Federer was incredible but when all is said and done Novak is the GOAT. Unbelievable.

3 best of all time. Federer would probably have 25 majors if it was 'acceptable' to underarm serve to Nadal to stop him receiving 7-8 metres behind the baseline.

Nope. Because it is about more than just majors won. Fed still has 20, but beyond that look at the record books. He owns every single record worth talking about in the game of tennis. Fed has the most GS, but also Finals, SF, QF appearances all time. Most Grand Slam Matches at 353. Most weeks at Number 1 at 310. Fed also is going to pass Connors for all time matches won. 1274-1222. He likely passes Jimmy sometime next year.. Sadly men's Tennis is not in good shape. Fed, Nadal, and Novak all old, and nobody is coming up. No young players are doing much of anything. So maybe Novak wins some more on the very back end with no challenges. But Fed is the GOAT. He did everything.

Nah, Fed has choked a whopping 22 match points in his career far far more than. Coma or nadal
He also has a mediocre head to head against both nadal and Djokovic
Federer played during some insanely weak completion in 2004-2097 and choked like crazy in the pressure moments
He had an amazing run, probably number 2 all time but Djokovic is the GOAT. His peak in 2015 was the highest level tennis has ever been played at. Absolutely unplayable
He’ll definitely overtake Fed in GS total and crush him head to head

Explain to me how Roger is not the greatest of all time given everything I just laid out? I already explained it to you. He has every record in the book. Every single fucking one of them. Tennis is different than other sports because we are talking individual. So everything you do you did it individually. There was no team bullshit. Roger owns every single fucking record. Winning 21 grand slams is not enough to prove you were the best of all time. Not when the other guy owns everything else. And explain to me whoever in tennis history at age 38 has double match point against a legend in his prime? Nobody was even playing tennis at 38. I mean Roger is so far and away the greatest.

Those are all from several years ago
Novak has had FIFTEEN grand slams this decade to Federer's 5. Federer has a huge mental block against both his biggest rivals in Novak and Nadal.
Federer also crumbles under pressure. Djokovic will break Federer's record of most weeks at #1 as well as Grand Slams. He's also held all 4 grand slams at once something Federer has never done.
I mean Federer's H2H is shocking for someone who is considered the GOAT. He had his time, and has crumbled many more times to his rivals than they have against him.
Federer has been doing a great job for his age, but Djokovic's C game (like the recent wimbledon final) beats Federer's B+ game.
Djokovic is steam rolling with no opposition in sight. Nadal will also overtake his GS total even though I'd still have Federer as #2 since most of Nadal's have been so much on clay.
When we look at advanced stats with ELO rating Djokovic absolutely CRUSHES it:
https://tennisabstract.com/reports/atp_elo_ratings.html
When we even re-look at them so their ages align, Djokovic wins out again:
https://i.imgur.com/KmF7XrA.png
Fed early on beat an aging agassi and samprass
The first great player Federer faced to win a grand slam was a #7 seed 35-year-old Agassi to win his sixth major. He was mostly playing against other guys his own age (Hewitt/Roddick/Safin) in his early dominance, without any greats standing in his way.
There was a decade-long gap between Sampras (born 1971) and Federer (born 1981) without a single all-time great, which made it very easy for him to breakthrough. Conversely, there is now seemingly no great player born after Djokovic for at least a decade, which is making his late career easier I agree with that.
But at the end of the day, Djokovic is inevitable. When people look back at the Fed/Dokovic rivalry and Djokovic/Nadal rivalry Djokovic towers above the rest.
Djokovic will be holding a lot of records himself when all is said and done. His injury nearly derailed him but he bounced back beautifully. He's only 32 and I think he'll finish with 22 slams.

Uh Roger is almost 40 and how did Wimbledon just go? Did he get smoked in 3 sets or something? He had 2 match points on his serve. Roger blew that match more than Novak won it. He is about 6 years older. The all time Head to Head is 26-22 for Novak, and you talk like Fed is losing 40-8... Through 20 matches in 2011 Roger was up 13-7. By 2015 it was 20-20. Novak has won 5 in a row from 2015 on now facing an old Fed. But Fed is doing at 37 and 38 what nobody has done, or ever will again. Novak got a long way to go. He needs 5 to pass Fed. That is a lot of Majors and injuries are never to be discounted. Plus Young guys come out of nowhere. Stefano Tsitsipas for example is someone to keep an eye on..

