Duren looks great. Unbelievable Charlotte sold him so quickly and cheaply. I doubt they even announced he was available.
I was never onboard with Duren at #9. That said, getting him at #13 for a protected pick from a contender and taking back one year worth of Kemba Walker (around 8/9 M) was a HUGE steal for Detroit. Wish we had done that.

Sharpe looks much smaller than advertised, I don't think he's any bigger than our own Wesley & Branham. I'd expect him to be able to shoot it well enough, and he can definitely jump (had a nice block the other day), but shooting well and jumping high is far from what makes you a top young prospect. The Blazers took a HUGE risk, when there were much more proven prospects, who were even younger. We'll see, but so far I'm VERY skeptic of him being worth of his no. 7 pick.

It’s only summer league but man Banchero looks like the best number 1 pick since LeBron 😂. Other than maybe AD. As Spurs fans we should be glad he went out at East and didn’t end up in the Spurs division with OKC or Houston.
The lack of spacing in college really seemed to hide a lot of his talent which is his one on one scoring and his playmaking/passing. He’s blocking shots at the rim, guarding people out on the perimeter.

Ivey injured his ankle.
Ivey looks special. More so than any other rookie so far. Was excited when it was possible spurs might move up for him.
I like keegan Murray, but this is why you don't draft or prioritize need over talent. Giving away Haliburton, and then skipping on Ivey because of the roster make-up could end up being Franchise changing.
Still early obviously but both of those guys look special and kings could have had both. That would have been such an exciting backcourt and sold plenty of tickets in helping build a new brand.

It was tough to watch him shoot all those 3s but the rest of the game came so easy to him.
His ability to guard big or small on the perimeter was impressive.
They ran him exclusively at the 4 yesterday too so I think he pressed a bit to impress the Hornets brass and show that he can be that for the team moving forward.
On a side note, Scottie Lewis, their second round pick from last year and close teammate, was also seriously injured (leg fracture) from earlier in the day in practice which seemed to affect the whole team’s morale too.
Look for him to be more focused in the next game.

I think he's really going to be something by the second half of Year 2.
He has something that's unbridled and always ready to burst.
All he needs is refinement. And I think he'll do it.
Shoot- Primo is already, after 1 year, showing significant improvements in his handle (which everybody and his momma was worried about), shot (I guess he's figuring out his new shooting style that won't injure himself) and an ability to defer and then immediately go into go-to scorer mode.
Which was great to see.

Bulls Knicks just started
Wanna get a look at Dalen Terry and also curious how Keels looks. Scouted both pretty hard for 20 and 38 ranges respectively iirc. Going to be the biggest what could've been if Dalen Terry does well and Branham flops. I was targeting Terry at 20 so the two kinda have a Vass/Hali relationship. Will be interesting to track but both seem like about a wash.
Montero, Sims, Grimes, McBride all guys I'm hoping do well.

Why is that relevant? it's not like we passed on Dalen Terry anyway... he went #18 and we took Branham @ 20, so what's the point in revisiting the choice?
We did pass on Haliburton, but this is NOT the case...

07-10-2022, 05:23 PM
I was wondering if Bran would help push Terry into range for 20 in combo with other potential reaches and it worked out the other way around. There is a universe where Spurs might get Dalen Terry instead so I'm looking at the 2 with that perspective a bit for fun in a what could've been sense. Not sure the official consideration on Terry, just saying I scouted him in that range because he might've fallen around SAs picks there and been avail to consider picking.
Nothing crazy though, I agree it's a slightly different situation than Vass/Hali but still, the draft was a very fluid situation and with just a few different twists and turns the lay of the league could shift drastically and I'm glad it didn't because even with small sample size I've liked the look from Bran compared to Terry. That may be a future discussion of a steal with consideration of production at 20 vs. 18 since it's so neck and neck. That whole range was pretty fluid in mocks and those names were quite interchangeable there so there's def a sense of "what could've been" amongst those commonly mocked names in that range.

A summer to forget: Watching the game last night (SA/HOU) and it occurred to me that who, in theory, should be our top three players were out for various reasons. Primo and Lil Weezy were last years picks and again, in theory, should be more advanced than the other squad members. Than Sochan comes down with the 'rona and he is done.
What looked like it would be a competitive summer league team now looks pretty meh.
I know winning is not as important or even necessarily strived for but I still don't like losing even these scrimmage type of games.
Barlow, Days and of course Wesley all look interesting. Just have to wonder, what could have been.

Boy, are you going to be unhappy this year. If you can’t handle losing SL games, you should probably get some sort of counseling. The ONLY things we’ll probably be able to take away from this year are player development and draft positioning.

this year and many others tbh.
wesley looked fatigued but still showed flashes. i also think he suffered the same woes that primo experienced running the point in that he wasn't playing off ball and had to deal with the absence of any high screens or picks. but, unlike primo, blake can at least get to the basket. he just needs to learn how to finish (although he does draw a decent amount of fouls) and dish out. a little more muscle mass will also help him out.

SGA at the helm, with Mann and Giddey from 21
But reloaded in 22 with Chet, Dieng, Jalen Williams and Jaylin Williams.
Plus stuff like Wiggins and Poku if you can get it to work. And Dort is looming whom I like but not sure I'm enamored with him as much but still something producing and an interesting possible contributor.
Even Earl-Robinson was interesting to follow in school though not sure he's clicking yet in the pros

Yeah J Davis seems like a dodged bullet now and saying that as someone who liked Davis and was predicting him as the pick at 9. Wanted Sochan the most and thrilled with the pick personally.
Just overanalyzed it in your poll thread with Wright saying "We will pick BPA, even if that is a guard" which in hindsight seems like just a preemptive screen for dumping Walker all along. Very pleased with the potential from Sochan. I was strategizing before the draft that there were so many good guards around 20/25 that you could use 9 on Sochan and still back up now needed depth behind Vassell amid Walkers presumptive departure as well. Ended up happening and that's great!

