One must heartily believe that Trump had this set up from the get-go, that it was always going to be this guy Johnson. The D's knew too, but played it out all the way with incessant cooperation of CNN to take the shine off the eventuality they all knew was coming with Trump setting Johnson in there.
We all know what that is children, don't we? That's American Democracy.

They have to reach for the kick out button, then spend the rest of their lives remembering me, remembering Dale. They've nary other choice. Nary.

The Dennison version of populist conservatards are simply a disease to this country. Can't die soon enough. Heck, if not for the severe gerrymandering, they'll probably be the whig party at this point, tbh...
The only thing a government shutdown does is hurt the average American. When you shut down the government over petty shit because you won't negotiate (and the Senate GOP does negotiate), you're only doing Old Joe a favor, and telling those independents that you're useless.

If conservatives had even an iota of political tact or savvy, they would be able to strongarm the entire country into a right wing theocracy. It's primed for it, there are still enough voters there to make it happen by appealing to the "reasonable moderate" AKA white voters who only need a slight cover for their moral turpitude to pull the red lever. They just need the tiniest bit of their conscience washed clean to line up behind Reagan 2.0 or whoever the fuck passes for that in the sorry-ass charisma void that is the GOP in 2023.
But... they can't even get over the lowest bar imaginable. It's right there: The Democrats have had to cast their nets too wide to pull in drifters from the far left all the way to the leaning right to win. It's undeniably a big-tent, centrist left party now that happens to give a shit what happens to the planet in 100 years (as long as it doesn't tank the economy right away to do something about it). They're in bad shape and still driven by the old heads of the party that should have been retired by now and are clinging to name recognition as the primary vestige of their power.
The GOP has every possible advantage it could want. A fractured Democratic party that's held together by duct tape and fishing line, attempting to tack left but losing just enough votes every time to make it unviable except in the smallest of increments. And they whiff it because they've sold out for who guy barely has two brain cells left to rub together and is incapable of running a coherent enough message for the party to jump on board with. No one else truly excited them until they met a swiss-cheese haircut fake tough guy who gives off the strongest "used car salesman" vibes of anyone ever to hold office in this country. A guy who thinks political strategy is pissing off the people who are going to line up to vote against him and repeatedly disenfranchising his own followers either because he's not willing to really say "white power" etc on TV, or he's making such boneheaded decisions that they're utterly indefensible and just giving up yards to the other team for absolutely no reason.
The main difference is that because the Democrats actually value intelligence, they have a lot of bright prospects on the horizon that conservatives are deeply afraid of. And conservatives, meanwhile, just tried to rally behind a guy who eats pudding with his fingers as the next potential Messiah, and he fumbled it miserably. Trickle down is real -- it's how intelligence is distributed in the GOP, who are now left wrestling in the mud with people who are one step beyond literate as the face of their party. Which is why they needed to dig so, so deep in their bag and elevate a guy who's saving grace is that he doesn't scare anyone in the party too much, and he was the last ditch effort to save them from dominating a full month on the media calendar looking like they have no idea what they're doing.
It all started to fly apart when Mitch went downhill. I hated him, but he was a masterful political mind, easily the best the GOP has had in 40 years+. He was the one thing holding it together even with Trump being a fucking moron, and he's probably going to end up being hated because he wouldn't bend the knee to a guy who wasn't within 50 IQ points of him. Mitch was the kingmaker before and they held on, even gained in demos they should have no business competing in. And now that guy is someone who thinks reciting 5 words in order is a sign of brilliance.

500/month. So lets break this down,,,if you saved even on the low end of what you should have throughout your life(which should be 15% of your salary with an employers match at 5% equating to 20% total),,,you should have a disposable income of roughly 80k/yr without touching your principle for the rest of your life if you averaged 50k for at least 35 years of working,,,rule of retirement is,,,if you arent making your age in salary,,,you are fucked. So if youre 50,,,you should be making 50k/yr,,,if your 60,,,then 60k/yr,,,ect....so 500/month health premiums are fine with me.

