Welp, for the first time in the Spurs history, they have missed the playoffs for a second straight year. Last year we had the silver lining of a short turnaround after the bubble....but it's gonna be a long offseason.
In the meantime, the playoff brackets are set and games kick off today.
Who are you rooting for?
Who are you rooting against, and why is it the Clippers and Lakers?
Out of the West, Denver would be my dark-horse pick if Murray was healthy...but he's not. Suns, Mavs, and Jazz are all good stories, but you lose your Spurs card if you root for them. Memphis fought their way into the playoffs, but they are a tier below the other teams.
In the East, I'd like to see the Bucks go all the way. Giannis seems like a good guy and it would be a slight coup for small market teams being able to keep their superstar. Knicks would be a great story too, even though it will make New York fans insufferable to deal with. Sixers have to prove that their style of play can work in the playoffs, and Heat could surprise some people but I think they were a flash in the pan last year.
Honestly, I'd be fine with anybody but the Lakers/Clippers and Nets in the Finals...unfortunately, that seems to be the most likely outcome. If it comes down to it...let LeBron have another ring. Doesn't change much. I just don't want to see Kawhi or Harden win.

I'll get my NBA fix while I can. Otherwise, there is nothing but baseball (ugh) or golf (good if I want to take a nap) until football season starts.
I guess I could actually spend more time doing productive things....but what's the fun in that?

I'm rooting for the Bucks as well. I like Giannis and Jrue Holiday, and a small market team winning would be good for basketball. I don't think LeBron's 100%, so the Lakers will have a tough time winning three series without home court. Rooting against flat earther Kyrie and uber talented lackadaisical Harden. I think mostly I'll be rooting for good showings from individual players I find interesting: Daniel Gafford, De'Andre Hunter, Jokic, etc., and looking to see who emerges as a surprise playoff stand out-- Reggie Bullock, Facundo Campazzo, Mikal Bridges?

Pulling for anybody out east besides BKN.

Rooting for the Jazz in the West.
They built a legit playoff roster from next to nothing.
Hayward walked, they got Mitchell and especially Gobert with relatively low picks. Developed O'Neale.
Ingles was a scrub noone wanted, same goes for Clarkson who went from inefficent chucker to 6moty chucker.
Unlocked Bojan's full potential and revitalized Conley.
Hopefully Bucks make it out of East.
Fuck those 3 in Brooklyn, fuck Doc and Morey, noone else has a chance.

I am rooting for the Grizzlies. I genuinely like them but there’s a few others I also like, Denver and Mavs. If I am honest, i only truly dislike the Clippers (duh obviously)...
I dont care much for any of the East teams but J. Tatum is my favorite East conference player.

While I'd prefer a Bucks or Jazz (or Nuggets, who'd have been a threat with Murray healthy) over a Nets or Lakers, the only team I'm actively rooting for/against is the Clippers (even though the damage is already done), who unfortunately not only have the most complete team, but have everything aligning for them too.

Rooting for the Bucks. I loved the Admiral and (get ready to cringe) the Big Ticket, so obviously the Greek Freak is my favorite non - Spurs player.
And I like Jrue Holiday, Middleton, Lopez and of course coach Bud. Them winning would be huge for the city of Milwaukee, other small market teams and stars/superstars that actually want to compete.
Obviously rooting against nearly everyone out West, except Denver, but especially the Lakers and Clippers. No need for further explanation, IMO......

:tu There's a lot of interesting story/legacy stuff hanging in the balance this year: Lebron could get 5th ring w/ 3 teams, Kawhi could get 3rd ring w/ 3 teams, Giannis could win his first before he turns 27 (earlier than LeBron or MJ), Utah could finally win a title...

For the Lakers to have more than a punchers chance in this series and at another championship in the James era (not happening this season), they're going to have to convince Davis and James to primarily play their modern defensive positions and add significantly more shooting.

