Well, one thing to keep an eye on is TP has not had one legit drive. Have to hope his ability to drive and get past defenders is not completely diminished.

Starting unit of Tim, LA, Tony, Danny, & Kawhi looked solid together. Good ball movement and nice PnR action. LMA looked like he shook off some of that rust.

That' Tim's defense - it's an issue. Tim can still be a great help defender and post defender but it's gotten ugly on the permiter. If he decides to close out, he can't stop or move his feet fast enough. It was a big issue last year.

One thing you saw the previous defensive possession was how effective and long double teams will be - either with Tim or LMA. Having so many good rebounders on the floor along with length and smart defensive players means doubles should be very effective IMO.

I am willing to bet you see the Spurs have a lot of success with double teams this year both in terms of creating tough shots and then getting the rebound.

Kyle has made 2 or 3 heads-up plays on defense with his length this first half (almost Kawhi like). It looks consistent and he is a little faster on lateral movement. So there is at least one bright spot.

People can say LMA~Splitter defensively as much as they want, but LMA at is best is just good Splitter. Normal Aldridge is no where near average Splitter, and when Tiago would go into Golden God mode, he was by far the best defender on the team.

The bigs are all really slow, and Aldridge looks slower than he was in Portland IMO..hopefully it's just preseason basketball shape for Aldridge, but can't do much about the ages of Duncan/West/Diaw..

Not necessarily a fatal flaw, though, I've never heard of bench defense being a significant factor in the make or break for the title..

LMA not as bad as I thought on D.

Boban can be a defensive plus.

It's going to be a struggle for Pop to implement "Spurs D' with so many combos. But the potential is there.

I'm less worried about D than I was an hour ago.

Yeah, me too. I was really sad when he opted out last season. Would have wanted him badly this year, even with the blood clots. He learned how to be an effective center (especially defensively), but he would have benefited from playing with Tim even more than Aldridge has.

Yeah, plus the miscues were on both ends, tbh... at this time of the season though, I don't expect lock down D, tbh... if anything it will have to come from the KA, Simms, Butler, Jimmer, etc that are trying to make the team

The issue is that Manu just can't get it done consistently on D anymore. Pop is GOING to close with him over Green, and Parker/Manu/Leonard/LMA/Duncan has the potential to be a bad defensive unit unless Aldridge is 100-percent engaged.

Manu didn't close against the Clippers last playoffs (at least on Game 7), so I'm not sure that's a given, tbh... plus I thought Gino's defense has been above average, tbh... at least much better than Tony... probably the 3rd best perimeter defender we had last season...

Boban is a tough crafty Euro vet. He might wreak havoc on those with big bodies and weak minds like DJ and Griff.

I guess I'm watching a different game from those here saying the bigs are all slow? LMA doesn't look slow. He looked the same the last 2 seasons in Portland, except he's not taking possessions off like he used to there. And he is moving his feet methodically, so that he stays in a good position.

And Boban while slow was more mobile than expected. And Tony has played decent defense. It was West getting burned in the first half.

I'm ok with TP. The mindset seems good, he "looks" healthy (not explosive, but healthy and fluid) and is pushing the ball. He definitely hasn't been great or anything, but he's keeping things moving and pushing when he can. Hopefully his jumper is on this year and hopefully he can still break defenses down off the dribble when needed.

You can really start to see the potential of the Spurs here. Starters are stacked with tons of options, and pop is going to be able to get them tons of rest when they get the score up and the bench comes in the string the game along. The score gets close again and pop can start to shuffle certain starters in with the bench.

Loving the rotations now, boban and KA coming in for LMA and Leonard. This team is so diverse.

If you remember that practice where Pop was speaking to them about everyone needing to be ready to handle the ball and be aggressive; that is the position Kawhi will find himself in. Out of a lot of the sets, Kawhi will be the guy catching a lot of swing passes. He should be in a really good spot to take advantage and I think he will destroy a lot of teams.

2015 is a different era, though..if you're going to put a legit big man on the floor, he better be able to punish the small defenders..I'll give Boban the benefit of time, but not sure if he's coordinated enough to handle the pace and athleticism from an offensive standpoint..
