It’s distressing how long it has been since any significant update.
I saw a report from a few days ago saying it would be “months” more.

He had a stroke. In some cases, you’re bed ridden and working your way back. It’s not going to be fast.

He's 75, months is the best case scenario...if we're talking daily stuff.
Getting back to flying every other day and coaching a basketball team? I don't think it will happen.
Hopefully Pop recovers enough to coach a few more games at the end of the season to get a proper send off.

Sounds like a lot of people on this board wanted word salad to win.
He did…
I really wish some of you would turn off FOX news and pick up a book.
Anyway - hope Pop is doing well. I would be shocked if he returned to coaching. From a sports history perspective, it was a great run.

My guess is that a "proper send off" is not wanted. Pop probably views his HOF enshrinement as the proper send off, and something for the fans is the sort of pomp and circumstance he doesn't care for (which is too bad, considering the support and affection the fans have shown him over the years).
This does go to show who Pop and the Spurs view as their constituency, their stakeholders. The need/want for privacy is admirable, and is usually driven by who you view as your stakeholders. For a random person, that will usually be a person's family and friends and probably their employer (who will inform the right people in the organization to the extent that it is appropriate).
For political leaders (say, the POTUS), the entire nation is a stakeholder which is why there is always a push for health records of the POTUS to be made public and privacy is forfeit.
Celebrities often view their fans as constituents, and will release information to put their fans at ease.
I don't think Pop or the Spurs view their fans as constituents, I think they view them as customers... and that's kind of telling about the organization, tbh (for better or worse).

Part of it probably is Pop seeing the current team (coach) thriving and doesn’t want to do anything to stop the momentum. It’s a joy of the parents to see their kids doing well and he can retire peacefully. I think Pop wanted to right the organization back and it seems his efforts succeeded. There’s really no reason to be back, just maybe in a Pat Riley-type of management which I would completely embrace. Get well soon Pop!

Mild stroke or not he still suffered a stroke. Hope he has a timely recovery, but at the minimum I think he will recover for most of, if not all of the season.

I'm as conservative as they come... I'm appalled that anyone would wish harm to their fellow man. I sincerely hope that Popovich recovers soon. IDC if our political views differ. The best American value IMO is our individual right/freedom to hold whatever worldview we see fit. We don't all have to agree, but we need to at least learn to disagree without being disagreeable.
Anyone with a brain can acknowledge that Gregg Popovich has brought incredible value to our beloved franchise.
Get well soon coach Pop!

You're kidding, right?
What "point"? That the slightest hint of politics is responsible for a 48% (non-checked) drop in viewership, instead of the many, many other things currently wrong with the NBA product, like a lack of offensive and defensive variety, or stretched-out and commercial-ridden games, insanely obnoxious gambling ads, and the unbalanced and offensively-overpowered shootout nature of most games?
It's so completely off the mark that I'm surprised you even took it seriously. But I guess we really live in an age where even the wrongest takes can be spun into some "hidden truth" for conspiracy theorists to jack-off over.
Not to mention Musk's pathetic addition, trying to spin a coherent argument into "foaming-at-the-mouth" dismissal because that's the only retort he can come up with, other than "who-is-this-guy"'ing one of the most iconic and well-known coaches in NBA history.

Yes, the league absolutely lacks offensive variety. There was a Bulls game last week that cracked 100 attempted 3-pointers...
Defense is not as bad, but of course follows suit with the min-maxxing of the league.
And the truly imbecilic thing is to pretend like the average person who's stopped watching the NBA did so because of Pop's rants or something, instead of the declining product.

I don’t believe people understand that the nba is expanding their revenue streams much more than the other leagues. Football is unpopular anywhere outside of the US. Baseball is popular in the Caribbeans, Japan and Taiwan. Hockey is only popular in Canada, Russia and some Scandinavian countries. While the nba is popular throughout the world, maybe outside of Central Asia and certain parts of South America. American TV viewership is not a huge focus, especially with the nba moving more and more of viewership to streaming platforms.
The average age of nba fans are younger than baseball and football fans, so moving to streaming is natural. NBA also are selling highlights heavily not to promote the league but to promote products. Sponsorship dollars are huge for the nba and ancient trilobites are still looking at tv viewership as the health of the league as if it’s still 2005. NBA is making record revenue year over year since the early 80s, with the only dip coming from 99, 12 (lockout seasons) and 21 (COVID).
Also, to think that the league is suffering from some widespread dip in popularity due to one coach going off on trump is hubris. The world doesn’t make every single decision based on trump. People just watch sports. It’s given that the US is about as split as it has ever been, so if the nba is suffering from going left, wouldn’t the nfl and nascar suffer from going right? By the same token, wouldn’t the nhl and mlb suffer from having no stance at all?

We're not 10-20 years ago where you could use sport for social/political reasons. This era is over but some are late to the party.
People all over the world has emancipated themselves and don't wanna be treated like kids who need to be told who's good/bad or what we should think.
It has nothing to do with having different opinions or being uber sensitive at anyone's in particular, but with the PRINCIPLE itself of using a sporting platform to sell/lobby for your side, whatever this one is.
Pop is living in the past where political correctness was a thing.
People want sports to remain what it is, just sport. Not a political tool

What?? No they fucking haven't :lmao:lmao We live in arguably the dumbest, least critical-thinking, least individual-thoughtful era of humanity. People are dying to have someone (Social Media, of whatever political spectrum you favor) tell them what to like and what to think. When's the last time you've heard good, in-depth, non-regurgitated analysis, tbh? Ah, so they want players and coaches to "shut up and dribble", you say? Sorry pal, Laura Ingram has you beat by 6+ years (https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/02/19/587097707/laura-ingraham-told-lebron-james-to-shutup-and-dribble-he-went-to-the-hoop). Funny how some people defined braveness only by serving in the military. I find a teacher teaching in difficult neighborhoods braver than most soldiers, only 10% of US soldiers saw combat.