Luka can definitely be a whiny little POS, but he didn't derail the Spurs as a contender and leave us locked in the cellar.
Easy choice for me on who to root for.
As for the tweet, it's no coincidence that Kawhi's days as a DPOY candidate coincided when he had a lesser role on offense. He's still a great defender, but not to the level he was when he was checking LeBron or Durant in 2013-2016. He was pouring a lot of energy into that side of the ball.
If they try to throw him on Luka, he'll probably be limping around out there by game 5. Also, whatever happened to the "great defender" Paul George?

True-- his energy was legendary. All of his teammates and coaching staff on the Barcelona Olympic team talked about it again and again-- how Jordan would stay up all night playing cards, then go shoot a round of golf, then go to practice, etc... so many different people say the same thing: "I don't know when the guy slept." Even when Pippen took the toughest assignment, Jordan was still a wrecking ball defensively.

Anderson was also a steal for them. Valanciunas is a good value and a great fit for as much as they get out of him. The two rookies they found low in the draft have given them great production. Winslow appears to have been a bad gamble though.

They overachieved greatly last year, kind of like the Lakers, in a bubble postseason most players and teams weren't up for. Butler is a headcase and news is he's already grating on his teammates. They draft excellently and don't doubt they can find improvements.

I don’t see myself as their mom (not that old tbh) but I do like to watch the guys thrive... otherwise why watch right? Curiosity only takes you so far. I thought Bryn was going to be able to help Milwaukee so long as they don’t over rely on him like Pop did. Glad to see him play well. He wouldn’t have guarded Morant or Brooks well and he wasn’t going to get the open looks Miami had gifted them. Him being on the Spurs would have been a completely different picture. Why the fuck is Mavs-Clippers on NBA TV? That's the most intriguing matchup in the entire playoffs.
Because Lebron/Lakers.
Super weird that they have both L.A. teams playing at the same time, though. I can't remember games overlapping like that before, but I guess even the playoff schedule is forced to be condensed this year.
That team is top to bottom 1000% better than our current roster
Needs a solid center (a.k.a. not Dedmon), but yeah that could easily be a playoff squad in the East. West is too overpowered this year.

Forbes is a perfect fit on this yawnfest.
Giannis fucks around and some game-less chucker has to bail him out with a jumper.

I watch a lot of basketball, even outside of the Spurs....and there are certain teams that no matter who plays or how much they are hyped....I just always find boring. Even if I am rooting for them to win, I don't really care.
Atlanta, Indiana, Milwaukee, Utah, and Memphis all fall into that category. New Orleans is borderline with Zion.
I'm sure a lot of people felt the same way about the Spurs for 20 years or so.

Kawhi and PG will wear Lebron out. That's what I'm betting on. He's too old to be able to guard both of them in 7 game series. I'm actually going to enjoy this title run by Durant if it happens. I hated the Warriors with a passion. Couldn't stand Draymond,Curry, Klay they were all insufferable. This Nets team is not hateable in that regard. Plus it's going to be fun to watch him stop Lebron from padding his legacy again.
You also have to factor in the media hates Durant and Durant hates them. He won't get over hyped by wining this title. They will discredit him again and he will get on twitter and get emotional which will be comedy. Kyrie is also a basket case so there is a probability this guy just goes rogue after winning the title and becomes a monk. Harden will be happy with 1 title and will get super fat and waste money on strippers.

I don't believe Lebron can play top notch defense for 4 games at his current age. That's what he would have to do against PG/Kawhi. Lebron can usually cheat and guard the least talented player on the offensive end and save his energy on defense. I also don't believe he will be able to produce easy baskets against Kawhi/PG. Lebron will have to be great at both ends of the court in a 7 game series if he faced the Clippers. At his old age I don't think he's capable of that.

100% agree, but sadly the history books won't have any asterisks next to those.
Sure, we all know he didn't truly scratch and claw to get to the top of the mountain...but if Durant pussy-foots his way into 4 or 5 rings when all is said and done, his name will start showing up in the Top 10 discussions and he'll be compared to the likes of Kobe or Duncan who truly earned theirs.

