View Full Version : Spurs Shopping Aldridge and DeRozan

DDR to Charlotte isn't happening. They almost have to include Rozier for salary. Even then assuming the Spurs won't go over the lux tax threshold then they would have to include at least 2 other players. They could use Cody Zeller if the play is to get their draft pick, but beyond that why would the Spurs add another guard to the rotation?
This is Michael Jordan the GM we're talking about.

Repeating myself, but Rozier and PJ Washington works. Obviously, Charlotte would have to reach an agreement with DD and his representation that he would stay.
I know Kobe is DeMar's idol, but I think Jordan would be the next best thing for him as far as appeal.

It probably doesn’t mean anything, he’s probably just supporting his teammate after missing the all star game but Keldon randomly posted a picture to his Instagram story of Demar dunking the ball.

MJ would probably love to finally have a "big 3" in LaMelo, DeMar, and Hayward.

I was trying to find a way to flip Lonnie, but the salaries would require adding another young player from CHA. We can only take one more contract than we send out, so they can’t send us a couple of end of roster guys.

It makes sense for both teams:
Murray/ Tre/ Q
White/ Rozier
Keldon/ KBD
Washington/ Luka
Poeltl/ LMA/ Eubanks
Add Mills in there and Lonnie if you can.
Edit: Gay too, if possible.

Methinks it helps the transaction happen easier because the numbers match up. We need some type of chucker when Mills is gone.

There's your answer for our hole at backup 5.
Sell the house for PJ. Send future firsts if you have to. The fit is undeniable.

Maybe as a sign and trade Rozier for DeRozan could work. Right now, it doesn't work salary wise and there's no other obvious piece that would do so (Washington is a pipe dream).
Granted, one of Rozier, Graham or Monk is most likely gone before next season, but Rozier is significantly cheaper than DeRozan and a better fit with Hayward and Ball.
He fits the type I could see the Spurs pursuing though. Youngish veteran, who can create his own shot/shoot. Would fit well in a mostly 3 guard rotation with Murray and White and they could play together some.

They want to make the playoffs, and they likely will miss, or just squeeze in with Rozier and the kiddies. They’ve wanted DD for a while. He can probably get them into the top 4-5 in the East. They’re not liking to contend, just show well.

Just don't see it.
Rozier has played better than I ever expected, but he is a small combo guard
Also I don't see how DDR moves them much further. He takes the ball out of Ball's hands. As stated earlier Rozier fits best with the team they have.

is rozier even a combo guard? he's pretty small. basically just a PG, but with Mills expiring, we definitely have room for him in the future. can play alongside either of murray/white.
washington aint bad and he's under contract cheap for another season.
the pieces are good fits, and while i'm not sure we get better this year, its a nice move looking forward to the near future with the caveat that it does limit our potentially activity in the summer (john collins dreams, etc)

Rozier contract is little more than Murray and White, but expires after next season. His contract goes down in value though. Just not sure why Spurs would invest just over 40 mil in guards. PG's at that. At least DDR can play 1 to 4.
Maybe something along the lines of this.

Uh oh. You said the W word.
No doubt Spurs gotta move one of them and perhaps both, but depending on what/who they get in return. Moving Aldridge should be priority #1. He doesn’t fit, defense sucks, and has checked out (IMO). The sad thing is that his value currently sucks. The Spurs could only hope that a team wanting to shred salary next offseason will take Aldridge, but that usually means they want a young up and coming player in return. The other option would be a contending team desperately wanting a big that they feel can push them deep into the playoffs. Not sure there is a team out that sees Aldridge as that player. Maybe Boston? Portland? The return from those teams is weak though. A team like Orlando might trade Vucevic, but would they want Aldridge? Only if they are that desperate to rid themselves of his contract, which isn’t bad at all. They would want someone like Walker in return though.
If it’s LMA and Walker for Vuc, it’s a no brainer. Orlando will want more, or one of White or Keldon.
Adding Rozier would be stupid.
Moving DDR would have to be for some combination of two of Bridges, Washington, and a pick. (+Cody Zeller for matching)

I was pretty sure that would be the case. The only way we get even a small asset is if someone doesn’t want to compete on the buyout market, and maybe throws us a second rounder. I knew he had to be unhappy. They basically shut him down. I think both the hip, and the stomach thing were ruses to avoid tagging him with DNP/ CDs. He only was activated to play when we were short handed due to COVID.

That's my view as well...the earlier talk about Vuc (giving up way to much) to play behind Poeltl (as some suggested) is similar to this imo. Love is fine as a backup C and is similar to Vuc in some respects. Yes, he's way overpaid but an unprotected 1st would mitigate that...
My thoughts exactly.

Why wouldn't we do a three way with Cleveland and Toronto. Hasn't Toronto talked of wanting Drummond. Plus, Cleveland has said they are going to hold on to Drummond til the last minute to try and get a pick. They want to get more than the 2nd rd pick they used to get him. So do this:
Cleveland - LMA/2023 1st Rd (Spurs) - Cavs buyout LMA and they have a 1st rd pick
Toronto - Drummond/2021 2nd Rd (Spurs) - or send LW4 and keep pick
Spurs - Lowery/2022 2nd Rd (Cavs) - reunites with DeRozen, quarterbacks the second unit
At the very least you try and get something for LMA. He's going to get bought out regardless so he can play with Dame in Portland.
Lowrey, Drummond, and LMA have contracts in the same ballpark and all expiring.

