U.S. President Donald Trump's ambassador to Canada is warning of consequences to the continental defence pact if Canada does not move forward with the purchase of 88 F-35 fighter jets.


"NORAD would have to be altered," U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra told CBC News in an exclusive interview at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.


He says the United States would likely need to purchase more of the advanced fighter aircraft for its own air force, and would fly them more often into Canadian airspace to address threats approaching the U.S.

B.C. premier says Alberta separatists seeking assistance from U.S. is 'treason'

British Columbia Premier David Eby says Alberta separatists meeting with the U.S. administration for financial backing is an act of "treason" and it's an issue he'll raise as the premiers gather with the prime minister in Ottawa on Thursday.

"To go to a foreign country and to ask for assistance in breaking up Canada, there's an old-fashioned word for that, and that word is treason," said Eby ahead of the closed-door meeting.

He was reacting to reports that members of U.S. President Donald Trump's administration have held meetings with members of the Alberta Prosperity Project, a separatist group that is pushing for the western province to become independent.

The group is openly seeking a $500-billion US line of credit credit from the U.S. Treasury to help bankroll the new country if they come out victorious in a referendum.

An official with the U.S. State Department confirmed the meetings, saying the department "regularly meets with civil society types," but added that "no commitments were made."

Trump threatens Canada with 50% tariff on aircraft sold in US, expanding trade war

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened Canada with a 50% tariff on any aircraft sold in the U.S., the latest salvo in his trade war with America’s northern neighbor as his feud with Prime Minister Mark Carney expands.

Trump’s threat posted on social media came after he threatened over the weekend to impose a 100% tariff on goods imported from Canada if it went forward with a planned trade deal with China. But Trump’s threat did not come with any details about when he would impose the import taxes, as Canada had already struck a deal.

In Trump’s latest threat, the Republican president said he was retaliating against Canada for refusing to certify jets from Savannah, Georgia-based Gulfstream Aerospace.

Trump said the U.S., in return, would decertify all Canadian aircraft, including planes from its largest aircraft maker, Bombardier. “If, for any reason, this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50% Tariff on any and all Aircraft sold into the United States of America,” Trump said in his post.

Trump said he is “hereby decertifying” the Bombardier Global Express business jets. There are 150 Global Express aircraft in service registered in the U.S., operated by 115 operators, according to Cirium, the aviation analytics company.

The European Parliament has formally consented to Canada's participation in the EU's Security Action for Europe programme, completing the last institutional step required under EU treaty law and making the bilateral defence agreement fully binding on both sides.

The consent vote closes a ratification sequence that moved faster than most observers expected. The Canada-EU Security and Defence Partnership was signed at the Brussels summit in June 2025. Negotiations on SAFE participation concluded in December. EU member states endorsed the agreement on 19 December. Defence Minister David McGuinty signed the formal text at the Munich Security Conference on 14 February 2026. Under the treaty process, the deal could be provisionally applied from the moment of signature (meaning Canadian companies have been engaging with European procurement cycles since February), but formal legal conclusion required parliamentary consent. It now has it.

The most direct benefit is jobs. The February 2026 Defence Industrial Strategy commits 70% of federal defence contracts to Canadian firms within a decade. SAFE adds a second market for the companies that win those contracts. That means more sustained production runs, more hiring, and less exposure to a single buyer. The downstream effects are real but diffuse. A Telesat or Kepler Communications winning European satellite contracts employs engineers in Ottawa, Waterloo, and Calgary. A Magellan Aerospace supplying engine components to a Eurofighter upgrade program keeps machining lines running in Mississauga and Winnipeg. CAE, which already operates simulation and training centres across Europe, gains preferential access to SAFE-funded contracts for pilot and operator training. None of these are overnight transformation. The analyst consensus is a one-to-two year lag before contract flow begins

The European Parliament consent vote is arriving in the middle of the densest week of Canada-EU engagement since the partnership began. On 11 May, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand was in Brussels to co-chair, alongside EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, the high-level meeting of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children. Canada announced CAD 3.4 million in new support for the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, bringing Canada's total contribution to that mission to CAD 4.8 million. Anand also signed the Convention establishing an International Claims Commission for Ukraine, making Canada the first country outside Europe to join. Canada, Ukraine, and Norway will host a follow-on ministerial conference in Toronto on 28-29 September 2026, focused on the return of deported children, detained civilians, and prisoners of war.

