...and effing it up big time
Extending this further, it’s also Hegseth intentionally humiliating the military out of resentment at only being an alcoholic National Guard major limited in both intelligence and management skills that couldn’t truly make a career out of the military.

muzzling Stars and Stripes
Max D. Lederer Jr., the longtime publisher of Stars and Stripes, announced his retirement Tuesday, ending a three-decade career at the news organization amid Pentagon efforts to expand oversight over its operations and content. He was the second full-time civilian to hold the position of publisher, taking the helm in 2007. The job is responsible for the worldwide business and editorial operations of Stars and Stripes, which includes a newspaper as well as hundreds of other yearly publications.
Lederer said he decided to step down because it had become clear that his philosophy of leadership and “understanding of the value and mission of Stars and Stripes” differed in “fundamental ways” from plans the Defense Department has for the organization. “I have thought a great deal about the right time to step aside, and I have concluded that this is it,” he said in a note to staff. “I leave with real pride in what we have accomplished together and with complete confidence in what you will accomplish next.”
In an interview, he said he did not feel the modernization efforts the Pentagon announced in March were the right ones. He expressed particular opposition to transitioning all print products to a digital format, fearing it will limit accessibility for troops. “I don’t feel that there’s a full recognition of the value of multiple platforms versus only a digital platform,” Lederer, an Army veteran, said. “There is value to being able to have a monthly magazine or an annual magazine for people who are in a transitional environment.” He said he believed the organization needed to advance into other technological fields, including artificial intelligence, but felt out of sync with “the pace and the direction” being set by the Pentagon.
“I think the right step is for me to step down, get out of the way, and let different leadership step in and continue to make this, the great organization that it is, even better,” he said. His retirement comes after the Defense Department in April fired the publication’s ombudsman, a role charged by Congress with safeguarding the newspaper’s editorial independence. https://www.stripes.com/theaters/us/2026-08-18/stars-and-stripes-publisher-retirement-22592337.html

GCC countries bet on the wrong security partner. Heavy bribes to Trump did not pan out.
According to a Tuesday article (https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2026/08/18/pentagon-evaluating-smaller-us-military-presence-persian-gulf-after-iran-war/), the Pentagon's policy office is evaluating whether to retreat long-term from the Persian Gulf after Iranian strikes (https://www.rawstory.com/iran-war-2677120484/) battered military bases. The Washington Post reported that damage to the bases presents a "once-in-a-generation" chance for the Pentagon to reevaluate its footprint in the Middle East.
The shift would leave battered bases unrepaired and move U.S. forces back, according to The Post. A person familiar with the change told The Post that U.S. Central Command is considering keeping in place shifts away from bases that were evacuated because they were too vulnerable to Iranian missile and drone attacks.
" Iran (https://www.rawstory.com/tag/iran) thinks we are in the traditional places," the person told The Washington Post. "And we are not."
The Post noted that the Pentagon's retreat could impact U.S. allies in the Gulf because they rely on the presence of U.S. forces in the region for defense. The move could leave them "unable to defend themselves against Iranian attacks," according to The Post.

looks like SECDEF has his own personal minder too
The Pentagon has not said if Mrs. Hegseth has a security clearance, although in the past year there have been no reports that she is attending sensitive meetings with foreign leaders. She has still slipped quietly into the Pentagon, including using an elevator from the building’s garage that opens directly into Mr. Hegseth’s office suite. She is in direct contact with members of her husband’s inner circle, among them Ricky Buria, Mr. Hegseth’s chief of staff
One person familiar with Mr. Hegseth’s thinking said that the defense secretary likes his wife to travel with him to keep him out of trouble. Mr. Hegseth, who has a history of heavy drinking, has himself made clear he needs his wife at his side. He often credits his “two J’s” — Jennifer and Jesus — with transforming his life.https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/19/style/jennifer-hegseth.html?unlocked_article_code=1.61A.rvUZ.W1IN C8scnUJS&smid=bs-share

Fort Stewart in Georgia is currently offering four fleeting days with Grand Theft Auto VI in exchange for two-to-six more years of service, according to CBS (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/grand-theft-auto-army-reenlistment-bonus/?ref=aftermath.site). Soldiers who reenlist between Aug 1 and Nov 14 will be granted a special pass that, per the terms of the contract, coincides with “the highly anticipated release of the video game Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6).” For now, the offer is limited to a lone battalion, but it could apparently be expanded to others.
"The idea was to have a unique incentives program that connects to what Soldiers are interested in," Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, a spokesperson for the 3rd Infantry Division, told CBS. "The command team, in conjunction with the career counselor, wanted to get soldiers excited to reenlist."
20 soldiers (of around 130 eligible) have accepted the offer.

