Bexar County elections official on state’s new mail-in ballot rules:

‘It’s just ridiculous’

Election offices can send a mail-in ballot application to someone only if it is requested.

If a resident calls the office to request an application,

that individual cannot also request one for her husband,

“We have to hear it from him. … It’s just ridiculous.”

the application requires voters to provide, on both their vote-by-mail application and the actual ballot, their driver’s license number or Social Security number —

and they must choose the same number for both.

42 of the 80 applications for mail-in ballots the Elections Department (https://www.bexar.org/1568/Elections-Department) received Monday were rejected because they

violated one of the new rules.

It is now illegal for public officials to promote voting by mail,

Texas school board member faces calls to resign after his comments

linking failing schools to Black teachers

Henry criticized a report that faulted the district for not doing enough to hire a more diverse faculty, and the report said that lack of diversity was harmful to students' learning experiences.

"Cy-Fair has what? 13% black teachers?" Henry said, according to local news station KHOU (https://www.khou.com/article/news/education/cyfair-isd-board-member-racist-comments/285-f5c39023-7084-441a-9a8e-47717f158b31).

Greg Abbott complains about Joe Biden when confronted on Texas National Guard deaths

Facing bipartisan criticism (https://www.dallasnews.com/news/politics/2022/01/08/gov-greg-abbotts-border-strategy-questioned-by-foes-after-pay-problems-suicides/) over these tragic deaths, Abbott has issued a response befitting a true leader: But Joe Biden.

“The life of a soldier is far more valuable than the words of a politician playing politics.” :lol

“Abbott is shrugging off the deaths of five Guardsmen as he continues to denigrate the service of all Guard members by asking them to perform as the backdrop for his political photo ops,”

“He hasn’t paid them on time,

he’s slashed their earned benefits,

he has many living without necessities as basic as bathrooms, and

he’s left them without any leadership from the governor.

This is a mess of Abbott’s making.”

'From bad to worse':

U.S. judge (appointed by Clinton, not a Repug)

deplores conditions for Texas foster kids sent out of state

A Michigan facility housing Texas foster care children was missing its front door

while it was 28 degrees outside and

there hadn’t been indoor heat for 24 hours.

Staff didn’t make calls to get either the heat restored or the door fixed.

They also didn’t attempt to move the children or give them blankets or jackets.

That’s just one of the out-of-state facilities where

Texas recently sent 106 foster children, spending millions, after failing to find suitable placements in Texas,

according to a new report from federal court-appointed monitors who act as watchdogs for the system.

Judge Janis Jack criticized Department of Family and Protective Services officials over

their care of children within the system,

high workloads on individual caseworkers,

ongoing placement woes and

low COVID-19 vaccination rates among youth.

The lion's share of the States haven't released those funds, bouts. It's criminal. They put it in their accounts and won't release it. It's all American type behavior. "I'll give it to them when I absolutely have to and not until. Maybe they'll forget about it and then we can spend it on shit we really want. and need. Just hand onto it for as long as humanly possible."

Same with the COVID funds that Biden released to the schools. They ain't spent a quarter of the billions they were sent. Shoved it into the bank and locked it up tight. "I bought the masks and Mr. Clean, and more masks and more Spic & Span, and a shit load of tests, and I'm considering the ventilation shaft, but I need to think about that a LOT more. It's really expensive. So, while I'm considering the ventilation shaft I'll buy more masks and some more liquid cleaners. Yes, that's what I'll do. How much money is in there Dorothy (his secretary)?"

Experts have questions about Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton opposition to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals’ recent ruling that he can’t unilaterally prosecute voter fraud

Paxton has been appearing on conservative media outlets asking citizens to reach out to the Court of Criminal Appeals.

Partisan tactic by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s campaign delays thousands of requests for mail-in ballots from Texas voters

Thousands of applications for mail-in ballots submitted by Texas voters have been delayed — and some voters may ultimately not receive ballots — because Lt. “I want a long slow rim job while I have a drink,” Taylor allegedly wrote, according to the outlet. “Then for you to deep throat me while you stroke my c–k and I c-m on your tonsils.”
Toward the end of their affair, Joya asked Taylor for help paying off some bills and she claimed he agreed and gave her $5,000, but only if she kept her mouth shut.
“I needed help. I was like, just help me out because that’s the least – the very least – he could do,” she told the outlet.
“For him, it was like, ‘OK, on the condition you don’t tell anyone.’ … I didn’t want to tell anybody anything.”

The exposé was orchestrated by GOP candidate Suzanne Harp, who was contacted by Joya in hopes she could help her confront Taylor privately and persuade him to ditch his campaign and resign from Congress, the outlet reported.
Harp, an outspoken critic of Taylor, decided to send a supporter to interview Joya about the affair and audio of the discussion was then published by National File. The story was later picked up by Breitbart.
Joya told the outlet she didn’t intend for the story to blow up in the way that it did and was simply irked at having to see Taylor’s smiling face plastered on billboards throughout Plano where she lives.

