yeah, rasho sucks. thats whats wrong with him. in the last 18 games of the playoffs, he played exactly 59 minutes. i dropped a deuce today that took longer than that. he's awful. he is getting paid $45 million to sit on the bench, look like an idiot, and get laughed at during championship parades.

Yeah, he's rich idiot, idiot.

I watch some older games of Rasho, before he came to SA and he was playing really good, last season at Minnesota was really cool but i dont know how he cant attack the rim anymore and be agressive like in old times, i dont see the reason for that and that is the big?????????????????????

Some names that come to my mind right now:

Nikola Vujcic - Center (Croatia/ Maccabi Tel-Aviv)
Antoine Rigaudeau - Guard (France/ Pamesa Valencia) -yes, he was a flop in Dallas-
Mickael Gelabale - Forward (France/ Real Madrid)
Gianmarco Pozzecco - Guard (Italy/ BC Khimky Moscow)
Massimo Bulleri - Guard (Italy/ Armani Jeans Milano)
Gianluca Basile - Guard (Italy/ Barcelona)
Matteo Soragna - Guard (Italy/ Benetton Treviso)
Giacomo Galanda - F/C (Italy/ Armani Jeans Milano)
Denis Marconato - C (Italy/ Barcelona)
Robertas Javtokas - C (Lithuania/ Lietuvos rytas Vilnius)
Igor Rakocevic - G (Serbia & Montenegro/ Real Madrid)
Dejan Tomasevic - C (Serbia & Montenegro/ Panathinaikos Athens)
Jose Manuel Calderon - G (Spain/ Tau Ceramica Vitoria)
Rudy Fernandez G - (Spain/ DKV Joventut Badalona)
Jorge Garbajosa - C/F (Spain/ Unicaja Malaga)
Juan Carlos Navarro G - (Spain/ Barcelona)
Felipe Reyes F/C - (Spain/ Real Madrid)
Sergi Vidal - F/G (Spain/ Tau Ceramica Vitoria)
Antonis Fotsis - F (Greece/ Dynamo St.Petersburg)

Two things to consider: I posted more Spanish and Italian players because I can't get many info. on other leagues (specially Eastern Europe) because of language barriers.

Second, this is just a list of players I like, or consider good for one reason or another.

He is the kind of player that can go hot and make 8 three pointers in one game, but then go cold and shoot 0-8. Very streaky, but overall, the days he is shooting well are more than those when he is cold.

France sucks, they only put 14 points in the first half (20 min).

Javtokas make a quite good game 8 pt with a 4/6 anf 4 rbd.
The stats are not great but he makes a very good job on Okur on Defense (only 7 points). This guy will likely join the Spurs next offseason.

But I have BIG problems with names you DID post...

Bulleri, Soragna, Galebale, Vidale, are all odd names. Pick better. Even some israeli players are better than this. It just isn't sound.

As I said, I get more information on Spanish and Italian teams than the rest, if I could find some sites in english/spanish/portuguese/italian with information on Eastern European leagues and players I could have another perspective. Yes, Bodiroga is out, but I was posting only those who play in Eurobasket 2005. Some Israeli players are good, but Maccabbi's best players (which is the only good team in the Israeli league) are foreigners. The Italians are there because they are doing a good job with their national team. Just like some Argentinian players that aren't outstanding in their clubs, but they play a perfect role in the National Team (Wolkowisky, Sanchez, Montecchia, Sconochini).

Eight things to watch at the European Championships

Sep. 16, 2005
By Tony Mejia
CBS SportsLine.com Staff Writer

The European Championships get under way this weekend in Serbia-Montenegro, and there are many themes worth watching that affect not only the NBA, but the global game as well.

Dirk Nowitzki must deal with constant pressure from the opposition. (Getty Images)
The host Serbs are ranked second in the world behind the United States by FIBA, the world's governing body for basketball. Winning this event won't push them past the U.S., but considering they've won the past two world championships, it will further close the gap given American struggles in recent international events. Indeed, the 2006 World Championships in Japan will be telling, and the overriding goal for the European teams is to claim one of the six automatic berths up for grabs. The tournament runs through Sept. 25 and will have all first-round action completed by Monday.

