GOAT of the Past/Present, vs. GOAT of the Future... for all the marbles, down in Tampa. Who wins it all?!????!?

I would be happy for both, quite frankly and don't have a particular rooting interest at this point, now that the team(s) I hate are eliminated and it's down to these two.

Who wins it all? :lobt:

I'd personally be OK with either team winning. I actually like both QBs. Smugface Rodgers is out + the annoying obnoxious cheesehead fans are out = I'm good.

:lol Rockets. Harden and Paul would've found a way to choke regardless of who they played.
Exactly. I think Utah Jazz with Malone and Stockton is a better example.

Prepare for a decade of contention son.
But it'll likely take a Mahomes injury at the right time (or a one-off season ending injury like the one Brady had in '08) for the Bills to actually make the Super Bowl. They play in the conference with the perennially better QBs (though the NFC has generally better defenses and running games).

NFC has the GOAT this year though.

Official prediction:

Bucs 37
Chiefs 34

Final - OT.

MVP - Tom Brady with 3 TD, 1 INT, 300+ yards passing.

Yes. Agree 100% with your post. Personally, I like both Mahomes and Brady. Brady's youtube highlight hooked me to watch football and I'm New England fan ever since. Meanwhile Mahomes is arguably the most talented and entertaining athlete I've ever seen. I watch every single KC's game. Mahomes is must-see tv. No matter the outcome, I simply can't lose. Either Brady wins 7th and becomes more accomplished athlete than Jordan, or Mahomes wins 2nd and becomes clear goat candidate.

Outcome? I don't know. KC has weak oline and Bucs pass-rush destroyed Packers strong oline. But Mahomes is more mobile than Rodgers right now and Mahomes is also better thrower of the football under pressure. Bucs offense is strong but not that intimidating. KC has average defense, but this defense was pretty good in the playoffs.

Tampa is more balanced team with better defense and Mahomes is slightly hobbled. But in the end, I think KC will outscore the Bucs, even if Mahomes isn't 100% healthy

Rodgers had some brilliant throws under pressure too. Rodgers also has equal or better mobility than a hobbled Mahomes with a coach that doesn't like to risk him too much.

However Rodgers pussied out of running for the game-tying touchdown when he had a ton of space to his two o'clock with only 8 yards to go. That's why he's not the MVP IMO despite his 48 TD / 5 INT season. Great numbers on paper but small time when it counts.

I think Rodgers is much less athletic than he was in 2016 for example. I feel like even hobbled Mahomes is faster at this point. But I'm not sure

This will be key. Reid needs to come up with a game plan to minimize TB's biggest strength: their D-line. Between that widely lopsided matchup and Lucky Tom's seemingly endless fortune, I can smell the upset from a mile away.

From an interest standpoint, it's about as good as it gets. Young Pat Mahomes against the old GOAT. Plenty of offensive talent on both sides of the field.
Imo, it all comes down to defense. If the Bucs can get some stops, I think they win.

100% Agreed. Neither offensive line is really elite (example of elite O-Lines: 2017 Eagles Super Bowl, 2014-2016 Cowboys, 2014 Packers, 2020 Packers before Bakhtiari's injury) but TB's is far better than KC's. Bucs will get some stops in the second half, like they did last game and in their first meeting, even if the Chiefs jump on them early. The Chiefs have the tendency to get figured out on offense in second halves of games this year. It will bite them in the end.

Even Atlanta "figured them out" in the second half of that game the Chiefs needed to clinch the conference regular season title, tbh. Yes, the same Atlanta defense that gave up 400 second half yards to Dak Prescott in the same season.

Plus, a "home" game for TB. Should be a good game. I just can't see the Chiefs stopping TB more than TB stops the Chiefs. Brady seems to be in a groove and they've got good to great WR from 1 to 4. Then pretty good TE with Brate and Gronk. Neither team has a great running game but I'd have to give the edge to TB there as well.

https://www.mercurynews.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/20160812__BROBBINS1.jpg?w=620