During an evaluation ordered in earlier years by Child Protective Services, a psychologist found that Lucio had an IQ of 70, placing her in the intellectually disabled range (https://www.psychiatry.org/patients-families/intellectual-disability/what-is-intellectual-disability).

The National Registry of Exonerations found that in exonerations involving false confessions, 70 percent were by people with mental illness or intellectual disability (https://www.law.umich.edu/special/exoneration/Documents/Age%20and%20Mental%20Status%20of%20Exonerated%20De fendants%20Who%20Falsely%20Confess%20Table.pdf).

“Prosecutors minimized the impact of gender-based violence and exploit their trauma to obtain criminal convictions and death sentences.”

Approximately 40 percent of women who have been exonerated had been wrongfully convicted of crimes involving child victims (https://www.law.umich.edu/special/exoneration/Pages/Features.Female.Exonerees.aspx)

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick reduces profile of higher education in Texas Senate after attacking tenure

Patrick says move is to “align” policies from K-12 through college next year.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s restructuring of committees reduces the prominence of higher education in the Texas Senate.

On Tuesday, Patrick announced he’s relegating higher education to a subcommittee within the education committee to better “align” policies from K-12 through college and workforce development during next year’s legislative session.

Previously, higher education was its own nine-member committee.

Texas Is In Turmoil, As Green Finance Is Very Appealing To Major Funds

Laws to limit divestment in Texas have met with resistance, as bankers and analysts have figured out ways to detour around Big Oil in portfolios.

legislature passed a law that said if you don’t include fossil fuel companies in your portfolios, then you can’t do business in our state (https://cleantechnica.com/2022/03/21/boycotting-fossil-fuel-companies-in-texas-means-trouble/).

The law bars Texas’ state retirement and investment funds from doing business with companies that the State Comptroller says are “boycotting” fossil fuels.

the law contains numerous exceptions. For example,

companies that want to work with Texas can still avoid investing in fossil fuels as long as they are doing so

for strictly financial, rather than ethical or environmental, reasons. :lol

The Texas Republican Party will have a new party platform soon, thanks to a convention that saw over 5,000 delegates show up

The far-right Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw and his staff were physically assaulted by a crowd calling him "Eyepatch McCain" (https://www.mediaite.com/online/breaking-dan-crenshaw-staff-physically-assaulted-by-right-wing-attackers-shouting-eyepatch-mccain-at-tx-gop/)—

The state party will go into the midterms with an official declaration that President Joe Biden is not the legitimate President of the United States.
"We reject the certified results of the 2020 Presidential election, and we hold that acting President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was not legitimately elected by the people of the United States," says the Texas Republican Party (https://twitter.com/ScholarlySpoon/status/1538348371102015488?t=wBucgNMfchMf6g-MqAanLg&s=09).

You're officially a seditious conspiracy cult.

The party produced a document fully in tune with its fascist base; declaring non-allegiance to the elected leader of the United States is only the capper in a Texas Republican platform riddled with conspiracy and brazenly fascist rhetoric.

The party again asserts that Texas has a right to secede from the United States,

It also demands a new Constitutional convention to rewrite the founding documents of the nation it demands the right to leave.

Abolishing the Federal Reserve and repealing the federal income tax are oldies but goodies.

conspiracy theories claiming that the United Nations was going to come take our roads and replace them with bike lanes.

especially heavy on the indoctrination (sorry, grooming of Texas students.

There are planks specifically asserting homosexuality to be "abnormal" and a "lifestyle choice,"

another that looks to punish gender-affirming medical care in the state through civil mechanisms similar to what the state has already used to effectively ban abortions, and

another one prohibiting the teaching of "Critical Race Theory" in Texas.

the complete inability of anyone in the Texas Republican Party to so much as correctly define what it is they're banning.

the teaching of "sex education" or "sexual health" in public schools be made a state crime.

It requires schools to teach that life begins at conception and, according to the Tribune, requires students to "listen to live ultrasounds of gestating fetuses."

. The party demands that the state constitution itself be amended to strip from the legislature the power to enact any gun restrictions,

There will be Zero rules on buying or carrying guns in Texas.

the party document imagines a pseudo-religious fascist government that teaches the state's children which citizens are worthy of respect and which are "abnormal" or suffering from "mental health" problems.

a Texas Republican as the party slid into QAnon-styled conspiracy cult.

The state's Republican leaders are riddled with actual seditionists from top to bottom (https://twitter.com/svdate/status/1538573607634345984),

those under 21 are “most likely to need to defend themselves” and may need to quickly buy guns “in emergencies such as riots.”

It also would say that red flag laws violate the due process rights of people who haven’t been convicted of a crime.

