"France, in particular, stands to lose significant business dealings with Iran as a result of the reinstated sanctions.
Losing deals to provide 100 new Airbus airliners, and
opening a $5bn oil exploration project
with Iran means real world economic consequences for a close ally of the United States."

Russian companies to reap benefits after US withdrawal from Iran nuclear agreement
Moscow remains less exposed to the economic consequences of US sanctions than Europe and its companies could even benefit from the move.
“The deal and the lifting of sanctions in 2015 marked the return of European business to Iran. But it’s unlikely they can keep doing business today, giving room to Russia,”
“Russia can now go ahead at full speed,”
Russia and Iran once had difficult relations, but have seen ties improve since the end of the Cold War.
While Tehran was shunned by the international community in the 1990s, Moscow agreed to resume the construction of the Bushehr Iranian nuclear plant that Germany had abandoned.
Russia and Iran sought to strengthen their business ties long before the 2015 agreement, despite international sanctions in place.
“European companies are more exposed to the US market, they must comply not to get into trouble. The Russians are less (exposed) and have less to lose,”
Russian companies continued to work in Iran “without any fuss” even when the sanctions were in place.
“They are used to working within legal and economic constraints. The US has systematically forced Iran to turn more towards Russia and China.”
On a visit to Tehran on Thursday, Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said the two countries intended to continue “all round economic cooperation.”
“We are not scared of sanctions,”
“Russia wants to sell steel, transport infrastructure and other manufactured goods to Iran. The less competition from the US and the EU, the better,”
Russia had a “real role to play” in Iran’s energy and electricity sectors.
Another positive sign for the Russian economy is the rise in oil prices, which rose to their highest level since 2014 after the US withdrawal from the Iran deal.
For the Russian state, whose finances remain highly dependent on natural resources, this is a significant source of income

Removing sanctions is mainly paid for by ordinary Iranians, undermines the secular government that negotiated with us, and reinforces the hardliners' insistence that the US can't be trusted in negotiations.
Iran was in compliance with the deal; this result gives them an incentive to restart enrichment.

After the Iran deal: A foreign policy built on arrogance, ignorance and sheer desperation
American foreign policy has long trended toward dark places. Under this administration, that has accelerated
https://media.salon.com/2018/05/trump-desert-island-620x412.jpg
“This moment will be seen by historians as a key marker in U.S. decline as a world power,” the former British diplomat wrote the day after the White House announcement.
after the Senate hearings Wednesday on Gina Haspel’s nomination as director of the CIA: “I think this might lead to some careful re-evaluation as to how one continues to think of the dear old US of A.”
The complacency of American life begins to assume a pitiful triviality — providing one is sentient, has a conscience and is not paid to think in conformity with orthodoxy. America has long headed for trouble, of course. Last week it took a very steep step further down into it. It is getting too dark to see a way out of this.
America grows ever more indifferent to alliances other than those dependent on a common adversary. Friendships with other nations seem no longer to matter, or even whether America is admired or respected.
All signs indicate we now enter that
late-imperial phase when power alone, raw power, is all we have to show the world.
In love, politics, diplomacy, war and much else, a lot of destruction is wreaked when the desperate are defending themselves at a late stage in their time.
Brace yourselves.
The worst is yet to come. It is not just the spectacle of a gaggle of cops yanking a 79-year-old with a dislocated shoulder into handcuffs.
It is that Uncle Ray was all alone.
Where is everybody?
The cops kept shouting at McGovern, “Stop resisting! Stop resisting!”
What a line. Most of us got that done a long time ago.

It’s not just Trump. The US has always broken its treaties, pacts and promises
the US is an unreliable international partner—
and it has long been one,
even before the current administration pulled out from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and
the Paris agreement on climate change, and
threatened to end NAFTA.
History is dotted with treaties that the
US has signed but not ratified,
signed and then unsigned, and
even refused to sign after pushing everyone else to sign.