Here are eight trends to watch, and we'll follow up next week:

1. The favorites: Sacramento's Peja Stojakovic opted not to play, but Serbia-Montenegero remains the team to beat, particularly as the host country. Suiting up New Jersey's Nenad Krstic, Seattle's Vladimir Radmanovic and Minnesota's Marko Jaric as its stars alongside European-based standouts Dejan Bodiroga and Igor Rakocevic, the team is loaded. Jaric and Krstic will have more visible roles with their NBA teams next season, so it will be interesting to see how they take to large roles on their national side. Jaric, who becomes Kevin Garnett's primary feeder this fall, could break out in this tournament and really establish some positive momentum entering camp. Krstic, who's clearly going to be a good one based on his strong rookie season, will get further acclimated to the role of primary post player. He's expected to play ahead of everyone's favorite backup ...

2. Darko Milicic: For his sake, we hope he sees more time than Larry Brown ever gave him; his game has clearly eroded while sitting the bench the past two seasons. He has looked indecisive and lost the few times he has seen action, and the rustiness carried over to this year's summer session. A strong run through this event might be just what's needed to re-establish his confidence entering a season in which he'll certainly have to play in order to avoid becoming Euro-speak for Kwame Brown.

3. Spanish influence: Memphis' Pau Gasol is indeed overseas, but instead of playing, he'll be providing commentary for the team's television broadcasts. It's good news for the Grizzlies that he opted to rest this summer given his history of injury, but he still expects his countrymen to deliver a ticket to next year's Worlds. Orlando Magic lottery pick Fran Vazquez, staying in Europe this season, will help anchor the team alongside Toronto point guard prospect Jose Manuel Calderon. Rudy Fernandez, who flirted with the draft this year but saw his stock slip to the point where it was wiser for him to back out, will also look to impress, as will 18-year-old Sergio Rodriguez, a playmaker who has pro scouts excited and who Jose Manuel Fernandez of Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo told me would be the country's next great export. They should be able to hold off Israel and Latvia in Group D, particularly since the Latvians are without the services of Golden State's Andris Biedrins and former UNLV standout Kaspars Kambala.

4. Don't strain yourself, Dirk: Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki is the only player who was an All-Star last season to be competing in the event, and he'll have to do some heavy lifting to carry Germany into the top six. Fellow frontcourt standout Ademola Okulaja, who played at North Carolina, will be absent with an injury. Patrick Femerling, who played at Washington, is expected to be Nowitzki's primary partner in the post. It won't be easy to get past Italy, and it will be nearly impossible to overcome Russia and win Group A.

5. Russian rise: Andrei Kirilenko will captain the Russian side, which also features Portland wings Viktor Khryapa and Sergei Monya in prominent roles. All three are long, fluid and versatile, which means that national side may be the most fun to watch in the entire event. Kirilenko should face off against Nowitzki when their teams meet, providing the premier matchup of the tournament. Russia feels it has a team capable of winning a medal, possibly gold, but needed a point guard to fully capitalize ...

6. What's J.R. translate to in Russian? American J.R. Holden, who played at Bucknell through 1998, has developed into one of the top guards in Europe, leading CSKA Moscow to great heights. As a result, according to the Moscow Times, the general manager for CSKA made the case to the Russian Federation that he be accepted as a naturalized citizen due to "special merit," which would supersede the standard criteria of speaking the language and living there for a minimum of five years. His special merit? The point guard skills Russia needed. Holden joined the team earlier this month. Henry Domercant, a scoring machine at Eastern Illinois, made a similar move in joining the Bosnian team.