In the 2002 NFL season (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_NFL_season) with Bill Callahan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Callahan_(American_football)) in his first year as head coach, Robbins rebounded strongly by starting all 16 regular season games and making the Pro Bowl (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pro_Bowl). Oakland won the AFC west for the third straight year, with an 11–5 record, scoring 450 points (28.1 points/game), 2nd of 32 teams in the NFL. In the 2002–03 NFL playoffs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002%E2%80%9303_NFL_playoffs), the Raiders defeated the New York Jets (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Jets) again with 399 total yards, with an offensive line composed of Robbins, Frank Middleton (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Middleton) and Mo Collins (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mo_Collins_(American_Football)&action=edit&redlink=1) at guard, Barry Sims (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Sims) and Lincoln Kennedy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_Kennedy) at tackle. The Raiders then beat with the same offensive line the Tennessee Titans (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennessee_Titans) in the AFC championship game, gaining 375 total yards.
Then, inexplicably, the day before Super Bowl XXXVII (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XXXVII), Robbins was reported as missing for most of the day before the game after not taking his depression (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depression_(mood)) medication. When he resurfaced that night, he was so incoherent that he didn't even know where he was.[2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barret_Robbins#cite_note-WaPoDismiss-2) According to one of his teammates, Robbins didn't even recognize Callahan. Despite this, Al Davis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Davis) still wanted Robbins in the game, and development coach Willie Brown (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willie_Brown_(American_football)) had Robbins running sprints in the parking lot on the morning of the game to see if he could still play.[3] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barret_Robbins#cite_note-3)
Callahan had initially intended to let Robbins play, but not start. However, he ultimately decided to suspend Robbins for the game after concluding that he was not fit to take the field at all. He initially wanted to fly Robbins back to Oakland, but was unable to get him a plane ticket because he was missing his wallet and identification.[2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barret_Robbins#cite_note-WaPoDismiss-2) He spent 30 days at the Betty Ford Center (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betty_Ford_Center), during which time he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipolar_disorder) (or manic-depressive disorder). He'd been diagnosed with depression while at TCU, but it is common for the two to be confused in the early stages. It turned out that he had gone into a manic episode after not taking his medication. According to his wife, Robbins spent most of the day before the Super Bowl partying across the border in Tijuana (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tijuana), Mexico (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico); he had thought the Raiders already won the game and he was celebrating their "victory."[4] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barret_Robbins#cite_note-Knapp-4) With Adam Treu (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Treu) as the starting center, the Raiders were blown out in an ugly loss in the Super Bowl to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tampa_Bay_Buccaneers), 48–21.

To be fair I thought the Raiders 2001 team was a little better, even despite a worse record and a poor showing in December, 01. Should have been the Super Bowl champions that year IMO and trading Gruden was the weirdest trade in sports history.

was a great trade for the raiders but they didnt do shit with the draft picks. used the 2 first rounders on Phillip Buchanon and Tyler Brayton

buchanon wasn't bad. he was explosive, a big play guy, but ultimately pretty volatile, kinda like a worse marcus peters. but only lasted a few years on the team

first team all pro goes missing right before the superbowl against one of the stacked defenses in NFL history

I've watched a couple of videos on this. Apparently Callahan had planned to go 'run-heavy' all week leading up to the Super Bowl. This made sense considering the massive size advantage their offensive line had over the small, but quick Tampa D-line. However, the Friday before he decided to ditch that plan at the last minute in favor of a pass-heavy offense. This decision led to a few conspiracy theories. There was some speculation that this last-minute change caused Robbins to go over the edge and triggered his manic episode. Other Raider players even went as far as to say that Callahan intentionally tanked the Super Bowl so that his buddy Gruden would win. This seems ludicrous to me. Intentionally tanking a Super Bowl, which would essentially guarantee you an NFL job for life if it was on your resume. But even when guys like Jerry Rice say that it was likely he tanked, it's hard to outright dismiss it.

IMO, this was one of the most interesting Super Bowls in NFL history considering all the storylines despite the fact that the game itself was forgettable.

I do remember hearing of this massive strategy overhaul late in the SB week. Great case of circumstance as what if the game isn't played in Southern California allowing Robbins to cross the border and pound margaritas (and Latinas?) :lol

Obviously 18 years ago the media coverage was not as immense. But this was 4 years after Eugene Robinson in Miami. Indeed the games were usually blowouts at that time but some great story lines!

