Not that hard a throw to worry about misthrowing it.

It is when you have the runner that close, especially for the third baseman. Also need to consider the situation. Would rather have the out at first with runners on 2nd/3rd than the bases loaded with no outs.

There's nothing fundamental about throwing to third on a bunt, especially with the game in the balance at that point and the runner at second coming in hot. A lot of things can go wrong. The fundamental play is to get the out at first.

Strangest playoff game I've ever watched. Even stranger than last season's 13-12 game 5. I've never seen offenses look this bad. And the pitching aside from Buehler hasn't necessarily been dominant. Porcello left a lot of meatballs. As have the Dodgers relievers.

Fundamental play. There's some risk in general; but in this case the risk/reward made all the sense in the world to go to third.

The risk is if you mess up the game is essentially over, while the reward is an out. You throw to first you get the out unless someone shits their pants. In late game situations with runners on first and second getting an out is top priority; they even coach kids in this situation that the third baseman's responsibility is to play off the bag to ensure if the ball gets past the pitcher they're ready to field it and get the out at first. The pitcher fielding it to the third baseman who is unaccustomed to making bang-bang plays like a first baseman is generally too risky; in this situation it wasn't as risky since Machado is an elite defensive third baseman (or was, haven't watched much of him lately).

10-27-2018, 02:27 AM
Why don't the Sox go with Sale at this point?

Since they have games both tomorrow and Sunday. You need him to go a solid 6/7 innings when he goes in order to win, whether that's tomorrow or Sunday with the bullpen being depleted tonight. Whoever takes this game is winning the series.

midnightpulp
10-27-2018, 04:27 AM
It's also gonna be funny to hear (I won't listen, though) shallow jackasses like Cowherd, and the rest of the talking heads on those hot take shows say this game is why baseball needs a tie breaker if the game is tied after the 12th inning or something. This game was amazing. Was it tedious at times? Sure. But it wasn't contrived, and why baseball remains the most dramatically dynamic sport there is. Never know if you're gonna get a 10-9 slugfest that ends in the 9th or a 3-2 18 inning game. Now I wouldn't ask for many more games like this, but it's cool it happened.

It would've been all over the way he was pitching anyways. He wasn't recovering from 2nd and 3rd and an out the way he was pitching. That was a momentum changing play; the risk is nothing when you realize it's the difference between a W and an L. I knew he was going to third the second it was bunted.

Nice of Freese to get a run back. All I ask is for Kershaw to hold for 6 innings. Roberts has officially lost his mind batting Hernandez 3rd. Killed that inning where Price was choking.

Build like the Astros and Sox. Abandon the retarded three true outcome approach that is becoming antiquated and develop players into all around hitters. The Astros took their biggest step from 2016 to 2017 when they went from a top 4 team in Ks to last in Ks. Dodgers still operate until the old sabermetrics idea that a strikeout is just another out and that OPS is the be all end all.

And as a fan of baseball, I'm glad teams like the Royals, Astros, and Sox are exposing NL teams (and teams in the AL like the Yankees) based around the all or nothing "Joey Gallo ball" approach. Even the 2016 Cubs didn't egregiously strikeout. Bryant kind of inflated their overall K percentage, but the rest of the team all had under 130 regular season Ks.

To be fair, their high price pitchers almost blew it multiple times over the course of their run (Price was really the only player to live up, which no one could see coming). Their home grown guys and veteran retreads came through with big hits, big defensive plays, and big pitching performances in huge spots.