I have a pretty high stress job myself, and returned after a minor stroke, but I'm not in my 70s and my stroke was very minor. Pop is both old as fuck and sounds like his was a lot more significant.
It took me a few months to "feel right" again, but now I'm better than ever. But again... I'm not anwhere near my 70s and my role (high stress as it is) pales in comparison with that of a professional sports coach/executive. Someone needs to talk some sense into Pop.

Early to mid November was about the worst possible time to be conducting a search for a long-term replacement for Pop. There's only half a season left, I don't see a reason to replace Mitch now. Let him finish the season, perhaps with some help from Pop and a sendoff, and hit the hiring circuit hard in April-May.

Returning to coach is possibly what motivates him to improve and keep going. So that's cool. Everyone needs a purpose. Just no idea, though, how he'll do. And if he's not ready, will anyone tell the emperor he's not wearing any clothes? The situation is fraught with uncertainty. Obviously, a bad situation for a team in need of structure and direction.

Ok so Pop only coaches a few games earlier this season, 3? He's nearly 80 years old and were already at the half way point of the season. Playoffs and play in looking unlikely.
Assume he doesn't make it back for this year yet recovers by the start of next years training camp and season? Do you see him continuing again? Would you want him to continue again? If so for how long and what would the point be?
I'm a known Pop hater thats no question around here. Just what good do you all think its doing having this old guy around but not around? Mitchell trying to coach but there's this old guy in his ear telling him things? What good is it having a coach this age that isn't coaching but is sort of coaching? The end happens to everyone in any profession.
Assume Pop sits out the entire year which is seeming more and more likely. What good would it do for him to coach next year if he's healthy enough? It's only delaying the inevitable.
So does anyone think he will be here next year? Does anyone think he should be here next year? The clock is ticking. The season is half way through. Next year will be here before we know it. In the last few years a lot of decent coaches have been taken off the free agency list. Soo, what's the point him continuing? When its time its time. Eventually you gotta tap the 80 year old guy on the shoulder and say thanks but not anymore.
Honestly at this age and in this health. If he comes back its kind of like having another intermin coach, yet that coach will be nearly 80 and in bad health. Nothing good can come from continuing

For the best, on a simply human level. It would be a huge mistake to put a 76 year old stroke victim back on an NBA sideline. POBO with nothing more than the expectation of 10-20 hours a week if he wants it, otherwise... let's get his name up the rafters and move on.

I say give Mitch a chance next year. I think he can be a good coach if he doesn't have to always look over his shoulder.
1. I’m sorry, but why? Why ‘give him [another] chance?’ This isn’t a feel-good charity. Hell no.
2. He’s had forever this season, and we’re one of the worst-rebounding teams in the NBA. The players aren’t developing. If your interim coach has you fielding the ‘team’ we’ve seen this year, you NEVER waste ‘another’ year ‘hoping for the best.’ That’s an invitation for other teams to tamper with Wemby and have him in a Lakers uniform in a few years. You don’t gamble your franchise on a bad bet hoping it’ll work out because Mitch is ‘nice’ or for some other inexplicable (obviously non-performance) reason.
3. Even if you could ‘excuse’ everything this year because ‘Pop’s pulling the strings’ (you can’t, and it’s frankly stupid to hope things will magically turn around - see supra), Mitch shouldn’t have let him, and the Spurs could tell Pop to let Mitch try ‘coaching for the job’ the rest of this wasted season. See if Mitch can improve an inferior roster (sans Wemby and Fox) and make it ‘better’ to any discernible degree. I wouldn’t hold my breath though. Pop isn’t ‘making’ Mitch turn the team into one of the worst-boxing-out teams in the NBA.
4. Nothing prevents Mitch from ‘trying out’ somewhere else, like a mid-level college or something. You don’t risk wasting another year of Wemby’s career and the future of a billion-dollar franchise on Mitch.
5. This is particularly true when Wemby / Fox / Castle / good future picks should allow the Spurs to attract so many better / more likely to succeed options - like Hurley, etc.
I could throw other reasons out there - and believe it or not, I’m not trying to put YOU down - but this IDEA is terrible and needs to die, before it eventually sends the Spurs to Vegas. If you think it can’t be that bad, look at the Mavs. It can always go south much faster than you realize.

I say give Mitch a chance next year. I think he can be a good coach if he doesn't have to always look over his shoulder.
I can appreciate the sentiment of being the “good guy” organization that we historically were able to be (having a core of Tim/Tony/Manu enabled that) but continuing down that road is the path to ending up as the Sacramento Kings. The front office has to become results oriented again and stop hiring/promoting “our guys” at every turn who are completely unproven.
Mitch basically had a season to win the job whether he knew it was up for grabs or not and he failed to do so. His best month was his first and I would argue it’s been all downhill after that. I understand Pop has been in his ear the whole time but if that was swaying Mitch’s decision making to this degree then that can only be considered a negative towards Mitch’s case to have the job permanently. Ime wouldn’t let someone coach by proxy through him as interim coach or not.
Unfortunately for all, Mitch likely has the job since the FO likely would consider him "entitled" to a training camp and some input on the decision making for the roster construction etc (provided Pop truly does retire as head coach).
I expect him to last somewhere between 1/2 and 1 and 1/2 seasons (as head coach).
