To think I wanted Baez(historic strikeout rate) and Ross(generally useless on the field last year) gone this year in the off season. Never have I ever been so glad to be so wrong.

Congrats on the crazy win, b

This feels great, no doubt. But the boys in blue got a lot of work ahead of them. 8 more wins worth, to be exact.

Obviously you never want it go to a do or die situation in baseball. But if it must, then these Cubs playing at Wrigley is in fact the best case scenario. Their home numbers(pitching, hitting & fielding) were downright dominant.

Seriously wtf happened to Murphy last fall? Dude has been unreal since the start of the 15 Playoffs, he should've won the World Series MVP as well.

How do you figure? He sucked in the World Series.

I get all that, but sometimes there's less pressure on the road. There are so many ghosts at Wrigley. Either way it was huge for them to win Game 4, especially how they won. Coming back like that has got to be a huge psychological boost not only to the Cubs themselves but to their fans. When you're always waiting for the other shoe to drop and it doesn't, that's major.

At any rate, I'd like to see a 1995 Indians-type outcome for the Cubs- win a ton of games, have one of the best seasons in franchise history, get to the World Series for the first time in eons, then lose (to my Tribe, natch.) If the Indians weren't in it, I have to admit that despite my dread at how obnoxious their fans would be, I'd like to see the Cubs pull it off.

That was basically an elimination game, since the Dodgers would have zero chance at the series if they blew Kershaw's start. Cubs are still big faves. I actually think Dodger stadium works more in the Cubs' favor due to their power and speed. And you have to like Arrieta and Lackey against Hill and Urias. It's on Hill. He has to provide the bridge twixt CK & KJ.

He doesn't have to be perfect, but, he's got to be really close.

& Roberts must resist the urge to go conventional and open up that rotation. It's too late for that, much too late. You have to go for it now. Grab the riding crop and lead them to the mound again & again. They want to be led, by Roberts. They'll do whatever he tells them to do. Tell them---Lead them.

He must pitch CK in Los Angeles and if necessary back in Chicago. However it has to be planned out it must happen. He must make 3 starts.

Honestly, he doesn't really over power hitters. He has a 6'7" frame with that sweeping delivery that is just a bitch to hit, a la Randy Johnson or even Bumgarner (he's 4" shorter, but is also a lefty with a wide delivery and knee breaking curve).

Jays really need to send Martin to the glue factory. They also need more speed at the top of the lineup and in right field. Bautista is too slow for the outfield now. According to the metrics, the fly ball he missed in the first inning that turned into a double was caught 98% of the time.

Indians are a juggernaut right now. Went through a Sox team every one had pegged as a shoe-in for the pennant like they weren't there. Jays have a nice foundation with their pitching staff and defense. 3rd in the AL in ERA+ and 1st in the AL in defensive efficiency. Funny enough, it's the offense that's the problem. The Jays were just slightly above league average in OPS and OPS+ and lead the league in grounding into double plays.

Pillar needs to work on his swing and turn into a viable lead off hitter, Martin needs the old yeller treatment, and Bautista should not be resigned. A few tweaks, and you guys will contend next year again.

Pillar is just too impatient to ever be a leadoff guy imo. As Great as Cleveland has been, the Jays at bats have been laughable (as they were over the last month of the season, with the league-worst offense).

Their inability to drive home RISP is probably bordering on historic. To have Bautista blame the strike zone (iffy at times) openly is just silly. There's no reason why Miller should be striking out 80%+ of the lineup over the course of 3 games. Or not being able to get to Tomlin at all in game 2.

I don't think the Rangers choked. Looking at their stats, they ranked just slightly above average in all the key metrics, while Jays were top 3 in ERA+ and defeff.

Texas was kind of like the 2011 Spurs. A decent team that gutted out wins and performed far above expectation.

The Red Sox looked good for about a month towards the end of the season, then fell into a big slump going into the playoffs. The rest of their season was a good offense and an inconsistent defense with terrible pitching; they were the favorites because the rest of the crop was mediocre (Blue Jays/Indians)/prone to choking (Rangers/Orioles). Indians have turned it on and look like they did early on, but some of the credit has to go to the AL just not being up to par.

I think that patience can be taught. And yeah, the Jays offense has been dead for two months. But like in any sport, defense wins titles, and the Jays pitching and defense were elite this season, and all the players who contributed to that are young, so the Jays have a bright future.

Rangers choked in every way imaginable: their "Aces" got annihilated, their best hitters (Beltre, Andrus, Odor) batted well below .200, they failed to convert routine defensive plays, Banister played horrid lineups and continued to use relievers that got lit up all season, and when they actually managed to get runners on and into scoring position they couldn't score them. While the Rangers were definitely not as good as their record indicated (despite looking that way in May/June), they should've gone at least five in the ALDS and prolly won it.