Anand told Euronews what the accumulation of activity represents. "Over the last year, we've signed over 20 security, defence and economic agreements around the world, and we're just getting started," she said. "The reason is that it's not just a policy response. Canada to order military plane fleet from Sweden in shift from US suppliers

Canada has announced plans to buy a fleet of early warning planes from Sweden’s Saab rather than a competing option from Boeing, as the country seeks to reduce reliance on US defense firms.

Mark Carney, the prime minister, said on Wednesday that Canada would opt for Saab’s GlobalEye, which is based on Bombardier’s Global 6500 jet. Boeing’s E-7 Wedgetail plane – which has suffered from delays and cost overruns – had also been in contention.

“With a suite of advanced sensors and mission systems, Saab’s GlobalEye will be a key resource for the Canadian armed forces to detect and deter threats across the Arctic,” Carney told a defense conference in Ottawa.

The prime minister pledged in March that Canada would take full responsibility for protecting its vast Arctic territory, after relying on decades on a partnership with the US to monitor its more than 4.4m sq km (1.7m sq miles) of land and sea, a territory larger than India.

BYD is bringing its 5-min ‘Flash’ electric car charging to Canada

BYD is preparing to bring its megawatt “Flash Charging” network, which can add about 250 miles (400 km) of range in 5 minutes, to Canada – the first confirmed deployment in North America.

The plan was revealed through a new BYD job posting in Toronto for a manager tasked with executing “BYD’s flash charging network expansion strategy and business growth across Canada.”

BYD unveiled its 1,000 kW Flash Charging system alongside the 1,000-volt Super e-Platform in March 2025, and it has already upgraded it to 1,500 kW with the second-generation Blade battery earlier this year – more than 3 times the power of anything deployed in North America today.

The automaker has built over 5,700 Flash Charging stations in China in about a year, and as we reported earlier today, it is now deploying 2.4 times more charging power per month than Tesla adds to its Supercharger network.

But when BYD announced its overseas Flash Charging rollout in March, the list covered Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific. North America was nowhere to be found.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he's "losing patience" following U.S. President Donald Trump's latest tariff hit and urged the federal government to "hit him back as hard as we can."

Canadians spent $3.3bn less on travel to the US in 2025 than in the previous year, as Donald Trump’s hostile policies towards his northern neighbour continue to incur an economic cost, new government data shows.

The research also indicates that Canadians are not bucking travel overall and instead have replaced US vacations with other international destinations, in a rebuke to Trump’s tariff regime and the president’s continued musings on annexing Canada.

“Following the change in the US administration in early 2025 and the implementation of America First policies, Canadian travel sentiment shifted abruptly,” said authors of the report published by Statistics Canada, the country’s national statistics agency.

Total US travel spending in 2025 amounted to $18.8bn, down from $22.1bn in 2024.

In contrast, Canadian spending on travel abroad, excluding the US, grew by $3.6bn in 2025, to a total of $22.8bn.

Looking at 2026 data so far, Statistics Canada said the drop in leisure travel to the US was continuing. Return trips to Canada from the US this year are at similar levels seen at the end of 2025, which saw a 27% decline between October and December, it reported.

Canada adds 75,000 new jobs in July, unemployment rate lowest in 2 years

Canada added 75,000 jobs in July, up 0.4 per cent, as the unemployment rate fell to 6.4 per cent, its lowest level in two years.

Statistics Canada's labour force survey released on Friday said most of those gains were split between full- and part-time work, as wholesale and retail trade alone added 21,000 new jobs.

The agency says employment rose for people aged 25 to 54, and mostly for women in that age group.

The unemployment rate held steady at 5.8 per cent for men aged 25 to 54, Statistics Canada says, while falling 5.2 per cent for women in that cohort.

Ontario added the most jobs of any province in July, with 52,000, or an increase of 0.6 per cent, mostly in the professional, scientific and technical services sector. British Columbia had a similar increase, with 18,000 new jobs.

Statistics Canada said the country is up 181,000 jobs since April, and 196,000 from a year ago.

July's employment rate boost follows on good jobs news in May and June.

Over the past 18 months, Canada’s new government has focused on building our strength at home, diversifying our partnerships abroad, and striking a fair deal with the United States.

