Bloomberg’s Billions Didn’t Just Build A Political Network. He Also Bought Silence.
When Mayor Bloomberg’s plans for New York City failed to gain popular support, his vast philanthropic network helped gin up the illusion.
At the height of the Great Recession,
with the number of homeless people approaching record highs,
the city had quietly begun charging rent (https://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/09/nyregion/09shelters.html) from working families living in its rundown shelters.
But almost immediately, reliable allies in the nonprofit world declined to take a public stand against Mayor Bloomberg,
for fear of alienating their most important donor: Mayor Bloomberg.
Bloomberg was simultaneously the city’s top elected official and its most outsized philanthropist.
Over more than a decade, his sprawling philanthropic network
gave away approximately $3 billion,
leaving almost no one in civic life who didn’t rely in ways large or small on his continued generosity.
“We would find it very hard at times to get these other groups to stand up with us,” Markee recalled in a recent interview.
“When we were doing a press conference in front of City Hall, or engaged in a legal action, or whether we were doing rallies,
I talked to my colleagues and pretty frankly they would say,
‘Look, we agree with you, we’re on your side. But he’s a critical donor. We can’t afford to lose that kind of money.’”
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/mike-bloomberg-philanthropy-silence_n_5e4c23fbc5b65f25da502fa5?ncid=newsltushp mgnews (https://www.huffpost.com/entry/mike-bloomberg-philanthropy-silence_n_5e4c23fbc5b65f25da502fa5?ncid=newsltushp mgnews)
This is how the oligarchy wins, eg, Kock Bros, Sacklers, Trash, give money, the expect silence and/or favors in return, esp to cover their crimes.

"Ninety-five percent of your murders — murderers and murder victims — fit one M.O. You can just take the description, Xerox it and pass it out to all the cops.
They are male, minorities, 16 to 25.
That’s true in New York, that’s true in virtually every city.
And that’s where the real crime is. …
You want to spend the money, put a lot of cops in the streets.
Put the cops where the crime is, which means minority neighborhoods.
And the way you get the guns out of the kids’ hands is to throw them up against the wall and frisk them."
"Taxes are regressive, yes they are.
That’s the good thing about them because
the problem is in people that don’t have a lot of money and
so higher taxes should have a bigger impact on their behavior and
how they deal with themselves.
So I listen to people saying, ‘Oh we don’t want to tax the poor.’
Well, we want the poor to live longer so that they can get an education and enjoy life. :lol
And that’s why you do want to do exactly what a lot of people say you don’t want to do….
If you raise taxes on full sugary drinks, for example, they will drink less and there’s no question that full sugared drinks are one of the major factors in obesity and obesity is one of the major factors to heart disease."
instructive about his attitude toward low-income people.
A multibillionaire’s opinion of those on the bottom rung of society is — unsurprisingly — utterly distorted by his obscene wealth.
Bloomberg’s immense wealth allows him to
bypass the traditional reins of accountability
that the public has over a candidate running for election.
Bloomberg doesn’t need the public to donate to his campaign, and
therefore there is no guarantee that as president he would care about serving the public.
https://www.truthdig.com/articles/panicked-over-sanders-elites-turn-to-bloomberg/ (https://www.truthdig.com/articles/panicked-over-sanders-elites-turn-to-bloomberg/)
An oligarch taxing sugary drinks penalizes the drinkers, but leaves untouched the BigFood producers of sugary shit.

Trump was horrible in debates. But it did not matter by voting time.
These two idiots are the same people except one is excessively rich and tends to keep away from over 3000 law suits. Oh, the other is president, and the worst example of what we need as a leader.

Exactly, Bloom needed to make it more a comedic hit & let (us) judge it otherwise, but, he's impatient & bored out of his mind. & Warren hit him again for it...something to the effect:::"He'll be fine once he gets back outside and can spend $100 million on swag."

it was weak. he even played the "communism" card which the audience didnt care for, and quite frankly, was moronic
the "millionaire with 3 houses" line was a solid quip but ultimately lacks substance, as sanders has never said he is against people making money and enjoying it.

but it doesnt explain why he's so strongly anti-bernie if it's purely about ego. you dont really see him railing on anybody else to nearly the same degree
and i dont think i meant he's afraid that he's going to go broke (its a stupid fear for billionaires that taxes are going to take away their standard of living)... but rather than sanders' election would be a rebuke of "the billionaire" and it's somewhat personal for him. its not his bank account thats really in jeopardy, its a legacy thing. his way of life is being called into question

Bloomberg doesn't care who's rebuking him if he's getting his. Like you say, he'd just support Trump or Buttplug or whomever if that was a paramount concern. Yeah I actually agree here, this is definitely his primary motivation with stopping Bernie/Warren as the 2nd fiddle reason. He clearly has this grossly inflated view of himself where HE’S the guy who can beat Trump despite the fact he’s getting fucked in every hole during the Nevada caucus debate. republicans like him for obvious reasons. it would be like joe manchin changing parties and then running for president as a republican. i'm sure democrats would love that, because it creates a pretty optimal "worst case scenario"
as for why he polls well... its sad to say, but ads work. not everybody reads up on politics daily and are that invested in it.
purely anecdotal, but my sister is among those. she doesnt follow politicals news, but generally identifies as liberal because she aligns that way on the basic social issues (abortion, gay marriage, gun control). her husband, my bro in law, is very passionate about this stuff and keeps up as much if not more than i do. definitely more well read, generally. was talking to him the other day and he said they both early voted (CA). he sent his ballot in for sanders, with my sister voting for steyer. i started laughing and asked why. he said "she said i dont know, i kinda like his commercials"
was funny/sad but realistically reflects more voters than we'd like to think