Nets-Lakers would definitely be a contrast of styles. Nets would be bombing away from deep and Lakers would be throwing everything into the paint.
That said, I still think the Nets take it if everyone is healthy. Davis and LeBron would have to be nearly perfect for 4 games to win and they both look a little off right now, whereas the Nets just have too much firepower.

Lebron does not have the energy at his old age to play high level defense for 48 minutes. He can do it in small stretches but not for a full game hence why he guards the easiest player on the perimeter for most of the game and then will have small stretches where he will guard someone like Booker but there is no way he could do it for a full game. I can't see him being able to guard a PG or Kawhi for a full 48 minutes. The same applies to having to guard Durant,Irving,Harden for a full 48 minutes and not being able to take a rest. Lebron can pretty much coast on the defensive end against other teams but he can't do it against the Clippers or Nets. That's why I believe he will lose.
Harden is the only choker on the Nets. Durant and Kyrie have had their moments in the playoffs where they have come through both have won titles. I don't see them choking against Lebron like a lot of these guys do. Durant especially has no fear of Lebron after curb stomping him twice in '17 and '18.
Ty Lue already spinning bullshit for the Clips:
I'm not concerned," Lue said. "We gotta win four games, and you come in on an opposing team's floor and play, there's no pressure on you to make shots. You just try to come in and steal a game, steal two games. But now they gotta go home and keep up the same shooting. It's easy to go on the road and do that with no pressure. We'll see in Game 3."
No pressure to make shots on the road? WTF is he even talking about?
Does he think they are going to win if they don't make shots?
Good look going into the first hostile playoff environment this Clippers squad has seen in two years being down 0-2 with no pressure.

It's almost uncanny.
Like, there is no way the NBA could script Chris Paul being injured by his own teammate. That's just straight up bad luck.
But LeBron still seems to catch so many breaks in his title runs...due to seeding or injury or suspensions or whatever. That is, of course....unless he runs into the Spurs.
The Lakers had to beat the goddamn Jimmy Butler Heat for their title last year. I'm sorry, but they weren't that good then and they aren't that good now.
If it weren't for a couple missed free throws or Pop pulling Duncan, he'd be one ring short.

Right now you're right but there are lots of games to be played and if the Lakers get there they will be ready then. Nets have nothing inside, no one is stoping AD and LeBron, on the other end i can see the Lakers being able to get more stops. Easy baskets are crucial in the playoffs and i can see the Lakers having easier baskets than the Nets closer to the basket. I give the Lakers a great shot because they defend well unfortunately because i hate the mfs
Sixers and Wizards are playing a game of basketball.
Oh yeah, no one cares.

I am skeptical. It's not normal to not have him play when you sit LMA who wants to be traded and looks washed, you lose faith in Lyles who has a mysterious injury and also wants to get traded midseason, and this guy, first round pick that they were so high on, doesn't play. The team has been in the lottery for two seasons in a row and even though it wasn't clear midseason, you are telling me playing him would have resulted in tanking? That also doesn't give me hope.
I am rooting for him, but I am kind of upset that the Spurs didn't play him this season. For what?

Judging from Pop, he seems to see Luka as being young and (reading between the lines) immature. In Europe, I've been told he was sort of moody/crazy and that was why he wasn't profiled higher in the draft. That said, I think he made progress this year. He came out of his shell and positively interacted with his teammates and seems to have become part of the team. As for how to interpret his production on the court: in 180 seconds of mop up duty he sucked. When given big minutes, he did really well and shocked everyone here as to how great a defender he could be (even The Ringer commented on it, so it wasn't just homer glasses). I think he didn't play, as Dejounte mentioned, because Pop was trying to make the playoffs and likely fell back into his old habit of shortening rotations and leaning on veterans. I think Pop still inherently doesn't trust young players and my opinion is that he was shocked how well the team did in the bubble by prioritizing the young players, and though he said he wanted to play like the bubble, as the season went on he sort of forgot that and went back to his vets because he likes them and trusts them more. That's my analysis of the Luka Conundrum.