Our objectives in our trade negotiations have been to:

Preserve tariff-free access to the U.S. for the vast majority of Canadian business;
Provide greater stability to our trade relationship;
Significantly reduce U.S. tariffs on our key strategic industries, so that Canadian businesses in these sectors would have the best access of any in the world;
Protect our small and medium-sized businesses – the lifeblood of our economy – including by removing the imminent threat of new tariffs; and
Maintain our flexibility, independence, and sovereignty so we can keep building the Canada we want.

We have recognised from the beginning that America has changed, and that we will not return to our old relationship. Our government understood, before many, that America is altering all its trade relationships. Putting tariffs on its closest allies and charging for access to its vast market.

We have worked in that context. To strike a fair deal that would provide the best access to the U.S. market and greater certainty to Canadian businesses and workers. Throughout, our goal has been to secure the best deal for Canadians, never a deal at any price or on any deadline.

In recent weeks, we made important progress toward improving Canada’s position as having the best deal in the world with the U.S.

However, that progress has not been enough to meet our objectives for Canadians. As a result, this evening, I have decided to suspend trade negotiations with the U.S. and have directed Canada’s negotiators to return to Ottawa. They have worked hard, in good faith, to defend the interests of Canadians throughout these negotiations up until the very last minute. However, last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal.

At midnight tonight, the U.S. intends to impose a 50% tariff on roughly $28 billion of Canadian goods. Canada will match those tariffs dollar for dollar to protect our workers and businesses.

In the coming days, the government will introduce additional measures to support Canadian workers and businesses, building on the nearly $25 billion in support provided over the past 18 months.

These actions complement Canada’s core economic strategy. From day one, we have been focused on building our strength at home and diversifying our partnerships abroad.

That strategy is working. We are advancing nearly $500 billion in major infrastructure projects. In parallel, we are unlocking new export markets for Canadian businesses. Our existing free trade deals already provide Canada with preferential access to 1.5 billion consumers, and we are on track to double that market access by the end of this year.

Canadian economic growth is accelerating, and we are on course to have the second-fastest growth in the G7 over the next two years. Our economy is creating jobs at four times the rate of the United States. Our exports to non-U.S. markets are on track to double over the next decade. Foreign direct investment in Canada is at its highest level in two decades, running at twice the rate of our nearest G7 competitor. Canada now ranks as the most attractive country in the world for infrastructure investment.

Canada has what the world wants. And we will not allow any nation to determine our future. We will set our own course to keep building Canada strong for all.

Let’s set the scene, because you need the full panorama to appreciate this shitshow. Trump had been threatening a 50 per cent tariff on roughly $28 billion worth of Canadian exports, due to hit at midnight Friday, and to do it he had to reach all the way back to Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which means the man is running 2026 trade policy on legislation written while the world economy was face down in a Depression-era gutter, all because the Supreme Court struck down his emergency tariffs in February and told the US government it now owes importers their fucking money back.


And here’s the kicker: Section 338 is a surviving organ of Smoot-Hawley, the tariff law that helped turn a stock market crash into a decade of global misery. His signature economic weapon got laughed out of the highest court in the land, so the spray-tanned Smoot-Hawley cover band went rummaging through the legal shed and came back to play the one record in history every economist on the planet agrees should never get a fucking encore. Strength, my arse. The bloke’s lost his nail gun and he’s out there trying to build a deck with a rock while calling himself a master builder.


And what mighty strategic assets is this Depression-era artillery aimed at? Hockey sticks, cement, tongue depressors, booze and certain kinds of clothing, which means the United States of America has formally declared economic war on the fucking hockey stick. If you wrote that into a satire, an editor would send it back for being too lame.


And one more detail, still hot from the oven: these are tariffs on goods flowing under CUSMA, the trade deal Trump personally negotiated, personally signed, and personally paraded around like a show pony through his entire first term. According to the reporting out of Washington, one of the actual strategic war aims of this entire 50 per cent barrage, the casus belli itself, is that Canadian premiers pulled Jack Daniel’s and Jim Beam off provincial liquor store shelves as payback for the first round of tariffs, and the big fella took it so personally that restocking the bourbon became a term of surrender. Trump demands Canadian companies doing business with the US move to America

Donald Trump sought to escalate his trade war with Canada on Sunday afternoon and issued a demand on Truth Social that Canadian companies wanting to do business with the U.S. reshore their headquarters within its borders.