Nearly six months after the U.S. Navy evacuated 1,300 family members from Bahrain at the start of the Iran war, officials are saying the evacuees cannot return for the foreseeable future and should find new homes elsewhere. The evacuation has left families in limbo and forced military officials to improvise solutions for support programs that were never designed to sustain a displacement lasting this long.
Some evacuees say they have spent tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket for basic living expenses. Others are sleeping on the floors of temporary housing, while their cars and furniture are stranded in Bahrain or aboard ships unable to leave the region. Many say the prolonged displacement has taken an emotional toll and worry about its long-term effects on their families’ financial and emotional well-being.
Government officials have extended and adjusted benefits to cover lodging, transportation and basic necessities. But some forms of assistance begin expiring after 180 days, or six months, forcing the Navy and State Department to scramble to come up with workarounds. “We literally have been making this up as we go, because nothing is conceived to go on this length of time,” Vice Adm. Curt Renshaw, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, said Wednesday at a virtual town hall meeting, according to an audio recording obtained by Stars and Stripes from one of the nearly 600 attendees.
Military officials have declined for months to provide a timeline for returning families to Bahrain as the fighting continued, ceasefires collapsed and hopes of a lasting peace agreement faded. Bahrain ordinarily hosts NAVCENT headquarters and about 8,300 service members, dependents and civilians at Naval Support Activity Bahrain. But the Navy drastically reduced its presence after the war began, leaving only a contingent for critical operations.

blacklisting journalists now
U.S. Central Command maintains a secret directory of journalists who have been blacklisted by the press office, according to an official with CENTCOM public affairs. The disclosure comes amid a failed war in Iran (https://theintercept.com/2026/06/11/trump-iran-war-claims-failures/), a “cover-up (https://theintercept.com/2026/04/01/iran-war-us-casualty-numbers-trump-hegseth/)” of U.S. casualties (https://theintercept.com/2026/08/04/us-military-casualties-count-iran-war/) from that conflict, and repeated refusals by CENTCOM to address questions about civilian deaths in Iran, including the killing of a family recently disclosed by The Intercept (https://theintercept.com/2026/08/18/iran-war-civilian-deaths-families-infant/).
The CENTCOM official who revealed the existence of the list threatened that this reporter could be added to it for calling the command too often.
“You’ll be put on a list of people to disregard,” Richard Allee, an executive assistant with CENTCOM public affairs told this reporter. When asked for clarification — “You have a list of people to disregard?” — he confirmed it with an emphatic: “Yes.” When asked which reporters or outlets were currently on the list, he replied: “I’m not privy to give you that information.” https://theintercept.com/2026/08/24/pentagon-military-journalist-blacklist-press-media/

A civilian geography professor was fired from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., for pushing back after department officials barred faculty from teaching that humans contribute to climate change, according to a lawsuit filed Monday. Adam Kalkstein, a climate scientist who spent 17 years teaching future Army officers, said he consistently received “outstanding” appraisals of his work.
When leadership last year imposed a ban on teaching that humans contribute to climate change, he tried to comply but ultimately pushed back, saying that it was a disservice to the cadets’ education. “It’s not a college-level course. It’s not even a high school course. Not because it isn’t rigorous; it is. But because we’re leaving out essential information,” Kalkstein said during a November 2025 meeting of the geography department with Brig. Gen. Shane Reeves, then the dean of the academic board, according to the lawsuit. “We’re only telling cadets part of the story. We’re lying to them, deceiving them. It would be like trying to teach the law without being able to even mention the Constitution,” Kalkstein said.
The lawsuit called for a jury trial; to block West Point from imposing “baseless” restrictions on academic freedom; to reinstate Kalkstein to his tenured position; and to pay him monetary damages.https://www.stripes.com/branches/army/2026-08-26/west-point-professor-fired-lawsuit-climate-change-22666987.html