Giving up a 1st rd pick to get Lowry, who turns 35 this month? I like Lowry, but a 35 year old PG is just not something the Spurs need.

He said watch out for GS and SA on draft day. If teams higher than us had the 11 pick they can trade for 2 etc.
Wiseman interest was said before that something about spurs did their homework on Wiseman.
Deni was probably a pick away from dropping to 11 maybe that is still true. He said Jalen Smith to PHX early on, something about reminding them of Kurt Thomas.
It is not that hard to piece together, sometimes the tea leaves is the only thing you get.

Exactly what we gave up for him. I’d rather he walk than take on a bad contract just to “ get something”. He has no value at this point.
I’ll never give you an argument about his heart, but he was a plus player up until the shutdown last year. Made 3 ASGs wearing S&B. I don’t even think his detractors would have predicted that his game would just drop off a cliff this year.

They could...they have Fournier and Ennis as expiring and could add another $5mill in 2 year contracts to make the numbers work... Thank you my friend for the clarification!
Orlando is looking like they aren't going to trade anyone at deadline. Gordon will have one year left on his contract and it decreases next year. Vooch is saying publicly, he doesn't want to leave. If Gordon is traded to improve the team, it will be in the offseason with more suitors giving a bigger return. They will keep losing this year, but that just puts them in a position to be in the hunt for picks 1-5 in the draft because of the draft lottery odds.
My speculation would be they target Kuminga in the draft. Try to resign Fournier, get Fultz and Isaac back, trade Gordon for picks and bench help. They could roll a line up of Fultz, Fournier, Kuminga, Isaac, Vooch with Ross, Carter Williams, Aminu, Okekee, and Anthony coming off the bench. Don't think Magic will do any trades til offseason.

I have to say it...once again I'm right...but it's cool tho... Let's hope we trade him and at least get a pick

I don’t care what he did on those two seasons for the Spurs when Nephew left. He was never a winner. And his #12 definitely should not go on the rafters. It was always Bowen’s. Good riddance.

Great news tbh. They probably have something in the works and just putting the finishing touches.
As long as they don't take any long-term money back, it's all good. But knowing this FO's recent trading history, I'm still terrified :lol
Lukas is the happiest person on earth right now about LA’s news.

They're gonna end up buying him out. He'll be generous and give back $10.

will still overall look back fondly at LMA's tenure with the spurs. even up until last year, his defense was surprisingly good. and yeah, a premier FA chose the spurs, thats always a big deal. but his game fell off a cliff, and i always thought he was the kind of guy that would age a lot more gracefully.
it was definitely time. just wish they moved him during the draft when he would have had more value

Or 3 years ago when I said that would be our best move as an organization

Nephew is the biggest cancer of all time. Aldridge has always been a loser and stats first guy and quit on Portland once only to come crying back to them again. Morris has always been a knucklehead. Not the Spurs fault other than they showed poor judgement in trusting these guys.

Miami has a ton of expiring contracts. They could easily do a swap of expirings (with the Spurs cutting all of them) for Aldridge that saves the Spurs a few million, giving them breathing room under the tax. Miami is $6M away from the tax itself so the salary disparity can't be too big, but there's some room for a deal there.

They want to make the playoffs, and they likely will miss, or just squeeze in with Rozier and the kiddies. They’ve wanted DD for a while. He can probably get them into the top 4-5 in the East. They’re not liking to contend, just show well.
DeRozan isn't altering their ceiling and may in fact make them worse due to being a poorer fit.

We can only take two contracts in a one player deal. You can’t just have 16 or 18 players under contract, and then cut some to make 15. You can never have more than 15 players on your NBA roster for any reason. Not even with the intent of cutting some. Not even for one second.

We can actually take two more back than we send out if we are taking back just over $4 million in salary less than we're sending out by releasing Lyles just before we file the trade. (I'm not saying we should do that...just noting that we can)

They’ll need the entire roster to get through this second half schedule. He may not play regular minutes, but he’ll play. They’ll start swapping out 3-4 guys from the rotation for back to backs, and rest games..

Waived Players still count against the cap so it would really save us nothing. We could do LMa for for AI and someone as he has a TO for the second year. but the questions becomes why.

My genuine hope is that Pop doesn't want teams to include him in any deal...so he is holding off playing him until after the trade deadline...don't expect to see much from him tbh

If toronto is wanting Aldridge and wants to get rid of Lowery then do a LMA and mills for Boucher and Lowery. Dont know what they are wanting for Lowery but would get us another youngish big who a lot like on here. Could also do Rudy instead of mills but we already have so many guards.

Why would Toronto want old LMA? Why would old LMA want to be in Toronto? Why would SA want Lowry? None of this makes sense. The teams are swapping player to buy them out? What?

This would surely require our 1st or multiple picks. Willing to trade and willing to give away for LA’s corpse are two different things this forum regularly fails to understand.
FWIW this is one of the few trades I’d be all for including a 1st or adding Lonnie to. Markkanen would be huge for us.

Agreed... I'm for moving our 1st and Lonnie as well for the right deal...