His latest remarks come as Canadian officials warned that the country was prepared for an extended dispute with the U.S. after trade talks collapsed and Trump announced tariffs as high as 50 percent on some Canadian goods including dairy products and lumber. Canada has levied reciprocal tariffs against U.S. steel, aluminum and other exports.

On Sunday afternoon, the president said Canadian companies should move their headquarters and production facilities to avoid newly imposed tariffs. The duties are set to begin in 2027.

“Let all Canadian Companies that are doing business with America move to the United States, immediately. Many of them are Companies that moved out years ago due to stupid U.S. Leadership. When you move back, there are no TARIFFS!” Trump wrote.

OTTAWA, August 28 (Reuters) - Canada recorded a sharply lower C$370 million ($266.57 million) budget ​deficit for the first three months #of the 2026/27 fiscal year as government expenditures grew slightly faster than revenues, the finance ​ministry said on Friday.

The Dutch central bank says it has moved 86 tonnes of its gold reserves out of the US and Canada to London, citing “increasing geopolitical unrest”.

De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) said gold reserves held in London could be traded more easily than those held in New York and Ottawa.

“This makes it the quickest for DNB to deploy in a crisis situation,” the bank said in a statement on Wednesday.

“With this step, we have improved the deployability of the gold reserves. We assume that we will never need to deploy the gold, but it is nevertheless necessary to strengthen our resilience and preparedness,” said DNB’s president, Olaf Sleijpen.

The total Dutch gold stock amounted to 612.4 tonnes and was valued at €72.2bn ($83.7bn) at the end of 2025, said the DNB.

Before the deployment, the Dutch bank held 31.3% of its gold in New York and 19.7% in Ottawa.

After the move, each country accounted for 18.5% of the Dutch gold reserve.

Ottawa spending $4.7B on new made-in-Canada Via Rail passenger cars

THUNDER BAY — THUNDER BAY -- Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a $4.7 billion contract to build 313 new passenger cars for Via Rail on Thursday.

Carney made the announcement at the Alstom plant in Thunder Bay, Ont., where the cars will be built.

“Our rail cars on our long-distance and remote routes are more than 70 years old. They were built when the NHL had six teams. Goalies wouldn’t wear masks. The Leafs would win the (Stanley) Cup,” Carney said.

“Those old cars have served our country well, but they’re long overdue for retirement. It’s time to build new ones, to build them here at home.”

Carney emphasized the fact that the new cars are being built in Canada.

“For the first time in four decades, those cars will be produced and assembled and maintained in our country. Cars that used to be built in the United States will be built right here in Thunder Bay at Alstom, by the best workers in the world,” Carney said.

Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon called the investment the single largest in Via Rail’s history and said the project will lead to 700 new jobs.

Saab intensifies pitch to sell Gripen jets to Canada, promising assortment of benefits

Behind the scenes, though, Saab is pulling out all the stops in order to put Canada’s name on the banner.

At a recent briefing at Saab’s Linkoping headquarters that included The Globe and Mail, company officials laid out a range of benefits that Canada can expect should it go ahead with a major order for Gripen jets.

Saab had already promised a Canadian assembly line for the Gripen but had yet to detail the scope of that promise. The company is proposing to build the fighter jets in Canada from parts to finished aircraft, across a network of roughly 10 prime partners and some 250 suppliers in several provinces.

Canada would be the first start-to-finish Gripen production line outside Sweden, provided the order is large enough to justify it, Saab officials say. Canada has also been invited by Saab and the Swedish government to join Sweden’s next combat-aircraft program in the future, if the Gripen is selected.

It’s not clear at what stage and how detailed talks are between Saab and the federal government. The company’s promises come amid a growing trade rift between Canada and the U.S., traditionally this country’s largest military supplier. And Ottawa is still determining whether to forge ahead with a deal to buy additional U.S.-made F-35 fighter jets.

After walking away from trade negotiations last month, Prime Minister Mark Carney signaled he was losing interest and patience in cooperating with the U.S. on critical minerals. He said he would continue finding deals and keep pursuing them elsewhere, suggesting Washington had squandered an opportunity to cooperate with Canada.