And I bet you had 2011 or 2015 Djokovic played a pre-prime Federer he'd beat him in straight sets as well. By any metric 2011 and 2015 Djokovic was the GOAT, his 2015 might be the greatest season in tennis history when you factor in competition as well.
Uh Roger is almost 40 and how did Wimbledon just go? Did he get smoked in 3 sets or something? He had 2 match points on his serve. Roger blew that match more than Novak won it. Even if you remove the grand slams from 2015 onward, you still have a VERY good Federer betwen 2010-2014 (part of which was still his prime) and Djokovic has doubled his Grand slam tally for this decade which case prior to 2015 he was up 10-5 in grand slams.
Federer had it pretty easy for the most part from 2004-2007, and then when it got harder he flustered a bit. Djokovic had it very tough from 2008 onward when he started winning slams and only very lately has the competition softened up as Federer aged and Nadal has been hit by some injuries in the past. I know anything can happen, and Djokovic's horrible drought during his injury period had many doubting if he'd ever find his form again, but he's still head and shoulders above the competition, with a huge advantage on hard courts. He's the greatest hard court player ever and I think when he retires he'll be the greatest grass court player ever as well.
5 more isn't an easy feat but I think when all is said and done he'll have the GS record as well as most weeks at #1 all time record.
For Feder, his two biggest rivals he has a losing record against. I agree it's not a crazy W-L deficit but it's there from BOTH his biggest rivals. And it's been much worse this decade.
I think Djokovic played a painfully mediocre wimbledon final, I'd struggle to give him above a C. A lot of stupid unforced errors and poor serving that is uncharacteristic of him.
Federer played a B+ overall and still lost. That' the scary thing. Djokovic doesn't have to play at nearly a high level to beat Federer whereas Federer has to have a near perfect game to beat Novak.
Even in 2011 and 2012 US Open matches where Federer choked, he had such a massive mental block against Novak this decade it's unreal. Novak has an extra gear that Federer doesn't have. Novak can sleepwalk through sets and then flip a switch and be unplayable. His ceiling is the highest in tennis history for me.
Whatever happens it'll be fun to see who retires with what. Yet, for some reason I can't have Nadal ever being my GOAT personally, but maybe that's just me

I actually disagree. I think it needs to be more than that. Fed owns everything. 21 slams to his 20 is not enough to take the GOAT tag from him IMO. The man owns every major record in the books not just slams won. Novak has a tough time ahead, mostly because he is immensely unpopular with fans, and the media. The crowds when he plays a player like Fed or Rafa root against him to the point of anger and jealousy on his part. If he is up against a youngster in the US Open Finals this year, he will be rooted against again. Maybe he uses that as further fuel. But I don't see fans and media ever really giving it up to him as the GOAT.. He Is not someone they admire.

Roger doesn't own every major record, tbh. He doesn't own the master series rcord and he has losing h2h against both Nadal and Djokovic.
My favourite will always be Roger, and in terms of prime, he was clearly the best, imho. But if either Nadal or Djokovic pass him on GS's they have a good case to be considered the GOAT over him.

Most weeks at number 1
Most GS titles
Most Finals, SF, QF,
Most Grand Slams played
He will pass Conors for most matches won next year..
That is a mouthful.. Novak has won about 400 less total matches.. Fed has 102 titles. Novak has 75..

Most GS played and most QF, SF and finals are meaningless records. If Djokovic ends up as the all-time leading winner in GS's, Master Series and ends with a winning % vs both Roger and Rafa, it would be really hard to argue against him being the GOAT. As much as it would pain me to say it.

Meaningless record according to who? Every single time he advances in a grand slam those statistics are brought up. It is an amazing testament to longevity. People talk about Pete Sampras as being top three or top five all time. The man literally won 500 less tennis matches than Roger. That shit matters. It counts. By your logic these players should only show up four times a year. That all of these other tournaments they playing mean jack shit, so dont bother even competing. Thats not how it works. Every time you step on the court it matters. If certain people simply want to count grand slam titles OK fine. I wont. I will look at the entirety of a mans career.

