i think there's a better chance of getting people elected who will make strides toward that than just wishing all the rich people will privately fund it.no no, our only hope is that people with angelic temperaments will all act like angels in unison. anything else is tyranny.

You're just a tad shy of Boutons and Cosmored, but still a solid echo chamber member.

That this is post hoc reasoning to resolve the cognitive dissonance from getting spanked repeatedly.

You know it isn't true and are just trolling here. Meh.

I will always change my mind from a good solid argument supported with evidence.

That kind of thing can seem "echo chamber" like when one is actually inside a cult. "but I showed him my cult propaganda meme, why didn't that work?" :lol

i've never disagreed with this. one thing we could also do is have more immigration judges so we can process more cases faster, ie expand the amount of legal immigration. we should also criminalize and enforce employers who hire illegals, something which isnt heavily emphasized right now

i dont think the border wall serves as much more than a symbol

Yeah. The milquetoast take nobody disagrees with. Like anyone here is actually arguing for open boarders.

He’s still got some wiggling to square his charity vs government take. Guessing he’ll attempt to rectify it with…stop putting words in my mouth…I never said the government didn’t serve a function here…

It's inevitable that this law is going to be found unconstitutional and repealed. The good news is that it will also set a precedent for other States trying to pull the same shenanigan.

At best, this law will cause the SCOTUS to review the viability standard and come up with a new, updated limit, but the likelihood that they will do away with a constitutional right is very near zero, IMO.

:lol butthurt

The implication:

"disagreeing with the left is intelligent"

Why is this a basis for determining the soundness of any given argument? What if the left is correct or has the best policy on any given issue? or most issues? Abortion bans, a right wing policy, are fucking stupid on so many levels, both scientific and moral. Making abortions available and safe, a left-wing policy are both scientific and moral. Don't have to look farther than this thread for evidence of that.

If some group of policies is actively, provably, better, as policies commonly considered left are, then it would stand to reason that intelligent people would recognize that.

Your underlying assumption is one without evidence, and very telling.

While gone are the days where I hated the bible as much as left wing ideology (that was more Bush administration era), I'll always be an atheist and a libertarian. Only religious nutcases believe that it should be unlawful to have an abortion. That's not as bad as, but in the same league of, Islamic sharia law that both the left and the American right tend to hate and be against. Of course in Islam a woman will be stoned to death for getting pregnant outside marriage but that's the opposite extreme. Religion to me is fucked up, especially religious law ideology.

If you want to believe in god, that's perfectly fine... 1st Amendment. But don't impose your views on others.

If you're like me and you do believe in preserving the environment, not just with CO2 but more importantly with pollution, deforestation and an overall waste of resources... you recycle and reduce waste, and don't pollute, drive a hybrid car (which I do), and don't cut down trees. But I don't believe in, and nobody should believe in, forcing others to do it by virtue of big government and eco-fascist laws like they have in California. Minimize plastic waste, I'm happy with. Zero plastic bags? Fuck that shit.... I'm not taking 20 trips to bring in my groceries from the car. $4/gallon gas? Get me the fuck outta there.

If you believe the covid vaccines currently being administered are effective against Fauci's virus, then it is your body and your absolute right to get those shots, just like with gardasil, tetanus, shingles or the flu shot. If you don't? (I fall in that camp) - then you shouldn't have to, and no government body or big business (corporatocracy is an arm of government, especially in the USA) should have the right to force people to against their will. That is libertarianism 101.

Libertarianism is a failed ideology, like communism and fascism.

It fails morally, and it fails economically. It is laughably easy to shred. You have yet to have this belief system really challenged. If I am wrong, and it really is a superior way to organize a society, then it should be easy to show.

Let's get started on that.

What is the tragedy of the commons?

What is the tragedy of the commons?

The tragedy of the commons is a problem in economics that occurs when individuals neglect the well-being of society in the pursuit of personal gain

.....

Okay, but that is the essential fundamental of U.S. American foundation. If you don't like it... move to a more "everyone lives for each other" country, like in Europe or Japan or even Canada... quit trying to change America, quit trying to move America further to the left.

Libertarianism is the core fundamental ideology of Americanism.

It is most definitely NOT a "failed ideology" like communism, fascism, and *socialism (when implemented in non-small countries... i.e. it can be effective on a micro scale like Faroe Islands or even a Sweden or Norway, but NOT a very large population country especially such an ethnically and culturally diverse one such as the USA).

It definitely doesn't fail economically. Capitalism is a success as long as the fair tax laws are enforced, including on large corporations, whether traditional or innovative. The problem is the democratic party and their big biz cronies giving them big unfair tax breaks which further wreck the economy and keep the democratic party in power. They preach equality and left wing ideals but enforce them selectively. Especially amplified with big tech and Amazon paying net zero taxes. There needs to be an end to this.

I blasted the 2017-18 tax bill harder than anyone else not left of center... I agree there was a lot of terrible bullshit. I believe SALT tax should be deductible WITHOUT itemizing.

All the loopholes that allow big tech, wall street corps, etc... to basically get away with tax fraud every year by deducting mountains of miscellaneous crap as "business expenses". There should be a limit, say 25-40%, of total gross revenue that should be tax deductible by any corporation in any given year.

