has been a leading proponent of the idea that well wishes in the response to gun violence are welcome, but are ultimately inadequate. After one mass shooting last fall, the presidentargued (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/angry-president-argues-thoughts-and-prayers-are-not-enough), “[T]houghts and prayers are not enough…. It does not capture the heartache and grief and anger that we should feel. And it does nothing to prevent this carnage from being inflicted someplace else in America, next week or a couple of months from now.”
Two months later, after even deadlier mass shooting, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) took the sentiment a little further. “Your ‘thoughts’ should be about steps to take to stop this carnage,” the senator said (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/prayers-are-not-enough). “Your ‘prayers’ should be for forgiveness if you do nothing – again.”
This week, Congress’ leading Republican offered his response to the argument. The New York Daily News reported (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/ryan-defends-prayer-adequate-response-gun-violence-article-1.2520577):
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Thursday blasted critics who say prayer isn’t an adequate response to mass shootings and defended his rifle-loving party’s do-nothing approach to gun violence.
“The attitude in some quarters these days is, ‘Don’t just pray; do something about it,”’ Ryan said at the annual National Prayer Breakfast. “The thing is, when you are praying, you are doing something about it. You are revealing the presence of God.”
:lol Holy shit
As part of the same set of remarks, but outside of the context of gun violence, the Wisconsin congressman added, “It says a lot about our country that people of both parties – and all faiths – will drop everything and pray for their fellow Americans. What it says is, we believe in the dignity of the individual. And that is why prayer should always come first.”
:lol actual DOING something, never. :lol Maintain the status quo, at best regress, never progress.
As for mass shootings, the GOP leader did not elaborate on what should always come second.
President Obama, as he does every year, delivered his own remarks at the event, including an interesting and compelling exploration of “fear” on a theological level.
“For me, and I know for so many of you, faith is the great cure for fear,” he said (https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2016/02/04/remarks-president-national-prayer-breakfast-0). “Jesus is a good cure for fear. God gives believers the power, the love, the sound mind required to conquer any fear. And what more important moment for that faith than right now? What better time than these changing, tumultuous times to have Jesus standing beside us, steadying our minds, cleansing our hearts, pointing us towards what matters…. And so like every President, like every leader, like every person, I’ve known fear. But my faith tells me that I need not fear death; that the acceptance of Christ promises everlasting life and the washing away of sins.”

The New Orleans Gun Pipeline: Stolen weapons fuel street violence
"Some high school students have told me it's easier for them to get a gun in their neighborhood than it is for them to find a text book," Cannizzaro said. "That's a very sad state of affairs."
In New Orleans and unincorporated Jefferson (http://topics.nola.com/tag/jefferson/) Parish combined, three guns were reported stolen, on average, every day of 2015, according to a review of law enforcement data by NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune. The guns are taken in home burglaries, car break-ins, armed robberies and thefts – some swiped by strangers, some by friends or relatives of their legal owners.
In New Orleans alone, more than 2,100 guns were reported stolen between 2012 and 2015, NOPD data show. Over the past two years, more than 1,300 guns were stolen in unincorporated Jefferson Parish and Kenner (http://topics.nola.com/tag/kenner/); St. Tammany Parish reported 374 stolen firearms during that same stretch.
The numbers, obtained through a series of public records requests, do not account for the undetermined and potentially significant number of stolen weapons that were not reported to authorities.
Nationally, the total number of lost or stolen firearms is close to 500,000 per year, according to Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives estimates.
The agency lists 190,342 reported gun thefts in 2012 (https://www.atf.gov/resource-center/docs/2012-firearms-reported-lost-and-stolenpdf-1/download), suggesting that more than 60 percent of stolen guns that year went unreported.
Using that math, the number of pilfered firearms in metro New Orleans is more than double what has been reported. But even if people do report their stolen guns, the chances of them being found by police are slim.
A 2012 Justice Department study (http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/press/fshbopc0510pr.cfm)found that from 2005 to 2010, home burglaries and property crimes across the country accounted for roughly 1.4 million stolen firearms. Of those stolen weapons, approximately 80 percent had not been recovered six months later.

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms."
- Thomas Jefferson, Virginia Constitution, Draft 1, 1776
"I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery."
- Thomas Jefferson, letter to James Madison, January 30, 1787
"What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms."
- Thomas Jefferson, letter to James Madison, December 20, 1787
"The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed."
- Thomas Jefferson, letter to to John Cartwright, 5 June 1824
"Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed, as they are in almost every country in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops."
- Noah Webster, An Examination of the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution, October 10, 1787
"Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments, to which the people are attached, and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government of any form can admit of."
- James Madison, Federalist No. 46, January 29, 1788
"Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined.... The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able might have a gun."
- Patrick Henry, Speech to the Virginia Ratifying Convention, June 5, 1778
"The Constitution shall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms."
- Samuel Adams, Massachusetts Ratifying Convention, 1788
"The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them."
- Joseph Story, Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States, 1833
"If the representatives of the people betray their constituents, there is then no resource left but in the exertion of that original right of self-defense which is paramount to all positive forms of government, and which against the usurpations of the national rulers, may be exerted with infinitely better prospect of success than against those of the rulers of an individual state. In a single state, if the persons intrusted with supreme power become usurpers, the different parcels, subdivisions, or districts of which it consists, having no distinct government in each, can take no regular measures for defense. The citizens must rush tumultuously to arms, without concert, without system, without resource; except in their courage and despair."
- Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 28
"f circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people while there is a large body of citizens, little, if at all, inferior to them in discipline and the use of arms, who stand ready to defend their own rights and those of their fellow-citizens. This appears to me the only substitute that can be devised for a standing army, and the best possible security against it, if it should exist."
- Alexander Hamilton, [I]Federalist No. 28, January 10, 1788
"As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms."
- Tench Coxe, Philadelphia Federal Gazette, June 18, 1789

Bingo. Useless when I did it, and useless when you did it.
Safe to say:
The world and technology has changed a lot in the last 200+ years.
I am not totally unopposed to another constitutional convention from an idea standpoint, but sheesh it would lead to a catfight of catastrophic proportions.

In terms of the 2nd amendment....why would you want another constitutional convention? Your side has had no problem trampling the 2nd as originally written without amending anything.

I’ve never understood this, if conservatives are such ORIGINALISTS!!!, wouldn’t the originalist interpretation of tbe 2nd amendment only apply to what firearms were when the 2nd amendment was written? Using originalist principles, the 2nd amendment only applies to muskets with those little ball bullets where you need to reload each time :lol
Seems like another case of conservatives wanting to pick and choose the parts of the constitution that evolve vs. which parts need to be construed in a narrow, originalist fashion.

https://thepostmillennial.com/armed-customer-shoots-kills-robber-texas-churchs-chicken
Despite being hit by gunfire, the pair of thieves fled on foot, but they didn't make it very far. They were both found by police and taken to hospital, where one of them died later of his wounds.
the armed citizen was then questioned by police regarding the incident, and then duly released

"We estimate 430 unintentional firearm fatalities in the United States per year.
The rate is highest for older children to young adults, ages 10 to 29, and the vast majority of the victims are male.
Common circumstances include
playing with the gun (28.3% of incidents),
thinking the gun was unloaded (17.2%), and
hunting (13.8%).
The victim is suspected to have consumed alcohol in nearly a quarter of the deaths and in 46.8% of deaths among those aged 20–29."
compared with the number of "Bad Guys stopped by Good Guys with a gun" ?
