Spurs was 4th best defensive team without Kawhi. Granted we had Kyle and Danny, but again they were system players Spurs system created to best fit the need. DeRozan is a gym rat and has the athletic tools to improve, even better than Danny and Kyle (no disrespect). Offensively I think LMA/DeRozan will be more complimentary because of DeRozan effective PNR ballhandler, than LMA/Kawhi.

Tbh, Spurs improved with DeRozan esp when he transfers that 100% loyalty to this team and Pops helping him improve as a player. He will be a willing team player unlike Kawhi with his heart elsewhere. I am really excited and expect to be pleasantly surprised with what Pop’s genius can get from this new squad. This is yet another era in Spurs basketball. I wonder if the Spurs will try to utilise DeRozan as a corner 3 point shooter when he's playing off the ball. 2 of the past 3 seasons he's shot over 40% from the corner & the 2 seasons before that he shot 39%. The only anomaly was last season where it dipped badly, but this could also be because he took a much fewer of his 3s from the corner & his confidence was shot because he wasn't hitting from other areas. 4 of the past 5 seasons is a decent sample size.

Everyone will speculate. Ultimately a player that was never loyal wiuodve never done what DeRozan did. We at least know he has a loyal personality. It's up to the Spurs to show him why they are a worthy franchise for him.

I think it´s too early to say if he will take that option for now. Considering he will have to years here and might improve both his defense and 3pt shooting, that alone would make him a lot more valuable, and both things are teachable. Look at Aldridge.
What is to be said is that at that point Mills will be an expiring contract, Gasol will be off the books, and LA will be guaranteed for "only" 7 millions, so the Spurs cap situation, even considering the shitty Mills contract, seems very well for that year.
Had DeRozan fit well with us, the team and himself will be able to look at many options, a longer deal with a discount, take the PO, and then another deal, or whatever fits both parties. That Spurs have been very efficient at convincing players to move financially as they need, and also they have an impeccable track record of them paying the players what they are due in late career contracts.
I also am one of those posters who don´t like DeRozan´s game, but i also recall the Spurs were interested in him when he was drafted, so i do believe that they saw in him something else, other than his scoring, and i bet they are going to focus now on developing those things.
Kind of like a reverse Kawhi.

I wouldn't say he has a long way to go, considering he averaged 23+ last few years and has shown marked improvement with his 3P% and assists. The east has considerably less talent and, at the time he was one of the best players in his conference. I think he deserved the max. He's done nothing to show that he doesn't deserve the max, short of falling to James' Cavs year after year, but he still did well against other teams. We'll see I guess in 2 years what the free agent market looks like, but Spurs might not have many options if they want to stay competitive.

That's plausible, but I also think it's possible that DeMar views the Spurs specifically as deserving of his loyalty. They're a model franchise. After all, the Spurs didn't do anything wrong here, they only traded Number 2 because he basically forced his way out.