What killed the Spurs’ playoff hopes is that they went 2-10 in the last 12 games of the season. Btw.
It is a legitimate concern that a first round draft pick who stands 6’10” can’t get playing time on a team that needs a PF. But sure, “maybe next year.”

Thanks for your impression, that makes sense with Pop's history but it's so unsatisfying as a fan. I mean if he played enough minutes and wasn't good then you bench him and send him to the Gleague with a list of things to work on, but in reality we honestly truly don't know and with a short Gleague season, the opportunity to get reps was brief this year. I feel like it's difficult for players to improve without playing. His hand injury was such a bummer too, specially because it will likely affect his shooting practices. I am hoping he can still play in summer league though.

I am legitimately concerned and kind of upset that the Spurs didn't play him because even though a lot went on with COVID and the short Gleague season, how can we realistically expect improvement from him next year? He barely played as it is. Him getting 10-15 minutes a game and not embarrassing himself would be an improvement over this year. It's just not a good feeling to have. I suspect his offensive game is super raw and that is why he didn't play. The Spurs were very offensively challenged to begin with without him, so it would make sense Pop would bench him if offensively he's super raw. In that sense not having the full Gleague this season screwed him over.
We shall see what happens next season. Hopefully his hand is well for summer league.

Well, if DDR and Rudy leave this off season, it'll look kinda silly that Luka's development was slowed in order to give those two maximum minutes in a season where the best possible outcome was maybe an 8th spot... it doesn't make sense to me. If there'd been a full G League season and Luka had a chance to average 20/10 and compete for G league MVP, that would've been cool, but he played 6 games down there and then sat on the bench watching DeRozan audition for the part of an outdated 90s baller who doesn't play the right way and isn't over himself.... I'm just not sure what that accomplishes.
I don't know how you can use the playing time against luka when pop is the coach. We won't know if luka is a solid player until he gets a regular role. The spurs are used to burying bigs, boban, mahinimi, splitter, and overplaying veterans. Old people get mad stubborn and the front office is super weak since daddy holt left.

Eh, I feel like this is a situation where a few bad apples can ruin the bunch.
For every person who is rude, racist, or just plain disrespectful to the players and the people around them....there are 1000 other fans who show up, buy some beer/soda and hot dogs, and enjoy the game responsibly.
Unfortunately, it's the douchebags that really tend to stand out.
We have season tickets to Longhorns football, and there is a guy who sits directly next to me who spends the ENTIRE game bitching. He comes all done up in his orange and white overalls, Texas hat, foam finger...and spends the entire three hours yelling and cussing about how shitty the team is playing, how fucked up the refs are, etc. This happens EVEN when the Horns are winning or playing well.
We often bring my young niece and nephew to the games, and on multiple occasions we've had to tell him to watch his language or keep his mouth shut.
I just don't understand why anyone would want to spend that much time and money just to be that miserable. Win or lose, going to a game is supposed to be fun.

Oh yeah, he's in the Spurs game day threads I've noticed.

Smart is gone tbh that's why he didn't hesitate to tell the truth. They're gonna trade him and he knows it, they probably told him already. Even though he's a douche on the court, he plays hard and i wouldn't mind having him on my team tbh.

Look for the Clippers (my bet is on Marcus) to try to injure Luka tonight. That team is full of scumbags who won't simply take a defeat graciously, so they'll try something.

Clippers C/F Serge Ibaka is expected to miss tonight’s Game 3 vs. Mavericks due to lingering back issue, sources tell @TheAthletic (https://twitter.com/TheAthletic/) @Stadium (https://twitter.com/Stadium/). LAC is down 2-0 entering pivotal contest in Dallas.

smh we can't have nice things in this league. Looks like Clips will win this and won't surprise me if that faggot Adam Silver makes sure they win Game 4 tonight.

and Luka apparently injured his shoulder in first half - has a heat wrap on it while on the bench.