U.S. OIL INDUSTRY STRUGGLES TO FILL VOID LEFT BY IRAN SANCTIONS
logistical constraints, in particular insufficient pipeline capacity at the heart of the U.S. shale boom in West Texas, are
limiting how quickly American companies will be able to replace any lost Iranian crude exports taken off the global oil market.
The difficulties being experienced in shale country help explain why the
U.S. has talked to large oil producers abroad about ways to increase supply and offset any impact from its exit from the Iran nuclear deal.
The talks were revealed by Steven Mnuchin, treasury secretary, hours after Trump’s announcement on Tuesday.
Oil produced in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico, the white-hot center of the shale boom (https://www.ozy.com/fast-forward/move-over-fracking-theres-a-new-technology-in-town/71701), is
becoming trapped with no easy route to a refinery or an export terminal.
The hectic pace of drilling and the productivity gains have boosted output from the Permian Basin by 60 percent in the past two years, to 3.2 million barrels a day.
The problem is that the pace of the boom is straining the ability of the region to keep up, with workers, with equipment and with pipelines.
“There is a huge capacity issue,” says John Zanner of RBN Energy, a research firm. “For all intents and purposes, pipelines are full.”

EU vows to block blow of US Iran sanctions
he EU said Thursday it will begin moves to block the effect of US sanctions on Iran as efforts to preserve the nuclear deal with Tehran deepened a transatlantic rift.
The decision came as Russia and China took some of their most concrete moves yet to extend their economic influence in Iran, in the face of renewed US efforts to choke off Tehran.
...
- 'Reinforce China' -
Meanwhile, Iran's oil minister said that Chinese state-owned oil company CNPC was ready to replace Total on a major gas field project in Iran.
Beijing also signalled that it intends to continue "normal and transparent practical cooperation with Iran".
The US says its sanctions apply to any transactions that are conducted in dollars, which are used in most international transactions, in particular in trading of crude oil.
But China has for years been working to increase trade using its currency and in March a yuan-denominated oil contract was launched in Shanghai.
Trump's withdrawal from the deal is now likely to boost China's influence in the region, a European diplomatic source warned.
"The Iran issue will probably reinforce China in the region, because the European businesses that can't take on the cost of difficulties on their American markets will leave an important gap for a power that seems to have no problem with taking their place," the source said.

Pompeo vows 'strongest sanctions in history' on Iran
http://thehill.com/sites/default/files/styles/thumb_small_article/public/pompeomikesolemn_051918getty.jpg?itok=QRiZ1ud5
vowed Monday to levy an “unprecedented” level of sanctions on Iran
in his fist major foreign policy address since becoming chief diplomat, Pompeo laid out 12 pillars the U.S. would demand from Iran for a new deal, even as he said a new agreement is “not the objective” of the Trump administration.
“We will apply unprecedented financial pressure on the Iranian regime,”
“The sting of sanctions will be painful if the regime does not change course from the unacceptable and unproductive path it has chosen to one that rejoins the league of nations.
These will indeed end up being the strongest sanctions in history when we are complete.”
Pompeo acknowledged the concerns European allies
“Any time sanctions are put in place, countries have to give up economic activity,” he said.
“Everyone’s going to have to participate in this.
Every country’s going to have to understand that we cannot continue to create wealth for [Quds Force Commander] Qasem Soleimani.”

Another Kock Bros Kock sucker from Kansas
How Pompeo’s “Severest Sanctions” on Iran Will Backfire
Pompeo,
a Kansas oil man backed by the Koch brothers,
knows little about the world and is among the worst prepared secretaries of state in American history.
Pompeo, a Kansas oil man backed by the Koch brothers, is just a former congressman and
a virulent Christian fundamentalist
with white nationalist tendencies.
He knows little about the world and is among the worst prepared secretaries of state in American history. He also knows
nothing about the history of the region.
The classic work on sanctions by K.A. ****** and G.C. Huffbauer “concluded that empirical research on 115 cases of sanctions imposed from World War I to 1990 indicate that
sanctions are more likely to succeed if its goal is modest,
the target country is smaller than the sending country,
the receiving and sending countries have friendly relations with substantial trade prior to imposition of sanctions,
the cost to sending country is not significant, and sanctions are imposed quickly and decisively.”
(Quoting S. Shojai and Patricia S. Root, “Effectiveness Of Economic Sanctions: Empirical Research Revisited,” The International Business & Economics Research Journal (Online) Vol. 12, Issue 11. Date: 2013.)
Pompeo’s press on Iran is the opposite of those successful cases in most regards.
The US did not have good trade relations with Iran before Pompeo, and Pompeo’s demands are extremely wide-ranging.
Historical experience therefore predicts failure.

the arm-twisting is meeting resistance in parts of Europe, especially among allies who helped negotiate and sign the disarmament accord and want to sustain it to constrain Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
The State Department official, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity, said countries must stop imports of Iranian oil by the November deadline or face so-called secondary sanctions for trading with Iran. No waivers are planned,
Iran’s most significant customers are China, India, South Korea and Japan, while France and Italy are the largest in Europe.