The new platform would call for:

Requiring Texas students “to learn about the humanity of the preborn child,” including teaching that life begins at fertilization and requiring students to listen to live ultrasounds of gestating fetuses.
Amending the Texas Constitution to remove the Legislature’s power “to regulate the wearing of arms, with a view to prevent crime.”
Treating homosexuality as “an abnormal lifestyle choice,” language that was not included in the 2018 or 2020 party platforms.
Deeming gender identity disorder “a genuine and extremely rare mental health condition,” requiring official documents to adhere to “biological gender,” and allowing civil penalties and monetary compensation to “de-transitioners” who have received gender-affirming surgery, which the platform calls a form of medical malpractice.
Changing the U.S. Constitution to cement the number of Supreme Court justices at nine and repeal the 16th Amendment of 1913, which created the federal income tax.
Ensuring “freedom to travel” by opposing Biden’s Clean Energy Plan and “California-style, anti-driver policies,” including efforts to turn traffic lanes over for use by pedestrians, cyclists and mass transit.
Declaring “all businesses and jobs as essential and a fundamental right,” a response to COVID-19 mandates by Texas cities that required customers to wear masks and limited business hours.
Abolishing the Federal Reserve, the nation’s central bank, and guaranteeing the right to use alternatives to cash, including cryptocurrencies.

Fed up and fired up: Texas Republicans meet in a climate of mistrust, conspiracy and victimhood

the mood was not celebratory.

The Texas Tribune spoke to more than

Fed up with undocumented immigrants, even those fleeing war and poverty, for taking advantage of public benefits.

Fed up with the education of their children, especially on matters of history and race.

“The enemy is coming in and trying to change our society, change the very fabric of what made America great and they're doing it by going to the children,”

Ted Cruz stole the show, receiving standing ovations on Friday as he thundered against “radical leftists” driving a cultural assault.

“They want to tear down the church,” he said.

“They want to tear down our schools.

They want to tear down our families.

They want to tear down our faith.

They want to tear down our values.”

The crowd cheered Robin Armstrong, a Texas City doctor who has given patients unapproved COVID-19 treatments, including hydroxychloroquine.

The teaching of critical race theory, an academic approach to the study of racial inequality, was also a main concern among attendees.

Texas Republicans want to secede?

Over the weekend, while many Americans were celebrating the 167th anniversary of Juneteenth (when Union Gen. Gordon Granger, in Galveston, Tex., delivered the order abolishing slavery) the Texas Republican Party voted on a platform declaring that federal laws it dislikes “should be ignored, opposed, refused, and nullified.”

The proposed platform (it’s expected to be approved when votes are tallied) adds: “Texas retains the right to secede from the United States, and the Texas Legislature should be called upon to pass a referendum consistent thereto.” It wants the secession referendum “in the 2023 general election for the people of Texas to determine whether or not the State of Texas should reassert its status as an independent nation.”

Faced with a two-decade wait, these families had to leave Texas to receive disability services

Cameron and her brother, Brandon, 10, were diagnosed with autism while the family was living in Houston — and Daniel, 7, was showing the telltale signs of the developmental disability.

Sheletta, a native Houstonian, tried to get them services through the state of Texas. She was told it would be,

at a minimum, a 10-year wait.

So, Sheletta, 50, did the only thing she could think to give her children a chance — she and her now ex-husband, Shawn, moved to Minnesota, leaving behind generations of family members and close friends.

Houston Chronicle interviewed half a dozen families who, like the Brundidges, have made the difficult decision to leave the state in order to get their children help.
Most never wanted to leave. They didn’t feel they had a choice.

experts estimate there are 500,000 Texans living with intellectual and developmental disabilities, a Houston Chronicle investigation (https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/investigations/article/texans-disabled-waiting-care-services-17300909.php)found that the state has the capacity to serve barely a fifth of those individuals.

‘Wandering officers’ find new jobs in Texas, again and again

“The regulation of law enforcement in Texas is stuck at a crossroads.”

needed changes at the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (https://www.tcole.texas.gov/) (TCOLE), the agency that oversees the licensing and training of

the state’s 78,295 peace officers working in one of 2,729 law enforcement agencies (https://www.tcole.texas.gov/content/current-statistics)

Texas has an outdated system for organizing and registering a law enforcement entity, with small county courts and district attorneys registering individual agencies.

According to TCOLE data (https://sanantonioreport.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Percentage-of-Manned-Agencies-1.numbers) provided by Texas 2036, there are

currently 185 registered agencies that have zero peace officers,

540 agencies with a single peace officer,

674 with two to five officers, and

414 agencies with six to 10 peace officers.

Those small entities that in other states would be wrapped into larger law enforcement agencies account for more than 1,800 of the agencies overseen by TCOLE.

TCOLE staff is failing to address “wandering officers,” individuals who lose jobs at one law enforcement agency only to be hired by another agency.

It’s common knowledge among police chiefs and others I’ve spoken with that

police unions routinely appeal the “dishonorable discharge” of a police officer to the State Office of Administrative Hearings (https://www.soah.texas.gov/soah-case-records-search) (OAH), where those dismissals are often reversed or mitigated.

How Texas is paying for border security push under Operation Lone Star

The tab for Gov. Greg Abbott’s deployment of National Guard and DPS officers has topped $4 billion

and will likely need more.

With 11 months remaining in the cycle, it’s far from clear that state police and National Guard leaders have the wallet to keep operating at such a fever pitch.

To increase Texas’ spending on border enforcement fivefold,

Abbott and the Legislature in part have used a standard approach,

which is to fit the splurge into the two-year appropriations bill’s spending of state discretionary dollars —

and come back and add more in a supplemental spending bill.

