Your math is incorrect. Every covid fatality you are trying to cite is
1. Not caused by covid
2. Not an excess death

1. I have. The avg covid related fatality has over 2.5 comorbidities. Per the cdc.

2. Already shown monthly. End of year will show yearly excess death comparison.

Vanderbilt said per SEC COVID-19 management guidelines (https://www.secsports.com/article/28925379/sec-member-institutions-monitor-covid-19), a minimum of 53 scholarship student-athletes must be available to participate.

Vanderbilt said there's a shortage of these student-athletes due to "the quarantining of individuals with positive tests and those designated as close contacts, along with injuries and opt-outs."

On Monday, Baylor reported 32 student-athletes are currently positive for COVID-19 with 29 new cases since last week. Twenty-nine cases are symptomatic while three are asymptomatic.

Among those positive cases are 28 football players. Additionally, 14 Baylor football staff members have tested positive, but a source said head coach Dave Aranda isn’t among the positive cases.

Not really an answer.

Rare things still happen. One in a hundred thousand will still mean thousands of kids will need ventilators, if all 30M of them get sick, and many many more times that will have all sorts of nasty organ damage, up to and including neurological problems that will haunt them, possibily for hte rest of their lives.

Economically, that is a huge amount of damage, because you are talking about degradation over a 60 to 70 year span.

Until there is a vaccine there is a pretty huge price to pay.

Jesus. This is stupidity

Basically, there is no strong evidence to support well people wearing surgical masks in public. Or as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put it: "No recommendation can be made at this time for mask use in the community by asymptomatic persons, including those at high risk for complications, to prevent exposure to influenza viruses."

The best thing you can do to stop getting the flu is to regularly wash your hands, and try to avoid touching your face.

These discussions are worth having. We should continuously weigh the costs and benefits of shutting down vs. opening up, and approach those reopenings and shutdowns on a case-by-case basis. Just because it makes sense to open up a school, doesn't mean it makes sense to open up bars, restaurants, and indoor dining.

That said, we FUCKED OURSELVES here early on. We should've went with a hard nationwide lock-down in March of all but essential businesses. Europe did just that, and have flattened like no one's business. Example. The horror story that was Italy is at 13 deaths/7 day average at day 126. We are at 511 and just had the highest daily death count we've had in nearly a month.

And I solely blame fucks in that "Team Reality" contingent (Ginn, Berenson, Levitt, Ethical Skeptic, etc). The misinformation they've been spinning has been near criminal. The virus doesn't have a natural fuckin' bell curve progression. See Iran's double hump.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/iran/

That's not a second wave, either. They got overconfident during the period where they cut their death toll down and are now seeing the results of it.

https://www.bbc.com/news/52959756

The lockdowns have not contributed to more "deaths" than the virus, as those idiots kept claiming it would.

https://i.imgur.com/xN3TmZu.png

That whole bunch of gray is the excess deaths attributed to Covid. The beige is excess deaths not attributed to Covid, Flu, or Pneumonia. If "the cure was worse than the disease," we see much more non-Covid deaths than Covid deaths. And yes, I know the "cure is worse than the disease" logic is looking at the long term ramifications of lockdowns, but IF we locked down hard in March, we would've flattened the spread as Europe has while also mitigating the long term effects of long shutdowns. This is a concept "Team Reality" led by that fuck Berenson didn't and still don't understand.

All reports are the FL, TX, AZ ICUs are filling up rapidly. I'm sure Team Reality will spin a few graphs for us, but word from the frontlines of the healthcare workers say they are strained. And the once lax politicians of those states are basically in panic, with Abbott throwing local leaders under the bus for supposedly doing "nothing." DeSantis extending the state of emergency of Florida. And AZ just being a clusterfuck all around. California is also not trending positively. Our positive rate is only 8 percent on new tests (vs. 33% in AZ, which is terribad), but can't overlook exponential growth.

Jump to July, when cases of COVID-19 are spiking, putting Israel high on the list of countries who’ve lost control of the virus’ contagion; the economy is cratering, with unemployment at about 23 percent, and the new government is on the verge of collapse.

What happened?

If you ask Dr. Siegal Sadetzki, the head of the nation’s public health service, who served as an Israeli Dr. Anthony Fauci for the past six months and quit her job on Tuesday, the government “has lost its compass.”

“Israel is heading to a dangerous place,” she wrote in an 8,000-word indictment of the government’s failure to prepare in any way for a resurgence of illness.

“Despite systematic and repeated warnings through various channels, and discussions in several forums, we are watching with frustration as the hourglass of opportunities runs low,” she warned.

“I have come to the conclusion that in the newly created conditions under which my professional opinion is not accepted—I can no longer help to effectively cope with the spread of the virus.”

All this may sound familiar to Americans in the many states where the virus infections are now spiking. But … it gets worse.

During the six wasted weeks, the period singled out by Sadetzki, schools were chaotically reopened and then, as infections soared, re-shuttered. Parents were unable to foresee reentering the workforce. The public was instructed to wear masks—but no system of enforcement was put into place. The lists of permitted and prohibited activities shifted daily, with little or no explanation. While Netanyahu actively pursued his (since scuttled) dream of annexing significant parts of the occupied West Bank, the number of Israelis diagnosed with COVID-19 multiplied by 499 percent.

Ashdod, a city on the Mediterranean coast, emerged as a top locus of infection, but no Israeli official could explain why the breezy, fun beach town, where citizens live outdoors during the summer, gained almost 700 COVID-19 patients during the month of June.