Wait until Johnson moves to cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Then you will see the boomers fucks realize they fucked up.
Back in 2018, Johnson told the audience at the American Enterprise Institute that he believes Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid need to be cut.
The specific proposal you are referring to was to raise the retirement age to 69, not to cut current benefits. Considering that life expectancy is like 20 years longer than it was when the 65 age was enacted I don't see that as being unreasonable.

In New York and Illinois, Democrats made big gains. In each state, they erased four Republican-leaning districts and created three Democratic-leaning ones (each state lost a seat due to population decline). New York’s new map will have 22 of 26 districts leaning to the left of the national average, and Illinois will have 14 of 17 tilted to the left. One potential hiccup for Democrats is that a lower court judge struck down the New York map, but so far the state’s high court has stayed that decision, and it’s not clear if it will go into effect.
In Oregon, which is gaining a seat due to population growth, Democrats drew a map with five Democratic-leaning districts and one Republican-leaning district — an improvement for them over the 3-2 status quo.
In Nevada, Democrats turned a map where three of four districts leaned Republican to one where three leaned Democratic.
In New Mexico, which had two Democratic-leaning districts and one GOP-leaning one, Democrats wiped away that Republican district in an attempt to create a 3-0 map.
That amounts to wiping out 12 Republican districts and creating 11 Democratic districts — an enormous impact on the overall map.

democracy and republic arent mutually exclusive
democracy is broadly a system of government where the state power is ultimately vested in the people based on the will of the majority. the people ratified the constitution. the people elect representatives. the people can get representatives thrown out, etc. the electoral college kind of being the elephant in the room
democracy doesnt mean everybody votes for everything. thats a "direct democracy", where there are no representatives acting as proxies to the people
a republic is just a form of government where there are representatives who vote on policy measures on behalf of the people. its basically synonymous with representative democracy
the "we arent a democracy, we are a republic" talking point has always been frustrating to me

He made massive cuts to income and capital gains taxes using Laffer as cause. That is like quintessential supply side policy.
He was willing to change his mind in the face of a tanking 1983 economy but he very much so believed the nonsense. That Regan/Bush pragmatism is what is missing in the modern GOP.

Oh, I'm not denying that Democrats have gerrymandered -- the evidence is obvious. You could, tactfully, make the argument that if they didn't they would risk losing the entire country to it. If the courts aren't going to step up and stop it, you either take the low road or you lose. If one team is goaltending/committing pass interference on every play, at some point your defense isn't going to be able to compete with what the other team is doing.
Both teams are dirty here for sure. As is often the case, though, the Democrats have dirty hands, the Republicans are quite literally rolling around in it and slathering it all over themselves. That's my perspective. And I do think it matters. I don't think you can argue for a clean conscience about it, or state that you are innocent/free of the thing, but the order of magnitude with which you indulge in it matters, as does the frequency.
It also feels a wee bit more sinister considering how the GOP segregates voting blocks given the history of black/minority oppression (and, by extension, voting suppression) in this country. Obviously that's more of a philosophical argument than once with any legal heft, but we are discussing morality here.

We can never know what went on in his head but he did use Laffer as justification and he did raise taxes back in 1982/3 when he tanked the economy.

The solution is to get rid of the single member district.

I'm not sure where you find issue with this statement. The US is not a Democracy. At best it is an indirect democracy and technically is a Constitutional Republic.
Democracy is a system of government, and of course the US has the oldest democracy in the world. And for the bolded, the term you're looking for is "representative democracy".

But yeah his xenophobic stance on things does certainly still ring true.

Most of the right-wing posters are just repeating a talking point, but the point of “America is a republic, not a democracy” is that it’s not required in the system for it to be truly representative of the will of the entire population. A republic can rest on minority rule through creative restriction of the franchise if that is what is necessary for the “common good.” Rule by the righteous.

Pretty much. It's like "States right" or "Independent legislature" or whatever other concoction that only applies when a (R) is involved in some anti-democratic or unconstitutional move to artificially inflate the minority.