Using disaster powers over the budget given to executive branch agencies under Abbott’s control,

the GOP leaders pumped another $975.8 million into Operation Lone Star this year by recycling part of its bounty from federal COVID-19 relief packages to free up state discretionary dollars.

How does Texas fail its kids? Let me count the ways

Recent news from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services,

Since the beginning of the year, nearly 2,300 workers (https://www.reformaustin.org/public-safety/texas-child-protective-services-is-hemorrhaging-caseworkers/) have made for the exits.

a litany of problems as their reasoning:

Too many cases,

pressure to close cases prematurely,

low morale and pay,

lack of communication,

problems with supervisors and

a host of other workplace dysfunction.

the tragedy of Sarah Brasse, an 8-year-old in Schertz who died in her own bed of — yes, in the 21st century — untreated appendicitis.

By the time Sarah died alone in her bed, stiff, cold and caked with vomit, the couple had been under intermittent watch by CPS for almost two years.

Sarah and her two brothers were being neglected. Urine-soaked clothes, insufficient food, a fetid home in chaos, a lack of parental follow-up on needed medical visits — the red flags were plentiful.

CPS reacted in half-hearted, ineffective fashion.

three professionals in separate calls — a cop, a school counselor and a school nurse —alerted CPS to their fears she was in danger, yet no one ordered a home visit.

Things get no better at the dinner table: 1 in 5 children (https://www.feedingtexas.org/learn/#:~:text=20%2525%252C%2520or%25201%2520in%25205,li fe%2520at%2520a%2520serious%2520disadvantage.) in Texas faces hunger.

‘This is our home’:

Texas farmers fight efforts to seize land handed down from enslaved ancestors

To Texas transportation officials, expanding U.S. 183 is a chance to alleviate congestion (https://www.txdot.gov/projects/projects-studies/austin/100919.html)south of Austin. But to the Alexander family, it’s a threat (https://www.change.org/p/save-the-alexander-family-farm-from-txdot-highway-expansion) to the land they’ve vowed for generations to protect (https://www.thealexanderfarm1847.org/)
.
Daniel Alexander was enslaved when he secured a promise in 1847 from his owners for 73.3 acres of land, which now sits west of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (https://www.austintexas.gov/airport) ,

Over the last 175 years, Alexander’s descendants have fulfilled a pledge to keep the land in the family.

In 1968, the Texas Department of Transportation (https://www.txdot.gov/)used eminent domain to seize part of their farmland and built U.S. 183 across the southeastern edge of their property.

In 2015, the family cemetery was flooded — a result of changes in drainage from subdivisions that surround their land.

TxDOT now is considering a project (https://www.txdot.gov/projects/projects-studies/austin/100919.html)that would take more Alexander land to widen U.S. 183.

The family worries that the expansion — across 400 feet of their property — would destroy two historic homes, one that may have been a Pony Express (https://www.nps.gov/poex/learn/historyculture/index.htm#:~:text=In%20the%20era%20before%20electr onic,the%20Rocky%20Mountains%20became%20obvious.)s tation, according to family lore.

How a tiny Texas government is scoring big tax breaks for developers across the state

In 2019, Texas lawmakers granted a small group of Central Texas businessmen permission to form their own government to develop agricultural land near the Austin airport.

Yet recently the SH130 Municipal Management District No. 1 has thrown its civic weight around far outside its own narrow boundaries,

using its status as a public agency to quietly arrange tens of millions of dollars-worth of property tax breaks for private developers across the state.

No local elected body reviewed the deals to determine if it made sense for taxpayers to subsidize the tax-exempt real estate projects in their backyards.

In fact, city and county officials often have been unaware the money was being taken from their schools, libraries, hospital districts and local governments.

The small district, meanwhile, stands to collect generous profits from the exemptions it helped arrange.

Some of the deals also involve businesses tied to its board members, raising questions about how they are using the government entity they formed.

In 2015, a single sentence grafted onto a dense finance bill in the closing days of the Texas legislative session created a new property tax break in exchange for modest affordable housing concessions.

Since then, developers have flocked to use the obscure law, removing hundreds of millions of dollars-worth of real estate from the tax rolls.

Having so many projects that don’t pay property taxes “was not the intent of the program,” :lol

the SH 130 district is using its 1,100-acre piece of land to create valuable tax breaks in far away jurisdictions —

making it "the poster child" of all that is wrong with the new affordable housing tax break,

Minority Rule: How 3 Percent of Texans Call the Shots for the Rest of Us

Statewide officials and legislators are far to the right of most Texans. Why? Low primary-election turnout and an anemic Democratic party.

Between 2010 and 2020, Texas grew by nearly four million residents (https://www.texasmonthly.com/news-politics/newest-texans-who-are-they/), with people of color responsible for 95 percent of that growth.

The state is now

40 percent non-Hispanic white,

40 percent Hispanic,

13 percent Black, and

6 percent Asian—with the latter the fastest-growing demographic.

In 2012 Mitt Romney won the state (https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/historical/presidential.shtml) by sixteen points. In 2020 Trump won by less than six.