Tony got blocked a lot early, first season plus some. He developed the tear drop, and from that he worked out a burst to the rack to almost place the ball off the glass without letting it go, making it virtually unblockable. Your flaws early in your career don’t have to stay with you.

Steph Curry's Summer League average was 17pts, 4.6 rebounds, 4.2 assist, only 35% FG and 34.5% from 3. Good but not as good as Anthony Randolph, Anthony Morrow and Cartier Martin, all averaged more than 20 points plus. I don't know where those other 3 guys are, but Steph just won his 4th ring and pretty much changed the landscape of modern basketball. Sochan is more valuable than Eason in a team setting, like the playoffs. But in a pickup game where it's mostly everyone for themselves, Eason will likely have the edge.

Should be noted that Eason is two years older than Sochan. Hopefully we get to see him play soon because Primo's been a disappointment as far as lotto picks go. Wesley is a classic late 1st Spurs pick that will probably develop into a decent player after some time in G-League. Might be seen as a steal in a year or two.

I said this shit over and over before the draft. He’s gonna get his shots blocked a lot in the NBA. People were infatuated with this dude. The tape was clear as day when I watched it.
Same. Did not want. But who I did want, Keegan is showing out. And a couple mocks had him falling to us which gave me unreasonable hope. which didn't last long at all, lol.

For a lot of players the nba test will Be a lot different.
And even after that we need to wait 2-3 years to have a better judgement on players.

not in ST land. timmy would have been labeled the second coming of brad daugherty after getting dominated by ostertag in his summer league debut.

Summer league is basically trash unless you are a scoring guard. It’s a bunch of players trying to Jack as many shots as possible to get noticed.

This is actually a much exaggerated media story. I actually bought tickets and sat courtside for this game. It's true that Ostertag outscored Tim, but Tim still scored in double figures and looked good. Tim got into foul trouble and may have fouled out, I don't remember. But I left the arena excited about Tim, not worried that he would not be good. He has always looked like he belonged in the NBA and that Ostertag, a vet, had a good game against Tim means nothing. Tim played a solid game per usual and if you could rewind and watch it, you'd see he was just fine.
Tim's stats versus Ostertag: Tim 14 points on 6 of 10 shooting, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks. Ostertag "outplayed" Tim by scoring 21 points on 7 of 12 and 10 rebounds, no assists, and 5 blocks. Again, confirmed Tim fouled out. So if Tim wasn't in foul trouble in his first summer league game against a 2nd year player that was a starter for his time, then Tim probably outscores and outrebounds him. We just need to put the rumor that Tim had a bad summer league to bed.

But, see, that’s objective thinking, and not what happens on ST. People here, had this happened now, would have freaked out.

Didn't Tim also play that whole summer league left-handed?

Well I think the problem people here have is not realizing that Tim had 4 years of college experience and a refined game when he came into the league. He had physically matured too. So he came into the league ready to dominate. But a 19 year old kid? If Tim had played summer league at 19, he would have been schooled too. The only teenage kid that I saw dominate was Lebron, and that includes Kobe and Garnett. And Lebron was not built like a normal 19 year old. Expect 2-3 years to come into their own. But you are right, Spurstalk fan thinks if they can't be MJ in 3 summer league games with a week or two of practice, then they aren't going to be good.

i've read the article and seen the box score. in all honesty, jermaine o'neal was the one who actually outplayed timmy by a wider margin. as duncan said: "Jermaine (O'Neal) destroyed me. He was with Portland, was real young ... and Tag threw my stuff into the first couple of rows a few times."
the point is that ST's hyperbole would have applied to tim back then as much as it does today.

If Branham cant drive past NBA level defenders and athletes its actually pretty close. Offensive role player who struggles on defense. People forgot that Marco made almost 50 million in career earnings starting in 2007.

He already looks like he can make moves to get to the basket, on top of his apparent shooting, and he's not even practiced attacking the basket yet. He's going to be more than Beli.
He's at least a Finley, barring injury.

Agreed.
I was really hoping to see what Primo and Sochan could show. Sochan hasn't played a lick, and Primo looked pretty poor before COVID knocked him out.
Wesley has been fun to watch...definitely some potential there and I like that he isn't holding back anything.
Branham has been a bit disappointing. Has the body of an NBA player but has to learn to play like one.
If the Spurs don't sign Days to at least a 2-way, they are idiots.
We'll see what the 5th game brings, but I expect more of the same and more scrubs getting playing time.

I don't see Michael Finley at all with Branham. Doesn't have the speed, quickness or leap ability that Mike had.
He'll have more of a chance of becoming a Heild, Belinelli or Herro - type gunner off the bench, IMO.

If he hits his ceiling maybe he'll become a player similar to Michael Redd (fellow Ohio State alum). Obviously, a right - handed version, though.

Effort seems to be there but his rotations and tendency to try to overplay help defense look like he just needs lots of coaching. Spot on though, his offensive game looks to be potentially very nice.

Sochan's former Baylor teammate Kendall Brown looking good... went to the Pacers @ 48... big (6'6" w/out shoes), very athletic, skilled, smart... if he develops a shot will drastically outperform his draft position. Could have used him, TBH.

Don't know much about him, but if nothing else, height (7'1"), 3P% (40%) and age (19) alone should peak anyone's interest... but his FT% is horrid... 44%??? dude shoots almost the same from 3... still, must have some very evident cons for someone that young, tall, and with that ability to shoot 3s to go undrafted.