Reagan deregulated, lowered taxes, continued Carter's budget deficit trend, got rid of shortages (supplies, oil, etc), renegotiated trade deals and treaties, lowered gas prices dramatically, did not get Iran back (but that was a lost cause... it was Carter or bust imo), but did get Libya off our backs, did negotiate with Gorbyachev to weaken the USSR and successfully convinced the USSR to ultimately disband... Reagan armed the mujahideen/pre Taliban as a proxy to Russia, which was a mistake.

So yeah, Reagan was a mixed bag. While Carter was a complete 4 year net negative. Nixon was a strong positive but he got got for Bill Belicheat tactics, so it is what it is.

Obama was another mixed bag. his policy improved in his second term for sure, though - once he realized all his hopey changey bullshit was horse manure. Still, fuck him for tripling commercial healthcare premiums and roughly doubling out of pocket expenses. ACA is an enduring shitstain that even a GOP trifecta couldn't fix.

Reagan raised taxes significantly during his tenure. Everybody remembers the 1981 tax cuts, but he increased taxes almost every year afterwards. And that's on top of record deficit spending. Carter is nowhere near close to Reagan when it comes to using the government credit card.

Maybe true, but Carter started the debt that is now currently ~30T, before him it was virtually zero. And Reagan shored up the late 70s supply shortages, which 2021 has come to rival.

Haha funnay, but everyone knows the Nobel Peace Prize is bullshit, if ya wanna use that then forget the fact Trump won it last year with the Israel/UAE treaty, but don't forget that of all people... Mahmoud Ahmedinejad (:lmao) won the Nobel Peace Prize just months after beating hundreds of thousands of young Iranians to a bloody pulp with batons for voting against him in a rigged election in the summer of '09.

Obama didn't do shit about that, too. 2009 was our only other chance since 1979 to take back Iran as an ally instead of a forsworn enemy, and Obama fell asleep at the switch. Probably busy driving one into a sand bunker or hazard, tbh.

As long as the debt is in US dollars and internal, the amount is not really important, as it only affects inflation and inflation only matter vis a vis inflation in other currencies.

For all that money we still had an average inflation rate of ~2.3% which is exactly what it's been historically.

And Reagan didn't complain one bit about the debt. Neither did Reagan fans. He actually used it as a tool to pay for his taxcuts, which really means he shifted the burden to all Americans, because he didn't cut any spending.

Also, completely different situations about the 70s and now. There was no major worldwide catastrophe in the 70s. The supply issues right now (which drive temporary inflation) are not limited to the US, unlike in the 70s.

So you managed to look up the definition of tragedy of the commons. It's a good first step.

Solve the tragedy of the commons with a solution that is consistent with libertarian principles. Give me a working solution.

We can then move on to negative externalities, and the inevitable failures of free markets.

MSNBC legal experts surprised at Kavanaugh and Barrett 'skepticism' over Texas abortion law

https://www.rawstory.com/media-library/brett-kavanaugh-amy-comey-barrett.jpg?id=27862472&width=980&height=551

"Well, the thing that seems significant to me, if not extraordinary, is the open skepticism, if not downright hostility we've seen by Justices Kavanaugh and [Amy Coney] Barrett,"

"And with those two votes, we could see a successful challenge to SB-8."

if a state can do this with abortion rights, can't a state do the same with gun rights and other things?"
[B]
"The answer to that was about how we have to trust states to be faithful to the Constitution.

Well, if Texas isn't faithful to the Constitution here,

I don't see how we can expect that elsewhere.

That was a powerful moment in the argument."

The Repugs/Capitalists/Christian don't GAF about the Constitution. Their priorities ignore the Constitution

Letting the Texas law stands opens up a nightmarish hellscape of private vigilantism that even dipshits like these two understand the dangers of.

The backers of this law are going to be roundly disappointed. The only real question is how many of them will call in death threats for the perceived betrayal of these two justices, and if any of those anti-abortion extremists will act on that.

Trying to read the tea-leaves based on SC questions is admittedly more of an art than a science, tbh.

I'm more interested in how they come down on US v Texas. If the federal government can't rein in states hell bent on denying constitutional rights, that seems much more momentous to me. Seems the overall legal strategy in and out of the Supreme Court is to buy time for Trump installed justices to overturn Roe v. Wade.

This just isn't going to stand. It's patently obvious that if we wanted to allow States to effectively nullify Constitutional rights, then we would've done so a long time ago, and would be within a framework delineated by the actual US Constitution, not a legal technicality.

If this were to stand it would apply evenly to every Constitutional right. Just not going to happen.

I just want to thank the citizens of Texas for burning through their State's time and money with another stupid legal theory while re-affirming a women's constitutional right to choose. :tu

Because an adverse SCOTUS ruling that gutted abortion restrictions across the country + "muh babies are being killed!" is what made abortion such a compelling issue.

The current SCOTUS we have ain't issuing any ruling adverse to evangelicals anytime soon, and after decades of overturning Roe being hyped up as the ultimate end game, the GOP isn't gonna be able to just replace it with something else overnight.