Republican party has lurched to the right, enacting some of the country’s most reactionary policies and

helping make Texas an international byword for extremism (https://www.texasmonthly.com/the-daily-post/yall-norwegians-use-the-word-texas-as-slang-to-mean-crazy/).

Inside the Secret Plan to Bring Private School Vouchers to Texas

Political operatives descended on the Hill Country town of Wimberley with a scheme to send taxpayer dollars to private schools.

Now they’re shopping the same blueprint elsewhere.

Wimberley would partner with Harris and Bennett’s Texans for Education Rights Institute

to create a charter school tentatively dubbed the Texas Achievement Campus.

But “campus” was a misnomer, because there would be none.

The school would exist only on paper.

Texans for Education Rights would then work with ResponsiveEd, Whitehurst’s group, to

place K–12 students from around the state into private schools of their choice at “no cost to their families.”

a simple goal:

turning taxpayer dollars intended for public education into funds for private schools.

If the Democrats were to offer a viable alternative to Abbott they might have a chance. My wife and I are a mixed race couple and generally moderate in our political views. We are the people the Dems should be targeting.

All the Dems needed to do was pick an appealing moderate who wasn't constantly grandstanding by taking extreme leftist positions. So what do they do? They pick a polarizing trust fund jackass like "Beto" O'Rourke. "Beto" is perfect for Massachusetts or New York. But his far left BS doesn't fly in Texas.

We went out and voted yesterday (we didn't vote for Abbott or "Beto"). Then we went to the range and spent a couple of relaxing hours at the range with the guns "Beto" wants to take away from us (note to Dems: This is Texas, not San Francisco. If you want to attract new, independent voters, try picking someone who doesn't make "Hell yes, we're going to take your AR-15s!" the center piece of his campaign).

So Abbott will win again. Another unforced error by the Dems.

And frankly, I'm okay with that, given the awful alternative the Dems offered.

Do better next time, and you might get our vote.

Gerrymandering works when you can counter big city districts with large rural areas.
Once the urban areas grow large enough (see New York, California), it’s usefulness dwindles.

That said, voter suppression is a thing and will likely slow down the inevitable assimilation.

Maybe the GOP will stop being the party of weirdos by then, so who knows, tbh…

If labeling anyone who disagrees with your current political choice an irrational "right winger" helps you to cope with the thunderous butt kicking the Dems are about to receive both in Texas and nationally, you go right ahead. Cry into your beer and don't learn anything from the experience. Repeat it again in 2-years. Just don't be surprised when you get similar results.

Your labeling anyone who disagrees with you on anything as an "enemy" unworthy of intelligent conversation is part of the problem with extremists from both parties. But the inconvenient truth is, extremists don't win elections, it's convincing those of us in the center to support your party that wins elections.

We are far from the extreme right wingers you instinctively label us as simply because I had the temerity to suggest that "Beto" was a poor choice of candidate. We are both professionals with advanced degrees educated on the east and west coasts. Though we are doing well now, we both grew up poor and are give our time and money to a number of charities in SA. My wife is an immigrant who originally emigrated to California. We are pro choice, Tesla driving environmentalists. The last major party candidate we voted for in a Presidential race was a DEMOCRAT (Obama)- we found Hillary, Trump, and Biden all not worthy of our votes. We are pro immigration, we support marijuana/drug legalization and ending the insane "War on Drugs," we are atheists. We oppose militarization of the police and military interventionism overseas.

Not exactly "extreme right wingers," eh?

But we are also choose to own guns and enjoy the freedom of being allowed to go to the range on a nice afternoon, so of course you must ignore all that, and label us "extreme right wingers" in order to cope with the fact that we did not vote for Beto.

You, and extremists from both parties like you, are what is wrong with politics in America today. You are so wrapped up in your partisan "it's us or them!" BS, you just stopped thinking rationally. Like I said, our votes were available, and had the Dems not chosen a decent moderate instead of an extremist trust fund blow hard like "Beto," you would have had our votes.

Perhaps if Dems tried to earn the votes of people like us, rather than pushing us away, they'd be more successful?

Just because your wife is an immigrant and you are a libertarian it means you believe in a real US democracy?

I didn’t call anybody an ‘irrational right winger’ or ‘enemy’.

I’m just letting you know that there’s no unforced error here. Dems should not cater to a dwindling minority. Especially libertarians, an even smaller minority that couldn’t even get a nomination in the GOP (remember when that loser Ron Paul ran?).

I think you are missing some key points. If the Dems are going to win in TX in the near future, they are going to need every vote they can get, because any win they get will be razor thin, not a landslide. Hence, they should appeal to those in the middle. It's far easier to pick off votes from independents, moderates, and libertarians than to try and win over established Republicans. The far left is already going to vote Dem, so why bother pandering to them? They aren't going to be the difference maker.

They needed to run a candidate that doesn't take extreme views- one that won't alienate those in the middle. They failed to do so. Hence an "unforced error" and another Abbott victory.