Giuliani Vows That Trump Will Help Bring Down the Iranian Regime
The Trump Administration is now signalling to its allies and Iranian dissidents that its new policy—to choke Tehran economically and publicly support local protesters—can topple the revolutionary government in Iran.
“We are now very realistic in being able to see an end of the regime in Iran,” :lol
Giuliani compared Trump’s support for the protests to President Reagan’s support for the opponents of Communist rule in Eastern Europe in the nineteen-eighties. :lol

Iran just threatened unprecedented retaliation against the United States over Trump’s reckless attack
Iran is threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz to all seagoing traffic. The narrow straight off its coast is, according to CNBC, (https://www.cnbc.com/2018/07/05/iran-is-threatens-to-close-critical-transit-lane-for-crude-oil.html?__source=twitter%7Cmain)“the world’s most important transit lane for crude oil.”
If Trump cuts all of its oil sales as it is threatening,
Iranian president Hassan Rouhani said his country is ready to disrupt crude (and natural gas shipments) as well as end its cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog.
The Pentagon is already talking tough and is likely to be backed by the hawks around Trump.
The U.S. Navy said it is ready to confront Iran with a military response if it tries to close the Strait.
“Bill Urban, a spokesman for US Central Command, said Washington and its allies provided security in the region and would not stand idly by,” reports The Guardian. (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jul/05/iran-retaliate-us-oil-threats-eu-visit-hassan-rouhani-trump)
“Together,” said Urban, “we stand ready to ensure the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce wherever international law allows,” he said.
If a military conflict erupts, it would not be the first time.

Iran nuclear deal: US rejects EU plea for sanctions exemption
The US has rejected pleas from the EU to grant exemptions to European firms from the sanctions on Iran that will start to be reinstated next month.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin wrote in a letter that they wanted to exert "unprecedented" pressure on Tehran.
In 2017, EU exports to Iran (goods and services) totalled €10.8bn (£9.5bn; $12.9bn),
and imports from Iran were worth €10.1bn.

‘NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN,’ Trump tweets in warning to Iran’s Rouhani
“To Iranian President Rouhani:
NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR
YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES
THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE.
WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH.
BE CAUTIOUS!”
Trump tweeted. ( :lol NOT Trash's words. Sounds like dickless twerp Stephen Miller! :lol )
Iran’s state-owned Islamic Republic News Agency replied within hours, dismissing Trump’s tweet and describing it as a “passive reaction” to Rouhani’s remarks.
Earlier Sunday, Rouhani said the United States should avoid inciting Iranians against the government as the Trump administration is poised to reimpose sanctions suspended under the 2015 nuclear deal that Trump withdrew from in May.
“America should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars,” Rouhani told a meeting of Iranian diplomats, according to IRNA.
“You are not in a position to incite the Iranian nation against Iran’s security and interests,” Rouhani said.
Gen. Gholam Hossein Gheibparvar, head of the Revolutionary Guard’s paramilitary Basij force, said
the United States “won’t dare” take military action against Iran, whose missiles can hit most of the Middle East.
Iran also controls part of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow passageway for all of the Persian Gulf oil tanker traffic.
Bigger sanctions, which will take effect in November, are aimed at
cutting off virtually all of Iran’s oil market. :lol

