Ime may have ruined your late season momentum by the mass-resting of the past week. you looked completely out of whack today vs Denver at full strength..You don't do that with a young team.

These games don’t matter at this point. They were going to be off a week regardless. You aren’t going full out with the 2 seed locked up and risk injury.

todays' wish list
obviously, Magic over Hawks
Warriors beating Memphis is also preferable. the ideal draft scenario imo is us getting 13 from the hawks and the kings pick staying theirs at 12. yes, we could get hawks pick at 12, but imo its better to deny the hawks a means to improve when we also own their next 2 picks (via swap rights next year, and outright in 2027, a year where we do not have our own pick anymore).
for this to happen, one of the necessary conditions is the Mavs making the playoffs. so they've got to not only beat the kings tomorrow, but then on Friday beat the loser of the Warriors/Grizzlies game. Warriors have been quite good since the butler addition, and the grizzlies have been faltering and fired their coach. its more likely the Mavs can beat the Grizzlies than Warriors, so lets hope the dubs win

yep. if they lose today (and lose again on friday to the winner of bulls/heat) they fall to lotto.
assuming Kings dont make it (they have to win twice), then hawks/kings would have a coinflip to determine who gets the 14th slot or 13th slot. theres not much consequence there aside from moving up one spot
the ideal scenario involves not only the hawks getting bounced, but also the Mavs winning both play-in games and advancing. then the hawks/kings will again have a coinflip but instead of it being 13/14, it becomes a flip for 12/13. which either way is an improvement for the spurs from the other scenario. if we get 12th slot, thats nice. but its even better if we get 13th, since that all but guarantees the kings keep their pick instead of giving ATL a late lotto pick, which would bode well for us in the longer term

Wemby is a better shooter than any of Orlando’s top guys. I’d even say Fox is a better shooter than these guys. Orlando’s problem isn’t spacing right now. It’s that Paolo and Franz are underperforming right now.

if only ther offense could cause atlanta defenders from needing to be more distant from the ball

Spo and the Heat experience really boils down to the Heatles and Jimmy Butler. None of them are walking through that door. Chicago has been winning at a pretty good clip, post ASG, and I trust that more. They finished the season 17-8.

All this talk of having no spacing being a good thing is pretty silly to me. I do understand having a rebounding 4 or 5 to play in certain lineups where said player doesn't have to be an outside threat. For instance, as I watch this game, I see alot of what would fit that bill in a guy like WCJ. He's obviously not the only guy out there but getting a guy using 2nd's + a player seems like a better value and fit than drafting a guy at #8 who can't defend and has a questionable motor.

I have noticed that everyone seems fixated at fixing our problems mostly through the draft. Unless we jump into the top 4, no one in this draft will contribute in a meaningful way next season, so those problem areas need to be otherwise addressed.

No one said having no spacing is a good thing. People assume that’s a thing for the Spurs because they don’t give Fox or Castle enough credit as shooters. Add the fourth guy (a small forward) who will likely also be a shooter, and the Spurs don’t have a spacing issue. People are dealing with hyperboles in this thread as if the Spurs will have that type of deficiency if they attain what I want for the PF spot. They won’t.

Yes, when you make 3 pointers you typically win. For example, the Spurs were 11-3 this year when making 18+ 3s this season. One strategy in the modern NBA is to make it so that games where you make three is not a rare occurrence.
The Spurs only made 18+ threes 14 times this year.
Compare that to:
Boston: 45 times, 38-7
Cleveland: 25 times, 23-2
OKC: 20 times, 18-2
It's not necessary though... On the flip side, the Rockets only did it 7 times, when they went 5-2.
I think everyone generally agrees that the Spurs can get by with one non-shooter in the lineup. I agree that Fox is enough of a 3P threat (he's right on the borderline of SpursBills metric, which I think was 2.5 3PM/100 IIRC, but they can correct me if I am wrong). He's not a guy teams are going to leave open and dare to shoot, which is what we can't have. Where we disagree is that you just assume Castle will be a good enough shooter, but I want to see it first. I actually believe he will develop a respectable 3 point shot... but I want to see it first. 28.5% ain't gonna cut it, but I like his willingness to shoot.

What’s weird is that scott and others took my argument, which specifically applied to the Spurs’ roster makeup (I consistently point out that building around Wemby requires certain archetypes), and brought it into another thread, misrepresented it with strawman fallacies, and made it sound like I value rebounding over three-point shooting for teams in general, which is entirely false. My entire argument is centered on the Spurs and Wemby. This whole thing feels dishonest from the start.

I say Chicago, they’ve been playing relatively well of late so hoping the momentum carries them to the 8th seed.