I agree, it would be a surprise if they didn't take control of the House, at least. I'm about 99% sure that's going to happen. The real question this point is whether the Republicans will just barely win the House and hold a slim majority, or if it's going to be a blood bath for the Dems.

With California and New York solid blue, there’s no rush. Dems also need a boogeyman to point fingers to, and the current Texas Christian-Taliban leadership fills that role exceptionally well.

Democrats have other problems they need to shore up, like running some terrible candidates like Shillary and even Brandon, but demographics are simply in their favor longer term….

In 2010, we were 2+ years into an economic recovery. Today, inflation is at it's highest level in decades with no end in sight- that's the kind of thing everyone, even those who normally pay no attention to politics, take notice of, and they are going to want to blame someone. The Dems control the White House, the US House, and effectively control the Senate. They are in complete charge, and things aren't going well, so they are likely to pay a heavy price when things are going poorly in the economy. When even folks who have jobs and have always been responsible find themselves unable to feed and cloth their kids, or have to take an additional job in order to do so, they can get a bit cranky. And a cranky electorate doesn't bode well for the party in charge.

Also, I have a hunch (and it's just that, so I may be wrong) based on what I hear on a day to day basis that a lot of those same folks who are normally don't give a damn about politics, especially people those with kids, are more than a bit disconcerted by some of the extreme social policies being pushed by the far left elements of the Dem Party- whether it be "defund the police" or the seemingly excessive (obsessive?) focus on things like transgender politics. As I alluded to before, Dems in Texas aren't the same as Dems in Massachusetts- they tend to be a lot more religious/socially conservative and may not take kindly to some of the stuff that northeastern liberals love so much.

Sales tax certainly affects the poor more than the rich.

Another tax that kills the working class is the tax on gasoline. To a well paid professional, that 20 cents per gallon is just a minor annoyance, but to people just getting by, it's a brutal tax. I've never understood why Democrats love gasoline taxes so much, when they hurt poor people the most. Aren't Democrats supposed to be standing up for the poor and working class?

CATASTROPHE #88:

THE SHITBAG TEXAS LEGISLATURE RETURNS FOR A BRUTAL YEAR

What lawmakers should do to mitigate the state's cascading crises,

and what they are liable to do instead.

Firmly in control, Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and GOP lawmakers are now free to do as they please—to pick up where their vengeful 87th legislative session mercifully left off just over a year ago.

The party’s activist base is eager to

continue the march toward one-party authoritarianism,

punishing political enemies and

catering to political patrons as they go.

Many bills have already been filed to

further expand prosecution under Texas’ abortion ban,

along with measures to concentrate power over elections in the office of GOP Attorney General Ken Paxton and

to continue persecution of transgender children and their families.

From the 1970s well into the 21st century, the state regularly funded pay increases for its government employees.

But now workers haven’t seen a wage bump since 2014,

when lawmakers approved a modest 3 percent raise over two years,

accompanied by heavier workloads.

Employees in the lowest-paid positions are predominantly people of color, who are hit the hardest by these stagnant wages.

Among coastal states Texas is unique.

The 1959 Texas Open Beaches Act, as well as time-honored common law and tradition in existence since long before 1959, provides that Texas beaches are open to the public.

In 2009, Texans voted by a 77 percent to 23 percent margin to enshrine the Open Beaches Act into the Texas Constitution.
Senate Bill 434, by Sen. Mayes Middleton of Galveston (https://legiscan.com/TX/bill/SB434/2023), would

strip the authority of the Texas General Land Office to define the boundaries of the public beach and

would allow the upland beachfront property owner to make that determination.

The property owner could then deny access to the public beach easement that existed between the line of vegetation and the mean high tide mark.

That would then limit Texas beachgoers’ access to only what is known as the “wet beach” —

the area between the low tide and the high tide lines.

When that area is washed by waves during periods of high tide,

SB 434 would result in there being no beach at all for Texans to use.

Under Slaton’s bill, married couples with four children, including adopted ones, would receive a 40 percent property tax credit. At ten or more children, the tax credit would be 100 percent. The bill clarifies that the couple must stay married.

Texas legislature could strip cities of local authority

The Texas legislature is debating a pair of bills that would strip cities and counties of the right to set policy on a wide array of environmental, safety and discrimination issues.