Bolton and Pompeo are obesessed with attacking Iran
As Trump Tweets Threats, Warnings of His Team 'Working in Lock Step to Lay Groundwork' for War With Iran
Following weekend reporting (https://www.commondreams.org/news/2018/07/22/warnings-iraq-war-redux-bolton-and-pompeo-are-reportedly-leading-push-foment-unrest) that key members of President Donald Trump's cabinet are leading a campaign to "foment unrest" in Iran, and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's warning (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2018/07/play-lion-tail-rouhani-warns-trump-180722162909627.html) that a conflict between the two countries "would be the mother of all wars,"
"last month the United States said it would impose sanctions on all exporters (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/26/world/middleeast/us-iran-oil-sanctions-.html) of Iranian oil. American officials have since moderated the sanctions demand (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/02/world/middleeast/us-iran-oil-imports-sanctions-.html), which roiled oil markets."
Reutersreported (https://www.commondreams.org/news/2018/07/22/warnings-iraq-war-redux-bolton-and-pompeo-are-reportedly-leading-push-foment-unrest) that Trump's national security adviser John Bolton (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/global-opinions/wp/2018/03/24/john-bolton-wants-regime-change-in-iran-and-so-does-the-cult-that-paid-him/) and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/05/pompeos-new-iran-strategy-regime-change-in-all-but-name.html) have "launched an offensive of speeches and online communications meant to foment unrest and
help pressure Iran to end its nuclear program and its support of militant groups,"
which is supposed to "work in concert with [Trump's] push to economically throttle Iran by re-imposing tough sanctions."
"Everything they're doing right now is only compatible with a policy of confrontation."
Pompeo reportedly claimed (http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pompeo-iran-talk-20180722-story.html) the nation's leadership
"resembles the Mafia more than a government" and
called Iran's clerics "hypocritical holy men."
"The whole administration appears to be working in lock step to lay the groundwork for a military confrontation.
By lodging personal attacks against Iran's supreme leader,
making demands that no one believes Iran can fulfill, and
hinting at regime change,
the administration is making clear that military action is very much on the table."
"Without a doubt, this is not an administration that is pursuing a policy of actually trying to find a new way to the negotiating table or striking a new deal.
Everything they're doing right now is only compatible with a policy of confrontation," Parsi concluded
"Whether that confrontation will take place through a direct military confrontation,
or whether it will be the Trump administration continuing and intensifying their efforts to destabilize Iran—
or, as Reuters reported over the weekend, to foment unrest in Iran—
remains to be seen."

Yet another irony is that if either through triggering some kind of successful democratic uprising that would overthrow the Islamic regime, or if one were to be installed a la Iraq after a “successful” invasion, this regime would demand to have civilian nuclear power, which is overwhelmingly supported by the Iranian population (although maybe aid to Hezbollah and Hamas would end). The opposition Greens, who were violently suppressed in 2009, supported civilian nuclear power. Iran has been working for it since Eisenhower initially provided US support for it in Iran to the Shah. In the end the outcome in terms of the nuclear issue, after who knows how much cost in lives and material, would be something like what we had with the JCPOA,a carefully monitored and controlled civilian nuclear program. https://econospeak.blogspot.com/2018/08/trumps-illegal-economic-sanctions.html

Already happening with Iran, Russia, Turkey, China, India(in Iran trade)

The Donald Trump administration is scrambling to get concessions out of Russia on Syria before the Bashar al-Assad regime completes its reconquest of the country, greatly constraining any remaining US leverage. With Assad’s forces poised to take back the last remaining rebel bastion of Idlib, US officials are in a race to get Moscow to help curtail Iranian influence. Washington is worried that a final Assad victory will give Tehran and its proxies free rein to ferry weapons and supplies through to the Mediterranean Sea, threatening Israel and other US allies.

Being a bully has its drawbacks. Germany to probe SWIFT alternatives:
"The current issues with Iranian financial institutions accessing SWIFT is not a new development of economic diplomacy malfunctioning. Disputes between the USA administration and SWIFT arose in 2006 and 2012 respectively, with their resolutions not being satisfactory for both parties," Bovis went on.
"It is also highly likely that the EU will develop a system which mirrors the SWIFT functions but without the interference of the US administration," Bovis said.
"The Deutsche Börse owns and controls international central securities depositories such as Euroclear and Clearstream. SWIFT does not have a monopoly in international intra-banking transactions. The EU has legal and regulatory powers to combine asset and cash swapping and clearing houses and create a parallel system to SWIFT in order to accommodate transactions of Iranian financial institutions in the light of the recent agreement between Iran and the major western economies, including Russia, after the withdrawal of the current USA administration.
This parallel system of financial infrastructure represents a type of financial utility which could be linked to the European Investment Bank and provide denominated credit facilities in euros," Bovis added.
Academics Esfandyar Batmanghelidj and Axel Hellman have argued, for example, that during a previous Iranian SWIFT ban in 2012-16, several European banks were able to maintain their relationships with Iranian financial institutions by using "ad hoc messaging systems" and this could be revived.
The two academics posit a rise in the use of so-called gateway banks — which have access to the ECB's value payments system, Target2, and limited exposure to the US financial system — which would conduct euro transactions on behalf of buyers and sellers of Iranian oil. Instead of using SWIFT bank identifier codes to indicate account number, Batmanghelidj and Hellman point to the possibility of using IBAN numbers, a different international standard.

