View Full Version : Spurs: Is San Antonio the worst sport city? Should the spurs be handed to another city?

Never have I seen very little support for a team playing historic defense. Every Game staduim has always noticable empty seats. Spurs fans like to boast about TD yet he is seating on 120k post over 700k post.
I bet you majority of those votes are from Argentina, France and other countries overseas.
Spurs fan logic "Timmy doesnt care about these shit". Real reason "im tol fat, cant move".
But future players do and as future players see how poorly supported the spurs are from the community eventually no player would want to play in San Anotnio. Will probably collapsd once Kawhi retires.

I bag on SA a lot, but they're far from the worst. They're a mediocre city for sports, lots of fat lard beer chugging frijoleros to root for their team and they're loyal enough. I would say Atlanta, San Diego and Phoenix are the lowest of the low. SA is like somewhere in the middle, nothing to be proud about but nothing to really be ashamed about either.

How many 65+ win teams had noticable empty seats every game? I was told the tickets were sold but people would rather watch the game at the staduim bar so they can stuff their mouths with fatty burgers and burritos

There's a lot of reasons people don't up show to the games. SA is a majority working class city, so poorer people have no time to always go to the games. The richers show up only on important games and the playoffs. AT&T center is in a shitty location. More people would show up if it was downtown. People prefer to watch the games at home because SA traffic gets Austin bad from 4-6 pm almost every day. Spurs fans are spoiled as we have won lots of championships. I've gotten tickets for free but sometimes don't go cause I'm fuckin tired working 12 hrs a day. Just want to go home, take a shower, eat, smoke a few bowls and watch game, then go to sleep.

I think we should share some home games with Austin and rename them the SA/Austin Spurs. It would be fuckin badass celebrating in sixth street after wining a playoff series and a championship.

As usual, OP has invented a myth that has little to do with reality... Of the 11 games tonight, 8 have more available tickets than the Spurs. And that's against Minnesota, a team with minimum drawing power.

:lol The Spurs have sold out many home games for years. Just bc there are isn't an ass in the seat doesn't mean that the seat isn't paid for. It usually is, the person just didn't show up for the game for whatever reason. The Spurs are doing just fine with.fan support and currently rank #12 in overall attendance for the 2015-2016 season, ahead of teams like OKC, Celtics, Rockets, etc.

This x1000. it's probably in the absolute worst area of SA. Disagree about the traffic though. Yeah, it gets bad during that time but Austin is ALWAYS bad all day long

Like.any other fanbase, Spurs fans wait for marquee matchups.
Hey OP. Go Fuck Yourself!
Keep on showing how fucking clueless you are.
Ever see one of those sock puppet shows where the same guy is playing both the antagonist and the protagonist? yeah..
Its alright. San Antonio's success is always a blessing no matter the attendance. The attendance is also probably low because fans are too confident in the team. I mean..how long has it been since the Spurs were on a 5 to 7 game losing streak. Think about it? Success for this long...and reaching the claiming the title more than five times, the fans..are satisfied.

That really has alot to do with it. I usually go to 5-7 regular season games a year and try to go to as many playoff games as possible. The regular season games just don't have the same excitement.
The ATT center is rocking during playoff games though. Went to game 6 against the Clippers last year(awful) and in 2014 went to Dallas game 7, 2 games against Portland, and two games against OKC. Playoff game atmosphere is just on another level.

I'm from SoCal, so I can't comment on the behavior of Spurs fans who live in the city, but the fans there seem very passionate for the Spurs, and even better, they don't chimp out after a title win.
Los Angeles is by far the worst sports city in the country. Stabbings in parking lots, rioting AFTER title wins, and fairweather attendance/devotion.
Some will cite the good attendance numbers of the Dodgers, Lakers, etc as "proof" LA is a great sports town. But I can tell you a good amount of those "fans" are transplants from Bumfuck, Somewhere, who go to sporting events like people go to the movies. Just for something to do on a night out.

