View Full Version : Mrs Popovich passed away today

The news of Erin Popovich's death stunned Green, who said he had seen signs that she was getting stronger.
"It's really hard to believe," Green said. "This summer, she was just able to travel and I was so happy for him and her to be able to get away."

"respiratory illness" COPD? IPF?
I lost of friend of 40 years to quasi-IPF, more likely his Marine squad's jet engine cleaning fluid was the culprit, as others in his squad also had lung diseases.
Another friend was COPD from smoking.
Either one, those are slow, horrible deaths
Condolences to Pop and family.

Damn, such sad news..... RIP Mrs. Popovich. There is no way Pop will be coaching tonight, he has said time and time again how there are more important things in life and that this is just a game.

Maybe, but maybe being around the family is more conforming, I mean the NBA family. It's a home game too. Id bet he plans to coach

I'm guessing he'll do what his kids want him to do and what his wife would have wanted or told him to do. I actually can't imagine him being there but it wouldn't surprise me given the potential prodding from his wife to keep coaching. Who knows? My guess is that I wouldn't be there, but you can't know unless you could walk someone else's path.
I wonder if the strains of this year for her husband combined with her own medical fight just finally got to be too much for her to sustain...

Terrible news tbh. With my dad going through something similar, definitely feel for Pop and totally understand him not giving much of a shit these last 3 seasons...makes perfect sense.
RIP Erin. What a terrible season.

I don’t give two shits about what people on this forum think about me despite the fact I’ve been here for a long time. This hurts. Pop has been a figure, controversial or not, in many of our lives. It’s truly sad. To anyone who’s lost someone close or unexpectedly these things are really difficult (I lost my dad / best frend to cancer). It’s brutal. And I have as much empathy for someone I’ve never met as I’ve ever had.
Sorry to hear that, Deep. My dad is going through something similar. It's a terrible disease.
It is just a game. But it’s not fair to the guys going balls out on the court trying hard to win and fight for their livelihoods while their head coach doesn’t really care if they win or lose because the coach has some grand outlook on life.
Not saying Pop is wrong in the big picture, but at one time he didn’t have the big picture when he was young and hungry too.
you never know who you meet during the course of a day that has a love one at home that is terminally ill or some other catastrophic scenario. they don't all check out because of it. in fact, they endure in spite of it. none of us have the right to question pop on how he handled this, either professionally or personally.

RIP Erin. May she rest peacefully in God's hands after the sufferings. Deepest condolences to the Popovich family. Can't describe how exactly I'm feeling but wish they get over the grievances with time...

Pop's carefully constructed circle to ward off the smallest shred of self-importance begins with his wife, Erin. The daughter of the late Air Force Academy athletic trainer Jim Conboy, she's the one who last summer convinced Pop to cut out his sideline tantrums over errant calls. "She'd point out other coaches who screamed and yelled and say, 'Do you want to look like that?'" Pop says. An added dividend: His team now argues with officials less often too. And he knows when he comes home from a game that she'll give him her succinct take-"You lost your momentum in the third quarter"-offer him a turkey sandwich and chips, then turn his attention to family matters.

I give him props for shitting all over Dolan. His tweet just solidifies his standing with me. He also had one of the great quotes on the NBA playoffs:

the thing is, as much as people here love to crap on pop, he's an incredibly well respected figure in the community... the other day HH37 was talking about how nobody in the business outright criticizes him. it's because he's earned such a respect among his peers not only for his basketball acumen, but he's always been one of the more personable coaches in the league.
the way he visited duncan in st croix and spent time with him, etc. the way how despite all his success in basketball, he routinely tells people that there are more important things in life than basketball...
you see the great relationship he has with coaches around the league, whether or not they've been on his staff. you see opposing players go out of their way to greet him before and after games.
so even though erin was never in the spotlight, people around the league are hurting right now

Oakley just became my favorite Knick. Always liked Oakley but kind of surprised with such a sweet and gracious statement. Seems like Pop has everyone's respect among the league, and that's nice to see. Don't know what to expect from tonight's game, it's going to be surreal for the players and fans alike.

This series was on its way to be over quickly but with the team this emotionally affected I don’t think their hearts will be in it tonight. I expect them to be distracted and for this game to not go well anyways. “Players are human too”

RIP...rooting for him rest of the series
The only compaboe death I can think, in scope of reach and coverage, of is Monty Williams wife. Can't think of any recent coach who lost a spouse. Craig Sager also pretty close in coverage.
I wonder if this was sudden. I know she was dealing with this for years but I don't think Mrs. Pop was necessarily on her deathbed. Can't imagine Pop would've taken the trip to GS if he knew he only had her for a couple more days. I'm so sad for him. :(

Green, Manu, & Kerr have all commented how they were shocked, so it does seem (at least from the outside looking in) that it was sudden. Kerr said it was shocking & unexpected

Also puts things in perspective, of course..I've been very vocal about Pop's lack of care for basketball the past few years, but if it's true that his wife has been battling cancer all that time, it makes all the sense in the world to give less fucks about a meaningless game..

It was a rumor about Pop's wife. Nothing scandalous, just sad. I didn't believe the rumor I heard, so I searched this thread to see if anyone had commented similarly to what I heard but found nothing.
Again, nothing scandalous, so maybe "wow" was the wrong word choice, but that was my reaction at the time.