Hegseth hamstrung a program designed to protect civilians against the unanimous advice of top armed forces commanders, hundreds of civilians died by US fires, so now DOD is considering bringing the program back
Shortly after taking office last year, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth polled the nation’s top commanders about cutting a program designed to protect civilians during U.S. military operations.
Hegseth had bet senior officers would endorse his view that focusing on civilian security was “woke” and out of step with “maximum lethality,” current and former defense officials told ProPublica.
Instead, every commander rebuffed the idea.
Leaders at U.S. Central Command, the Tampa, Florida-based center that oversees military action in the Middle East, pressed to keep its full CHMR staff of 16. Eliminating or scaling back the effort would “result in decreased efficiency of U.S. lethal operations due to an increased risk of target misidentification and reduced battlespace awareness,” a memo reviewed by ProPublica said.
Retired Army Gen. Erik Kurilla, who was then in charge of Central Command, and several other senior officers directly involved in combat operations had appealed to Hegseth to keep the program. They explained that it was a valuable tool, another retired general said — but “that intent was overridden.”
Hegseth gutted the effort (https://www.propublica.org/article/trump-defense-department-iran-hegseth-civilian-casualties), leaving only a handful of people to carry out the mission. It was stripped of almost all of its funding, even as the U.S. launched new campaigns in Somalia, Yemen and Iran. One official summed up the Hegseth approach as: “Bombs away!”
Hegseth’s early exchanges with the generals made clear that the civilian harm program had no future in his reimagined “Department of War.”
“No more politically correct and overbearing rules of engagement,”Hegseth would later tell a gathering of hundreds of generals and admirals (https://www.war.gov/News/Transcripts/Transcript/article/4318689/secretary-of-war-pete-hegseth-addresses-general-and-flag-officers-at-quantico-v/).
But now, after U.S. missile strikes have killed hundreds of civilians in Iran and Yemen, episodes that drew global criticism and questions from Congress, the program could soon be partially revived.
The about-face would mark a rare reversal in a department that hasn’t tolerated dissent under Hegseth and President Donald Trump. Last year’s military memos detail a delicate pushback that may preserve at least the framework of the civilian security campaign.
Current and former defense officials described the evolution of the civilian security program on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation from the Trump administration.
The Pentagon did not respond to requests for comment about the poll or the program’s revival.
The poll from early 2025, which has not been previously reported, cemented top-level military support for Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response, a relatively new program adopted after years of heavy civilian tolls in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. As part of its mission, CHMR (pronounced “chimmer”) stationed personnel within major regional commands. Officials tried to develop a picture of life on the ground in combat zones to aid decision-making on military strikes and avoid or minimize civilian harm.
In the poll, Hegseth gave commanders three options: cut 65% of staff but keep the effort operational, continue with only a small centralized office in Washington, or eliminate the program.
Nine commanders chose the first option to preserve the enterprise as much as possible, according to a memo reviewed by ProPublica. Leaders of two commands, one overseeing the nuclear arsenal and the other focused on cyber threats, declined all three options, asking to maintain the full program.

