At 70, if Pop takes some time off, he isn't coming back to coach anymore. He'll probably be with his family and call it a day doing whatever he wants in life.

Warriors forward Kevin Durant (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/3202/kevin-durant) learned of Erin Popovich's death shortly after the Spurs released their statement.

"I just want Pop to know that the whole NBA family is supporting him and got his back through it all," Durant said. "It's bigger than the game. It's bigger than winning and losing. It's about the brotherhood we built as NBA players and everybody in the NBA family. I feel so bad for Pop and his family. That's just tough to hear about."

It is just a game. But it’s not fair to the guys going balls out on the court trying hard to win and fight for their livelihoods while their head coach doesn’t really care if they win or lose because the coach has some grand outlook on life.

Not saying Pop is wrong in the big picture, but at one time he didn’t have the big picture when he was young and hungry too.

I guarantee most players feel the same way. They too have families and other things going on. And while no one enjoys losing, and some it hits more than others, they still have lives once the game is done. It's like that with anything in life.

Saddened by this news for Pop. Would be saddened for anyone to lose their partner in life. Truly feel for him. I've been married for 23 years and would be absolutely devastated if I lost the best part of me.

Totally disgusted by some comments by people on this board. Really classless and a lack of respect.

Also, TNT showed a total lack of professionalism by putting Lebron on the spot like that. However, he handled with sincerity, compassion, and respect.

- Spurs sign Patty Mills and Pau Gasol to bloated long-term contracts
- Peter Holt and his wife get divorced
- Kawhi misses almost the whole year and his relationship with the team seriously deteriorates
- Spurs win 47 games, snapping their streak of consecutive 50-win seasons
- Pop's wife dies
- Spurs about to lose in the 1st round

They had a beef going on during the 2008 playoffs. That's when Pop went to an aggressive Hack-a-Shaq strategy. I do remember in game 2 of that series Shaq started cursing out Pop during the game after getting fouled. I'm guessing Shaq's story must have happened during that series.

Sorry to hear that, man.

Absolutely, cancer sucks. Many of us have been there, in Pop's shoes in some way. This hits home hard. I've criticized Pop a lot, called him out. Honestly what the fuck do I know though about coaching on a professional level. I'm willing to bet the majority of us are armchair GMs/coaches and have nowhere near the expertise of a battle-hardened Yoda like Pop.

To think that he coached throughout the past three years with this hanging over his head while his wife received rounds of chemo/radiation treatment, probably suffering debilitating side-effects of it, is something that is admirable on it's own level. If oncologists told Erin and Pop of a prognosis leading to an anticipated unfavorable time-range coinciding with the recent weeks/days, I cannot imagine how rough it has been these last few weeks...knowing the inevitable to come.

You probably won't read this Pop, but thank you for coaching and leading this team. :tu

It could explain why he was drunk the other night on TMZ. Woj reported she was ill for a period of time.

Didn't someone here this season mention that they/we never sees Pop's wife? And also, I think that person thought due to the way Pop's not given a shit about coaching as much the past couple of years, he was wondering if there was something wrong with Pop's wife, if she had been sick. If she's been sick for a long time, then like that poster said, that might explain why Pop doesn't care about Basketball that much anymore.

I'm very sorry to hear this. As much as I've bagged Pop the past couple of years, I'm so sorry to hear this Pop.

Source on reddit claims she had cancer for the past 3 years ... fwiw

If this is correct, the person who wondered if Pop's wife was sick and speculated that Pop's change in coaching and outlook on life the past couple of years might be due to that, seems like he/she may have been correct. That sucks, as I never really took it seriously or thought something like that could be a reason for it. I should have given credence to that possibility.

Edit: I was also on page 1 when I first made this first post. Why are some of you guys joking around about this?

damn, my heart actually hurts at this news.
everything about this season - the frustration, the anger, the harsh words, the hostility, the disappointment - everything just vanished like that. i'm sorry for all the shit i gave pop, for all the mockery of his 'just a game' attitude and the petty sniping over his coaching decisions. all of that was just family squabbling - even the trashiest posters on the forum are behind you right now.

a little perspective goes a long way.

pop, i never met you and probably never will, but you've been a familiar and comforting figure in my life for as long as i've known the NBA. i can only imagine the pain and grief you're feeling right now, and my heart goes out to you, my prayers go out to you and your family. god above has love for each and every one of us, and i firmly believe we will all meet again someday on the far side of the vale.