7. French connection: Led by San Antonio's Tony Parker, France is going to be a force; the continued improvement its stars have made overseas should pay off in a lengthy run. Parker is the centerpiece, flanked by Golden State's Mickael Pietrus, new Phoenix acquisition Boris Diaw and recent Seattle draft pick Mickael Gelabale. Pietrus' development as a scorer last season bodes well for France, while receiving major minutes on a team filled with explosive wings should do wonders for Diaw as he prepares for his move to the Suns. He's an instinctive playmaker hoping to earn significant playing time with his new team, perhaps at the expense of fellow offseason pickup Raja Bell. The French should run, literally, through a Group C that features Slovenia and pro big men Rasho Nesterovic, Uros Skolar and Erazem Lorbek (Michigan State), whose height could cause problems.

8. Missing Lithuanians: Normally a force in the international game, Lithuania will be hindered heavily by the absence of its best players, as all of its NBA talent has opted not to suit up. Zydrunas Ilgauskas, having just re-upped with Cleveland for a hefty pay day, is resting. Sarunas Jasikevicius, perhaps the top shooter in Europe and one of its best guards, is preparing for his debut season with the Indiana Pacers. Darius Songaila, Linas Kleiza and Arvydas Macijauskas, recently signed by New Orleans, also begged off for various reasons. That opens the door for Turkey, fueled by Utah's Mehmet Okur and Orlando's Hedo Turkoglu, to step in and take Group B, although Croatia will also have its say.

Predicted group winners: Russia, Turkey, France, Serbia-Montenegro.

Final two to earn Japan 2006 berths: Spain, Greece.

1. It's not Skolar, it's Slokar.

2. French have lots of problems, and will have to at least qualify for quarterfinals. I hope they pick up the pieces and improve, but as a fan of Slovenia I rather would not want France to meet Slovenia. Their game against Bosnia will make the united or crushed. Writer didn't look up anything while writing this piece of shit. Only important connection to watch is Antoine(exDallas)-Tony(SA). That is the core of the problem and a solution.

3. Igor Rakocevic played for NBA team and has more of a NBA-style then European. When he came back here, he just used up his minutes. Writer was inconsistent to forget Igor's Minnesotta adventure.

4. Turkey to win? What was he smoking? I mean... That surreal! If he speaks fo global game, how he can... I mean, Croatia to be ignored on basis of Okur and Hedo?

5. Greece should be in Japan, but France is a winner of this group? So Slovenia is a decorum? Retarded he is not, inconsistent to the bone he surely is!

Do you imagine Spurs winning the nba title with Malik Rose at startign PF and Masenburg at starting C?

The french starting PF is a poor man Rose (Florent Pietrus, Mike brother)
and the starting center is a poor man Massenburg (Cyil Julian).

France has great guards and swingmen (Parker, Diaw, Pietrus, Rigaudeau, Gelabale) but without quality big men, you can't win a tournament.

Tony Mejia should stick to refining his work in the NBA because he clearly has no clue on how good France is. France is middle of the pack, at best, of all the Eurobasket teams participating. They are a donut team and any team with an inside presence should easily take advantage of the hole in the middle.

I thought Rigaudeau played well in the game Tony sat out.

Some questions though, how bad is Tony's sore calf, is that causing his poor shooting? What are the chemistry problems on the team, I know Tony was irked regarding Weis? Diaw had good game vs B/H. Does anyone know if Diaw played the point when Tony sat? The 7 assists seem to indicate it, but not watching, I cannot tell. Don't the Suns want Diaw to play backup point for Nash?

They may want Diaw to play the point, but is he capable of doing so? Did he actually play point in this game or was he the off guard?

Did not know that about Tony and Diaw.

I don't know if he plays PG in this game but he can't be an effective PG in nba. He is too slow to be PG.

Suns have no real backup PG.
The best thing to do for them is to use one of their undersized SG (barbosa and house) to take care of the ball and give the ball to diaw on offense to create something.

You can compare him to Brent Barry without the jumpshot and with more defensive intensity (He is too a freakin dunker).

Diaw has a lot of upside (more than Pietrus).

