Yeah, but now the Warriors are going to go 77-4 the rest of the way. The league is fucked.

Gave up a lot for KD, tbh
Awesome game. Just fucking awesome.
I'm not solid that he (Jonathan Simmons) can keep this level of play up, but damn it if I don't think Pop should ride him regardless.
He would be an all pro if he did. No-one can keep that up. Give us one of those in a 7 game series and I'd be happy.

Simmons made some of his old bad decisions late in the game before that final dunk. But he earned a pass because of his stellar play the rest of the game. If he continues to play this well, he will become our mini-Kwahi. :downspin:

I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't understand. I thought Dedmon looked like a totally different player tonight. That's all the Spurs need out of him. If that's what he's going to look like, I feel a lot better about the season.
Who is it that keeps bringing me down by talking about consistency?
He looked decent tonight, but there's no denying the initial comment: his hands are awful, he can't catch most passes to him or fumbles the ball even though most were clean passes

Obviously we have to temper expectations. Spurs probably aren't that good and obviously GS isn't a bad team.
However, as fans with no analysis that was fun as hell!

Was cool to see the team not back down at all. There were no moments where you felt they shrunk or even wanted to. Simmons dunk sort of punctuated that attitude. Same with all the hard fought rebounds from Manu, Lee, Kawhi, etc...

Yeah, this is the exact opposite of last season. We had such an exciting offseason, and such big expectations, and then got beaten by OKC in the opener. This year we're all negative, and they curb stomp GSW in the opener. It can't get much farther apart.

The lack of movement by the starters and the settling for jumpers looked just like the OKC game as well. Simmons and Mills deserve a shitload of credit for just changing the complexion of the game with their energy.

Spurs come away with a 29-point win over the Warriors. According to Elias, only one team has ever lost a season opener by 20 or more points and then bounced back to win the NBA title. That was the St. Louis Hawks who were blown out by Bill Russell's Celtics on opening night in 1957 before then beating the Celtics later that year in the NBA Finals.

I can't remember an exact play I'll have to watch the game again
Watch the play right before Simmons block on Curry, that's a pass most bigs should and can be able to catch (not a super clean pass, but a pass an average big will not struggle with). He just lamely puts 1 hand out there trying to catch the ball (not smart at all), fumbles it, and then doesn't hustle enough to just grab the ball which was near him. instead tries to box out Green from hustling for the ball which he fails at, it was pretty easy for him to go and catch that

He and Pau had difficulty together in spacing but once LMA realized they had nothing for him down low, he adjusted accordingly. He also made some tough jumpers. I'd say it was an outstanding game considering it was opening night. You can tell he'll be better this season and when Kawhi had some tough moments, he picked him up and vice versa. This can be a great situation for LMA if he doesn't let ego get in the way...and it won't.

Fair enough. I'll accept that you saw one that I didn't. I don't think that's the one where he slipped the pick and rolled to the basket. The pass on that one was at his shoelaces and he was lucky to get a hand on it at all.
He was brought in to be a defender, he didn't look stellar in the preseason, and he came in and was +29 with 8 rebounds and two blocks in 17 minutes against the team everyone's afraid of. I'll take his one made bucket as gravy. :)

He has been yelling at the refs since last season but they didn't put a respeck on his name until tonight.:lol
One thing that's ACTUALLY new was him getting up & clapping/shouting after Simmons posterized McGee. Dat Leadership: :wow

I am curious to any that watched it on TNT. (I saw it on ILP). What did Kenny, Ernie, Chuck and Shaq have to say about the result? Anyone get on the Spurs bandwagon? Declare Kawhi the greatest? Say anything foolish, funny or outrageous?

Just the usual: Chuck calling Kiwi the second most complete player in the NBA behind Lebron (though he said him and Klay were neck-and-neck), Shaq said it was the system, and Kenny talking about how the Spurs take scrap heap players like Green, Mills, and Simmons and turn them into good NBA players. They talked down the Dubs more than they praised the Spurs, though Shaq calling out McGee was pretty funny.