purge of top US Army officials continues robustly, leaving leadership ranks less than robust
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is blocking the promotions of four Army officers selected for promotion to one-star rank, a highly unusual move that appears to be targeting officers who worked for generals he does not like, current and former defense officials said.So far this year Mr. Hegseth has removed at least 45 officers, selected by boards made up of peers, from promotion lists. More than half of those officers have been female or Black.
Mr. Hegseth’s actions appear to violate the rules governing a promotion system that is meant to be apolitical and merit-based.
Some of the Army officers pulled from the latest list appear to have worked recently for Gen. Randy George, the former Army chief of staff, whom Mr. Hegseth fired without explanation in April. The others have ties to Gen. Christopher T. Donahue, the top U.S. Army commander in Europe, who was forced to leave the Army this summer, defense officials said.
...
Typically, Army one-star promotion lists consist of about three dozen officers.
In March, Mr. Hegseth struck four officers from an Army one-star promotion list that had consisted of 34 officers. Two of the officers targeted by Mr. Hegseth were Black men and two were women, prompting some senior military officials to question whether the officers were singled out because of their race or gender.
Beyond the blocking of officers for promotion to one-star rank and the firing of General George, Mr. Hegseth has fired or forced out a half-dozen senior officers — a generation of the Army’s most combat-hardened leaders — thinning the service’s top ranks for the next several years, officials said.
The personnel turmoil has also left a vacuum at the top of the Army (https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/25/us/hegseth-purge-army-generals.html) at a moment when it is responsible for defending troops against the threat posed by cheap drones and missiles.
The Army has not had a chief of staff, the service’s top officer, since Mr. Hegseth fired General George in April, and there are no signs that he is close to filling the position, said current and former officials. Mr. Hegseth’s choice to take over as Army chief, Gen. Christopher LaNeve, does not currently have enough support in the Senate to be confirmed, officials said.
General LaNeve, who previously served as Mr. Hegseth’s senior military aide, has expressed frustration with Mr. Hegseth’s decision to block qualified officers for promotions and is concerned this will dilute the Army’s pool of experienced leaders, defense officials said.

mandatory endocrine screening for US troops based on what, please?
The U.S. Pentagon issued detailed guidance on Wednesday for a new, mandatory testosterone deficiency screening policy for active-duty and reserve service members age 30 and older, a follow-up #to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's July announcement. (https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/hegseth-announces-testosterone-screening-us-troops-2026-07-16/)
The guidance, which is effective immediately, establishes standardized screening and treatment pathways for men and women that the Pentagon says are aimed at improving military readiness by identifying and managing hormonal and energy-availability issues.

off-label testosterone for postmenopausal troops, why?
The document lays out guidelines for when it is appropriate to prescribe off-label testosterone in women, namely for postmenopausal women with unusually low sexual desire.
Doctors have raised concerns that broad testosterone testing could lead to unnecessary, or potentially harmful, treatment, saying there is little evidence that universal screening for low testosterone among military personnel would improve U.S. combat readiness.

The policy applies to officers serving in their first shore tour with a projected rotation date of October 2025 and beyond, and is being implemented due to “personnel shortages across second sea duty billets,” the Naval Air Forces document states.

wouldn't be surprised to see Mike Johnson send everybody home to avoid a recorded vote
Rep. Thomas Massie (https://thehill.com/people/thomas-massie/)(R-Ky.) on Tuesday launched an effort to impeach Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, (https://thehill.com/people/pete-hegseth/) citing the Pentagon’s military actions against Iran.
Massie, a frequent critic of President Trump, (https://thehill.com/people/donald-trump/) accused Hegseth of launching an illegal war (https://thehill.com/homenews/house/5988459-thomas-massie-donald-trump-pete-hegseth-iran-war-critique/) that was not approved by Congress. He introduced articles of impeachment on the House floor against Hegseth for “high crimes and misdemeanors.”
Massie also took the remarkable step of making his resolution privileged, meaning he’s forcing it to the floor for a vote. By House rules, that vote must come within two days.
He argued that Hegseth violated “his oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States” and violated “his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, especially with regard to the commission of war.” He added that Hegseth has “abused the powers of the Department of Defense.”https://thehill.com/homenews/house/6090661-thomas-massie-pete-hegseth-impeachment-iran/

The Kentucky Republican read his impeachment resolution on the House floor, where he accused Hegseth of shredding safeguards intended to protect civilians during U.S. military operations.
“Secretary Hegseth thereby effectually effected the murder of civilians and abused the trust of men and women under his command by requiring them to conduct military operations within a targeted and legal review system that he had deliberately degraded,” Massie said.

New photos obtained exclusively by CBS News reveal for the first time the widespread damage and destruction of buildings and vehicles at multiple U.S. positions across the Middle East, as a result of Iranian missile and drone attacks.
The images were sent to CBS News by active service members on condition of anonymity because of rigid media restrictions within the military.
"This is major damage to our bases that hasn't been communicated to the American public," one deployed service member told CBS News. "We're standing there with our eyes closed getting punched in the face."

