Might have to check out SL this year. I don't think Wemby plays but hopefully Branham/Wesley and this year's crop of rookies are in it.

Timmy played summer league, but Victor is still playing and has some international stuff scheduled. I was on the 'why shouldn't he play' bus until I saw how busy he is gonna be.

Yeah with as busy as he is this summer, I can't imagine he plays in summer league. Maaaaybe he practices with the summer league team (or perhaps he just attends the practices) but I doubt he does much more.

If he does play, though, I'm making that trip to Vegas :lol

I don't think Wemby should play. Between the French league playoffs and the FIBA World Cup, he'll be too busy this summer as it is. The latter should serve as his de facto summer league.

Besides, we already have plenty of other prospects to watch. Branham, Wesley, the second round picks. Maybe even Champagnie, Barlow, and Bassey (if he's healthy) could suit up.

Tune in for his next one: June 2nd noon EST

I expect our young players on beast mode with the Wemby fever, Blake, Malaki, Barlow. The leash just got shorter

I’d be checking one of those games for sure.

I was joking but also announcing what's gonna happen (as I already did last week in the wemby thread). NBA announced that Wemby would there for the "NBA con" event (if Timvp wants a selfie), but no way he's playing in the summer league. He could play till end of June in the french league POs and WC preparation with french NT starts end of July. He'll take July off.

very odd if true (sochan article suggesting he's going to participate in summer league). only real reason i could think of is they legit wanted to try him out at point guard for an extended run

Shouldn’t be that surprising. Mulitiple former FRPs have had at least a short stint in SL after their rookie years, including DeJounte. Sochan didn’t play at all last year. If we can get our 2022 Three Musketeers out in Vegas, things could go very well in SL for the Spurs.

Good find. My guess is the team wants to get him reps since he missed the end of the season. They probably want him to focus on getting his shots up and work on shooting in a game situation.

dejounte didnt have much of a role as a rookie and was a very late first rounder. like, i wouldnt be surprised at all to see Wesley or even Branham in summer league. the last time we were surprised by a summer league participant it was probably Kawhi after his rookie season, and he was clearly too good for it. was pulled after 2 games iirc

Must as well include D’Artagnan (Barlow) on that list. The rookie showed some glimpses of a modern day big man. Last years batch could be a real good year of drafting (an signing undrafted) for the Spurs.

Yeah I guess I have less problem with the workload now because he's young, but I remember hating when Manu was constantly doing international stuff instead of recuperating. I don't even give a shit about my own country's basketball team.

Friday 7th vs Charlotte - 8p ESPN
July 9th vs Portland - 7p ESPN2

So that first game could be Wemby vs. Brandon Miller and that second game could be Wemby vs. Scoot.

My guess is those are the only two summer league games Wemby plays. (That especially looks like the plan because those following two games are on NBATV and not on ESPN.)

So we might see all the 1 year players?

Jeremy Sochan
Malaki Branham
Blake Wesley
Dominick Barlow
Julian Champagnie

Then add our drafts and invites;

WEMBY
Sidy Cissoko
Jabari Rice
charles bediako
Erik Stevenson

Spurs better have a good coach for these guys

SpursFan86

Definitely the most hyped Summer League in Spurs history. Imagine Wesley/Branham/Sochan/Wembanyama will all be in the starting lineup for at least the first game if I had to guess. I’m sure Wemby and probably 1-2 others will get shut down midway through but still.

Throw in a few of the other guys like Barlowe and Cissoko and we legitimately have like 6-7 guys that could be with the main group playing together in the regular season.

spurraider21
06-23-2023, 05:35 PM
obviously will be thrilled to watch wemby... but this will more so be a test to see

a) how sochan's shooting has been coming along
b) how easily branham can score against this competition
c) if wesley looks like a point guard
d) if champagnie's shooting from last year was real

im sure barlow will look good against this competition, i really think his evaluation will come down to big league games

Apparently, Wemby was always going to Vegas from July 7-9 to appear at something called the NBA Con at the Mandalay Bay hotel.

There will be tremendous pressure from the league to have him participate in Summer League. Likewise from the media. You don't bring a generational talent into the league and hide him away for months if you can get him in front of the public in Summer League.

