In a blistering ruling on Wednesday, a federal judge in Boston explained why he blocked (https://www.allrisenews.com/p/rfk-racial-discrimination) Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and the health agency he leads from revoking grants deemed to have any connection to “DEI” or “gender ideology.”

Health officials couldn’t define what those phrases meant at trial.

“The Public Officials simply have no definition of DEI,” U.S. District Judge William Young wrote in his findings of fact. “How, then, can the Public Officials act on ‘DEI’ if there is no operative definition of ‘DEI’? The answer is plain: they cannot, at least within the confines of the [Administrative Procedure Act].”

Calling Trump’s executive orders “rudderless,” Young found that health officials set up DEI as “some sort of boogeyman.”

In June, Judge Young ordered the National Institutes of Health to restore hundreds of grants that were terminated in the Trump administration’s anti-diversity crusade, calling it the worst case of government racial discrimination (https://www.allrisenews.com/p/rfk-racial-discrimination) he had seen in his four-decade career.

“Without a definition of DEI, they embarked on a fool’s errand resulting in arbitrary and capricious action,” Young wrote.

NIH acting director Matthew Memoli argued that research on gender identity is “often unscientific,” claiming that “ such studies ignore, rather than seriously examine, biological realities.”

But Judge Young found Memoli produced “not a shred of evidence” backing up that assertion.

“Ironically, these kinds of phrases would never survive peer review,” Young wrote.

In short, the judge said: “The public officials have decided that they are going to ‘eradicate’ something that they cannot define.”

Young rejected health officials’ argument that they were just following Trump’s orders.

“The public officials in their haste to appease the executive, simply moved too fast and broke things, including the law,” he wrote.

Former My Faith Votes CEO Jason Yates, a prominent conservative Christian activist, has pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography, months after his arrest.

According to court documents, Yates submitted a petition to enter a guilty plea on Monday with a district court in McLeod County, Minnesota.
Yates pleaded guilty to two of the eight felony counts of possession of child pornography that he had been charged with last year, in return for the dismissal of the other six counts.



My Faith Votes was founded in 2015 to mobilize millions of conservative Christians to vote in elections. Dr. Ben Carson, a retired pediatric neurosurgeon and conservative activist, previously served as the organization's honorary chairman.

Texas lawmakers trying to muzzle campus protests have just passed (https://www.kwtx.com/2025/06/02/lawmakers-approve-bill-limiting-protests-public-universities/?outputType=amp) one of the most ridiculous anti-speech laws in the country. If signed by Gov. Greg Abbott, Senate Bill 2972 (https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/89R/billtext/pdf/SB02972F.pdf#navpanes=0) would ban speech at night — from study groups to newspaper reporting — at public universities in the state.



Ironically, the bill builds on a previous law passed in 2019 meant to enshrine free speech (https://www.texastribune.org/2019/05/17/texas-free-speech-college-campus-legislation/) on Texas campuses. But now, lawmakers want to crack down on college students’ pro-Palestinian protests so badly that they literally passed a prohibition on talking.



We’re not exaggerating. SB 2972 would require public universities in Texas to adopt policies prohibiting “engaging in expressive activities on campus between the hours of 10 p.m. and 8 a.m.” Expressive activity includes “any speech or expressive conduct” protected by the First Amendment or Texas Constitution.



The overnight ban on expressive activities is unfathomably broad. Off the top of our heads, here are just a few examples of what such a policy would prohibit on campus between 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.: Meeting with other students to socialize or study, writing an email, working on a research paper, posting on social media, reporting for the student newspaper, wearing a T-shirt with a slogan, dancing, playing music, painting a picture, or praying at a sunrise service.



Wake up in the mood to write about how much you like the First Amendment? You’d better wait till the clock strikes 8. Maybe go to the campus dining hall and get some breakfast first — just make sure it’s self-service, so you don’t need to talk to anyone during the silent hours.



Are universities likely to enforce their statutorily mandated policies banning overnight speech against students engaged in speech like that? Probably not. But they could, and that shows just how sloppy and overbroad this law is.



