Buddy, you always have great takes but in this case I really do think Pepe was the best player for Portugal at the Euro's, I was shocked at how consistent he was compared to how much of a knucklehead he was in the 2014 World Cup. Even Ronaldo seems to agree, but then again he's completely delusional so it is hypocritical of me to quote him here, but there you go:

As for Bale, I genuinely think he's top 5-6 in the world, he is phenomenal and I think he's playing the best he's ever played for in Madrid. I think he's much more instrumental to Madrid's success than Ronaldo. Fortunately for them Vasquez isn't a bad backup while Bale is injured.

i also miss Xavi, with all the injuries Barca have had this season their midfield is absolute shit. Was getting Argentina PSTD with them having some games bypassing the midfield entirely and long balling to the forwards from out the back.

Atlético isn't a small team, they aren't at their best now though. Chelsea, Man United, PSG, Man City, Barça, Juve, Bayern and Madrid could probably pay Griezmann more salary, but that's about it. The problem is that out of those teams, only few of them are better than Atlético and those are already set at FW positions.

True and Real have the much tougher schedule than Barca the rest of the way.

I just don't fully trust Luis Enrique. Barca has had lots of injuries which aren't his fault, but the team was dead tired in the final 20 minutes and he doesn't use any of his two remaining subs. He's just too stubborn and absolutely horrible at making adjustments during a game. He went through a bad spell during January a couple years ago and team went on to win the treble, but this is the worst Barca have looked in nearly 10 years. Let's hope it's just a phase and not a long term reality.

imo lack of rotation is just a partial consequence of the real problem, lack of tactical variety is the key for both teams. Zidane isn't a monkey like enrique and through his rotation (given by personnel given by $$$$$$) he makes Real more adaptable. This is good coaching because it hides penaldo getting old by not being overreliant on him, like say Barcelona are with misty. Barcelona just play the same style and can't adapt to bad runs/games where their normal strategy leads to stagnation, their only reply is to over attack and expose themselves at the back. That's why they've been having these meltdowns lately, because they have no tactical answer for playing badly. So yes, a real coach would do good for them, but imo it's a bigger problem as the roster is entrenched into this playstyle mentality.

Great post. When I was talking about rotation in the past seasons, I just meant both teams looked absolutely exhausted during their slumps and the lack of rotation had them burning out in the second half of their respective seasons.

I think Barca has been "found out" a bit as even teams below the top 3 are high pressing the hell out of Barca this season and Barca has no plan B. It feels like since the midfield has gone to shit (Gomes was a bad signing, Denis Suarez is great but doesn't play nearly enough, and Busquets has been very up and down) the team tries to hoof the ball up the pitch and cross their fingers for MSN to do something amazing. However, Neymar hasn't scored in 1000 minutes (seriously) of La Liga play, Suarez is off and his first touch has completely abandoned him, and this is the deepest I've seen Messi play for Barca in a while. And when Messi isn't playing deep he's playing much more centrally as oppose to on the wing where everything is now feeling congested up front.

I absolutely agree about Barca's lack of adaptability being their downfall.

I agree, they had a lot of talent tbh and played beautiful football, but imo they would have a lot of trouble with equally talented but physically dominant sides like the galacticos, 90s milan, late 90s france. They were the equivalent of today's warriors in the NBA, crazy offense and some quality defenders but lacking a lot of size, so not quite a GOAT side in my book.
