Andrew Bogut isn't going to do shit for Cleveland. He would have been nice insurance for the Spurs but this team is set with its roster for the most part. It would be great if the Spurs could pick up another veteran PG who can penetrate.

Barnes going to Warriors means Durant is done. There isn't much on the market but Calderon would be helpful over Forbes. We probably need a reliable PG because we know pop wont trust Murray for spot minutes due to injuries or foul issues from Parker/Mills.

I couldn't resist. Actually, Calderon would be a much better use of a roster spot than Forbes. People here under-rate him, but he's been a very good assist man throughout his career, and a damned good 3P shooter. He's having a down year on the Lakers, but it's the Lakers. Last year he was a 30 minute per night player. His numbers weren't as good as early in his career but, again, it was the freaking Knicks.

Honestly, I'm a little surprised if the Spurs haven't been kicking the tires. A true PG who can knock down 3's? I can't think of anything that would be more of a fit for this team, other than landing some superstar - and that's not going to happen.

Calderon has little to zero value in the short term and long term. Sure he'd be insurance in short term , but that insurance has very little value considering how deep Spurs are at the point guard. ( Parker, Mills, Murray)

And the Spurs released Nico bc they wanted to develop Dijon and he earned it.

It doesn't accomplish much for the Spurs long term to keep signing TOSB to take what little playing time they can afford to give to their young players this season. They did that last season with Kevin Martin and Andre Miller, and those guys weren't a factor in the postseason.

If they sign Calderon now he will need repetitions with the team etc. All they will accomplish with that is to get what little playing time they could afford to give Dijon this season to evaporate.

Consider all the time Pop spent last season trying to get a TOSB acclimated like Kevin Martin and he never, ever made the rotation. In fact they started losing games once he joined, he ended up the worst player in the team... with the distinction of having the only negative +/- in that historically great regular season team. He didn't really contribute anything... to the point that just keeping RAsual Butler would have been better. Then on top of that suck salad, he added the bacon bits of taking playing time from both Anderson and Simmons who did play in the playoffs and could have used that time to get better themselves as they were both essentially rookies (Kyle wasn't but heck, he didn't play much at all his first season, nor was he relied on for anything). It's a lesson for Pop IMO.

Looking at their cap situation next season, they have to play the long game. Blocking youngsters from playing time this season who are already not in the rotation anyways to the point they wouldn't play at all doesn't accomplish anything, except basically delay their development bc Pop will need them anyways. And I agree with you too. Forbes is here for the long game, next season basically.

Doesn't he play with Pau in the national team?

The choice really is between Calderon and Anthony. Calderon basically is a more experienced version of Nico. Likely can't guard anyone, but has been in the league long enough to have tricks up his sleeve.

The question though who to get is someone who can take us over the hump of GSW or the Cavs. I think we need a defensive wing... barnes is gone so who else is out there?

If you want to look at the Chinese league (http://basketball.realgm.com/international/league/40/Chinese-CBA/stats) Malcolm Thomas and Jamaal Franklin are probably the most interesting guys. Thomas leads the league in rebounding and has hit 37% of his threes, decent volume too. Franklin almost averages a triple double but also has a sky high turnover number (8.8 asts and 4.9 tos per game) so it's a bit difficult to tell how good a playmaker he really is. You also have to consider that the CBA is notorious for the lack of defense being played so the stats are all grossly inflated. There's no other league where Jimmer could average 8 rebs per game..

You never know where you'll find talent. Keeping that perspective helped the Spurs get Manu back in the day when Euro ball was deemed beneath the NBA. I don't see Jimmer coming back to the NBA full time, but he's a borderline NBA talent and a cut above what you would call the scrubs from the US that play in China. I could see him getting a look or two from an NBA team for the rest he of the season, but we all believe he can't be a contributor on a good team on an NBA level.

I don't know, but last night's game has me rethinking the idea of signing Jose Calderon, Dijon is ok but he is young and we might need another option at PG, cut Anthony now that Pau is back and our 4 bigs are all contributing (LMA, Pau, DD, and DLee) or Forbes because he simply hasn't flashed anything that says 'we have to keep him, he just needs more time'.

Serious question - not just arguing for the sake of it. Do you really think Murray will play anything more than spot playoff minutes this season. Barring a major injury to Parker or Mills, I mean? I suppose he could go on a growth spurt in the last 23 games, but the way he is right now?

I'm not in love with Calderon, and he's on the downside of his career. But he's a guy who has had a 50-40-90 season, and has a career AST/TO ratio of something like 4. We all know that there are nights when Patty just can't move the offense, and can't hit a shot to save his ass. The Spurs have had older veteran PG's in the past who have come into playoff games in those exact situations, and made all the difference.