Boris is Tony's best friend, they were teamates when they were 16, they
phoned every day during the nba season, they used to spend the all star break together (at Las Vegas).

Don't the Suns want Diaw to play backup point for Nash?

exactly. If both of them can be a foundation for the team, then French become twice as hard to beat. Then they can go further towards the title. Last year Parker alone was not enough, so Antoine presence is as vital as Tony's game. French NBA connection is not at all so important or interesting as to national sport legends making two seperate quality teams. Bosnia prepared for Parker and was killed by Rigaudeau. Now that IS interesting to watch. Especially for Slovene people. ;)

Another quote by parker:
"I know i don't play at my level. With all the technical changes i am bringing to my shoot, i have lost the rythm. I am a bit lost. I felt well in limoges (last week), but i ve lost everything in here. When you start to miss quite often, you start to lose confidence. I am waiting for a big game. We have to build something on yesterday's victory and use it against Slovenia. This is THE game."

It is a bit scary.

Yes it is. But I respect him for the fact that he is trying to improve his game. Changing his shot must scare the hell out of him and I'm sure he's working really hard at it. It may be the cause for concern early in the season but I hope it'll pay off eventually.

France And Slovenia Both Await Big Night
By Yarone Arbel

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

18 September 2005
Since joining the European basketball family in 1993, Slovenia have yet to miss a EuroBasket, an achievement of which few teams can boast.

However, despite possessing some of Europe’s top basketball talent, Slovenia have yet to make a real impact on the event and have never qualified for the quarter-final stages.

Against France on Sunday, Slovenia can add a new chapter to their basketball history and a win would be enough to secure a place in the top eight.

Nobody is under any illusions as to the game’s significance. "It's the most important game in Slovenian basketball history, because it can put us, for the first time in history in the top 8," said Ales Pipan after the win over Greece.

Boris Diaw has been France's top performer so far at EuroBasket

"I especially would like to thank our fans because they were with us for 40 minutes, and I expect them to be here in the game against France as well," added Pipan whose team has been given a boost by the presence of several thousand Slovenian fans in Belgrade.

Pipan chose to cancel the morning practice and give his player more time to rest after the big win over Greece on Saturday, 68-56, a performance that has people talking about Slovenia as legitimate gold medal contenders.

After two days Slovenia are the best defensive rebounding team at EuroBasket, averaging 30 rpg. Slovenia can rely on skilled big men Radoslav Nesterovic, Primoz Brezec, Bostjan Nachbar and Erazem Lorbek on the boards, but rebounding is a team concept for Slovenia, with guards Sani Becirovic, Jaka Lakovic and Marko Milic pulling down 9 rebounds each over the first 2 games.

France waited over 6 quarters before showing up to EuroBasket 2005, but what coach Claude Bergeaud saw in the last 2 quarters of his side’s 79-62 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina gives him cause for optimism.

Boris Diaw's performance showed why he's in the NBA. Diaw was everywhere on court and carried his team to their first EuroBasket2005 win .But he is fully aware that a loss to Slovenia could spell the end of France’s EuroBasket hopes.

" It looks like the third place in our group will have to play against Serbia and Montenegro in the next round, and it's not very good to play against them in a do-or-die game in their home country," he said.

France have two big concerns going into the Slovenia game. The first is the continued poor performance of Tony Parker and the second is the health of Mickael Pietrus

After two games Parker is still without a free throw (0/3) or three-pointer (0/5) to his name. He has scored a total of only 12 points at 6/17 from 2 point range and is averaging 3.5 turnovers.

Pietrus has been in better form and was a key component in France’s win over Bosnia-Herzegovina with 22 points and 7 rebounds. However, he has a knee injury, and although he says he wants to play, it is unclear if he will be able to manage significant minutes.

Without Parker in good shape it will be almost impossible for France to progress to the latter stages of the tournament, and coach Bergeaud doesn't want to heap more pressure onto his star guard: "I hope Tony will comeback especially in shooting. He didn't have a lot of practice during preparation, and so we must control his time of game. If he plays too much in one game, he won't be able to finish the competition," he said.