The Trump administration’s willingness to “negotiate” with Iran is very much like its readiness to make a “deal” with the Palestinians: the other side is expected to make extensive concessions in exchange for nothing and will be punished severely until they agree to these humiliating terms. It is no wonder that the Iranian government has no interest in “negotiations” that amount to capitulation. https://www.theamericanconservative.com/larison/trumps-bankrupt-iran-policy/

Even if the U.S. had not reneged on the nuclear deal and proven that it can’t be trusted to honor its commitments, it would be extremely unlikely that Iran would be open to making more concessions than it has already made on the nuclear issue. Once the U.S. reneged on the deal, that made it politically impossible for any Iranian leader to negotiate with Washington. Once the U.S. started reimposing sanctions without justification, it became clear that the administration’s real goal was not a “new deal” but the destabilization and toppling of the regime.

Sanctions are going to hurt the Iranian people and strengthen their hardline rulers, The people will blame the US, which reneged on a deal Iran is still in compliance with.
But by barring banks doing business with Iran from operating in the US or even using dollars, the restrictions effectively severely limit imports of food and medicine.
“Humanitarian goods are not sanctioned,” Gerard Araud, French ambassador to Washington, said at a forum (https://youtu.be/r7AGrxKSrOw?t=2011) last month. “But the fact is that the banks are so terrified by the sanctions that they don’t want to do anything with Iran.”

Trump says he wants to go slower on sanctions for Iran's oil
- U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday said he wants to impose sanctions on Iran’s oil gradually, citing concerns about shocking energy markets and causing global price spikes.
“With the oil, it’s very interesting.
We have the toughest sanctions ever imposed, but on oil we want to go a little bit slower because I don’t want to drive (up) the oil prices in the world,” he told reporters before flying to a campaign event.
“This has nothing to do with Iran...
I could get the Iran oil down to zero immediately but it would cause a shock to the market. I don’t want to lift oil prices.”