These two state bills — House Bill 2127 (https://nxslink.thehill.com/click/30847699.43192/aHR0cHM6Ly9sZWdpc2Nhbi5jb20vVFgvdGV4dC9IQjIxMjcvaW QvMjY5MjE5OT9lbWFpbD00NjdjYjYzOTljYjdkZjY0NTUxNzc1 ZTQzMTA1MmI0M2E3NzVjNzQ5JmVtYWlsYT0xMmE2ZDRkMDY5Y2 Q1NmNmZGRhYTM5MWMyNGViNzA0MiZlbWFpbGI9MDU0NTI4ZTc0 MDM4NzFjNzlmNjY4ZTQ5ZGQzYzQ0YjFlYzAwYzdmNjExYmY5Mz g4Zjc2YmIyMzI0ZDZjYTVmMyZ1dG1fc291cmNlPVNhaWx0aHJ1 JnV0bV9tZWRpdW09ZW1haWwmdXRtX2NhbXBhaWduPTAzLjE1Lj IzJTIwRU0lMjAlRTIlODAlOTMlMjBUaGUlMjBIaWxsJTIwU3Vz dGFpbmFiaWxpdHk/6230d9d2b246d1049531daf9B516f4fb1) and Senate Bill 814 (https://nxslink.thehill.com/click/30847699.43192/aHR0cHM6Ly9sZWdpc2Nhbi5jb20vVFgvdGV4dC9TQjgxNC9pZC 8yNjkyNDgwP2VtYWlsPTQ2N2NiNjM5OWNiN2RmNjQ1NTE3NzVl NDMxMDUyYjQzYTc3NWM3NDkmZW1haWxhPTEyYTZkNGQwNjljZD U2Y2ZkZGFhMzkxYzI0ZWI3MDQyJmVtYWlsYj0wNTQ1MjhlNzQw Mzg3MWM3OWY2NjhlNDlkZDNjNDRiMWVjMDBjN2Y2MTFiZjkzOD hmNzZiYjIzMjRkNmNhNWYzJnV0bV9zb3VyY2U9U2FpbHRocnUm dXRtX21lZGl1bT1lbWFpbCZ1dG1fY2FtcGFpZ249MDMuMTUuMj MlMjBFTSUyMCVFMiU4MCU5MyUyMFRoZSUyMEhpbGwlMjBTdXN0 YWluYWJpbGl0eQ/6230d9d2b246d1049531daf9B036052cf) — would bar municipalities from passing or enforcing local rules in several critical areas “unless explicitly authorized by statute.”

Seizing power: This means that unless the Texas legislature has given cities specific right to pass rules and ordinances pertaining to natural resources, agriculture or labor, such rules are null and void as soon as they are passed.

Potential nullified laws could range from new anti-discrimination rules to bans on certain kinds of pollution or industrial practices.

A bigger fight: The proposed legislation builds on nearly a decade of state Republican attacks on the autonomy of Texas cities — like Austin’s attempted ban (https://nxslink.thehill.com/click/30847699.43192/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cudGV4YXN0cmlidW5lLm9yZy8yMDE4LzA3Lz AzL3JlcG9ydC1hdXN0aW4tZW5kLWl0cy1iYWctYmFuLWFmdGVy LXRleGFzLXN1cHJlbWUtY291cnQtcnVsaW5nLz9lbWFpbD00Nj djYjYzOTljYjdkZjY0NTUxNzc1ZTQzMTA1MmI0M2E3NzVjNzQ5 JmVtYWlsYT0xMmE2ZDRkMDY5Y2Q1NmNmZGRhYTM5MWMyNGViNz A0MiZlbWFpbGI9MDU0NTI4ZTc0MDM4NzFjNzlmNjY4ZTQ5ZGQz YzQ0YjFlYzAwYzdmNjExYmY5Mzg4Zjc2YmIyMzI0ZDZjYTVmMy Z1dG1fc291cmNlPVNhaWx0aHJ1JnV0bV9tZWRpdW09ZW1haWwm dXRtX2NhbXBhaWduPTAzLjE1LjIzJTIwRU0lMjAlRTIlODAlOT MlMjBUaGUlMjBIaWxsJTIwU3VzdGFpbmFiaWxpdHkjOn46dGV4 dD1BYmJvdHQlMjBhbmQlMjBEZVNhbnRpcy0sUmVwb3J0JTNBJT IwQXVzdGluJTIwdG8lMjBlbmQlMjBpdHMlMjBiYWclMjBiYW4l MjBhZnRlciUyMFRleGFzJTIwU3VwcmVtZSx2aW9sYXRlZCUyMH N0YXRlJTIwbGF3JTJDJTIwS1VUJTIwcmVwb3J0ZWQu/6230d9d2b246d1049531daf9B80d73a3f) on single-use plastic bags or Denton’s failed attempt (https://nxslink.thehill.com/click/30847699.43192/aHR0cHM6Ly9kZW50b25yYy5jb20vbmV3cy9maXZlLXllYXJzLW xhdGVyLWRlbnRvbnMtZXBpYy1iYXR0bGUtdG8tYmFuLWZyYWNr aW5nLWFuZC1rZWVwLWxvY2FsLWNvbnRyb2wvYXJ0aWNsZV9kZj kxMDMyOC03NDA5LTVhY2YtYjk1MS01OTM0YWQ3NjZjMTIuaHRt bD9lbWFpbD00NjdjYjYzOTljYjdkZjY0NTUxNzc1ZTQzMTA1Mm I0M2E3NzVjNzQ5JmVtYWlsYT0xMmE2ZDRkMDY5Y2Q1NmNmZGRh YTM5MWMyNGViNzA0MiZlbWFpbGI9MDU0NTI4ZTc0MDM4NzFjNz lmNjY4ZTQ5ZGQzYzQ0YjFlYzAwYzdmNjExYmY5Mzg4Zjc2YmIy MzI0ZDZjYTVmMyZ1dG1fc291cmNlPVNhaWx0aHJ1JnV0bV9tZW RpdW09ZW1haWwmdXRtX2NhbXBhaWduPTAzLjE1LjIzJTIwRU0l MjAlRTIlODAlOTMlMjBUaGUlMjBIaWxsJTIwU3VzdGFpbmFiaW xpdHkjOn46dGV4dD1NaW5lcmFsJTIwb3duZXJzJTJDJTIwb3Bl cmF0b3JzJTIwYW5kJTIwcmVsYXRlZCxUaGUlMjBiYW4lMjBsYX N0ZWQlMjAxOTYlMjBkYXlzLg/6230d9d2b246d1049531daf9B2ba2099d) to keep fracking out of city limits.