He'll play in Vegas. It won't be because of pressure, but because it's what Victor and the Spurs agreed was the best thing to do. Spurs don't really care about league pressure because of television. Remember them packing up 3 starters and a top reserve and sending them home in advance of a NT game in Miami? Made Stern look stupid when he fined them before the game, and they almost won anyways.

Good. As I’ve stated in other threads, Wesley is the guy I’m keeping my eye on the most this Summer. He’s got as much potential as anyone on the team not named Wemby with his physical gifts. Word is that right knee soreness that ended Jeremy's season isn't yet 100% so they'll keep him out. In the above videos, his stroke looks a little better. That hitch is still there but he's getting his guide hand off of it quicker so it's not as much of a two-handed shot anymore.

As a Spurs fan, I would really love it if Blake Wesley, Malaki Branham, and Jeremy Sochan all solved the biggest flaws in their respective games by October. However, I don’t consider it “underestimating” not to count on it happening.

nobody said they will do that. But we basically have 11 players who will all add things to their game. If your entire rotation improves individually and the team doesn't tank that can add a bunch of wins

Good. As I’ve stated in other threads, Wesley is the guy I’m keeping my eye on the most this Summer. He’s got as much potential as anyone on the team not named Wemby with his physical gifts. If he can improve (considerably) at finishing contested shots around the basket, he could be a really good player for us moving forward. He just has to do it. He’s got everything else.

Wesley has a great chance to get better. He seems to be a hard worker and really wants to stick in the league. I like the friendship he and Sochan and Branham formed as rookies.

You can't teach a guy with great decision making skills to blow by his defender. He came into the league with a chip on his shoulder. I'm super excited to see him play this year.

Branham will get his shots effortlessly in SL. Not sure what he'll get out of SL, unless they experiment with him as a primary ballhandler or just put on a display of getting in position and jacking up 3s.

Wesley I'm more interested in seeing how or if he has improved over the last several months.

Cissoko curious to watch how he looks competing against SL players

Wemby will be nice to watch play but honestly would rather he just not bother with the summer league play and just practice with the squad.

Im watching Wesley the most outside of the bigger ones like Wemby etc…lots to be excited about and watch but I want to see if Wesley has improved at all. He put on muscle and said he worked on finishing etc…

Want to see that in real time, want to see those defensive pops we saw at times this last season and want to see some improvement regarding half court decision making. Really interested to see how he looks and if he will improve enough to earn real minutes

For sure - he’s just the one though that is a first round pick, will have a contract decision coming up and team need is there and opportunity. So he needs to show something with a team option coming up and the train hopefully leaving the station on moving towards a playoff team soon-ish

Yeah, it's crazy how people don't understand the word "Potential" when we draft guys with that label you have to understand that is easily two but probably three year process. For me I am looking at his ability to finish at the rim and how he does breaking down his man and what reads he makes taking it to the rim or passing the ball off to an open man. Also, looking to see if he can slow down his game he had only one speed last year needs to pick his spots when to hit the gas

Wesley has a huge variance in outcomes, if he learns to finish at the rim and/or pick his spots, the sky is the limit. If he doesn't, he might be out of the league in a couple of years. But it's definitely a story I'm very interested in following and I'm rooting for him, seems like a great guy.

Latrell Sprewell was one of my favorite players as a kid. If he can be that sort of player, I'll be ecstatic. Having said that, I am definitely willing to give him more time if he needs it to develop. I thought he was great starting off last season and wonder how it would have went for him had he not hurt his knee a few games into it. I think he was really confident and ready to go, but the injury put him back a bit. Really excited about him. If he can improve all those things he mentioned, he can be great.

As for Sochan, what is going on with his knee? How is it still sore? What is the injury diagnosis (anyone know)? Doesn't sound good if it's still sore as his season ended almost three months ago.

#1 think for julian is just going to see if that 3pt shot is real

summer league isnt always the best place to showcase that since the offenses arent run nearly as well as they are in the big leagues, and guys like him typically require setup to perform. in any event, summer league is a pretty small sample size to look at a guy's shooting %

if he can play at or close to the level he was with us last year, he'd be worth every penny of his contract.

Always hilarious to watch the lack of structure and dumb turnovers in summer league, with the general dominance of old dudes / guys who've played in the league before. Miami looks semi organised, which is a huge accomplishment.

Jovic has looked much better - being strong enough to play 4 makes a lot of sense for him. (Watching Miami like a prospect hunt game, as I think we're possibly a salary dump / third team in a Dame to Miami trade, and we'll try and get something for taking on money).