It’s also possible that universities will use such policies selectively to crack down on disfavored speech. If administrators find out, for instance, that the student newspaper’s editors discussed and wrote an editorial ripping a university policy to shreds while on campus in the wee hours of the morning, the ban on overnight speech would provide a solid tool for retaliation.



It’s unlikely that lawmakers intended to ban students’ talking to each other overnight; that possible outcome may be due to really poor draftsmanship. Based on legislators’ statements, they clearly mean for the university policies required by the law to prohibit overnight protests. But that, too, violates the First Amendment.

The Trump administration has asked NASA employees to draw up plans to end at least two major satellite missions, according to current and former NASA staffers. If the plans are carried out, one of the missions would be permanently terminated, because the satellite would burn up in the atmosphere.

The data the two missions collect is widely used, including by scientists, oil and gas companies and farmers who need detailed information about carbon dioxide and crop health. They are the only two federal satellite missions that were designed and built specifically to monitor planet-warming greenhouse gases.

It is unclear why the Trump administration seeks to end the missions. The equipment in space is state of the art and is expected to function for many more years, according to scientists who worked on the missions. An official review (https://science.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2023-nasa-essr-fullreport-final.pdf?emrc=ad85a1) by NASA in 2023 found that "the data are of exceptionally high quality" and recommended continuing the mission for at least three years.

Both missions, known as the Orbiting Carbon Observatories, measure carbon dioxide and plant growth around the globe. They use identical measurement devices, but one device is attached to a stand-alone satellite while the other is attached to the International Space Station. The standalone satellite would burn up in the atmosphere if NASA pursued plans to terminate the mission.

NASA employees who work on the two missions are making what the agency calls Phase F plans for both carbon-monitoring missions, according to David Crisp, a longtime NASA scientist who designed the instruments and managed the missions until he retired in 2022. Phase F plans lay out options for terminating NASA missions.

Crisp says NASA employees making those termination plans have reached out to him for his technical expertise. "What I have heard is direct communications from people who were making those plans, who weren't allowed to tell me that that's what they were told to do. But they were allowed to ask me questions," Crisp says.

"They were asking me very sharp questions. The only thing that would have motivated those questions was [that] somebody told them to come up with a termination plan."

Three other academic scientists who use data from the missions confirmed that they, too, have been contacted with questions related to mission termination. All three asked for anonymity because they are concerned that speaking about the mission termination plans publicly could endanger the jobs of the NASA employees who contacted them.

Two current NASA employees also confirmed that NASA mission leaders were told to make termination plans for projects that would lose funding under President Trump's proposed budget (https://www.nasa.gov/fy-2026-budget-request/) for the next fiscal year, or FY 2026, which begins Oct. 1. For most of American history, higher education was dominated by men. But over the course of the last four decades, male dominance on campus has not just attenuated; largely unnoticed in the broader culture, women have started to outcompete men by a long stretch.


Women began to graduate from high school and college in greater numbers than men in the 1980s, and to obtain a majority of doctoral degrees in the 2000s. The knock-on effect for higher education has been enormous. Undergraduate institutions in the United States currently enroll (https://aibm.org/research/male-college-enrollment-and-completion/) 8.9 million women, compared to only 6.5 million men. In 2021, men received just 42 percent of all bachelor’s degrees in the United States. The last time the gender imbalance among American undergraduates was similarly stark (https://hechingerreport.org/an-unnoticed-result-of-the-decline-of-men-in-college-its-harder-for-women-to-get-in/) was at the end of the 1960s, when about three in five college students were male.


These changes are extremely visible on all kinds of campuses. Community colleges, historically black institutions, and big public schools are now heavily female. So, increasingly, are the country’s most selective private universities. Women make up (https://www.ivycoach.com/the-ivy-coach-blog/ivy-league/gender-differences-discrimination/) the majority of incoming students at every Ivy League school except Dartmouth.


If they were to admit applicants without considering their sex, the best schools in the country would end up with incoming classes that have an even greater predominance of women than they already do. So, largely unnoticed by the public, they have started to embrace a solution to this supposed problem that is simple, effective, and manifestly unjust: affirmative action for men.