Wayne Ferreira once held the record for most Grand Slams played consecutively. Nobody is calling him the GOAT of anything, tbh.
And what you mean by "my logic" players should only show up 4 times a year? Didn't I brought up "most Master Series won" to the discussion?
If Djokovic ends up with a head to head advantage over Federer, plus most Master Series won, plus most Grand Slams won, Federer can play a million Grand Slams that it will be hard to objectively rank him over Novak.
And I'm a huge Federer fan, but I call it how it is, tbh.

Amen, and I think the only records that matter for GOAT will be total GS won and most weeks at #1, something I expect Djokovic to finish with
Check out this article about Djokovic 2015 vs Federer 2006. Towards the bottom of the article they go into depth about the two seasons in comparison with each other. I think it's spot on personally, but obviously Federer's 2006 is up there:

I thought any metric had, not only 2015, but also 2011 Djokovic over any other player. :lol
2006 Federer > 2015 Djokovic by a small but sure enough margin, tbh.
Better winning %
Better % of sets won
Better % of games won
Better % of points won
The only argument that could be made in favour of Djokovic is the two Masters Series advantage but when you factor that Roger didn't play two master series in 2006 that argument loses weight.
The "competition" argument is a subjective bullshit one. That's the type of argument old farts would use to still claim that Sampras is better than Djokovic. In fact, I could argue that, since 2006 Nadal > 2015 Nadal, Roger is actually the one that had the tougher competition. One thing is for sure though, 2006 Federer wouldn't have wasted the opportunity of winning a calender year slam in a Roland Garros final vs Stanislas fucking Wawrinka, tbh.
Another missed opportunity for Djokovic was the Golden medal in 2015. 2006 Federer probably adds gold to his resume.

Federer is one of the biggest mentally soft players when it comes to capitalizing. He's blown 22 match points and several against Djokovic himself. Federer is the last guy to seal the deal especially as his career has gone. He sucks with pressure.
Wawrinka was INCREDIBLE in that match when he beat Djokovic.
I think 2011 Djokovic is the greatest player ever, but 2015 was the greatest season in tennis history, won multiple masters on clay as well, and was winning some of those tourneys as a slight underdog.
Federer had weak competition in 2004-2007, it's a fact. Roddick was his toughest competition and once Nadal came into prominence he started beating H2H.
2015 was just an insane year for Novak on just about EVERY surface. His record against a better top 10 than what Federer faced in 2006 was fantastic. Much better ELO rating for that season than Federer for 2006 too.

To say someone "Always Chokes" that means they never have success.. In the Open Era he is tied all time with Connors, and Sampras. They all have 5.. So he is in a 3 way tie for the most wins ever at the US Open. And he will retire when he can't compete anymore. He was in the finals at Wimbledon.

He's got Majors off Nadal and Novak Son.. In 2017 he beat Nadal to win the Aussie Open. He Beat him again at the Wimbledon semi's this year. He beat Novak in his youth to win at the US Open. Won Wimbledon twice off Nadal in the finals.. Beat Murray two times in finals at the Aussie and Wimbledon. Roddick is in the HOF and he smoked his ass in numerous finals. BTW who did Pete have as major competition in his era? The best guy was Agassi. Agassi for all his talent, spent more time eating hamburgers, doing drugs, and dating celebs than playing tennis for most of his 20's..

That is why you lose the argument. You have not made an argument. You keep saying "He choked" but provide no context or examples to prove that to be true. He won 5 US Opens and 20 GS titles. So when you say "The era is weak", and I ask you for historical context to prove that point, which is how you evaluate all athletes historically in sports, You should have something to add if the point is valid.. You don't..

Novak has won majors with Fed being older, and Nadal being injured. Same deal.. He ain't winning 16 with Fed and Nadal all at their best for a whole career.. Compare Fed's whole era to other all time greats players. And tell me where his was so weak in comparison? Pete has 14 majors. He's coming for Fed, and he's getting some separation from Djoker. When you consider he's guaranteed to win the French every year, he's probably good for 3 more of those. And with today's win, he also won the most US Opens of this decade with 4 (Djoker had 3).