Other photos taken from the base show hollowed-out buildings and barracks whose shells ironically stand next to unaffected cement "T-wall" structures, which were once regarded as critical fortifications against grenade and mortar attacks but proved critically ineffective against an aerial assault.
Similarly grim pictures were captured at Camp Buehring in Kuwait, a major staging area for U.S. Army ground troops, armored vehicles and some aircraft; the post is located in a remote desert region far northwest of Kuwait City.

endocrine screening "for military readiness" is back
The Pentagon is reinstituting a mandatory testing program for testosterone deficiency among U.S. service members age 30 and older, a spokesperson said on Thursday, bringing back a program that many medical experts have described as unnecessary and potentially harmful.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has promoted the use of testosterone to improve military readiness, first announced the screening mandate in July.
Under the announced guidance, women were also set to be screened through a questionnaire and could then move to treatment for conditions related to hormonal imbalances.
In early September, however, the Pentagon temporarily rescinded the published medical guidance for the testosterone screening “to allow for updates.”
The latest move lifts that pause, allowing testing to go forward. It was not immediately clear what, if any, updates had been made to the original policy.
“Effective immediately, this guidance addresses male testosterone deficiency, establishing uniform screening and treatment pathways,” Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement.
Medical professionals have warned that testosterone, if prescribed inappropriately, could increase service members’ risk of infertility or lead to other health consequences.

Hegseth covers up more troop deaths, is he ashamed of them?
Five of the officials said there have been at least 22 military fatalities — four more than what appears in the Pentagon’s public database, known as the Defense Casualty Analysis System, or DCAS.
A sixth official, who like the others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the figures, said 23 service members have died since Feb. 28, when the Trump administration, in concert with Israel, initiated the Iran war. Not all of the undisclosed deaths are directly tied to the conflict but have involved U.S. personnel who were in the Middle East amid ongoing hostilities, this person said.https://www.mediaite.com/media/news/new-bombshell-report-reveals-more-us-troop-deaths-amid-iran-war-than-pentagon-claims/

Eight US Navy personnel assigned to the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group attempted suicide during a period that included when the ships undertook combat operations against Iran and the carrier set a modern record for its time at sea, according to a letter from the service’s acting secretary, which was obtained by CNN.
Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao revealed the number, which has not been previously reported and covers crew members from several ships that travel together, including the carrier, in written responses to questions posed by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand about the morale and mental health of the USS Abraham Lincoln’s crew. Cao wrote that no service members had killed themselves during the deployment.
The rate of suicide attempts among the Lincoln strike group’s sailors was roughly consistent with that of the entire active duty Navy in 2024, the most recent year for which the Pentagon has released suicide data.

The U.S. government is reportedly alerting millions of current and former U.S. military service members and staff that their personal information was stolen during a months-long breach of the Pentagon’s personnel records, the latest in a spate of thefts involving federal workers’ data in recent months.
A data breach notification from the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) shared on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/AirForce/comments/1wmotdr/question_about_data_breach_letter/) says that several unauthorized users exploited a security vulnerability in an unspecified file-sharing system over several months between October 2025 and mid-July 2026.
The breach exposed personally identifiable information, including Social Security numbers, alongside a person’s name, date of birth, sex, race, and other information about their military service. The notice says that the personnel records were unencrypted.
According to CNN (https://edition.cnn.com/2026/09/25/politics/pentagon-data-personnel-breach) and Federal News Network (https://federalnewsnetwork.com/defense-main/2026/09/more-than-3-million-people-affected-by-military-data-breach/), a Pentagon official said the breach affects about 2.8 million living people, and close to 300,000 people who are deceased.
The U.S. military has 1.3 million active service members as of March.

fatties and beardos beware, but Pete can't protect American bombers 3400 miles away from Iran
The US rushed over the weekend to withdraw all 12 B-1 Air Force bombers from RAF Fairford in southern England after commanders received new threats about an Iran-backed plot against the installation, two U.S. officials said on Sunday www.nytimes.com/2026/10/04/u...