Garbage time dunks are not to cool but against cocky teams like GSW I'm sure Pop will let it slide. Anyone else notice KL has come out of his shell on interviews? I imagine he is a much more vocal team leader in the locker room than we would know. A fantastic start but lets not shit the place up by losing to the Kings.

From pre-game to halftime to post-game every time Kenny opened his mouth, he sounded more and more foolish, sticking to the mainstream apology for the Dubs and how it will take time to gel. "It was only one game. The Warriors aren't that bad, and the Spurs aren't that good... blah, blah, blah."
For my money, Kenny has become increasingly annoying through the years.

I don't think Kenny is wrong in the sense that the Warriors are safe from that game plan against most teams. The Heat were safe against most teams too. But no one cares about those teams, really. They will face more adversity than the Heat if they certain teams step up. OKC can still give them trouble due to Kanter and Adams.

No point in getting too high or low with just one game. In that sense Kenny has always been on that bandwagon, so it makes sense.
Warriors definitely are a work in progress. They set a big bar the last couple of seasons, and they've changed pretty drastically.

Our "fan" Skip talks about the game. Weird that Skip thinks a) Spurs aren't a big team (they are) and b) Pau played good D against Dubs. Meanwhile Shannon thinks LeBron is 1-1 against the Spurs in the Finals and no one corrects him. How do these "experts" have jobs?

It is and it isn't.
You don't lose at home by 29 and it not be a fluke. However, the Spurs exposed weakness in the Warriors. It will be interesting to see if they are able to hide/compensate for those weaknesses.
Most teams will not be able to expose them.

You're right. The issue will always be about what the Worriers did wrong not what the Spurs did right. But just like last season we exposed some weaknesses in those sorry Oakland asses. Worriers will still manage to win 60+ games but will be interesting how they perform against other teams' big and athletic frontcourts (OKC, BUCKS, MINNY, etc).

I think the Warriors were exposed in this game. No having Bogut and Ezelli trolling the paint is a big problem. Spurs can be contained with really big guys (see OKC), the Warriors just don't have that kind of personnel with the reboot.
Last year, Spurs could defend the GSW, but had trouble scoring too. This year with Leonard's new aggressiveness and a much smaller front line, the offense did not have as much problems. Also, the Spurs were looking to shoot the 3 (LaMarcus being set up to shoot the corner 3). They did not do that last year were it was mostly an isolation game.

You make it sound all reasonable. :lol I can understand some bandwagoning, because of last season and adding Durant. But Kenny Smith predicted a 77 win season. I don't care who they have on the team, you don't talk about winning 77 games like it's a given. And he's still trying to justify the comment, after that first game. I've always liked him, but that's just Stephan A. Smith level stupid.

It was nice to see a short stretch of small ball with Kawhi at the 4. At the end of the first half there was a lineup of Patty-Manu-Simmons-Kawhi-LMA that went on a 9-0 run in about 2 minutes of play.

I hope we can see some more of that going forward when matched up with quicker and stretchier teams.

Most impressive, unexpected and enjoyable Spurs performance since the '14 Finals. The confidence they played with was shocking and if indeed Leonard (getting to the line and play making) and Simmons (playing with controlled aggression and volume three-point shooting) have made significant strides, then that would completely transform this team.
Parker looked somewhat uncomfortable playing primarily off the ball because it's foreign, but he's a more intelligent player and better spot up shooter than he's given credit for and will adjust. Plus, he may not be much of a primary creator anymore, but as a secondary one, he'll dust defenses in rotation and so will Ginobili.
Predictably, the media, who roasted the Spurs after their first meeting last season, was quick to rush to the Warriors defense, but no one (at least not teams they've been "up" for) has made them look like that in the previous 2 seasons.

Pretty accurate way of describing Parker's new role. If this is the role that he's going to have moving forward, he's going to somke some unsuspecting defenses.
That drive on Curry in the third is going to be huge...If the starters can play with Leonard as the main handler and tony can attack defenses in short burst...hes going to beat 90% of defenses.
