View Full Version : Should the Spurs lowball/ask Kawhi for a discount to retool the roster, tbh?

Kawhi said he wants to be a Spur for life, giving him the supermax will just not really give the team the flexibility they need to build around him and Patty, tbh...

Should they ask Kawhi to take a small discount, and trust the system? This is, after all, the best run organization in sports...

Maybe?

After Patty's contract you'd have some nerve asking a star player to take a discount.

They'll lowball him. PATFO has to pay for those Mills and Gasol contracts somehow.

Pretty hard to lowball someone who is unwilling to play, simply because he has an "ouch."

You don't even have to worry about lowballing him since Kawhi is going to be a Laker. He rather play in LA for the Max vs playing in San Antonio for the Super Max.

If he looks healthy, you offer supermax and tell them if you're willing to give up more money, here is who we can sign. It should be a pretty simple convo. Make it his choice. The caveat to me is that he needs to look healthy at the end of the season. It's not worth the risk for the supermax if he can't look healthy after 10 months of no activity on this chronic injury.

Nope. They ruined the team with the Patty and Gasol contracts. There's no point in a rebuild unless we can dump one of them. We're not a team that's gonna compete any time soon Just give the fans at least one star player in Kawhi.

Kawhi is too selfish. He won’t even play for the team now.

No. He's either going to get paid or he's gone. Can't lowball superstars. First thing his agent would tell Pop is to deal out some players like everyone else.

Bait thread, but I see many people are taking it serious :lol

He's earning 18M this year, the best contract in the league, and THIS is what the Spurms surrounded him with :lmao

Retool the roster without him. Because that's how you do it. Ask him to take less to retool.

That or pray others take a pay cut to play alongside him. Yeah, sounded crazy to me too

Yes the rebuild around Patty will likely require he give up around 50 mills. :lol

What sucks is you're probably right tbh.

For the health of the franchise, it is better that they do not...

makes no sense to lowball him...but makes sense to give him the choice between supermax and a different most team friendly contract.
So he can decide what kind of future he prefers...
In any case I don't think his decisions will change that much if not for the choice of the f.o. to exceed or not the luxury tax with the new contracts for players already under contract or with the mle contacts for free agents....bacause in any case, if he sign the supermax or any other big contract with us, its clear to me we're gonna operate under the hard cap rules...

I would hate Kawhi on a supermax deal, but unfortunately they have no room.

Unless Mills/Gasol get shipped this summer, they would be foolish to start the negotiations with Kawhi on that footing.

Wait what?? Lowball Kawhi after the ridiculous Gasol and Mills contracts? I'd be offended if I were him and the front office hit me up with that... Kawhi achieved more in one year than the both of them did in all their seasons here... Kawhi is getting the supermax