“That is something that is a missed opportunity as a consequence of what’s happened, but we didn’t cause it to them,” Carney said when POLITICO asked about the role of critical minerals at his Aug. 22 press conference, the morning after he called his negotiators back to Ottawa.

Shortly after arriving in Ottawa in April 2025, Hoekstra told POLITICO that Trump was “very interested” in Canada’s energy and critical minerals.

Mark Carney’s Audacious Bid to Make Canada an ‘Associate Member’ of the EU

Shortly after Canada and America became embroiled in the worst bilateral trade war in their modern history, the secure phones of Europe’s top leaders lit up with a trans-Atlantic call. Mark Carney was pushing to take Canada’s relationship with the EU to the next level—a bold gambit to rewire the economic cabling of the Western alliance.

For months, the Canadian prime minister had held private conversations with almost every major European leader—from France to Italy, Germany and Scandinavia and even some of the continent’s lesser-known royals—on how to more deeply plug Canada and its 41 million people into Europe’s 27-nation club.

Carney has instructed his special envoy to Europe to scope out the most ambitious possibilities short of full membership in the EU or its common market, according to people familiar with the matter. The details are still being sketched by technical working groups for what the prime minister has told his aides will be the reorienting of an economy and a society that for half a century has been dominated by the U.S.

To European leaders, Carney has even suggested Canada take on a new title: “Associate Member of the European Union.” The EU, not known for its flexible enforcement of membership rules, is open to the idea, officials from both sides say. Alongside Carney’s established emissaries are informal advisers drawn from the worlds of finance and politics. Some are fellow members of a Book Club in Ottawa that he no longer has time to attend, who quip that they abide by the code of the movie “Fight Club”: “The first rule of Book Club,” several told the Journal, “is you do not talk about Book Club.”

Canada’s pivot to Europe is a back-to-the-future moment for a country that traded more with Europe than America on the eve of World War II. Its oldest citizens grew up as British subjects, its anglophones reading English literature like John Buchan, the Scottish novelist who became Canada’s 15th governor general. French Canadians, of course, had their own particular links to Europe.

“In those days, Canadians could be on Monday, Wednesday and Friday North Americans, the other days of the week they could be part of the British network of nations and benefit from both,” said Norman Hillmer, one of the leading scholars on North American relations.

Canada emerged from the war into a new world order of global trade shaped around the economic powerhouse of America. While Britain and Europe focused on rebuilding their shattered economies and shed far-off empires, Canadian business looked south, influenced by the dynamic consumer culture and the lure of the dollar. By 1950, 65% of Canada’s exports went to America; just 15% went to the U.K.

American colleges became incubators of a new Canadian elite, whose parents had attended British universities; by the late 60s, those campuses also fostered a Vietnam-era counterculture that was skeptical of American power.

The tractor-beam of Americanization was briefly interrupted when Richard Nixon imposed 10% tariffs on all imports—to stabilize the dollar after the end of the gold standard. Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau responded by pledging to increase trade with the European common market and its newest member, the U.K. It bore little fruit, and was eclipsed entirely when his conservative successor, Brian Mulroney won the 1984 election and began working with Ronald Reagan on what would evolve into Nafta. Canadians skeptical of integrating North America’s two largest economies wore pins that read “51st state: Mulroney for Governor.”

Ahead of the G-7 leaders meeting in Evian, France, Carney met Macron in Paris and French officials came away floored by how fast the Canadians wanted to move. “Things suddenly accelerated to full-scale cooperation on many, many policies,” said a French diplomat. Carney was by now speaking frequently with Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz, whom he knew from his time in banking, as the pair completed negotiations for Canada’s $25 billion purchase of German submarines.

In July, at the Ankara NATO summit, the leaders showcased the agreement in front of a meter-long mock-up of the submarine that German officials had flown into the Turkish capital wrapped in a protective cover that one official said resembled an Egyptian sarcophagus. When a photographer pointed out the model to the leaders, Carney quipped that “we didn’t notice it because of the advanced stealth characteristics” of the vessel.

After Carney’s somber press conference to explain the breakdown of U.S. talks and accuse Washington of moving the goal posts at the last minute, Merz reached out to the Canadian leader. As Trump was signing an executive order to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” Canadian diplomats were in Berlin for a day of meetings on defense cooperation.