He was a pretty darn good player IMO. He helped the Knicks get to the finals in 1999 (I'm guessing you remember that) and then when he went to Minnesota, they made it out of the first round for the first time in the KG era during Sprewell's first year there. He was a pretty athletic player with a fiery competitiveness. Even though he choked out PJ Carlesimo (Warriors head coach at the time) during an argument heated practice, I remember reading Pop tried trading for him years later when he was with the Knicks. I'm not sure who we would have had to have traded to get himas I don't remember the details, but the fact that Pop wanted him on the Spurs shows how highly Pop thought of him and his competitiveness despite some character issues he might had a few years prior. I think Pop became friends with him during Sprewell's first two years at the Warriors as Pop was still an assistant coach there back then. I was also a huge Allan Houston fan back then too. I liked Houston with the Pistons and also the Knicks. Would have liked either or both of those guys on the Spurs.

obviously will be thrilled to watch wemby... but this will more so be a test to see

a) how sochan's shooting has been coming along
b) how easily branham can score against this competition
c) if wesley looks like a point guard
d) if champagnie's shooting from last year was real

im sure barlow will look good against this competition, i really think his evaluation will come down to big league games
Wesley still doesn’t look like a point guard

champs shooting continues to impress

i knew Barlow would look good against summer league scrubs, but kai jones, as bad as he is in the nba, is an nba talent. But the midrange jumper being that much a part of his game is not something i saw coming at all

im not expecting sidy to get big league minutes anytime soon until he has an idea of how he expects to get points in the nba aside from transition dunks. He has game but he’s not there yet. Really hope he’s on a two way and just spends another year in the gleague

I think the flopping penalty is a little too convoluted. I would just have the penalty be a tech against that player which does count towards ejection. One free throw for the other team, play on.

The possession thing is strange. That means if the refs determine a flop during a stoppage in play the other team might end up with the ball when play resumes.

Maybe inspired by soccer where players who flop may get a yellow card, notably in the rectangle area when they try to get a penalty. Ironic when you know how flopping and faking pain or an injury is cultural in soccer. Silver probably wants to prevent that, when you see Lebron acting like he got hit in the chin in the POs while it's pure simulation.

imo asking refs to make the judgment call on the spot is kinda rough. they should have the league office handle that stuff post game and just make them punitive as hell. 1 warning, followed by longer and longer suspensions

the league used to "review" them but never actually did shit when it fell to their plate

Obstructed_View

They can't even call a block/charge. Let's give them more to think about. And the fucking SL refs can't even call normal shit. Sidy had like 5 fouls and maybe 2 were legit.

Not a Spurs summer league game. The Lakers and Jazz have sold out games due to location.

The Lakers always draw a huge crowd. They're never in Cox and almost exclusively play in Thomas and Mack because that's what the people want. When the Lakers games end the building empties noticeably.

Also, remember, you don't buy tickets to individual games. You buy tickets for the entire day which will include a half dozen different games on two courts.

Starts at 13:00 minute mark...

Earlier in the video he did say that Keegan Murray and Malaki Branham are just "...too good for Summer League,
so he's not factoring them into his rankings."

Just meant that the Vegas roster is the same as the Sacramento roster plus Wemby. Most years, the Spurs change their roster when they switch cities. This year, the only difference is Wemby was added.

There wasn't a realistic chance at 10 (not at a reasonable price anyways), I regret more not being able to get Jaquez or Whitmore at 18/20 but again it's not like we passed on him. But if Jordan Walsh pans out, THAT ONE is going to sting because he was there for the taking and we passed. Leonard Miller too but he wasn't my guy so it'd be dishonest for me to complain about him.

I didn't watch the game, but I did look at that clip and he made a bunch of open catch and shoot 3s, that's nice but I wouldn't call that impressive by itself in such a small sample. How did he play other than that?
Same thing with Scoot, he's going to be good but in the long run if he's still so reliant on the mid range at mediocre efficiency he's not going to be elite.
I actually liked Amen (whom I was always very skeptical of), his court vision and passing seem legit and it was a shame he went down with an ankle injury and won't play in summer league anymore.

I was always high on Amen even when folks here said he was overrated because of the competition he played in. Amen has this twitchy feel that is not taught and complements his out-wordly athleticism. I hope the stupid Rockets don't waste his potential.