Transgender patients of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles secured a win this week after the U.S. Department of Justice agreed to end its efforts to obtain personal and medical information of more than 3,000 young patients.


Last summer, the federal Justice Department announced that it sent subpoenas (https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/department-justice-subpoenas-doctors-and-clinics-involved-performing-transgender-medical) to more than 20 medical providers that offered gender-affirming care for minors. At the time, the department said it was doing so to investigate “healthcare fraud” and “false statements.”


Seven families whose children have received gender-affirming services at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles sued in November to quash the subpoena to protect their information.


The department never provided evidence of fraud, said Khadijah Silver, director of Gender Justice & Health Equity at Lawyers for Good Government, one of the firms representing families in the class action lawsuit. The hospital did not not turn over the requested documents.
“It was basically a fishing expedition,” Silver said. “Without any probable cause, they did not have the authority to be seeking medical information.”
The DOJ and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles did not immediately return requests for comment.
The department subpoena demanded the hospital provide a large range of documents, including patient intake forms, insurance claims and “documents sufficient to identify each patient (by name, date of birth, social security number, address, and parent/guardian information) who was prescribed puberty blockers or hormone therapy,” court documents show.

Aggies continued to put innovative research into the field of immersive gender studies in the ensuing decades. Starting in 1947 freshmen cadets were “required to wear lipstick and rouge and skip to class like girls on the week before Bonfire and the big football game [with the University of Texas at Austin]” by upperclassmen, according to a paper by A&M professor emeritus Jonathan Smith. When administrators tried to crack down on the practice, freshmen wrote in to The Battalion, A&M’s student newspaper, arguing for their right to “skip and wear makeup, and thereby earn ‘the privilege of saying they were True Aggies.’ ”

That experience was fresh in Lazo’s mind when a Japanese American friend playfully asked him what he’d do without all of his buddies and suggested, “Why don’t you come along?” So he did.



Lazo told his father he was going to camp, but was evasive. By the time he arrived at the Manzanar War Relocation Center, it was too late—and his father did not ask him (https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2007-may-27-me-then27-story.html) to come home.



Manzanar was one of the 10 prison camps where Japanese Americans spent the war. Located at the base of the Sierra Nevadas, it was prone to dust storms that swept through the flimsy barracks. The camp offered few comforts, but some of Lazo’s friends were there. He attended school and got a job delivering mail around camp. He also forged lasting bonds with Issei (first generation Japanese) internees, who looked after him until he moved into a friend’s barracks. In August 1944, after two years at Manzanar, Lazo was drafted into the Army. Though his goal was to attend the Military Intelligence Language School, an Army program (https://www.history.com/news/wwii-japanese-linguists-nisei-internment-camps-plan-z) that taught Japanese to second-generation Japanese soldiers and trained them to use their language on the ground as translators and intelligence workers, he ended up fighting in the Pacific Theater instead. The Trump administration is dropping its appeal of a federal court ruling (https://apnews.com/article/trump-dei-schools-lawsuit-ruling-education-department-4c1dbb5f7b3997ba78c17b25a935fb3f) that blocked a campaign against diversity, equity, and inclusion threatening federal funding to the nation’s schools and colleges.
The Education Department, in a court filing Wednesday, moved to dismiss its appeal. It leaves in place a federal judge’s August decision finding that the anti-DEI effort violated the First Amendment and federal procedural rules.

The National Park Service has removed visitor brochures from the Medgar & Myrlie Evers Home National Monument. Among the anticipated changes? No longer calling his murderer a “racist.”


Edits to the brochure have removed that reference to Byron De La Beckwith, according to Park Service officials, who asked not to be named for fear of retribution. Other edits include eliminating the reference to Medgar Evers lying in a pool of blood after being shot.

Now, a Florida A&M University law student says those restrictions are having a direct impact on student organizations even during Black History Month.


Aaliyah Steward says she is in her final year at Florida A&M University College of Law, and she has encountered obstacles while trying to promote Black History Month events for the Black Law Students Association.


According to Steward, certain words were flagged during the approval process for event flyers.