We will see.. The young guys are finally coming. It started towards the end of last year with Medvedev at the US Open.. Thiem played extremely well the best he ever did on hard courts in a slam. Was up 2-1 in this match today.. Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Zverev who also played well at the Aussie Open are coming. It Is going to be a fascinating season this year.. Thiem will he be able to finally win the French after 2 years in a row losing in the finals to Nadal? He should take this momentum and roll with it to the clay court season. Rafa will tie Fed at 20 with a French Open win this year. Can Roger win 1 more which would have to come at Wimbledon IMO? Should be very interesting this year..

I agree that Thiem, Medvdec and Zverev are looking really good. But I still think they are two years away from being at a point where Djokovic will constantly be denied by them. Thiem looks the most promising to me.
Federer is old and broken down. After choking wimbledon badly, he crashed and burned in the quarter finals of the US Open. He also was extremely lucky to get past Milman and Tennys. He was very fortunate to be in the semi finals but props to him for fighting off those match points in the two previous rounds.
I think Federer has too much of a mental road block against Djokovic and Nadal. I'd be very stunned if he wins another slam, but who knows. If he can say healthy he can still be a pain to deal with.
Nadal probably has the french wrapped up this year, but I'd favor Novak in the three other slams. It's just frustrating when Novak goes though the motions for a set or two like he's sleep walking but his mental resolve is one of the greatest in sports history. Hopefully he can keep it up, but the gap is definitely closing with the next gen and the current gen.

Tsitsipas who choked his ass off BTW, is NOT some fellow countrymen the fans were cheering for today at the French.. He is a young Greek Tennis Player trying to win his first Major, and the fans were rooting for anything positive Tsitsipas was doing, hoping he would pull it out. He might win the slam this year he’s going to be a big favorite at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Even though you have some of these young guys starting to play great tennis they still aren’t knocking down the door. Stefanos really choked today badly. That was embarrassing to watch. I honestly think Djokvoic might be the most underrated athlete of all time. I understood early in his career with too many medical timeouts grating on people but the fact that this far into his career he’s still booed 95% of the time is insane. Such a shame for the GOAT

1000% more mentally tough than Nadal. Even nadal knows it, Djokovic owns him and even came back from a 5-0 first set deficit to crush Nadal. Statistically no one has had more comebacks than Djokovic. Nadal has never even been in a position for a calendar slam.

No fn way.
Nadal is NOT the Nadal of old. You cant see this? He has the desire, he does not have the ability. Either does Federer. Djokovic is a fantastic tennis player but the wins now are definitely EASIER because 2 of the big 3 are in free fall. Nadal will never win Wimbledon again, never. He still has a chance in the French if things go right. Federer will never win the French open again or the US open again (possibly no major again, his court coverage is gone). Even if Joker is NOT in these tournaments. They are in decline. Its called age. ANd for Nadal, horrible strokes to last a lifetime. Joker still has mental issues and it showed up in his inability in the Olympics and the US open. He is clearly better at controlling himself, but STRAIGHT SETS? Thats a joke. With the German choking the last set and Djokovic flat out had no response as he had already given up. This was absolutely obvious. Im not arguing about his place in history. Im arguing about his will. Its better, but its still not Nadal level. And this is getting closer to the end of Prime Time for Djokovic. Another bad injury and... he goes away better, but not unlike Sampras. Sampras finished on top. Others will come.

Djokovic was down 2 sets constantly, and still fought back everytime. This is a guy who fend of double championship point to Federer as well as multiple match points in 2010 and 2011 to an in prime federer. No tennis player in history has the mental fortitude that djokovic had. Because he lost to zverev and Medvedev doesnt mean he is all of a sudden mentally weak. He just came back to beat zverev a few months after the Olympics being two sets down.
Its absolute bs to say nadal is trying despite being injured when Djokovic completely turned the tables on nadal on nadals best service. Historically Djokovic is the mentally toughest player in tennis history. Has had far more match turnaround than nadal. Id put nadal second all time for mental toughness and just because he didnt make all time history this calendar year doesnt change that.
And Djokovic has annihilated nadal in straight sets like the Austrian open. Nadal also blew a 5-0 lead and momentum to Djokovic just this year. To keep crying about straight sets as though Djokovic didnt play 6 more hours of tennis than Medvedev is insane. Djokovic is getting older too but takes care of himself better than nadal. Hes far hungrier than nadal too. Nadal even said as much when saying getting the all time slam count means more to Djokovic than it does to nadal.
Mentally its Djokovic all day. Medvedev is number two on the world and played phenomenally well. But its weak to use excuses everytime for nadal but when its Djokovic its down to being mentally weak. Everyone and their mother knows Djokovic is the mentally toughest tennis player in history

