View Full Version : Legit Dilemma: Would trade Sochan for Amen Thompson?

Both can't shoot to save their lives but Amen's shooting form look less broken.
He was pretty much injured in his rookie year but this year he has taken the leap and show his potential.
Amen definitely has the better stats in pts, rebs, asts, stls, blks than Sochan and he has the potential to be the best perimeter defender during Wemby's era.
Wemby will be the best interior defender.
Amen will be the best perimeter defender.
Flagg will be a hybrid and a mix of best of both world.
Will probably need to throw in 1 or 2 first round pick with Sochan for Houston to consider.
I will say yes.

Houston is not trading Amen. Spurs are not trading Sochan++ for potentially getting better version of Sochan. The only big trade Spurs need is for primary scorer, who can create his own shots and plays guard position

OP did say that it would be Sochan + picks for Amen, not straight up, so they clearly recognize the imbalance between the two players.
So… Sochan + 2 FRP for Amen? It’s an interesting question, but I think both teams probably say no. For the Spurs, Amen just isn’t the kind of player we need to burn two FRPs to acquire. For the Rockets, he’s going to be the core building piece for them, so they also say no.

I’m just hoping for Flagg. He would fit in extremely well with Wemby. He’s like a Sochan with IQ, athleticism, and offense (ok so nothing like Sochan). But he’s not afraid of contact and to play dirty. Let Wemby play like a guard and put Flagg down in the middle and run the offense through him. Unstoppable

I don't even think they would have included Amen in a Giannis trade when things were looking really dark for Milwaukee early in the season. He's the one guy in the league I could see wrestling a DPOY away from Wemby in the next 5-6 years without Victor having to miss a bunch of games. On his current trajectory he screams allstar but if they ever teach him a jumpshot you'd be talking best player on a title team level of star.

Amen's median outcome right now with even average development is basically a bigger slightly better Iguodala. In fact, he's more impactful than Iguodala at the same age already with no jumper. If he shoots even league average from 3 I don't even know who the comp would be. Scottie Pippen or something.
I'm trying to think who Houston would actually trade Amen for at this point. The list looks something like this:
Wemby
SGA
Luka
Tatum
Jokic
probably Giannis
Healthy and motivated Zion with no weight issues
I honestly do not think they trade Amen for Ant at this point
Man, Houston has far outdone the Spurs with team building. Add the Haliburton vs Vassell debacle and the only real prize we've gotten is Wemby. Helluva prize, granted, and worth. But doesn't bode well for our future team building.

I think from a young core standpoint, it's closer than you think. Basically what it comes down to is a massive fuckup in the 2021 draft. Rockets took the guy we all wanted in Sengun and the Spurs, well, we all know what happened
Take away that, and it's
Wemby, Vassell, Sochan, Castle
vs
Amen, Tari, Jalen Green, Reed Sheppard, Cam Whitmore, Jabari Smith
I'm not very high on Whitmore at all. Tari vs Sochan is about even considering the age gap. Green's playing better than Vassell but I think all told it's about even. Sheppard and Castle are rookies but so far it looks like Castle's got more promise. Smith looks kind of average for a top 3 pick.
Spurs busted on Branham and Wesley, but the Rockets also busted on 1st round guys like Garuba, Josh Christopher, and TyTy Washington
Houston basically just chose to get good quicker and Spurs for some reason want to slow play it.
EDIT:
Oh yeah, and Zach Collins. Fuck Zach Collins.
EDIT2:
Jesus Christ I just looked at the 2021 draft again. Cade, Mobley, Barnes, Franz, Sengun, Trey Murphy, Jalen Johnson as potential star level players. Green, Kuminga, Suggs, Kispert, Grimes, Cam Thomas, Day'Ron Sharpe, Aldama as useful players. Literally half the players in the first round ended up being useful and we picked Josh fucking Primo in the lottery - a 6'4" guard with 0.6 AST:TO, 6.5 AST%, 1.3 STL%, and 54% eFG%, and 3 dunks on the year. Doesn't pass the analytics test. Doesn't pass the eye test. To this day I still wonder what the rationale was.

I haven't really watched him play that much. Is he really that good in all other areas of the game (apart from shooting)? I never would have thought he'd be a number one option on a title team even with a jump shot.

He's an absolute monster defender with PG skills and unreal athleticism. Feels like the sky is the limit for the guy's potential.
I paid closer attention to Amen when Sean started talking him up. Sean's about 90% on his takes of other team's players, though obviously, super homer when it comes to the Spurs.
I agree he's got the potential to be a perennial AS. I dunno about a #1, but man, would he be the #2 we're dreaming of.

It's truly fascinating how the "what have u done for me lately" factor is powerful on people tbh...
I love what I'm seing from Amen, but I also remember how was his rookie season or the fact that he's surrounded by so much better players than Castle that allows him to focus on his tasks.
Castle has been moved around, positions, roles, rotations, starter or not AND has to play next to some of the worst players IQ of the league and a team that doesn't even have a proper coach.
It's a bet, I think both players will become very good, AllStar at least but I wouldn't swap Castle for Amen even today.
Castle's ceiling is much higher imo, he has a better feel for scoring, better driving ability and touch on offense. Also as bad as his shot is, it's not as bad as Amen's
Amen is ahead on defense but I don't see why Castle wouldn't become elite in that area too considering his floor is already above average for guys his age.

The emergence of amen Thompson may mean that Houston will consider trading Jabari smith Jr, who I’m still very interested in. He’s a bit of a bust but his fit with wemby looks great on paper.
Long athletic 4 who can shoot, defend and create some what. He’s not elite in anything and his offence has been a bit of a disappointment, but his skill set is intriguing at he is still very young.
I would be up for trading 2 unprotected/lightly protected FRPs with a lottery protected for him, plus salary but not sure if the rockets will consider that. At this point I’d think the rockets are looking for players who can contribute to their core, of which we have none.

I like Jabari smith Jr. But he is kinda frozen out of Rockets offense. He kinda now is this 3&D, where the D is more interior, off ball shot contesting. He hasn't shown the ability to self create and is clearly not being marked by the opponents best defenders.

Hard disagree on that. Castle using starter numbers only might be more of a discussion. Overall tho I think Amen was a bit better.
Edit to add: Castle has a tougher year 1 assignment admittedly, playing guard in the NBA has a steep learning curve (look at Fox year 1 to year 2 for example). Amen is probably the best non big disruptor on defense in the NBA already, and that ability was showing in his rookie year as well.
