SAN ANTONIO – The way Tony Parker sees it, two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Kawhi Leonard owes a debt of thanks to teammate Tim Duncan and former Spur Bruce Bowen.

Duncan has been named to the league’s All-Defensive team 15 times, the most in NBA history, and Bowen, who retired in 2009, earned a spot on the squad in seven of the eight seasons he played with San Antonio. But Leonard is the only Spur in franchise history who has been honored as Defensive Player of the Year.

But I think back in the day, the Spurs didn’t get that much respect. We had to earn that respect. Now everybody respects the Spurs, so they don’t forget Kawhi. That’s just my personal opinion.

“I felt like Bruce and Timmy should have won before, but it’s just like that. Everybody who won deserves it, that’s for sure, but I felt like we’ve been a great defensive team for a long time, and Timmy and Bruce, they never won it, so that’s weird. Veteran guard Manu Ginobili was asked if Leonard is the best defensive player he’s ever seen during his career.

“Well, it’s not a big competition. It’s him or Bruce,” Ginobili said. “Bruce was remarkable. He did less plays that draw highlights, but he was as consistent as it gets. With Kawhi, the fact that his blocks, his steals and dunks, and that type of play, he draws more attention. But both are just incredible and it’s not easy to get a defensive player of the year award.”

The Spurs never quite had a player like Bowen, a relentless lockdown defender who always guarded the opposition’s best perimeter shooter. In short, Bowen embodied the Spurs’ philosophy that winning basketball is grounded in outstanding defense.

Everyone was a Duncan fan, so no one felt the need to shit on other players to pump Duncan up. He is and likely always will be the pillar of the franchise. Kawhi isn't the same way. We all like him, just as MOST of us like every core Spur. He's awesome, so we like him a bit. But he's not Duncan, and more importantly, he wasn't when he showed up. Because he wasn't the franchise from day one, you had him in the usual system. As awesome as Kawhi is now, he's not yet at the level (especially in terms of team accomplishments) as Manu and probably Tony were. If those guys can (and indeed did) have Churches, so too can Kawhi.

You're not going to rationalize that folks like Apa and YGWHI are normal fans just because they like the best player. Most of these player fans are just kids who have only been basketball fans for a couple of years and judging by the way post constantly on this thread they have never played basketball or any type of sport. We call them, no ballers. They are low BBIQ as they lack experience to know the game. Watching ESPN or a couple of games in tv or playing video games is not got the same as playing team ball.
The Spurs have gotten the respect of the NBA and the fans because of what was built decades ago. I don't recall ever seeing so many spurs fans on the road as I do now.

Thats on the advancement of advanced stats. That has nothing to do with what bowen or duncan didnt win in the past.

Duncan and Bowen, didn't win for a variety of reasons. One, they had each other and even though Duncan had a far greater impact, the thinking went, that they at least somewhat cancelled each other out. Two, neither fit the stereotypical description of a great defender and before advanced stats and in depth analysis, this unfortunately mattered. Three, the Spurs weren't nearly as respected then as they are now.

Leonard was obviously a significant part of restoring the defense to elite, but so too were Duncan getting his knee more stable and the additions of Splitter and Green.

YES. The Spurs' teams of the 90's (really the first two championships) into the 00's, the Spurs were always in the top 2 or 3 defensively.

With the exception of that 3 or so year period that you described, elite defense has ALWAYS been a hallmark of a Popovich team. I agree with you also that Kawhi has brought the team back to a level that is as good or better than the Duncan/Robinson teams, but it has always been the thing that the Spurs have hung their hats on.