How State Regulators Allowed a Fading West Texas Town to Go Over Four Years Without Safe Drinking Water

The Texas attorney general finally filed suit last year,

but some residents in Toyah say the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was “negligent” and

want to know what took so long.

there was nothing simple about Toyah’s water woes, which were years in the making and remain unresolved.

A boil water notice issued in June 2018 is still in effect.

In the shadow of the country’s most prosperous oil and gas fields,

the residents of Toyah, many low-income and Hispanic, have gone nearly five years without safe drinking water.

holds the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) responsible for

allowing the town to stall and remain out of compliance with hundreds of drinking water violations

it filed against Toyah over the past five years.

Long before a Chinese spy balloon (https://apnews.com/article/chinese-balloon-military-involvement-e45c759cb00294e83989fa35970935bc) captivated and spooked the U.S. public, Kyle Bass foresaw what he deemed another foreign danger slated for skies above the Texas-Mexico border: wind turbines.

Dozens of them, roughly 700 feet (213 meters) tall — as big as San Antonio’s tallest skyscraper — were set to sprout across thousands of scrubby acres near the pristine Devils River.

Protests that a wind farm would harm a sensitive ecosystem in Texas flopped, :lol :lol TX don't give a shit about ecosystem

but when attention turned to a Chinese billionaire behind the project, state lawmakers raced to pull the plug.

“Drumming up the ire against the national security issues was easier than the environmental issues,”

in a twist, plans for some of the tallest wind turbines in the country are back on —

hurt feelings and

Texas ‘preemption’ bills escalate war between liberal cities, conservative legislature

Local officials across Texas are worried that far-reaching state bills could

roll back their attempts to ensure construction workers get rest breaks in Texas’ searing heat,

to run no-kill animal shelters and

to maintain local water quality.

HB2127 and SB814,

which would prevent local governments from passing or enforcing local rules in several critical areas “unless explicitly authorized by statute,”

GOP sponsors and conservative groups say ... would protect Texas business owners from an unprecedented and aggressive overreach by the state’s booming, blue-tinged cities.

the legislation would strip cities of their ability to regulate a broad range of environmental, labor and health and safety concerns.

If passed, they would nullify any local ordinances that could fall under the rubric of the state’s labor, natural resources, agriculture, insurance or occupations codes —

unless the legislature writes specific legislation directly permitting a rule.

would also allow any citizen to sue their county — or a neighboring county — over a local law that they felt violated the state’s new powers,

opening blue- or purple-leaning counties to a flood of lawsuits from their more conservative peripheries.

The two bills — like a flurry of other state legislation this session aimed at staving off other potential city ordinances —

“are more an effort to staunch the authority of Democrats as to have anything to do with diminishing friction in business,”

‘WE ARE IN A CRISIS’:

TEXAS PUBLIC SCHOOLS ON THE EDGE

Vouchers and property tax cuts strike at a public school system already hemorrhaging hard-working employees.

In early March, the old sewage pipes of a Houston public middle school broke.

By noon, there were only two bathroom stalls for 1,200 students. At 2 p.m.,

sewage water started leaking out into the hallways.

Teacher Traci Laston tried to push ahead instructing her class, but the students couldn’t focus.

“This is happening all over Texas in schools with old infrastructure.

There’s just no extra funds for building repairs, for anything,” Laston said.

“The politicians are worried about what content is being taught or not being taught …

versus truly fixing the problems in schools.”

New ordinances would ban driving through cities and counties en route to abortion care

Texas roads and highways are emerging as the newest battleground over abortion (https://abc13.com/tag/abortion/)care.

More than a year after Roe v. Wade was overturned and abortion was mostly outlawed in Texas,

anti-abortion groups are getting more aggressive -- and creative -- in

trying to stop women from getting the procedure out of state.

New laws currently on the table in many smaller Texas towns would

make it illegal to even drive through the city or county for the purpose of an abortion.

Two cities and counties in Texas have already passed the measure,

and many more are set to vote on a similar version soon, according to the Texas Tribune.

The strategy, engineered by Right to Life group architects of SB 8, a.k.a. the heartbeat bill (https://abc13.com/texas-politics-abortion-rights-trigger-ban-law-2022-exceptions/12163065/), comes

amidst growing frustrations about the number of women who are going out of state to circumvent the ban.

There are questions about what would be enforced:

private citizens can sue any group or party they believe to be in violation of the law.