It's weirder to me that you find it weird. It's an interesting conversation, and I pointed out how Orlando's performance early in the first half was an illustration of that kind of team building philosophy going right... and then it quickly fell apart in the 2nd half when their offense went completely stagnant, which can happen when it's built in a one-dimensional way. Then they had a couple of guys get hot from 3 and completely bail out their stars who didn't show up today.
I don't know where you're getting this You Against the World vibe from... do you just have a problem with people having conflicting view points? No one was attacking anyone, no one was twisting anything... just folks having a conversation. Why do you feel attacked? What are these alleged misrepresentations?

Warriors showing why Edey type centers are unplayable in these situations. Post walking into wide open threes, everyone attacking the rim at will. Centers in 2025 have to be able to guard in space or to be protected by everyone else.

You know you're one of my favorites around here... but I think you're waaaaaay overreacting here. Everyone always acts like smartasses here... if you're going to take it personally you're gonna have a bad time on ST.
You made a post specifically mentioning me by name (and @'ing me, which hey, I actually appreciate) saying it's weird that I start attacking you in a different thread than where the conversation started. But I @'d you not as an attack, but because ORL's play in the first half was a direct positive affirmation of that point I thought you were trying to make in the draft thread (but hey, maybe I'm wrong?). Then it all fell apart, which of course I'm also going to point out. You find this "weird", but I find it as being part of what I find to be a good conversation.
If you take it personally... I don't know what to say other than... don't?

It was always going to end that way. The couldn’t play him in the 4th Q in the regular season because he was hunted. That will be an all game thing in any post season games.
He’s exactly what I said he’d be, a change of pace guy like Boban.. Bobi had a PER of like 30, and could only play spot minutes. If you can’t defend in space, that”s all the minutes you’ll ever see.

It’s cool, man. If I’m being honest, I wanted the part in my post about rebounding to be clearly framed as specific to the Spurs, to bring clarity to my viewpoint instead of this back-and-forth. I definitely think I was being misrepresented since I had to debunk the point about having “no shooting is a good thing” being thought of as something I believed in. That was a gross misunderstanding that was probably the final nail in the coffin tbh.

There is always a cap to team's ceiling when you are led by third-tier star players like Ja and JJJ (The Derozan-Lowry Model). We'll see what they'll do in the summer, but my prediction is that they'll be fighting for play-in spots instead of Top 3-4 seed from here on out.

What I've been saying. It's a junk roster. Ja is second tier with his best days possibly behind him, JJJ is a super role player at best, and then the rest is just an assortment of parts. Not terrible, but certainly not great. Jenkins was getting blood out of a stone with these guys. I think they'll need to rebuild fairly soon.

True. I also think Ime is a huge factor for the Rockets, in that the Warriors always true to punk and rough up younger teams, and one thing you not going to do to an Ime team is that.
I can see the Warriors try it, it not work, and then get ran out the gym by a younger more athletic team.

If Amen is able to neutralize Curry over the course of this series, this Rockets/Warriors match up could be where Amen becomes a household name. And honestly, neutralizing would just mean slowing him down significantly in two games and winning in 6 or 7. Slowing down Curry is basically making him shoot the career 3pt percentage of Trae Young or James Harden.

Yeah, don't think Rockets can win the series if the games are a nip-and-tuck affairs that comes down to a possession or two. Let's face it, the ratings are deep in Adam Silver mind and he is just not gonna let the golden goose opportunity of Warriors-Lakers series slip by. Honestly, If that Doncic-to-Lakers has a 'collusion element' to it, the league had a sneaky facilitating role somewhere in. That ratings narrative was getting too loud and started to dominate the airwaves and social media. The solution? Set up the Lakers for the next decade :lol

Will be interesting to see Jimmy free throw merchant Butlers FT count this series against one of the best defensive teams in the league.
Post from Reddit.
https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/1k0n3lf/why_is_jimmy_butler_getting_a_generationally_high/?share_id=Tsovr2tp1_VfELdKojMkA&utm_content=1&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1
Why is Jimmy Butler getting a generationally high Free Throw Rate?
Since Butler joined Miami, he's averaged a .610 FTr over the last 6 years, which is more than double LeBron's rate over the last 6 years (.287), higher than Shaquille O'Neal's career FTr (.578), higher than Wilt's career FTr (.505), it's higher than Jordan's 6 years during each 3 peat (.335). He's got a higher FTr over the last 6 years than even Joel Embiid does for his career (.553).
How is Jimmy Butler getting a better whistle than some of the greatest of all time at scoring in the paint?
Edit: He also has a higher FTr than Harden and Wade's prime years. His FTr is also dramatically higher than his Chicago-Philly years. Has he become better at attacking from ages 30-35 than 23-29?
Edit 2: He's got a higher FTr than LeBron's years in Miami (.445) which is arguably the most dominant attacking of the rim by a player since 2000 Shaq.
Also, maybe this should be it's own post, but LeBron barely has a higher FTr over these six years than Steph Curry (.259) even though LeBron this year gets 64.5% of his points 0-2ft from the rim, significantly above league average, whereas Curry scores below league average 0-2ft from the rim.