Fetal "Heartbeat" Policy Kills Another Woman (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2021/11/8/2058087/-Fetal-Heartbeat-Policy-Kills-Another-Woman)

"The baby weighs 485 grams. (17 oz)

For now, thanks to the abortion law, I have to lie down. And there is nothing they can do.

They'll wait until it dies or something begins, and if not, I can expect sepsis,"

Izabela said in a text message to her mother, private broadcaster TVN24 reported.

Izabela, a 22 year old Polish woman, died from the sepsis she predicted, and

her death has sparked last weekend’s massive Polish protests against the increasingly draconian abortion laws in Poland

Polish antiabortionists are pretending that Izabela’s death resulted from a misunderstanding of the law which states that abortion is permissible if the life of the pregnant woman is at risk.

Not so.

Isabela’s doctors acted unethically and yet rationally in terms of their own self-interest.

The punishment for “killing” a fetus with a heartbeat, regardless of whether it will die soon anyway, is years in prison.

Punishment for allowing the unnecessary death of a woman suffering from a stalled miscarriage is perhaps an increasing price for malpractice insurance.

Expect more miscarriage deaths in this country when Roe is overturned.

Apology & confession from one of the architects of the Right-Wing misogynistic pro-life movement

Frank Schaeffer (http://egbertowillies.com/tag/frank-schaeffer), former Evangelical pariah and author of "Why I am an Atheist Who Believes in GOD (https://amzn.to/3EDtprT)," continues his apology tou

Schaeffer explains how a group of Evangelical Christians distorted the movement.

He said that before they deceived their followers, more than 50% of Evangelicals were pro-choice, including the likes of Billy Graham.

Ironically, Graham's son has become a stone-cold Evangelical hack."We come from a place where we have acted as if this is part of Christian theology," Schaeffer said.

"It is not.

And the second thing is is that my family, sadly, as I talk about in the book, went out of its way not to stop abortion but

to put women back in their place.

This was a misogynistic movement.

And I'll tell you something you cannot be pro-family unless you are pro-choice because if

women are treated like nothing more than incubating vessels, second-class citizens, and

this horrible burden that nature and evolution or god or whoever the creator was, puts on women.

If this is not balanced by the right to choose, we cannot have an equal society.

Women cannot have careers. Women cannot have lives."https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2021/12/8/2068166/-Apology-amp-confession-from-one-of-the-architects-of-the-Right-Wing-misogynistic-pro-life-movement

Trump was weak on immigration because not nearly as many people flooded the borders under Trump as under the two dems. Dem policy is known by people wanting to take advantage of it.

So you've established (and I agreed) that the dems lock up more immigrants than did Trump. Tear down that wall, only lock those up who cross.

But yeah, the numbers seem accurate to me.

The SCOTUS made no mention or ruling on the Constitutionality of the law yet... heard arguments, and that's it. Eventually they'll have to rule on that, and we'll see what happens then.

To set precedent so California can't pass a law to pay people to sue gun stores.makes sense, but then why did they allow the law to stand under challenge instead of granting the preliminary injunction? that move effectively bans abortion in Texas. hard to imagine they'd do the same for a CA law permitting vigilante lawsuits against gun sales.

Because it bans abortion in Texas until they make the ruling.

That's what I think too. They're temporizing to overturn Roe v Wade.

I think they're taking their time to make sure this loophole is closed. Whether they determine the whole thing is unconstitutional or if they flex some mental gymnastics and decide the SCOTUS erred 48 years ago finding that abortion is protected under the 14th amendment of the Constitution, they will need to make sure that they'll close the book on attempts of State laws nullifying federal law. That is indeed prima-facie unconstitutional, but it's made very complicated due to he fact that they also can't deny private citizens access to the courts.

This is without a doubt causing undue burden on abortion clinics in Texas, but ultimately the matter in front of them transcends abortion.

If you think about it, it's a legal loophole, and the natural and proper venue to address it is Congress via a federal law (and this encompasses more than just abortion, but any other right).

I'm not holding my breath. Why hasn't there been a federal law legalizing abortion nationwide?

Not talking about abortion specifically, but about allowing States to enact laws that put the burden of enforcement on private citizens in order to skirt liability.

In other words, States cannot dodge their responsibility/liability for laws they wrote only because they're not the enforcers of the provisions they put on them.

What this gambit is basically doing is legalizing frivolous lawsuits by fudging legal standing.

The rest should already be covered by the supremacy clause of the Constitution.

Harris County can spend public money to counter Texas’ strict new abortion law

policy analysts for the court on Tuesday advised County Judge Lina Hidalgo the county could spend public money to support groups that aid those seeking abortions — and perhaps even to directly fund abortion care.

their policy analysis office to investigate how the county could “support individuals impacted by” the ban or “otherwise mitigate the law’s negative effects.”

The county is free, the analysts wrote, to send local and federal funds to groups that provide support services — including transportation, lodging and child care — to those seeking abortions outside the state.

the county’s expected $915 million allotment of federal COVID-19 relief money may be eligible for that purpose.
