All right I'll play.
Spurs
1. True - but I don't think he'll get that much hate. I say he plays decent, but his salary figures make him a target.
2. True - if history is any sort of guide. I think Pop will limit his minutes so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I can easily see NVE missing a couple of games as a preventitive (sp?) measure if his knees get a little creaky. I say NVE is healthy and ready to go for the play-offs though.
3. True - Tim Duncan looks healthier than he has in years. May not be much more than 20.5, but I am willing to bet he gets 22 easy.
4. False - I think Barry will find some minutes. Based on no evidence whatsoever, I say Barry plays better this year. I am thinking that Barry plays in at least 60 games.
5. Maybe - I dunno, this is a tough one. About 82 sounds right. What the heck - TRUE - and he shoots about 30-32% for his 3pa.
6. False - He works on his mechanics and that should mean a short-term hit, followed by long-term benefits. If his shooting improves, I think we will see the benefits next season, more than this one.
NBA
1. True - Probably. They will get a lot of national TV time, and I love Lebron's game.
2. True - Seems motivated. Will probably kill him for the play-offs though. SVG will push his players hard to keep from getting axed. Riley's strategy of back-stabbing completely back-fires as Heat produce good result in regular season, to get hammered in play-offs as the team is too drained to produce when it matters most.
3. True - Bogut seems like the solid type of player that won't get many high-lights but should be a solid contributer. I say he is 12-15 ppg and 8-10 rpg when it is all said and done.
4. True - of course. If things go well that is all they will be talking about. If things go poorly that is all they will be talking about. A run by Cavs would silence some of that talk maybe.
5. False - tough call. Very tough. I say they barely miss out with a 5 seed. Dallas should have a very good team, in a very hard division.
6. True - Houston should probably edge out Dallas and get the 4 seed. The Texas trio make division the toughest in the NBA. I could see the Houston vs. Dallas match-up going either way really, but I just think Houston has the horses.

4. Brent Barry will have more than 30 DNP/CD.

TRUE. This was tough. The Heat are stacked on paper, which should take some of the load off Shaq. However, none of their new players are consistent scorers, and I think that the Heat may have subtracted through addition. I guess what I'm saying is that I see Shaq making 62, but the reason may be he's playing hurt out of necessity.
3. Andrew Bogut will avg more than 10 ppg and 7 rpg.
FALSE. I am going to go out on a limb and predict that Bogut will be a cog in some team's Hack-a-Shaq Hydra in three or four years. (The biggest risk with this prediction is assuming that Shaq won't retire before Bogut is moved.) I agree with the previous posts that Bogut may get the ball on nearly every possession this season, so I could be dead wrong.

TRUE, TOO TRUE. The real story with the Lakers is finding out what exactly Mitch Kupchak is on; I want to try two hits of whatever it is... Seriously, the Lakers are carrying some players that I don't even expect to be in the league in a few years (and not from aging gracefully and retiring). Does anyone except Jerry Buss really expect for Kwame Brown to turn his life around?
5. Dallas will get homecourt in 1st round.
FALSE. I think it is more likely that Dallas misses the playoffs entirely. (I do think they make the playoffs, of course.)
6. Houston will get homecourt in 1st round.

I haven't done the math, but I would think that it would become difficult for any SW Division opponent to seed that high if the Spurs win over 62 games. (I expect them to win at least 60.) Again, I didn't do the math, and I didn't account for the Hornets totally throwing off the "average," so to speak. In other words, the other SW teams will also be racking up more or less automatic Division wins against New Orleans/OK City/Baton Rouge/Anaheim/whatever.
Anyone more mathematically inclined interested in looking into this? I will do it if someone could give me the probability equation; I was never good at figuring probability.

Anyone more mathematically inclined interested in looking into this? I will do it if someone could give me the probability equation; I was never good at figuring probability.
I'll take a whack at it. I'm a graduate math student. My undergrad and grad classes were in calculus (i,ii,iii), differential equations, intro to topology, general topology, linear algebra, abstract algebra and analysis i and ii. Set theory, ... but no classes in probability directly.
I will do it soon. It's just I got a paper on Pascal I am writing, but as I say this looks pretty straightforward.
Probably the key is going to be making reasonable assumptions in terms of Spurs record in the division and Hornets record in the division. Possibly looking at Spurs winning 2/3 of their games in division or better.
Hornets, still at the bottom of the barrel, losing 2/3 or more of their games in division. So, Spurs beat Houston and Houston beats Hornets....
This leaves Houston (as an example) with a 50 % record against these two opponents. To get their % higher, they are going to have to make up for it either by winning better than 75 % of their other games. 60 wins is almost 75 %. 60-22. Since 50 % is lower than the 75 % that they want to average, they have to make up for it by a much higher percentage.
Now, just as common sense would suggest, it becomes increasingly less likely since a record of 60 wins is not likely to coincide with a bad record in one's own division. After all, this is truly a zero sum game.
This is just off hand analysis off the top of my head. I don't have a formula per se. Part of that stems from the fact that we have so many variables.
Probably somebody has written a complex program with an algorith to just spit this out. I don't have that. However, there would be so many possible outcomes, many of which would have relatively close degrees of probability. So, in this case, the exact numbers are not as helpful since there would be tons of them. On the other hand, a rough, but reasonable outcome based upon what we think are reasonably accurate forecasts is I think within our reach and will serve the purpose.
More work later. Back to Pascal, induction and his stupid triangle with binomial theorem. recursive sequences... Blah....
Hope this helps at least some.
Reggie Miller

Thanks! I was just going by the sort of common sense assumptions you mention. That is, you would assume that a team that wins over 75% of its games would win at least 75% in its own division. Since there are only so many games and wins to go around, any team winning 60+ games has to affect the other teams in the division. When I attempted a rough equation, I gave up in a few seconds, because I thought of all of the variables. Here's a few of the ones I came up with:
Historically, successful teams tend to play better at home and/or in their own division. Home advantage is difficult enough to model, even though it theoretically cancels out (41 away/41 home). However, this year we have a team in the division that does not have a home court, so to speak.
Assuming an "intradivision" factor exists, it would require a lot of data to insure anything like accuracy. In other words, we might learn that an overall record of 75% equated with an average of 80% in the division with a mean closer to 85%. (That would not shock me, but it does sound a bit high.) The problem is that as you get closer to 65 wins, you would run into the problem of insufficient data. Too few teams have finished that high, and the schedule wasn't always 82 games.
It then occurred to me that the Hornets make it even more difficult, because it is not unreasonable to think that they will set a new "worst season" record. That was a real possibilty before they became nomads. I almost expect the Texas teams to sweep their season series with the Hornets.