He is better. But no way can you discount his temper tantrums and early meltdowns that cost one of the most gifted athletes ever in the sport.
Of course the slam means more to Djokovic. Because he and he alone has the physical ability to get it NOW. Nadal does not. So that statement is totally irrelevant.
I will take Nadal every day of the week in a mental matchup with any player in history. And I dont really even like the guy... constantly picking at his butt.

Bs what a moronic take, so when nadal chokes badly on his favorite surface it is down to injuries but when Djokovic loses to an opponent while Novak has played six (!) more hours of tennis then it’s down to Novak choking? Nadal has choked a lot to Djokovic, Djokovic has annihilated where was this elite nadal mentality then? Watch more tennis, as the iconic comeback moments from Djokovic career wise FAR outshines nadal. Using a loss to the world #2 while nadal gets knocked out slam after slam to players inferior to him outside of Djokovic in recent years. But I’m sure you’ll have an excuse for nadal as well despite Djokovic owning him

You totally are getting mixed up between mental toughness of an inferior athlete and a fantastic athlete who is also a great tennis player.
You are the one who does not know this game. Djokovic is YOUNGER, and got more control over his game mentally while his major competitors, Nadal and Federer, are on their way out. Djokovic was the guy that SHOULD beat these guys because he IS a better athlete, even better than Federer during his prime. Djokovic moves better imo. I believe Federer was the pinnacle of the beautifully efficient Tennis stroke. NOW Djokovic is beating these guys (so are a lot of other players) while totally dropping the ball on what would have been one of the greatest feats in Tennis.
You dont get it.
Who surrounds you makes you great. Djokovic has gotten past the point of these guys being able to beat him. They are just not good enough, they are way past prime. So a German kid slaughters him in Straight SETS and he gives up? Thats not the model.

You use the younger argument for nadal and Federer despite only 2 years difference between nadal and Djokovic but when a much younger zverev beats Djokovic it men as Djokovic is weak? The same zverev who
Also beat nadal twice in the last 2 years? Its absolute bs, Djokovic mentality has always been FAR better than nadals and the h2h and number of epic comebacks Djokovic has had in comparison to nadal seals it.
And Federer had weak competition from 2004-2006 and nadal won 75% of his GS slams on one surface where Djokovic beat him twice on. Hell, nadal choked a 5-0 lead in his favorite surface to Djokovic.
Literally every clutch metric favours Djokovic over nadal, but yes, loving to zverev therefore means Djokovics superb mentality over his entire career is done for despite being the GOAT mentality and in regards to skill. Yeah, okay :tu

Pete Sampras: “I do think what Novak’s done over the past 10 years, winning the majors, being consistent, finishing No. 1 for seven years, to me it’s a clear sign that he is the greatest of all time.”
News
Sampras’ involvement with the sport today consists of watching televised matches and rallying with his 16-year-old son, Ryan Nikolaos.
“For fun,” Sampras said. “I still enjoy hitting tennis balls. But it comes down to the movement and serving, the body doesn’t quite want to do it.”
He believes Djokovic will wind up with the most majors. That Djokovic came within one win of a Grand Slam – in this age of the Internet, with social media pressure and global coverage – impressed Sampras deeply.
“Seven years, for him, I’m sure he sees it as a bonus to all the majors that he’s won,” Sampras said. “But I think he’ll appreciate it more as he gets older. He did it at a time where he dominated two of the greats, in Roger and Rafa, and he handled the next generation of players very well – all at the same time.
“I do think what Novak’s done over the past 10 years, winning the majors, being consistent, finishing No. 1 for seven years, to me it’s a clear sign that he is the greatest of all time.”

I want Djokovic AND Federer to beat Nadal every time they play. I believe they are/were both better players.
I respect Nadal, but dont think he is a gifted. He is the toughest competitor since Jimmy Connors (probably the least talented guy to win a number of majors).
btw I just looked at when Borg quit. AT 24. He won 5 Wimbledon's in a row and numerous French Opens and Australian Opens. Never the US open because he claimed the lights played hell on his eyes.
So if you wanted to use some magic potion on Borg way back when burn out was a problem, Borg very well could have played the best tennis (given the equipment) we have ever seen.

