What's a spartz?
One of 5-8 GOP Reps who won't vote for Johnson as Speaker unless he meets conditions.
This could hold up certification on J6 -- the House can do nothing until it elects a Speaker.

This is the scenario where we could end up with Chuck Grassley as president on January 20th because the GOP caucus can't get its shit together and elect a speaker.

Is there a scenario we could elect a Democrat??

if we're still without a Speaker of the House on January 20th, we're pretty much stuck with the president pro-tem of the Senate until the House gets its shit together, elects a speaker and certifies the Electoral College tally.

Trump endorses Johnson, will the Freedom Caucus fall in line?
President-elect Trump offered his complete and total endorsement of Speaker Mike Johnson (https://thehill.com/people/mike-johnson/)(R-La.) on Monday, days before a House vote on Friday to elect a new Speaker.
“Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard working, religious man. He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN. Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement. MAGA!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social (https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/113742374534233751).

House Republicans on Wednesday proposed a new slate of rules (https://docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/20241230/119th%20Rules%20Package%20for%20Circulation.pdf) for the next Congress, including one flagged by Axios as a "crucial alternation."
Among the changes to the standing rules proposed: "A resolution causing a vacancy in the Office of Speaker shall not be privileged except if it is offered by a member of the majority party and has accumulated eight cosponsors from the majority party at the time it is offered."
In other words, the threshold would be raised (https://www.axios.com/2025/01/01/house-republican-rules-diversity-motion-to-vacate) from just one House Republican being able to introduce a measure to force a vote on ousting the House speaker (https://www.rawstory.com/mike-johnson-2670713668/) to now that member needing nine co-sponsors.

Johnson is a little more secure now
The new rules make it so that a vote on removing the speaker can only be brought if at least nine Republicans support what is called a "motion to vacate."
That is a significantly higher bar than in the 118th Congress when any single member in either party could force such a motion.
The tool was used to remove former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (https://www.axios.com/2023/10/03/house-republicans-remove-speaker-kevin-mccarthy) (R-Calif.) in October 2023. Johnson faced an unsuccessful ouster attempt in April.
Zoom in: House Democrats have railed against the change (https://www.axios.com/2025/01/02/mike-johnson-democrats-motion-to-vacate-rules), noting that for the first time in U.S. history the minority party would be restricted from introducing a motion to vacate.
"Instead of electing a Speaker of the House, they have decided to elect a Speaker of the Republican Conference — held hostage by their most extreme members," said House Rules Committee ranking member Jim McGovern (D-Mass.).

But you have to wonder if any concessions were made by Johnson. He did look a little uneasy when he came out of that meeting.

Republicans in disarray
Just terrible at governing
House Republicans adjourned last night without agreement on a rule, tried to bring the Rules Committee back this morning to figure out a way forward, failed, and are now totally adrift. Budget resolution, FISA, Farm Bill all up in the air.

“If the House Floor was managed properly, discharge petitions would never be needed,” Fitzpatrick posted Tuesday on social platform X (https://x.com/RepBrianFitz/status/2064382180084650192?s=20). “A successful discharge petition is clear and direct evidence of a poorly managed House Floor—because it demonstrates that the will of the majority of the People is being thwarted by the privileged few. Leadership of both parties have been guilty of this for years.”https://thehill.com/homenews/house/5917280-house-republicans-discharge-petitions/

...Speaker Mike Johnson has once again lost a battle against hardline conservatives for control of his own House floor — and he has no clear way out.
A small group of GOP hardliners, led by firebrand Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, effectively seized the floor from Johnson this week, refusing to allow him to move on their own party’s priorities until Republican leaders come up with a plan to pass President Donald Trump’s federal elections overhaul bill.
By Tuesday afternoon, Johnson was forced into one of the most humiliating possible positions for a House speaker: He conceded he could not regain control of the chamber and instructed members to leave Washington early. It’s the second straight week that GOP leaders have had to scrap their plans, this time losing out on nearly an entire week’s agenda.....
