I wholeheartedly agree with this. If there's one mistake that's easy to make, is this. The core isn't ready, and they'll burn assets prematurely in vain. I would agree with making peripheral moves that suit Wemby, like getting a veteran PG (I'd like Derrick back), another center to bang in the paint and preserve Wemby, hopefully 2 way wing with reliable shooting (I'd like a Trey Murphy). And take advantage of whatever opportunities come our way. Meaning you field a competitive team while you keep adding pieces and developing the young guys.

I've said it a few times already tonight. We need to build like OKC did from 2007 to 2009. Lose a couple years and score a top 3 prospect in each of the next 2 drafts. Build a perennial, young contender very quickly that way. Look how close that city and franchise was a championship in 2012, only for bone head Sam Presti to fuck it up royally because he didn't want to pay the luxury tax or part with Perkins.

In the NFL, if you land an elite QB on a rookie contract you go all in to win now. In the NBA, one guy doesn't make a bad team great. He can eventually make them mediocre, but he's still one guy. We saw what sophomore Durant and rookie Westbrook did in 2008-09. Start the season like 3-37 and get our good old friend PJ Carlesimo the axe.

Facts. Trading Dejounte in hindsight was brilliant. Sold high and stock-piled multiple FRP’s, along with the DeMar, Jakob, and Josh Richardson trades. We now have our (hopefully) cornerstone franchise player as well as a plethora of draft capital moving forward. This really couldn’t have worked out any better for us tbh. Holt will get his flowers, but Brian Wright deserves a ton of credit for this. He got a lot of shit from Spurfan including myself when he was first hired because he was an unproven commodity. But outside of the Primo mess (which no one could have foreseen), he’s absolutely hit it out of the park thus far as our GM with these trades and choosing not to remain in NBA purgatory Play-In status. Hopefully that continues with the upcoming draft picks and potential trades and what not. But the Spurs suddenly look to have a bright future with Wemby, Sochan, Vassell, Malaki, Tre Jones, Zach Collins, etc. Makes me excited for the future of Spurs basketball, something I couldn’t have said just a year ago. Pretty fkn awesome tbh.