I am completely for this.
Me too.
Republicans still can't pass a spending bill, another government shutdown showdown is shortly forthcoming over the CR.
The CR that is now before Congress, and which is supposed to fund the government through mid-March, started life this summer as a sparse twenty-page document whose centerpiece was providing disaster relief for those who suffered from Hurricanes Helene and Milton this summer.
Somehow, by some process of mystical agglomeration, twenty pages mushroomed into 1,547 pages. I pause so that you may marvel. This embarrassing pile of verbiage dropped just a couple of days ago. Congress is supposed to scrutinize it instantly, since a vote is due to be taken before Congress breaks for Kwanza, et al., on December 20.
Why the rush? Congress has known about the deadline for months. But if you plop a 1,500-page verbal turd on everyone’s desk a day or two before recess, you can hope they will just say “yes” so they can go home for the holidays. “The urgency,” as Department of Government Efficiency appointee Vivek Ramaswamy observed, “is 100 percent manufactured & designed to avoid serious public debate.” Bingo.
The bill does include $104 billion for disaster relief for those who suffered from hurricanes this summer. But it also includes many, many other provisions. One news source noted that the bill includes a “modest” raise for congressional salaries. “Immodest” would be more accurate, since the sly buggers in DC slipped in a 40 percent pay rise for themselves. Forty percent. This simulation was undertaken by trained drivers. Don’t attempt it at home. “How can this be called a ‘continuing resolution,’” DoGE co-chair Elon Musk asked, “if it includes a 40 percent pay increase for Congress?” Inquiring minds want to know. As the commentator Ben Weingarten observed, this monstrosity is “a Continuing Resolution in the sense that the Swamp has resolved to continue spending us into oblivion.”
But the bill is also a sort of prophylactic. It not only spends money; it also aims to prevent outsiders from looking into how it has spent money in the past. Accordingly, the bill includes provisions that would prevent Congress from investigating Liz Cheney and her one-eyed January 6 committee. (Item: the House “shall quash or modify any legal process directed to the provider for a House office if compliance with the legal process would require the disclosure of House data.”)
The CR also seems to have gotten a boost from Big Pharma. It explicitly forbids the secretary of health and human services (here’s looking at you Bobby!) from revising the “vaccine injury table” and further excludes compensation for anyone who might have been harmed by the Covid vaccine.
Criminals, the bill stipulates, should no longer be called “criminal offenders” but “justice-involved individuals” (it sounds so much nicer). Moreover, the CR extends funding for the “Global Engagement Center.” That sounds innocent enough. “Global Engagement” is a nice phrase, right? But in fact, as Ramaswamy observed, that anodyne-sounding agency is a “key node of the censorship industrial complex.” “The Global Engagement Center,” David Sacks notes, “was originally created within the State Department to combat ‘foreign disinformation.’ The Twitter Files revealed that it was actually censoring Americans. It would set a good precedent to disband a department that abuses its authority that way.”
I wish to associate myself with Sacks’s understated recommendation. The Global Engagement Center is an activity of the State Department that is currently being sued for its funding of the Global Disinformation Index, a British group that encourages advertisers to flee media outlets of which the guardians of the Narrative disapprove, including the Washington Examiner, RealClearPolitics, Reason, the New York Post, Blaze Media, the Daily Wire, the Federalist, the American Conservative and Newsmax. In short, this “Continuing Resolution” is primarily a bid to continue the globalist, anti-Trump Washington consensus that has undermined the sovereignty of the people and the prerogatives of our constitutionally-guaranteed liberties.
In the past, Continuing Resolutions have always eventually prevailed. This time? Donald Trump is not yet the president, but his influence is already felt everywhere. One of his boldest domestic initiatives is DoGE, not a Venetian lord but the coyly named “Department of Government Efficiency,” an independent initiative headed by Musk and Ramaswamy. Their stated goal is to trim $2 trillion per annum in government spending. We’ll see how that goes. But they have taken the lead in opposing this partisan wrecking ball. Musk alone has been posting more than 100 items a day on X criticizing the initiative. As of this writing, the bill is foundering and Mike Johnson, the hapless and probably soon-to-be-retired Speaker of the House, is in weepy panic mode. Stand by.