“This is Canada turning from looking at itself as a North American nation to a trans-Atlantic nation,” said a senior Canadian official. “Canadians, we sound like Americans, we dress like Americans, but as a society we’re much more European.”

The first Canada Investment Summit unleashes nearly $500 billion of new investment in Canada

Canada has what the world wants. We are a superpower in both clean and conventional energy, with vast deposits of critical minerals. We are the best-connected economy in the world, with free trade deals covering 1.5 billion consumers. We are by far the most competitive country in the G7 for new business investment. We have one of the world’s most educated workforces, the lowest net debt-to-GDP ratio in the G7, and the fiscal capacity to act decisively. Since forming government, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has focused on leveraging these strengths to catalyse $1 trillion of new investment and create more growth, opportunity, and prosperity for Canadians.

To that end, the Prime Minister convened the first Canada Investment Summit. Hosted in partnership with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments) and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments), the Summit brought together investors from nearly 30 countries, managing more than $100 trillion in assets. - PSP Investments will increase its Canadian investments by 30 to 40%, an additional $25 billion in Canada, totalling $100 billion.
- The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP) will invest an additional $10 billion in Canadian opportunities across public and private markets by the end of 2027.
- Sun Life Financial will invest $5 billion over the next five years in critical infrastructure, including digital technology, energy, and transportation.

Canada’s top banks committed nearly $325 billion in new financing for Canadian businesses and infrastructure:

- TD Bank will provide $150 billion in financing over five years across five key sectors, including energy, critical minerals and resources, defence and aerospace, digital and AI, and infrastructure.
- Scotiabank will provide over $100 billion in financing over five years to support Canadian companies and projects in key sectors that will drive forward Canada’s economic growth agenda.
- BMO will invest and mobilise $70 billion in critical Canadian sectors over 10 years, including in energy and transportation infrastructure, mining and critical minerals, AI computing, and defence and security.
- CIBC will provide $2 billion in financing to small and medium-sized defence-related and dual-use businesses in Canada. Funding will be targeted to support eligible businesses operating across a range of strategic sectors, including infrastructure, energy, cybersecurity, digital capabilities, and advanced technologies.
- RBC will invest and mobilise nearly $1.5 billion to support Canadian technology companies with high growth potential. They will provide investee companies with access to commercialisation opportunities, strategic partnerships, and expansion support that are often unavailable through traditional investors.

Investment funds committed to mobilise more than $14 billion in capital to grow Canadian companies, infrastructure, and strategic sectors:

- Power Sustainable will invest and mobilise more than $10 billion for Canadian infrastructure, including power and grid, fibre and data, environmental solutions, and food supply chains.
- Radical Ventures will invest and mobilise $4 billion to launch the Radical Breakouts Fund, the largest venture capital fund of its kind in Canadian history, supporting Canadian AI scale-ups across the technology stack.

On the margins of the Summit, Bell Canada, in partnership with the Government of Saskatchewan, announced a historic expansion of the Bell AI Fabric to build a 1.2-gigawatt Canadian AI infrastructure hub in Saskatchewan. This $52.5 billion capital investment is the largest in the province’s history and is expected to create more than 4,500 jobs across construction, operations, management, and related services.

To build on this momentum and unlock even more investment, Prime Minister Carney announced the game-changing new Productivity Mega Deduction, which will allow businesses to deduct the cost of a much broader range of assets right away, including fibre-optic cable, mining property, oil and gas pipelines, software, research and development, computer equipment, aircraft and vehicles, patents, rail track, bridges, and roads. The federal government is also making immediate expensing permanent so businesses can recover these costs sooner. The new Productivity Mega Deduction means Canada’s marginal effective tax rate on new business investment will fall from roughly 13% to 6.4% – the lowest of any major economy in the world and less than half the rate in the United States.

To further unleash capital, the Prime Minister announced that Canada will seek private investment through long-term concessions to operate Canada’s four largest airports. Working with airport authorities and other stakeholders, including airlines and local governments, the federal government will retain ownership of the underlying land and assets, while also bringing in new private capital. The tens of billions of dollars of capital raised would then be reinvested into building the infrastructure that Canada needs for the next generation: regional airports, new local transportation infrastructure, and new nation-building infrastructure, including a sovereign broadband backbone that connects Canadians from coast to coast to coast.