Terrible idea, Pete clearly hasn't thought through the precedent he's setting for public execution by political fiat in the US
There are four countries in the whole world who do this, not a club the USA should belong to -- Iran, North Korea, Somalia and Saudi Arabia
Reportedly, none of them televise public executions

Remember, some of the earliest moral panic over how “bad” social media is came from US elected officials losing their minds about terrorist execution videos on YouTube (https://www.techdirt.com/2008/05/20/senator-lieberman-tries-hunting-down-terrorist-videos-on-youtube/). It’s kind of incredible how far we’ve come: Now the US government itself is planning to stream a gruesome execution of its own, and any platform that pushes back will likely be attacked by the president and his supporters for not being patriotic enough.https://www.techdirt.com/2026/10/09/hey-platforms-your-violent-content-policies-are-about-to-meet-the-pentagons-firing-squad/

AP: "Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who oversees the Catholic Church’s pastoral services to Catholics in the U.S. military…stipulated that any Catholic soldier assigned to the U.S. Army firing squad should ask to be excused from that duty, which he described as contrary to the teachings of the church."

what a joke
The Pentagon has named one of its own public affairs officials to run the publication Stars and Stripes, and he will keep his Pentagon job while doing it. This places a single official inside both the office that shapes the military's message, and the newsroom charged with covering it independently.https://www.military.com/pentagon-names-one-of-its-public-affairs-officials-to-run-stars-and-stripes

Death penalty debate aside, this would give them attention and make them martyrs. Pete is an unhinged idiot.

How many innocent people has Trump killed lately? I'm not sure we'll ever witness him getting justice.

OPSEC is clean
Pete Hegseth’s Department of Defense is putting troops at risk of foreign spies because of security weaknesses in the Pentagon’s $2.67 billion cellphone contracts.
A damning new watchdog report (https://www.oversight.gov/reports/audit-security-over-dows-unclassified-wireless-telecommunications-services-procured-through) exposed ongoing failings in the Pentagon’s protection of sensitive communications and location information in the military’s sprawling Spiral 4 wireless contract, despite repeated warnings about overseas espionage, as revealed by PunchUp (https://thepunchup.substack.com/p/950b4f9d-b1f8-499d-afd1-80ccfb800c68), the Daily Beast’s sister Substack (https://thepunchup.substack.com/).
The armed forces had more than 568,000 wireless lines in January, making the security of its communications a potentially enormous national security concern.
The Pentagon failed to check whether phone companies were adequately protecting sensitive data that could reveal troops’ locations and who they were in contact with, the investigators found. Officials also failed to properly scrutinize the companies’ security checks before renewing their contracts.
In a chilling warning, the watchdog said hackers could “map entire communication networks within the DoW (Department of Defense), pinpoint sensitive locations like safe houses or command posts, and expose operational vulnerabilities, significantly compromising national security.”
Investigators also found that Pentagon officials “were aware that malicious actors could exploit known vulnerabilities to intercept and read SMS messages” sent to and from military phones. Yet the department “had not issued policy for protecting text messages.”

politicizing US armed forces, driving good people out
Roughly 79% of veterans and service members believe that politicians and society areleaving veterans (https://www.military.com/veterans-find-footing-in-118-billion-rent-to-own-industry) and military families behind.
That is according to polling by grassroots veterans' organization Common Defense Civic Engagement, which it conducted in September and released in late October. Of the 731 active-duty service members, veterans and military families that responded to the survey, 48% strongly agreed with this sentiment and 15% disagreed.
"Veterans know what real leadership looks like: you take care of the people under your command and you keep politics out of the mission," said Jose Vasquez, U.S. Army veteran and executive director of Common Defense.
"Right now, nearly 8-in-10 veterans and military families say they're being left behind, and active-duty troops are telling us that politicization is pushing them toward the exit. That's not a talking point; it's a readiness crisis," he added.
Common Defense also found that 53% of active-duty service members want to separate from service sooner because they said the military is becoming more politicized.
Another 45% said policy changes or uncertainty under the current Trump administration had also made them consider separating sooner.