40 years of marriage, companionship, memories, comfort, love, devotion, and support. celebrate the miracle and joy of having met and known and loved her, and mourn her loss, no matter how timely. i can imagine that in her illness, to be taken and brought into god's embrace was a blessing, and i know for a fact she looks down upon you, watching and waiting for the day when you two will be together again.

i have no more words, this hit me so much harder than i could have ever imagined.

but can you imagine if Kawhi announced he would be coming back and suiting up for game 3 out of respect for Pop. Yes he’s been as ass for leaving, but if he truly did it for Pop, the emotional lift it would give Pop, the Spurs, the whole damn city, and would maybe help mend fences. :cry

He wouldn’t even have to play good. It would just be for support and spiritual lift.

I'm not being sarcastic here. I honestly would be happy if Kawhi was just on the bench for the game and the cameras caught him giving Pop a big hug of support.

But don't want to derail a thread about Erin into yet another Kawhi thread.

Cancer sucks. Lost my sister to it last year. I really like what Kenny said in the TNT clip. Pop is about the best thing that has ever happened to SA that I can remember; a real straight up guy, patriot who has paid his dues and the best coach ever. Prayers to his family.

it's weird for me to imagine him coaching tomorrow... but it's actually weirder for me to imagine him not coaching.

he's military/still have a job to do kinda guy...

Joking about someone's spouse passing away is really low. Show some respect.

Not surprised by some of the pieces of shit that roam these forums.

Anyway, my condolences to Pop, his daughters, grandchildren and family/friends.

Death sucks in general but especially when it is a loved one.

If it was cancer then I understand the toll and heartbreak it can cause. My father's brother died a few years ago of intestinal cancer and it devastated my dad.

Damn......

Awful news. So sad. For all of us diehard fans, Pop is a big part of our lives. Very sorry for his loss.

damn, my heart actually hurts at this news.
everything about this season - the frustration, the anger, the harsh words, the hostility, the disappointment - everything just vanished like that. i'm sorry for all the shit i gave pop, for all the mockery of his 'just a game' attitude and the petty sniping over his coaching decisions. all of that was just family squabbling - even the trashiest posters on the forum are behind you right now.

a little perspective goes a long way.

pop, i never met you and probably never will, but you've been a familiar and comforting figure in my life for as long as i've known the NBA. i can only imagine the pain and grief you're feeling right now, and my heart goes out to you, my prayers go out to you and your family. god above has love for each and every one of us, and i firmly believe we will all meet again someday on the far side of the vale.

Very well said

I really hate this for pop. I cant imagine his pain.

I lost my brother recently. It has been tough. The hardest thing has been watching his widow and son pick up the pieces and try and keep moving forward. It breaks your heart to see it play out.

Prayers to pop and his family.

Those with jokes need to have a coke and a smile and stfu.

A fan's mind is very complex. As fans we unconditionally love a team, players, coaches for many years...More years than our own relationships.

We want them to stay healthy, happy...We really worry about their injures, illnesses, fam...We're sad when they're sad.

Love, loyalty, empathy...IDK. I'm just sad tonight.

It just reminds us that life in general is bigger/more important than sports.

It also explains Pop's laissez-faire attitude the last few seasons.

Hopefully this loss can bring the city, fan base and team together more than "ever."

*Sorry to sound so cliché, but that is the best way I could put it.

Just watched the LeBron interview after the Cavs/Pacers games the reporter put him on the spot like that. I did notice it really effected him he either has a huge heart or he has his sights set on joining Spurs next season and knows this could make Pop consider retirement.

Some of the posts here are uncalled for. Also, this could explain Pop's demeanor this season. Condolences to Pop.

Condolences to the Popovich family on their loss. The tv sideline reporter asked LeBron
Before the interview if he wanted to comment on it. She didn’t blindside him!

Tough tough shit to deal with. RIP Erin. All my thoughts to Pop, the best coach and one of the best human beings out there.

Spurt don't be a prick.
Sorry. The point I was making is Pop didn’t use this unimaginable tragedy as an excuse to lose or try less. Some posters on this board to Colin Cowherd have been taking shots at Pop to end the season and throughout these playoffs and he didn’t utter a word of this. It’s disheartening to see him have one of the most difficult seasons of his career alongside such personal grief. This circumstance, Erin’s cancer, was slow and has been in the background this entire season and there is nothing wrong with acknowledging that reality now.

Pop will always be number one on my all time coaching list. I believed before this news that Pop coached one of the best seasons of his career and this news solidifies that position to me. My heart does go out to him and his family. I doubt I’m the only one hoping this plus Kawhi doesn’t push Pop into retirement. I don’t know how Pop dealt with it all to this point.

I lost my dad 7 years ago and my mother-in-law last year, both to cancer. Losing a family member is never good, but cancer is a horrible disease and such a terrible way to die. RIP Erin Popovich.