lol Chris lionizing the MEK, a Marxist cult
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/bb/Emblem_of_the_People%27s_Mujahedin_of_Iran.svg/125px-Emblem_of_the_People%27s_Mujahedin_of_Iran.svg.png (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Emblem_of_the_People%27s_Mujahedin_of_Iran.sv g)In supporting the MEK, Chris bears more than a passing resemblance to neocons and globalists.
Marxist roots:
At the time, the MEK, whose members were largely idealistic middle-class students, combined Islamism with Marxist doctrine. They reinterpreted the Qur’anic passages that undergirded their Shia faith as injunctions to socialise the means of production, eliminate the class system and promote the struggles of Iran’s ethnic minorities. Steeped in thinkers such as Frantz Fanon and Régis Debray, they expressed solidarity with national liberation movements in Algeria, Cuba, Palestine and Vietnam. Quoting Lenin’s famous pamphlet, the MEK posed the question: “What Is to Be Done?” “Our answer is straightforward,” the MEK wrote: “Armed struggle.”
Revolutionary pedigree:
When Rajavi emerged from prison in 1979, three weeks before the Iranian revolution, he was the undisputed leader of Iran’s most deadly underground rebel group.
The MEK played an important role in the 1979 revolution, seizing the imperial palace and doing much of the fighting to neutralise the police and the army.
Cult-like organization:
Isolated inside its Iraqi base, under Rajavi’s tightening grip, the MEK became cult-like. A report commissioned by the US government (https://www.rand.org/pubs/monographs/MG871.html), based on interviews within Camp Ashraf, later concluded that the MEK had “many of the typical characteristics of a cult, such as authoritarian control, confiscation of assets, sexual control (including mandatory divorce and celibacy), emotional isolation, forced labour, sleep deprivation, physical abuse and limited exit options”.
“We were far away from the world,” one member, who only escaped the MEK after the move to Albania, told me. “We had no information. No television, no radio.” Instead, within the camp, they had “Mojahedin television”, which consisted of looped speeches by Maryam and Massoud Rajavi, played “all day long”.
Rajavi told his followers that the failure of Eternal Light was not a military blunder, but was instead rooted in the members’ thoughts for their spouses; their love had sapped their will to fight. In 1990, all couples inside the camp were ordered to divorce – and women had their wedding rings replaced by pendants engraved with Massoud’s face. Spouses were separated, and their children were sent to be “adopted” by MEK supporters in Europe.
MEK commanders demanded that all members publicly reveal any errant sexual thoughts. Manouchelur Abdi, a 55-year-old who also left the MEK in Albania, told me that the confession sessions used to take place every morning. Even feelings of love and friendship were outlawed, he says. “I would have to confess that I missed my daughter,” he says. “They would shout at me. They would humiliate me. They would say that my family was the enemy and missing them was strengthening the hand of the mullahs in Tehran.
The testimony of these recent defectors follows earlier reports from groups such as Human Rights Watch, which reported former members witnessed “beatings, verbal and psychological abuse, coerced confessions, threats of execution and torture that in two cases led to death”.
Forced sterilization:
“They said I had a cyst,” she told me. “But they also took out my womb. They told me that it meant that I had an even stronger connection to our ideological leader.” Hedayati, who left the group in Iraq and now lives in Norway, says she was never sexually abused, but was “brainwashed” by the group into divorcing her husband, and alleges that more than 100 other women were sterilised by MEK doctors. “I always ask myself why they did this to us,” Bagheri said. “Of course, to take away our futures.”
Backed by Saddam in Iraq, attacked its own countrymen FOR TWENTY YEARS:
For almost two decades, under their embittered leader Massoud Rajavi, the MEK staged attacks against civilian and military targets across the border in Iran and helped Saddam suppress his own domestic enemies. But after siding with Saddam – who indiscriminately bombed Iranian cities and routinely used chemical weapons in a war that cost a million lives – the MEK lost nearly all the support it had retained inside Iran. Members were now widely regarded as traitors.
Helped Saddam crush Kurds and other domestic opposition:
“Take the Kurds under your tanks, and save your bullets for the Iranian revolutionary guards.” The MEK vehemently denies it participated in Saddam’s campaigns to put down the Shia and Kurdish rebellions, but an Iraqi human rights tribunal has indicted MEK leaders for their role in suppressing the uprisings.
Paid off John Bolton:
John Bolton, who has made multiple appearances at events supporting the MEK, is estimated to have received upwards of $180,000. According to financial disclosure forms, Bolton was paid $40,000 for a single appearance at the Free Iran rally in Paris in 2017.
GWB delisted the MEK, Obama protected the it from Nouri Al Maliki and found it safe haven in Albania:
Daniel Benjamin, who was then the head of counter-terrorism at the state department, told me that the US decided to remove the MEK from the list of foreign terrorist organisations not because it believed it had abandoned violence, but to “avoid them all getting killed” if it remained in Iraq. After the MEK was no longer designated a terrorist group, the US was able to convince Albania to accept the 2,700 remaining members – who were brought to Tirana on a series of charter flights between 2014 and 2016.
Too weak to topple the mullahs, no domestic constituency:
Analysts agree that the MEK lacks the capacity or support to overthrow the Iranian government – as even Bolton and Pompeo would surely concede. “They are probably smart enough to know that this group is not democratic and anyway has no constituency inside Iran,”https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/nov/09/mek-iran-revolution-regime-trump-rajavi

Europe Is Set to Needle Trump With Iran Trade Promotion Plan
Three European powers (https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/EZU:US) are set to make good on
a plan to help companies trade with Iran,
defying President Donald Trump with a bid to bypass U.S. sanctions.
The entity, which could be presented as early as Monday, is key to the
European Union’s effort to save a 2015 nuclear accord with Iran
after Trump withdrew the U.S.
Whatever the economic impact, the push by
the U.K., France and Germany is another sign of European exasperation with the president.
A draft of an EU statement seen by Bloomberg welcomes the three-nation initiative as providing “a positive impact on trade and economic relations with Iran, but most importantly on the lives of Iranian people.”