Probably a hold but that’s not some obvious call the refs missed. Holding is the most missed call in the NFL. I would have much rather seen Jimmy Wop win last year but I don’t think you can blame them losing on the refs not calling every single holding penalty.

yeah, and if they just kicked the XPs, they would have been within 10 in the 4th with over 6 minutes to go, against a tampa offense that completely puttered out. that could have changed their approach drastically late in the game.

small rumbles about the raiders making a move... but as has been the case since gruden took over, the whole "raiders want to move on from carr" narrative has been entirely media driven, and doesnt seem to reflect what gruden actually thinks

but per the Las Vegas Review Journal, there are teams that are expected to try to trade for Carr (teams like the Colts or WFT who dont really have the assets to get watson). and then depending on how much compensation the raiders can get, they would pull the trigger if they can get enough capital to trade for watson. so would effectively be a 3 team deal, even if executed separately.

eg, if the raiders can get a 1 and a 2/3 for carr, they flip both of those, and 2 first rounders of their own for watson

i would think you kind of have to make that move to land a top 5 QB at age 25... but i dont even think the move would really pay dividends for at least a few years. the raiders didnt miss the playoffs because of their QB play, and by trading all that for watson, you're really just hampering your ability to improve the defense, which really is the raiders' limiting factor right now.

but imo, most likely result is that the raiders hang onto carr. gruden likes him, and it would be bizarre to choose to move on from him now after his best season. i'd rather just see the raiders trade mariota for a day 2/3 pick, and use that capital to bolster the defense.
I'm not sure Watson is significantly better than Carr, except perhaps as a runner. Watson and Prescott both have quite a knack for piling up big stats when playing from way behind and then coming up just short at the end.

he's a much better talent overall. more aggressive downfield thrower too. would have some growing pains because gruden tends to emphasize more quick hitters, but Watson could unleash Ruggs and even Agholor a bit more.

carr might be better from 0-15 yards, but watson's big play ability + his mobility is something else.

Carr + Agholor was a pretty damn good combo last year. I thought Agholor was a complete dud because he sucked with Carson Wentz, but Carr brought out the best in him.

I think Ruggs is just another John Ross III (Bengals), he won't amount to much more than a gadget guy and an occasional deep threat like a Tavon Austin. Overdrafted tbh.

I don't know that it'd be that big adjustment. Watson threw a lot of quick hit plays when he had Hopkins. Comparing Carr's last two years to Hopkins prior to sans-Hopkins and they're not too far apart on Y/A.
Also, with a top level RB, Watson could have a nice uptick in rushing yards.

Really? Because I've seen Carr buy lots of time plenty of times. He's not like Watson in that he's not going to scramble 40 yards for a rushing touchdown, but he's more than capable of picking up the first with his legs on 3rd & medium, or scrambling around the periphery of the pocket to buy time for a guy like Waller to come open. I watched quite a few Raiders games last year. Carr isn't the problem.

That Raiders defense on the other hand......

Carr is fringe top 10... like any given year he can be somewhere between 10 and 18 or so. he was probably top 10 in 2020, which he hadnt been since 2016

with watson you know you're getting a top 5 guy for a decade.

Millennial_Messiah
02-03-2021, 05:17 PM
Now if you're talking about Aaron Rodgers to the Raiders then that's a whole different dynamic. You're talking about a transcendent QB who can take a terrible defense, mediocrely coached team to 13-3 and perennial contention as long as he's healthy.

Watson on the other hand? Good slate of receivers, good offense... terrible defense, bad coaching staff, 4-12. Not a transcendent QB. Watson and Carr are both solid QBs but winning with them requires a good overall team, you can't just have a trashy defense and OL and/or coaching staff and expect to win double digits and make the playoffs every year like a Brady/Mahomes/Rodgers.

Top 5 doesn't go 4-12 when healthy all 16 games, I don't care how bad his defense or coaching staff is. Transcendent QBs don't go 4-12 healthy regardless of the team around him. (And Watson had some damn good receivers in Houston, even without Dropkins.) Top 5 QBs are transcendent.

Mahomes has had one of the worst olines in the NFL all year, granted his WR/TE corps is elite, but the Chiefs defense is also suspect, good coach, above average special teams. But with Watson that would stack up to around 9-7. With Mahomes, 14-1 and two bye weeks.

You can't really "bank on a decade" with a guy who puts his body in jeopardy as much as a Watson/Jackson tbh.

Rodgers might not have Brady's longevity but he's smart AF and knows how not to get injured trying to compete for a critical first down, especially at this point in his career post-Anthony Barr collision

Watson or Prescott for a decade is fine but at Tier 2 salary, not Tier 1, because they are QBs you need the right parts around to win and contend for a SB. Not necessarily 2017 Eagles level roster where a Tier 3 QB could win a SB but at least ample, which the Raiders don't have especially on defense

1) Brady
2) Mahomes
3) Rodgers
4) Allen
5) Wilson

6-10 is really sketchy... that's where Tier 2 starts IMO. Big Ben, Lawrence, Stafford, Watson, Carr, Ryan, Mayfield, even Jackson all deserve consideration... but where? Not much separation there IMO. And Prescott isn't even Tier 2 until he proves it coming back from the broken leg.