Imagine being a Lakers/Clips fan and having to get to Staples Center during rush hour. At least we have subways in NYC that make MSG and Barclays Center a breeze. Boston, Philly and DC all have easy transit options too. But there are a ton of cities with crappier traffic than San Antonio and even Austin.
But the OP should stop counting empty seats at the start of the third quarter in the lower bowl (more no shows) and compare it to other cities.

Big Dummy, you can now ride the metro train from West LA to STAPLES (that's what I did for the Spurs/Cripples series).

I would attest to that. Atlanta, they are more into college sports. Outside of the Braves, their fans aren't that great. Falcons got a following from the Mike Smith years but that soon has died down. I live here in Atlanta so I know. Hawks hardly get any support. Most people here are Lebron, Curry, WB, etc fans. If the Hawks get to a finals I am sure their Support would rise again. The only reason their games are sold out is because nearly 6 mil people live here in ATL. So its not hard putting 18K seats in Phillips.

Honestly most warm weather states fanbases aren't as good. Pretty much every Florida city has a shit fan base. Only fanbase I can think of thats great in Cali is the Bay Area. Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio all have surprisingly good fan bases for being warm weather states. They are definitely outliers though. Your best fan bases though unsurprisingly are going to be in huge markets in cold areas. Chicago, Boston, New York, etc.
Sadly, I have to agree with the Florida fan base mentality. Orlando suffers greatly from fair weather fans. I wish we had Boston fan mentality but that's something that is traditional for Boston being that the old folks grew up watching the celtics and Sox. Orlando wasn't even a major city until the late 80's, early 90's.

Partially that and also the fact that there is alot of transplants in Florida from northern states who root for another team. Plus in warm weather states you can actually go outside and do shit in the winter. In colder states during the winter you don't have much choice but to stay inside.
Boston, Chicago, Philly, New York all have great fanbases, but they also suffer from being delusional as shit since they are such diehards.

Implying San Antonio is the worst sports city in a non-troll thread is simply retarded. San Antonio loves their Spurs, but explaining why there are so many open seats is another story.
According to ESPN, attendance is about the same over the last five years, but it's still apparent due to the empty seats this year that there are fewer people going to the games.

Warps my mind, how is the SBC Center (or whatever it's being called these days) not smack dab in the center of town? All of the San Antonio tourists would have something extra to do that wouldn't require a taxi or rental car.
It's amazing how San Antonio has been able to support an NBA team for so long, if they had the Raptors, Wizards, Bucks or Warriors/Clippers (until recently) the past 25 years, they probably would have moved.
In theory (because the Spurs have become ingrained as a SA institution), the team would do much better in Austin.

Hmm, that's pretty iffy on Houston. There's a solid core of Rockets diehards for certain but basketball is pretty meh to people in Houston and in Texas in general compared to football. For proof, look at University of Houston's home attendance, even when they were Phi Slama Jama plus the fact that the Texans, who can't be confused with the Patriots, have never had an unsold ticket and have a very long waiting list. The Rockets are by far the most successful sports franchise but even they struggled selling playoff tickets during the first title run and have some of the most lukewarm in-arena fans in the entire NBA, if they even show up in their seats.
The only reason the Spurs and Mavs do so well is because they've been so good for so long plus the Spurs are the only game in their town.

Yep, that has alot to do with the Spurs great support they get. Although I think the city could handle a football team as well. As you said Texans are crazy about football, plus with Austin only an hour and a half or so up the road could draw in people from there for football games as well. They would just to need to make sure they put the stadium somewhere on the NE side of town off of 35 preferably.

The NFL is definitely something San Antonio could and should have. The genius in it is that people from other areas could become season ticket holders and PSL holders, including from Houston and Dallas (both have sizable season ticket waiting lists for the Texans and Cowboys).
I don't think the MLB will happen any time soon and the NHL would probably be better suited for Austin.