Sold to an ally, lost to an enemy
The US shipped weapons and secrets to the Saudis and Emiratis. Now, some are in the hands of fighters linked to al Qaeda and Iran.
Saudi Arabia and its coalition partners have transferred American-made weapons to al Qaeda-linked fighters, hardline Salafi militias, and other factions
waging war in Yemen, in violation of their agreements with the United States,
The weapons have also made their way
into the hands of Iranian-backed rebels
battling the coalition for control of the country,
exposing some of America's sensitive military technology to Tehran
and potentially endangering the lives of US troops in other conflict zones.
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, its main partner in the war, have used the US-manufactured weapons as a form of currency to buy the loyalties of militias or tribes, bolster chosen armed actors, and influence the complex political landscape,
By handing off this military equipment to third parties,
the Saudi-led coalition is breaking the terms of its arms sales with the US,
according to the Department of Defense. After CNN presented its findings, a US defense official confirmed there was an ongoing investigation into the issue.

who could have guessed Iraq would have bridled at Trump's public suggestion that the US would make itself welcome in Iraq to "keep an eye on Iran"?
President Trump’s unexpected announcement that he wanted American troops in Iraq to stay there to “watch Iran” achieved a previously unattainable goal on Monday: unity in the Iraqi political establishment.
The problem for Mr. Trump was that the unity was a collective rejection of his proposal, and added momentum to proposed legislation that could hamper American troops’ ability to operate in Iraq. The measure, which is now being drafted, would limit American troop movements and activities in Iraq.

Iran is still abiding by the P5+1 deal.
The US, by cancelling sanctions waivers, is trying to get Iran and its partners to abandon the deal -- which would be a pretext for US war.
This has been a case of the administration wanting to have its cake and eat it, since it takes for granted that Iran is complying with the agreement and tacitly acknowledges that the agreement is worth having. Iran hawks in the Senate, including Ted Cruz, Tom Cotton, and Marco Rubio (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-04-11/fresh-u-s-divide-on-iran-emerges-over-expiring-nuclear-waivers), have been leading the charge to cancel these waivers because they object to Iran’s nuclear program itself no matter what it is being used for. They don’t distinguish between legitimate civilian nuclear projects and illicit military ones, and they deliberately try to confuse them to mislead the public about what Iran is doing.
The hawkish extremists have always wanted Iran’s nuclear program to be abolished, and if they can’t have that they want to create a pretext for conflict that allows for military action against Iran. Canceling these waivers would be the next step on the path to forcing Iran to abandon the nuclear deal and provide them with that pretext.
Revoking the waivers certainly makes no sense for U.S. interests, as any credible arms control expert would tell you (https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/23/politics/trump-considers-revoking-nuclear-sanctions-waivers/index.html):
Kelsey Davenport, the director of nonproliferation policy at the Arms Control Association, argued it would be a “dangerous and irresponsible decision not to renew the waivers.”
“Failing to renew the waivers would be a huge own goal for the United States. It’s in US national security interests to ensure that Iranian nuclear facilities cannot be quickly reconverted for nuclear weapons purposes,” Davenport said. “If the United States stops the remaining states party to the agreement from fulfilling those projects, it puts them in violation for the deal which just gives Iran future justification for abandoning the agreement.”
Bloomberg also reported (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-04-11/fresh-u-s-divide-on-iran-emerges-over-expiring-nuclear-waivers) on this earlier this month:
“It’s insane from a nonproliferation perspective,” said Jarrett Blanc, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a former State Department coordinator for Iran nuclear implementation. “Deciding to throw that away because you need the next drumbeat of antagonism toward Iran is nuts.”

I have railed for years against various "false flag" conspiracy theories. Most false flags... aren't.
Bolton and other long time ethically challenged chickenhawks getting charge of Iran policy from a lazy, disinterested and distracted president makes the picture as to what happned a lot less clear.
The fact that a Japanese ship was hit at the same time the Japanese minister is negotiating... smells like a group trying to pin something on the Iranians.
Also plausible is that this really was an Iranian operation, meant to underscore what they COULD do, if they so chose, a prod to get the US back to the table.