After two games France are the worst three-point shooting side in the competition at only 6/32 (18.8%). France are also last in free throw percentage with a poor 49%. What has kept France alive so far is the offensive boards, where they lead the competition with an impressive average of 15.5 per game.

Bearing in mind that Slovenia are the tournament’s top defensive rebounding team, the battle for control of the boards may well be the decisive factor in which side emerges with a win.

Sounds like Tony has aligned his basketball with his bitching. Can't he produce outside of Pop's system? He had some really big, team-leader-type games in the losses.

I don't think Phoenix wants Diaw to play the traditional PG role, playing at the one position. They might want him to cause mismatches by initiating the offense through the 2/3/4 spots, however, similer to what McGrady does, but obviously to far lesser extent.

I'm excited to see the kid. He seems ready and willing to contribute and has been putting up some good numbers against NBA players/stars.

After 1st round of EC, Rasho is one of only ten players to achieve a double-double in one of the games. He's also the 6th rebounder after first 3 games with an average of 7 rebs per game. When it comes to defensive rebs, he's number 4 - following 3 NBA players: Nowitzky (Dallas), Khryapa (Portland) and Kirilenko (Utah).

As long as he's still a member of the Spurs, I think we should all be proud of him and let's hope that this is a sign he's improved his game.

The refs in this championship were (are) just awful. They were driving me crazy in every game I saw - regardless of which teams were playing.

It turns out that FIBA still hasn't ratified all of the contracts with the different pro leagues and they can't therefore use refs from the Euroleague and other similar pro leagues. Basically we are seeing refs working the EC that can not get in the Euroleague because they suck too much.

Greece is good at both ends of the floor. Excellent defenders and really the best team defense in Eurobasket 2005. They have guys who can score and take you off the dribble. Best of all, they are very well-coached. Their strategy against France to spread the floor and isolate the strengths of Papaloukas' ability to beat guys one-on-one off the dribble was the difference in that game (outside of what France did to themselves).

Greece was more mature and seasoned than France and their defense got Germany out of their comfort zone. Germany died by the three, just like they lived by it in it's two earlier games.

MVP Nowitzki Tops EuroBasket 2005 All-Tournament Team
By David Hein
25 September 2005

Germany's Dirk Nowitzki claimed the Most Valuable Player award at the 2005 EuroBasket and topped the competition's All-Tournament team.

Nowitzki won the honour - voted by international media representatives at Belgrade Arena - for leading Germany to Sunday's final against Greece. The Dallas Mavericks star went into the final as the tournament's leading scorer (26.7 ppg) and second-leading rebounder (10.8 rpg) and shot blocker (1.8 blpg).

Nowitzki carried his team, twice hitting shots in the final seconds to will Germany into the final and guaranteeing them their second EuroBasket medal following their gold medal at the 1993 championships in Munich.

Nowitzki was also voted by the media as the top power forward of the tournament.

He was joined on the All-Tournament team by Greek center Lazaros Papadoloulos (11.3 ppg and 3.7 rpg) and Greece's point guard Dimitrios Diamantidis, who led the tournament in assists (5.3 per game) had 5.2 rebounds and 6 points a game. Diamantidis also hit a three-pointer in the waning seconds against France to move the Greeks into the final.

France's Boris Diaw was picked as the top small forward for his all around game (13.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 3.4 apg, 1.0 spg, 1.3 blpg) in leading the French to the bronze medal.

Spain's Juan Carlos Navarro was selected as the top shooting guard, averaging 25.2 points and 1.2 steals as well as hitting 69-79 (87.3 per cent) free throws for the fourth-placed Iberians.