Bottom line, I really do think Calderon has the ability and experience to be of value in these playoffs. If the Spurs really do sense blood in the water from the other top teams, then he seems like a better use of the roster spot than Forbes. And as for Forbes, I don't think he'd be going anywhere. With all the players available, I doubt that other teams are going to be beating down his door. Even if he's got a place here in the future, the Spurs could have both, IMO.

If only this latest "cut" would light a fire under Sullinger and inspire him to live up to his potential...

Jack's injury was pretty serious, and he has been on the shelf for a long time. I wouldn't mind Casspi to augment the weak wing rotation... Neal is familiar with the Spurs' culture and several of the current players. He might provide the outside scoring threat that D-league and Patty have failed to provide...

This season is turning crazy, didn't realize Tyler Hansbrough was available. Is he really that bad? Why isn't he on a roster?

Hansbrough was never good for anything except energy. Frankly, I am surprised his career in the NBA lasted as long as it did.

With Kawhi and Aldridge out indefinitely, we gotta cut the worthless pieces of shit that Joel Anthony and Bryn Forbes are and fill those roster spots with useful players.....

The leftovers:
C: JJ Hickson, Chris Kaman, Andrea Bargnani, Kendrick Perkins

PF: Jared Sullinger, Josh Smith, Amar'e Stoudamire, Carl Landry, Jason Thompson, Luis Scola, Chris Copeland, Tyler Hansbrough, Anthony Bennett

SF: Omri Casspi, Alonzo Gee, RJ Hunter, Dahntay Jones, Rasual Butler

SG: Jarrett Jack, Gary Neal, Marcus Thornton, Jordan McRae, Jimmer Fredette

PG: Grievis Vasquez, Mario Chalmers, Tony Wroten, Phil Pressey, Kirk Hinrich

Great summary of available players.
I agree with you that we will need more playable bodies for this run given the circumstances.
There is not much you can get there, Bargnani is under contract in Spain and i am not sure of he has an nba out clause, i don't like the Scola fit and Josh Smith who is not that old seemed pretty done last year and is now in China.
I do agree that maybe Casspi and Neal are the best we can get.
Chris Kaman choose to be out to start the season but is eligible too. I don't know how he is basketball wise but he took the season off because of a family loss. Not an injury. So that may be an option to explore.

Is Jack healthy? I heard he was signed then injured. He isn't a Spur though. If Gary is healthy I would love it. He is what I wanted Forbes to be. Alonzo Gee is an athletic SF. Kamen is also also mature smart choice. So I agree dump Forbes and Anthony and get 2 of this 3

Would love if we picked up Sullinger and Jack tbh..

Chinook (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=37557) would they be playoff eligible even if they played this season with previous teams?

Yes.

How in the f#$% has he healed so quickly? I'd be very interested in getting him. Why aren't the Spurs onto this already? I thought there was a story where RC told him years ago that he'd be a Spur someday.

Is it lack of defense that is keeping the Spurs away? If it's not a defense thing, why haven't they gotten onto it already if he's healed this quickly?

Spurs have coveted Casspi for a while, but I could see him going to Clippers where they need a small forward like him as a starter.

I thought Casspi was more of a 3, but reading on the Internet, teams apparently look at him as a stretch 4. Does he add anything that Bertans doesn't already provide?

The Grizz will be desperate in chasing him, they started a dinosaur at the SF spot last game (though that dinosaur did play very well).

We just missed out on Jordan Crawford, who's playing well for the Pelicans.

The only player worth looking at is Quinn Cook who's averaging 26.1/4/6.7

What about Anthony Brown - good-sized SG from Stanford, Lakers' #2 pick last year.

hey I am with that. He would get minutes in the playoffs, Forbes will get 0. If we cut Forbes no one will race out to grab him so we can just get him back again next year, I doubt this will be a JayMychal Green situation (we should have kept him).

Ridiculous how they are staying pat on that guard rotation..Parker is walking with a cane in front of their eyes and yet apparently Bryn fuckin Forbes getting minutes is their answer in the eventuality he can't suit up..

Dude has missed close to 20 games now: what makes them confident he won't in the playoffs with these non-stop nags?

Particularly in the playoffs - understood. If the press didn't go spineless in postgame interviews somebody would have asked Poop about Bertans' DNP tonight, when most of his shooters couldn't buy a basket.

Pop benched him as soon as he saw Gasol unhappy with him, then gave him a 2 minute lecture on the bench. They weren't talking about NASA. I can guarantee you that

So, even though the TEAM could have clearly used him tonight, Pop is still teaching him the object lesson?! Smh!

Or maybe it was a move to show Pau that he is the BOSS of the second unit so that he will embrace being a bench player...

its all about the playing time. Wolves lost Bjelica for the rest of the season plus Lavine. They have a lot of minutes available for a wing/combo forward.... Casspi is in a contract year and spent a lot of time benched in Sacramento...