The government also made landmark new investments in two sectors central to Canada’s competitiveness: defence and critical minerals. Through the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), the federal government will deploy $700 million in new funding to accelerate growth in Canadian defence and dual-use technologies, including $500 million across specialised investment funds and $200 million for StrongNorth, increasing the fund from $300 million to $500 million. These investments are part of the BDC’s $6 billion Defence Platform, which helps Canadian companies scale, innovate, and compete globally through financing, investment, and advisory support. The government also committed approximately $140 million through the Canada Growth Fund to support Generation Mining’s Marathon Project in Northwestern Ontario – one of Canada’s only fully permitted, shovel-ready critical minerals projects. The project will produce copper and palladium, strengthening domestic supply and building more resilient North American supply chains.

The president of the European Commission has backed proposals for Canada to become the EU's first "associate member".
Ursula von der Leyen told the European Parliament on Wednesday she wanted to work on "opening the door" for Canada, which would involve closer ties on various key sectors.


Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney last week spoke of seeking a "unique alliance" with the EU, coming as he faces tense relations with the US and Donald Trump.
Without mentioning the US president by name, von der Leyen said offering Canada some sort of EU membership was "not a partnership against anyone else, but for our common strength."

‘U.S. trade policy is damaging the U.S. auto industry’: Canada’s purchase of American cars hits new low as Trump’s tariffs backfire on U.S. automakers

A decade ago, nearly half of new cars hitting Canadian roads were built in America, but after months of restrictive U.S. tariffs, the number of Big Three autos purchased from America’s northern neighbor have dropped precipitously.

Only 28.4% of new-vehicle sales in Canada in the first half of 2026 were U.S.-built, down from 35.4% in the first half of 2025, according to JD Power Canada data. From about 2021 to 2025, the U.S. market share of new vehicles in Canada was roughly 40%.

Auto analysts blame the steep decline on a series of import taxes placed on Canada over the past year and a half, which included a 25% tariff on Canadian-made cars, a levy expected to double and apply to Canadian auto parts, steel, and vehicles on Jan. 1, 2027. Canada imposed countermeasures, including retaliatory tariffs on American-made autos, as well as on steel and aluminum.

The U.S. auto industry relies heavily on Canada, which is the largest export market for American automakers—larger than the next 10 markets combined, according to a Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) analysis published last month. Auto trade between the two countries has topped $100 billion this year, and despite the speed bumps in trade policy, Canada remains America’s largest auto market.

Yet recent trade policies are not only eroding this relationship, analysts warn, but increasing the likelihood the import taxes meant to punish Canada are actually having a larger adverse impact on American automakers.

“The data is irrefutable,” Brian Kingston, CEO of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association, which represents America’s major automakers in Canada, told Automotive News Canada. “By virtually every metric—be it jobs, production, prices, tariff costs—every metric points to the same thing: U.S. trade policy is damaging the U.S. auto industry.”

Canadian potash company invests $500M in North Vancouver shipping terminal

More than 15 million tonnes of Canadian potash are delivered by Canpotex annually. It ships the critical mineral from producers, including Nutrien and Mosaic Canada, to more than 40 countries every year, according to its website.

Vancouver Fraser Port Authority President and CEO Peter Xotta described Canpotex’s investment as “significant” in the news release. The funds “will better connect Saskatchewan potash to key markets in South America, the Indo-Pacific and beyond,” he said.

“Port of Vancouver terminals, such as Neptune, are playing an outsized role moving more of what Canadians make to overseas markets in support of Canada’s goal to double exports to non-U.S. markets,” Xotta added.

Canada sends biggest trade mission to India in 30 years amid CEPA push

Canada will send nearly 300 business delegates to India next week in its biggest trade mission to the country in more than 30 years, as it looks to expand commercial ties and "more than double bilateral trade" by 2030.

The delegation, led by Canadian Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu, will visit Mumbai and Bengaluru from October 12 to 17, according to an official statement issued on Friday. The visit comes as India and Canada work to conclude negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the end of this year.

Sidhu said, "By matching Canadian expertise in sectors like aerospace, agri-food and clean technology with India's growing demand, we will diversify our trade and attract new investment." According to the statement, the mission is aimed at helping Canadian businesses connect with Indian decision-makers, industry leaders and potential customers, while building partnerships expected to generate employment in Canada.
