If some of you highly skilled highly knowledgeable STs want to help me bag the ultimate bang-for-the-buck laptop in the $500 - 550 range on Black Friday, bring it!
Refurbished? If factory with warranty, ok. Otherwise nah.

If i have to camp out with a sleeping bag and provide photographic updates to ST, i will do so.

Daily user, not a gamer, don't HAVE to have i5 or i7 chip.
Screens gotta be 15' or 17" unless a lesser screen you tell me the rest of the unit is great.

Places I've looked so far just to get a range:

If you're willing to shell out 500+ aren't you better off building your own rig?

500 for a laptop is abit much. Specially if all you're going to do is look for gossiping sites.

I always see i3 laptops for around $300 or so around Black Friday. What's the fucking point of the i5 and i7 laptops anyways? Most of them are just hyperthreaded dual cores with slight clock bumps over the i3s. It seems like only the really expensive i7 laptops have an actual quadcore hyperthreaded i7.

I'm not sure if the laptop i3s are the same as the desktop counterparts, but if they are, battery power would be a reason. The i3 has no turbo, they're just clocked much higher and run at that speed (using that much juice) all the time. The i5/i7 will shut down cores, and even step down clock rates significantly while not doing intensive work (ie: browsing files on the desktop or even reading webpages). In that scenario at least an i5 makes sense.

It looks like at least on Broadwell they have frequency scaling down for power saving, though I think you're right about Haswell and before.

Yeah, that's why I was asking if it was like the Desktop CPUs... although it looks like you only get two options 2.1Ghz or 600Mhz... which kinda sucks, I bet it locks to 600Mhz when it either heats up a lot or battery is really down...

An i5-4200U is also 15W TDP, base at 1.6 Ghz and 4 steps (IIRC) to 2.6 Ghz, which is crazy since it has 2 more cores...

600 MHz ain't bad though. I turned on all Cstates in my BIOS so my Xeon drops to 800 MHz when under light load like web browsing, and then sticks at the max all cores turbo of 3.6 GHz when gaming, compressing a video, doing a calculation in MATLAB, etc. I imagine that a 15W i5-4200U probably has a really low idle multiplier too around 6-8x, I'd be pissed if I bought a laptop that didn't have that kind of low frequency scaling.

You mean P-States (what used to be known as Intel SpeedStep)... C-States determine when CPUs stop executing instructions entirely and whether they keep their state or it's a full shutdown.

Unfortunately Intel for some reason does not have a public list of P-States for their various CPUs that I could find. So unless you have the CPU and dump the ACPI tables, it's hard to know what they do on the i3. I know for a fact that i5/i7 has at least 4 P-States for the Turbo boost, but also a few more for low frequency (like your Xeon). Obviously, the more steps, the better the system can regulate frequency and save power.

http://www.theblackfriday.com/Toshiba-Satellite-15-6-inch-Laptop-wIntel-Core-i7-Windows-10--S55-/25213.htm

Here's another laptop that appears to be a good value:
http://www.theblackfriday.com/Toshiba-15-6-inch-Laptop-wIntel-Core-i7-8GB-RAM/22995.htm

The thing with this last one is that it appears to be a model specifically for Black Friday, which kinda sucks because you can't find reviews for it.
Toshiba makes quality laptops, but it's possible they cut a few corners (ie: backlit keyboard) to make it cheaper. You should still check it out at your local Staples if they have some, sounds like a good deal with the base specs.

Most 15" i7 laptops go for $650+... so these are fairly good deals, IMO

Netflix and YouTube has some, plus content will keep on coming out if the TVs keep coming down in price like this... I've seen even GTA V running on a 960 in 4k doing better FPS than the XBox One or PS4, tbh...

Plus at this price, it's a better value than buying a 60in 1080p TV...

What the best buy guy told you about mismatched boards is bullshit, BUT you need to be aware that a lot of these black friday electronics are indeed special products made for the occasion. They're cut down versions of other, more expensive products. For example, the laptops might not have illuminated keyboards, or might have cheaper/slower HDDs, cheaper plastic case, etc. This isn't done by Sam's Club, it's done by the companies that make these products based on orders made by the retailers, that want a product at a certain price-point. It's normally easy to tell too, because the model numbers are basically unknown, which means the model was specifically made for black friday. That doesn't mean they're bad products. I bought my current Samsung TV on Black Friday, and while it only has 2 HDMI inputs and no Wifi, it's a full blown nice SMART HDTV, with the nice Samsung screen, etc. Manufacturers will honor the warranty on them (it's made by them after all).

The Sam's Club is the best deal, IMO. i7 laptops are just not available that cheap, generally speaking, especially not with 12GB of RAM.

I would rank the 17" best buy one 2nd, but you're going to need to add at least another 4GB of RAM to that.

The rest I don't think they're that much of a great value, tbh...

Sounds good. You probably saved some money.

That 6200U is kinda weird, it's an i5, but with 2 cores and hyperthreading. It will show as 4 processors under windows, but for what you want to do, it's going to run just fine. The nifty thing is that it's an ULV (Ultra low voltage) CPU, so your battery life should be above average, always a plus on a laptop.