But that begs the question, was it a choke or just the Rangers being the Rangers? :lol

They had only a +8 run differential for a reason, and I think those reasons reared their head in the series.

But I do agree they choked on some key plays. In a vacuum, however, I think the Jays are the better team. Better on "paper" at every aspect of the game.

Average stats in the regular season or not, you don't leave 20 men on base in a series or have several players fumble routine ground balls multiple times a game.

Bauer's accident made it a necessity. If Tito ran out Kluber on regular rest in Game 5 he would not have a Game 7 starter... at all. Pitch him today and they can come back to him in Game 7 on three days' rest if it comes to that. Not ideal, but better than starting Ryan Merritt in Game 7 of the ALCS.

For a team with a 3-1 lead the Indians are in a really tenuous position. Right now their rotation is completely cashed. I'm trying not to get pissed at Bauer, but it's tough. He really hurt the team with that drone accident, and then he's taunting the Toronto fans and mouthing off on Twitter after Game 3. He needs to lay low and hope the team bails his butt out.

I'm just in the frame of mind that...should Indians really be looking at Game 7? I know it may sound short-sighted but there's a reason why only 1 team in the last century has come back from 3-0. I just feel they should set themselves up to close this series ASAP vs trying to set up for down the road. Merritt loses game 4, oh well (look what the BP was able to do after Bauer got hurt). You got Kluber on full rest for Game 5. I'd hate to be Kluber in a game 7 where the opposing team just came back from 0-3 in any case.

I get what you're saying but there just aren't any ideal options right now with the state of the Tribe's starters being what it is. At least they didn't use Miller and Cody Allen today, that's one bright spot from our POV. Sanchez pitched a hell of a game today, BTW. Toronto is just too good to get swept.

Sanchez came through for sure. Now I still give the Jays a <10% chance of coming back but if they get to Merritt early it can get interesting. I don't see Jays getting to Miller this series. And I'll probably root for Indians vs whoever comes out of the NL.

It's not out of the question, tbh. They just did it against the Orioles and Rangers. And Cleveland's starting pitching is looking real shaky now. Toronto has a great pitching staff who should keep it close, they just can't afford to stop scoring runs again.

The Orioles and Rangers are known chokers tbh; winning four in a row against the likes of those two is different than winning four in a row against a team with this much talent on both sides of the ball. Yes, their starting pitching might be in trouble, but Cleveland still has an elite bullpen capable of winning games by themselves.

:lol thinking the Blue Jays will win four in a row. Indians will close this out tomorrow.

Maybe, I don't know. I actually think Toronto has a better club than the Indians just in terms of their overall roster. My concern is that this series will regress to the mean, meaning these two clubs should go six or seven based on how they compare overall. That's what happened in the 2007 ALCS, imo: the Red Sox were better than the Indians and the series ended really as it should've all along.

Of course, the Indians haven't lost more than three games in a row all season, so there is that. But the longer this series goes on the more it "favours" Toronto. I'll be nervous until the 27th out of the fourth win for the Tribe.

JoeTait75

TBH for a lot of their history the Indians haven't been chokers, they've just sucked. When you're going 60-102, 61-101 and 57-105 that isn't choking, you just blow.

Mesa, I know, but teams blow one-run ninth-inning leads all the time. It could have happened in April against the Twins.

Hill pitched a fuckin' shiny diamond tonight. His curveball and control were spot on all night aside from the 2nd. Dodgers really excel against right handed pitching, so this game isn't too much of a surprise, even against Arrieta. Urias tomorrow, which will be a tough one to win. Kid has great stuff, but I'm not sure he's ready for this big of a moment. Then Maeda in game 5 supposedly, but if we lose tomorrow, then I think Kersh goes again on short rest, setting up a possible bullpen platoon game for a game 7 (Rich Hill, Kersh in the Madbum role, and Jansen to close). That's how I'd do if I were Roberts.

Series ain't over by a long shot.

GG, Lefty. Urias has a bright future, and he didn't necessarily pitch badly, just made a couple of rookie mistakes. If he would've stayed high in the zone with fastballs against Heyward and just spam curveballs against Russell, he probably gets out the inning giving up only one run.

Roberts is in a tough spot now. Do you roll out Kershaw tomorrow? Lester is a big time post-season lefty, and the Dodgers are totally anemic against lefties. I don't see any scenario aside from a complete Cubs' meltdown where Kenta Maeda, et al come out of this with a win.

I think you have to go for broke here. Can't see the Dodgers taking two straight in Wrigley facing Hendricks and Arrieta.

But Roberts could also be thinking if he starts Kershaw in game 5, and he loses, then it's game over. On the other hand, if the Dodgers lose tomorrow, you have a fully rested Kershaw going in game 6. Win that, and all the pressure shifts to the Cubs obviously for a game 7 in which Arrieta will start, who is probably the pitcher the Dodgers match up best with.