I thought the Russian lost it because he likes pissing off the crowd and the crowd definitely got to him.
Nadal is just mentally on another level. No way he should win that tournament. That kid is a better player right now.
Djokovic would have destroyed him on that surface. Also, if it would have been really hot, and Novaxx would have actually cared about his profession, he would have cruised in this tourney.

Amazing from Rafa, he looked dead tired and pulled it off. He should be the favourite for #22 at the French.

Rafa has a huge fanbase due to his will to try and win. He is/was the greatest player on clay, a surface that begs for excruciatingly long rallies and he just owns it.
But imo he is just not as talented as Novaxx or Federer in his day. The later two players make tennis look easy. Rafa makes it look like pure hell. And his body has paid for his inefficient strokes. But my God he is a fighter. Maximum tough. Btw he looked very bulked up for the Australian… along with losing hair in patches bigly… roidal… hints of roidal. But maybe not.

Fucking Rafa man... Dude's mental fortitude is on a different stratosphere when compared to Fed's. And I say this as a Fed stan.
He is relentless.
Like I said before I dont think he is the most talented, but on the clay, it plays right into his strength of winning long mentally taxing rallies.
This being said, time, along with wear and tear of his strokes, can get him beat on his best surface. Looks like hes healthy. Its tenuous though.
If hes healthy, he is totally unfazed and just seems like losing does not ever enter his mind; as long as he is standing. He seems to always believe if the matches keep going he will eventually win. Somewhat like his favorite football team did this year in the CL.
These kind of players I wonder how comfortable they are after it all ends. When they dont grind through huge exertions anymore after so many tournaments. These individual sports are a different beast.

Nadal has to be considered the most difficult opponent of all time.
I still have a hard time with calling him the best of all time considering what Borg did and then quit so early.
The supposed comeback was so half hearted. Borg definitely the quickest of all.
It so hard to compare when the rackets changed so much.
Sampras just getting bored and really never changing his game to meet some particular challenge.
Even McEnroe not having a sports psychologist work with him. He needed someone to calm him the fk down. McEnroe, with those crappy rackets, could put his serve where ever he wanted and at whatever speed the racket was capable of. The volleying of McEnroe and the touch was other worldly.
Very difficult. There is no Jordan imo.
Maybe Joker regains his sanity. I have a feeling that other kid from Spain might be the next dominant player. Give him two years.

The clay to grass switch is incredibly tough.
The number one seed lady got beaten.
If Nadal takes this one it will sort of be by attrition. But it will also be because he is by far the greatest on clay and can adapt.
Grass really should not fit his game at all. Borg won Wimbledon 5 times in a row, and the French Open 4 times in a row.
For such a short career.... holy shit... And I say short because he tried a comeback and it was useless. He wanted nothing to do with Tennis.
If Borg had his athleticism and Nadal's head...

Look at Borg 1976-81
And then he retired.
My God.
Your list is where I understood how good this guy was. No US open Championships because he was horrible at night. He could not see. The later stages of the US open were played at night.
If you watch old you tubes of him its clear to me he is most likely the quickest tennis player ever. His side to side movement was other worldly.
He would have made a fantastic short stop in baseball.
Borg's retirement crushed McEnroe. McEnroe stated Borg was so good he got severely depressed about not being able to play him. It gave McEnroe what he thought was a real goal. But again, tennis was such a different sport back then. Borg had his rackets strung at such a high tension (to get pace on the ball) they would often just fold up on him.
Also Sampras basically called it quits because the faster surfaces were a bit too easy for him.
This is why it is possible sports psychologists might be important for individual sports. Its such a grind.
Oh. I found out some of the chess guys use psychologists. I just find it amazing. I would definitely burn out if I was actually that good at one thing.

Borg was brilliant. And it's hard to compare those guys with the current generation. Training, equipment, etc. I used to play tennis as a little kid and started off with a wood racquet, then aluminum. Then picked it up again in college as a rec class and had a wide body graphite (think it was graphite) racquet. Not withstanding the power gain, it was so damn easy to use.