If Trump didn't want war, why did he hire Bolton and Pompeo?
Iran has long been the unprincipled exception to Trump’s opposition to Middle Eastern quagmires. His desire to undo the Obama presidency predisposed him to unraveling the nuclear deal and led him to folly in Yemen. Now it might prompt him to redo the foreign policy mistakes that toppled the Bush dynasty, paving the way for a socialist to become the next commander-in-chief.https://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/war-with-iran-would-make-trump-a-one-term-president/

good article arguing why Iran was not the shooter
Eve of Destruction: Iran Strikes Back (https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/06/24/eve-of-destruction-iran-strikes-back/)
It seemed beyond credibility that
Iran would attack a Japanese tanker, the Kokuka Courageous, at the moment the Prime Minister of Japan was sitting down with Ayatollah Khamenei in Tehran.
After all, Iran is eager to keep its oil exports flowing, so it would hardly want to so flagrantly insult one of its top oil customers.
Nor did it seem to make sense that Iran would target a Norwegian vessel, Front Altair.
That tanker is owned the shipping company, Frontline, which belongs to Norway’s richest man (before he moved to Cyprus), John Fredriksen.
Fredriksen made his fortune moving Iranian oil during the Iran-Iraq war,
Fredriksen’s Frontline company has continued to help Iran move its oil in a way that evades sanctions. A friendlier resource Iran has not.
This is the guy Iran chose to target ... ?
All of this—
the history of US false-flags and war-justifying lies, the specifics of the targets hit, and the risibility of the evidence presented—
made it very difficult for the Trump Administration to assemble a critical mass of domestic or international consent for a military attack on Iran.
https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/06/24/eve-of-destruction-iran-strikes-back/ (https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/06/24/eve-of-destruction-iran-strikes-back/)

Trump May Already be in Too Deep to Avoid War With Iran (https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/06/25/trump-may-already-in-too-deep-to-avoid-war-with-iran/)
The US is not going to launch an all-out war against Iran in pursuit of a decisive victory and anything less creates more problems than it resolves.
Iran would certainly retain post-strike the ability to launch pin-prick attacks up and down the Gulf and, especially, in and around the 35-mile wide Strait of Hormuz through which passes 30 per cent of the world’s oil trade.
news of the shooting down of the drone immediately sent the price of benchmark Brent crude oil rocketing upwards by 4.75 per cent.
after the failure of the US ground forces to win in Iraq and Afghanistan, not to mention Somalia, no US leader can start a land war in the Middle East without endangering their political survival at home.
A senior Iraqi official once said to me that the Iranians “have a PhD” in this type of part political, part military warfare.
They are tactics that have worked well for Tehran in Lebanon, Iraq and Syria over the past 40 years.
The Iranians have many pressure points against the US, and above all against its Saudi and Emirati allies in the Gulf.
Trump is an isolationist, but he is also a populist national leader who claims in his first campaign rallies for the next presidential election to “have made America great again”.
Such boasts make it difficult to not retaliate against Iran, a country he has demonised as the source of all the troubles in the Middle East.
the limited military conflict between the US and Iran called the “tanker war”. This was part of the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s and the US came out the winner.
Israel, Saudi Arabia and UAE may have urged Trump to tear up the nuclear deal and confront Iran,
but they show no enthusiasm to join any war that ensues. :lol
Trump thinks he can avoid the quagmire of another Middle East war, but he may already be in too deep.
https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/06/25/trump-may-already-in-too-deep-to-avoid-war-with-iran/ (https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/06/25/trump-may-already-in-too-deep-to-avoid-war-with-iran/)

New leak claims Trump scrapped Iran nuclear deal 'to spite Obama'
Sir Kim Darroch described the move as an act of "diplomatic vandalism",
It says the memo was written after the then Foreign Secretary
Boris Johnson appealed to the US in 2018 to stick with the nuclear deal. (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-44018068)
Sir Kim wrote that President Trump appeared to be abandoning the nuclear deal for "personality reasons" because the pact had been agreed by his predecessor, Barack Obama.
The British ambassador is said to have highlighted
splits amongst US presidential advisors and
that the White House did not have a "day-to-day" strategy of what to do following withdrawal from the deal. :lol Trash chaos
Sir Kim wrote a memo to Mr Johnson, saying:
"The outcome illustrated the paradox of this White House:
you got exceptional access,
seeing everyone short of the president;
but on the substance,
the administration is set upon an act of diplomatic vandalism,
seemingly for ideological and personality reasons - it was Obama's deal.