Very good selection, only Kirilenko is missing but Russia isn't in the top 6 and that cost him a well-deserved spot.
Diamatidis should play in the NBA, he is really a strong defensive point guard, and he killed us with his shoot at the buzzer.
Boris Diaw was the best of the french players, but that's because Parker and Pietrus were tired of the NBA season while Diaw played little time with Atlanta. I hope he will play more with the suns, he has a good chance against guys like Bell and Jackson, he can maybee make the starting five, and him and Tony will meet in the Playoffs.

The Greek commentator said that the Lakers are going to offer a contract to Papaloukas. Laker scouter(s) were watching the games for quite awhile.

They could have drafted Fran Vazquez this year but they took Bynum instead at #10. Orlando got Vazquez at #11. Either one of them would not really help them this year but Vasquez is the more basketball-mature player. LA took Bynum and Turiaf and could have done much better.

Papaloukas was awesome in Eurobasket but he's only 6'6-1/2 or 6'7" (200cm) and the Lakers need a bigman more. Vazquez is a solid 6'10" and very skilled.

I don't know about Turiaf.

On another subject, I'm not sure if it was posted elsewhere but in the Lithuania win over Slovenia, Rasho had 2 points and 2 reb. in 10 minutes, while Javtokas led Lith. in scoring with 22 points, 5 reb. in 27 minutes.

It makes sense to play it safe. I was reporting stats. Captain Rasho had a tough series, though and I'm sure he's disappointed.

Rasho had two double doubles in five games, lost only to the silver medalists, and helped earn Slovenia it's first spot ever in the W.C.

He really ought to be at least a little bit pleased.

Yes. I forgot about Lithuania.

Okey, let me give you some help there, angel.

Slovenia has beaten all but the reigning European champion and the new silver medalist. Not just that, Slovenia has been the only one who has beaten the new European champion and was second only to Greece on wins over France who won the bronze. I think we should be satisfied. And still...winning a medal would be sweet.

History told us, that we cannot be better then 10th place. Now the stakes are higher.

I posted the following on Slovenian National Team thread:

After the game Slokar said the guys were just trying to avoid any injuries today because it would be extremely stupid if anyone would get hurt in a game that doesn't really count. So I guess the Javtokas - Rasho comparison doesn't really show anything. Besides...I heard that Javtokas hasn't signed with any club for the upcoming season yet, so he probably tried to put up some good stats today.

You can see that Rasho played only for 10 minutes so Brezec could get some rest. Now, what would Pop say if Rasho got injured in a meaningless game?

By reading your post, it's like Slovenia should be considered as good as the European champion because they beated them in the first round?

Beat a good team doesn't mean that you are better or equal, you need to be good in important games that's all!

If a bad team beats San Antonio in the regular season it doesn't mean that this team is as good as the current champions, they need to beat them during the playoffs series to pretend to be better or equal.

Who gives a shit if the Suns had a better record than ours in the regular season as long as we kicked their ass in the playoffs?!

Yeah, I agree with that. Slovenia wasn't a real competitor in the past for the European Championship, but with young talents such as Beno or Brezec you can cause trouble to other teams for the next WC! :king

I'm just tired of listening some dudes saying that Slovenia is "sooo good", your team is getting better no doubt, but you can't pretend to be the best in Europe yet.

And I think that Greece winning the E.C. was a steal like what they did with the Soccer E.C. 2 years go!

No one would have put a penny on Greece to be the champs!

Serbia, Lithuania and Spain were the clear favorites!

I don't expect Greece to repeat.

Single elimination tournaments get real interesting because of the luck ( for lack of a better word) factor involved.

An established great team just needs to have one bad night and everything can change.

Yep, but you can't compare a 1st round game and a single elimination game (quarter, semi, finals).

You have to be good when it's important, don't matter who beated who during non-elimination games..
It's in these crucial games that you can see the players and the team's limits, that's those that can elevate their games that are the Champs by the end!

I wouldn't be so sure about that one. Right now, Greece don't have superstars, but they play a very very solid all-around game. Really, really, tough defense, and very balanced scoring, something like the Pistons. I remember the Olympics, there wasn't a moment in that game where I could say "that's it, we won", until the clock reached zero.