It's not an easy decision for Roberts, and speaks to how our starting rotation is simply over matched.

You start CK in 6 and try to bank a lead of some import so you can sneak him out and hold him back for 7. If that doesn't work you must leave him in as long as needed to save Jansen & Hill for 7. Then you send CK to bullpen in 7, he ain't to sit in the dugout. Have Hill go as far as is prudent then bring Jansen and finish it with CK. Don't try and finish it with Jansen. Switch it to CK. Still like the Dodgers' chances. Their inability to hit lefties is ridiculous, but thankfully they won't see Lester again this series and they've done well enough against Hendricks and Arrieta. They also get Kershaw in game 6; could be another situation he chokes but, if not, you get a winner-take-all in game 7 with all the pressure on the Cubs.

The bitter truth is that K is not a 1. He may be a 2, most likely a 3, but, he is just not a 1. We're going to have to admit that and shove him down to 3, put Maeda & Urias under him and go and buy a 1 & 2.

Damn, we were up 2-1 in this series with 2 more in CA.. This is a shame.

Location. Location. Location.

CK's location, obviously due to pressure, seems to crash in the post-season. Throwing strikes isn't enough, you have to throw strikes in pinpoint locations with margins of error of less than 5". Kershaw seems incapable of doing that consistently in the playoffs. Contrast him with Hendricks, who is painting every area he needs to hit.

I knew we were outmatched this series, but the Dodgers choking asses didn't even make this game fun (unless you're a Cubs fan). I wanted to at least see some tight late innings shit and Wrigley's collective booty hole getting tight, but the Dodgers couldn't even do that. Fuckin' bums.

Anyhow, congrats Lefty20 and FkLA.

Fivehead threw only 3 TDs to 7 INTs in the playoffs that year. His playoff passer rating that season was lower than any other Super Bowl "winning" QB. His defense dragged him to it by only giving up 16.3 PPG in the playoffs.

Big Dummy, he went up against the top 3 defenses that season: Ravens/Cheatriots/Bears along w/ the Chiefs who had a very good pass defense that season.

He outplayed Brady & dragged the Colts to victory after an 18 point deficit, the 18-point comeback remains the biggest in an NFL championship game.

Isn't Fivehead supposed to be the greatest ever, according to his dickriders? I don't care about how good the defenses were - if he was as good as advertised, he'd have made something happen instead of riding his defense.

I don't care what his record is against Brady. Brady's a faggot too. Both of them are nothing compared to the true GOAT QBs.

Five Heads ISN'T the best ever (:lol) but he is more accomplished than Kerchoke. Pey-Pey pulled off the biggest comeback against "Mr. Clutch" Grady meanwhile Kerchoke got out-dueled by a minimum salary pitcher.

Montana/Steve Young are the two best SB winning QBs & I'll take Drew Brees over Pey-Pey/Grady.

JoeTait75

The Indians are playing with house money. Not many people in and around Cleveland thought they'd be in the World Series, especially after the wave of injuries to their pitchers. In fact long-time Tribe beat reporter Paul Hoynes openly wrote them off after Carlos Carrasco got hurt.

http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2016/09/sept_17_the_day_cleveland_indi.html

So it's a pleasant surprise that they're here. As far as the Tribe's championship drought is concerned there isn't much pressure there, either. IMO the Tribe's drought has always been secondary to the overall civic sports drought. The year 1964 always had more meaning than the year 1948, and 1964 is dead and buried. If the Tribe wins it'll be amazing, but if they lose it won't be the end of the world. Just getting this far has been a great accomplishment.

FWIW I do think the Cubs have the superior team, but I won't pick against these Indians.

I just can't stand it when anyone and everyone goes to ridiculous lengths to cheer for a team, generally from large markets. The Cubs are likeable enough, but this buzz reminds me too much of the love the Warriors and Seacucks receive; good for their large fanbases but annoying for the rest of us.

I agree in general about how media going in ham on a team can be annoying to the fans of other teams. But these Cubbies are absolutely nothing like Dray, Klay and Steph.

iirc Bryant had his historic 5-5(3 dingers 2 double) game on the road at the Reds. Since the stadium was pretty much packed with Cubs fans, he got an unmistakable curtain call invitation that he basically refused to even acknowledge. Now imagine someone like Steph or Dray in that situation. Hell even Harper would milked the shit out a moment like that.

Lackey is prolly the only Cub that I can't even stand. Especially when he stares down hitters after giving up homers or key hits. I don't understand how pitcher feel like they have the right to be upset at bat-flips and a hitter admiring his ball flight when all they gotta do is pitch better to not let it happen.