Millennial_Messiah
02-03-2021, 05:36 PM
watson is more wilson than jackson

Maybe in 2020; I didn't catch much of Houston this past year because they sucked, and Watson didn't elevate them to wins like great QBs do. He lost all the close games which makes him a Tier 2 QB.

All I know is I remember Watson tearing his knee trying to make a play in mid 2017, being constantly hurt in 2018, getting poked in the eye trying to make a play in 2019 (against the Raiders!) and going 4-12 last year.

I don't care about how bad his D or HC were. I don't. Rodgers played with a suckass D and fat mike for a decade and consistently won when he wasn't injured. Mahomes won a super bowl with a suckass D and a lousy offensive line and running game.

Millennial_Messiah
02-03-2021, 05:40 PM
Long story short...

If Watson goes to a contender, a team like the Bears or Colts who's a "QB away" he'll look like a Tier 1 QB if they make a deep playoff run.

If Watson goes to a team like the Jets, and the Jets have to trade all their premium draft capital in the process, the Jets will improve from 2 wins to 4 and wonder what the fuck went wrong. Because they're the Jets and a talent-starved roster. And Watson will be proven as another overpaid Tier 2 guy. (Cousins is arguably Tier 2 / Tier 3 depending on the day.)

Brady went 9-7 and the defense was injury plagued. But still should have been good enough for a WC spot. Would have in today's league.

Rodgers did have a 6-9-1 season in 2018, but that was after he mailed it in due to wanting to get McCarthy booted out of town. Plus incredibly/historically difficult mid season schedule

My heart wants to see Tommy get one more. But the Chiefs juggernaut is just impossible to beat right now. You have to play a perfect game to have a chance to beat them, and you still might lose. And the Bucs, despite getting here, haven’t shown that they can consistently execute at that level. Brady got here, not because he played at a championship level, but because Brees/Rodgers proved to be bigger TOSB’s than him.

I don't quite agree with this post.

The Chiefs have looked very beatable outside of the Buffalo game(s) this year. A lot of one score games where they were a failed conversion on third down on offense away from giving the ball back to the other team with plenty of time. Almost lost at home to a bottom feeder (Atlanta). They haven't really been their dominant selves for awhile.

Both teams are stellar on offense and the Bucs have the superior defense. It will come down to mistakes... if Brady and company can avoid turnovers, and the Bucs win the sack and maybe strip sack Mahomes once or twice, the Bucs have the upper hand. If Brady plays like he did in the first two New Orleans games or his receivers fuck him over like the second half of the GB game, then the Chiefs have the upper hand.

Brees being a TOSB I fully understand, but Rodgers? Come on. His only one turnover was a questionable no-call defensive holding and while he did take 5 sacks, only 1 of them was a coverage sack and the other 4 were because the backups on the GB OL couldn't hold up for even an instant. And not running on 3rd and goal? Yeah he had space but he might not have had the touchdown, and he was probably thinking four-down territory and not that LaFleur would kick a field goal at that point.

Antonio Brown was a key absence in the GB game. If they had had him, a critical chain moving slot receiver, the GB second half would not have been nearly so close. Evans was abysmal, the running game was anemic and Brady had very few options to turn to. Having Brown back to complete their receiving corps is a huge win for the Bucs offense. As is getting Watkins back (who had a monster SB last year) for the Chiefs, so I definitely expect nothing less than a shootout.

Show me the hold on Brady's interception. Also, the refs were pretty consistent on letting the players play all playoffs long (Rodgers' interception against the Bucs comes to mind) but now they suddenly change their tune but only for one team.

If there was no separation and that was hip to hip they’d probably let it go as incidental as he was playing the ball. But when you’re beat by a yard and trip the receiver it’s an easy call

Same gameplan as that AFC Championship vs NE and last year vs the Niners tbh. Second half they started throwing it underneath to the RB’s to counter the rush. They need to get Edwards-Helaire and Bell involved in the passing game tbh.

But the big difference is the Pats had to send extra guys while Tompa is getting there with 4. And Arians/Leftwich probably won’t choke like Shanahan.

In the end, I still just refuse to bet against Mahomes.