Meanwhile, the Heat will keep its own 2025 first-round pick only if it loses in the play-in round and thus misses the playoffs. If the Heat makes the playoffs, Miami would send its 2025 first-round pick to Oklahoma City but would keep its 2026 first-round pick. The Heat also owes a future first-round pick to Charlotte as part of the Terry Rozier trade. If the Heat misses the playoffs this week, OKC would get Miami’s unprotected first-rounder in 2026 and Charlotte would get the Heat’s unprotected first-round pick in 2028.

I've been saying it's collusion since the day the trade was announced.
Nico Harrison...buddies with Rob Pelinka (GM for Lakers)...former Nike exec for Kobe Bryant.
Randomly decides to offer Luka Doncic "while having a cup of coffee" with Pelinka. Doesn't insist on Austin Reaves or more draft picks because of Luka's "conditioning".
Doesn't float any offers out to other teams "for fear word will get out"
The whole thing is shady, but I'm sure he is getting some money under the table to make it happen and is scrambling to play damage control.

Looking at the situation in the West, we could easily be the top4 seed right away if we hire the right coach and get a couple high end role players.
Jazz will still be tanking.
Pelicans just hired Joe Dumars as a GM. :lol
Kings just fired their GM and will probably blow it up.
Suns are done with no way to improve.
Mavs will certainly implode at some point, due to AD's health if anything.
Blazers are trending upwards, but don't have enough talent. I guess if they get lucky with a top4 pick.
Grizzlies have a lot of issues and tough decisions to make with contract extensions.
Timberwolves are in a similar situation.
Nuggets are in an even worse roster situation, but will be relevant as long as Jokic is there.
Warriors have one more year of pretending in them.
Clippers look great right now, but nephew is turning 34 and Harden will be 36.
Lakers are fundamentally flawed, but I'm sure they'll scam another idiot GM into getting some legit role players for nothing.
Obviously not all of these teams will trend downwards, but I'd say top6 seed should be an expectation next season.

NBACentral on X: "Adam Silver says ratings picked up in the 2nd half “I think you saw tremendous competition around the league…healthy stars, a trade that attracted a lot of attention. A bunch of things happened in the league and that generated a lot of interest.” https://t.co/o9N7tUl80W" / X (https://x.com/TheDunkCentral/status/1912910473395061048)

The great thing about conspiracy theories is that when they don’t pan out, nobody ever has to admit that they were wrong. Most of the fans out there who aren’t Spurs fans think it’s a “conspiracy” that the small market San Antonio team landed Wemby, which of course contradicts every other “big market = more money” conspiracy.

Interesting how the guy posting a split second after you understood me perfectly unlike you.
For a start, I didn't think anyone was crazy enough to want DeMar back, so going by that premise and the disjointed sentence, I was wondering what you're banging on about. I'm not calling you out on the sentence or anything like that as I stuff up my writing all the time, it's more the DeMar thing that made me malfunction reading that, as I can't fathom anyone wanting him back on the Spurs (he's absolutely terrible in the playoffs and can't shoot the three. Really does NOT fit on this team, or any team looking to win it all). He's just too soft. Great guy, but just not built for the playoffs mentality wise. He might have been a Kobe fan, but doesn't seem like he ever took that Mamba mentality from him.
That was probably one of the worst times in Spurs history and where it all started going downhill. Pop's coaching went to complete and utter shit after Kawhi burned him and the team, and I feel Pop started treating guys like DeMar and LMA very friendly from that point on when he should have been on their asses for their soft play. I think the DeMar era was where that friendship crew culture started coming in. Maybe I'm being too harsh on DeMar as he came in at a bad time, but I was never impressed with his playoff play on the Raptors or the one series with the Spurs.
Lebron had a chance to bring him to the Lakers once or twice and he passed on that. I don't even like Lebron, but at least he was smart enough to not want DeMar. He chose Westbrook over him. Probably should have went with DeMar instead of Westbrook for some better regular season play. They could have even possibly traded for him this season before the Kings trade, but it looks like it worked out much better for them since they fleeced the Mavericks for Luka.

I know they don’t have too many options but poor Davion Mitchell can’t dribble, shoot and finish at all, is too small to guard and he’s still getting too many minutes.
spurraider21
04-18-2025, 08:03 PM
davion mitchell offensively today has been a 6'0 jeremy sochan. passes up on shots. dribbles without a plan, fails to create an advantage, stops, and then tries to find a way to pass it back out. every time.
he has single handedly killed so many possessions, and now atlanta has roared back