Criticizing the government’s “hesitant response,” Ran Balicer, a professor of public health and a member of Israel’s national Epidemic Management Team, said in an interview that “no place on earth has seen a spike in morbidity [the disease rate] like Israel’s."

Tuesday was Israel’s worst day of contagion, with 1,400 new cases of COVID-19 announced, a record since the start of the outbreak.

Event spaces, bars, and gyms have been re-shut but instructions regarding public transportation remain unclear, and the transport and finance ministers squabble on the airwaves.

On Tuesday, in testimony to the Israeli parliament, Dr. Udi Kliner, Sadetzki’s deputy, reported that schools—not restaurants or gyms—turned out to be the country’s worst mega-infectors.

It’s a pretty scary thought going back to the classroom here in Houston. Cases have been spiking like crazy and all it takes is one person to spread it like wildfire. A lot of people are retiring now because of this. It’s already a pretty shitty job, now you have to risk your life or loved ones life for it? Not exactly enticing

“Hey you’re gonna get cussed out, have no funding, no real support from administrators, 230 kids to teach, no real team to help you, an all Sped/ESL class, deal with the STAAR bullshit, AND now you could get infected with Corona and lose your life.” :lol tempting

Sweden and finland study.

Closure of schools had no measurable impact on cases in students.

Older Children Spread the Coronavirus Just as Much as Adults, Large Study Finds

The study of nearly 65,000 people in South Korea suggests that school reopenings will trigger more outbreaks.

Children younger than 10 transmit to others much less often than adults do, but the risk is not zero.

And those between the ages of 10 and 19 can spread the virus at least as well as adults do.

The findings suggest that as schools reopen, communities will see clusters of infection take root that include children of all ages, several experts cautioned.

“I fear that there has been this sense that kids just won’t get infected or don’t get infected in the same way as adults and that, therefore, they’re almost like a bubbled population,”

Children under 10 were roughly half as likely as adults to spread the virus to others, consistent with other studies.

That may be because children generally exhale less air — and therefore less virus-laden air — or because they exhale that air closer to the ground, making it less likely that adults would breathe it in.

Children under 10 were roughly half as likely as adults to spread the virus to others, consistent with other studies

the large number of contacts for schoolchildren, who interact with dozens of others for a good part of the day, may cancel out their smaller risk of infecting others.

Where I might want to pump the breaks on sending children back to school full stop is the possibility of long terms effects from even asymptomatic infections in adults. In recovered "mild cases," we're finding issues like reduced lung capacity, congestive heart failure (which is when your left ventricle falls below 50 percent ejection), and cognitive issues.

There need to be a study done ASAP of a large sample size of children and teens who've recovered from the virus to see the prevalence and severity of lingering effects.

Teachers sue Florida governor for order to reopen schools in defiance of ‘basic human needs for health and safety’

Teachers in Florida—where coronavirus cases continue to surge—filed a lawsuit on Monday to block a state-ordered physical reopening of schools in August, saying,

“There is no rational basis for ignoring science and evidence-based data.”

Eyup.

I do think they need to get back into school ASAP. The problem with that though is that in the middle of a hotzone outbreak, it is simply too risky. If you can get your case count under control, and everybody being halfway responsible outside of school, then yeah, send them back.

Seems to be a lot safer for little kids, not so much adolescents. WIth some solid risk mitigation it can probably be done for both groups, but you will have to be a lot more careful with the older kids, and their teachers.

As I have noted before, I am not against schools opening per se. There are very good arguments for getting them back in.

BUT

You need some solid risk mitigation strategies. I am somewhat doubtful teenagers will have enough mask discipline to make that work, but the longer they stay closed the greater the harm.

Get control of the virus, and open the schools, especially for younger kids. Have a plan to protect the adults that work there.

Few Republican governors have acted in a responsible fashion though, to get the virus under control, and many are actively fighting measures that localities have implemented that would do something.

(shrugs) They will have to answer to voters as this drags on, and they keep ignoring the science for the sake of fucktarded identity politics.

This entire episode simply demonstrates in a very concrete way why Republicans can't really be trusted with governments. Its like handing car keys to drunks.

Lung damage, kidney damage, DVTs +strokes have been observed during the course of illness in otherwise healthy people. Kawasaki-like inflammatory illness in children also seems to be correlelated with COVID-19.

It may be awhile before the causal pathways are determined -- or ruled out -- but the trend is worrisome.

What a stupid goalpost move.

You want to wait until after schools are open for a study of the currently exploding numbers in Texas day care centers to be published.

Being disingenuous is required for being a QAnon/Pizzagate/Trump supporter.

Who knows? All I know is they did shut schools down because of COVID transmissions traced to the schools later in May.

Also in France on May 5 the seven day rolling average of new infections per capita was many lower than that of Texas today.

Jennifer Cabrera did some good work.

The presentation of the data by showing the date of the change and mapping that to the date of death was good.

It would be useful to get a sense of the average delay in tallying a death to a particular day. We use estimates like that in insurance when we estimate development for reporting years. "in the first year the data is generally 90% complete, second year 95%, third year 99%", so we can estimate reserves.

if you know what the reporting lag/development is, you can factor that into the data and get a reasonably good estimate as to what the actual count is going to be a lot quicker.

Children get the disease. That makes them a "vector", since it spreads at the very least through aerosols, if not straight airborne.

Viruses reproduce in any human, and spread. Not sure why this is a difficult concept for you, but then again, you lick Trumps boots, so that indicates an ability to grasp basic concepts common to normal humans.

For them not to be a vector, you would have to prove that the version of the virus that children get is different than that of adults, or that this virus magically does not reproduce itself in children. Given that they do get sick, this is a heavy burden on your part. Have at it, boot licker.
