J Collins gone
I can't say that I'm sad.
A lot of people here will be.
We don't have cap space to sign him to anything more than MLE.
We can trade for him with Keldon/Barnes+Wesley/Branham.

Could be traded during the draft tonight tbh.

Is John Collins eligible for an extension at any point this summer or season? Would it have to start in the vicinity of $26.5M?

I think he picked up his option because noone would offer him similar money.
I think 60/3 extension would be a fair deal.
Keldon+Branham and some seconds, get it done Brian!
He picked up his option bc there will be more teams with money to overpay next year. They all want to be free agents next summer.

I firmly believe the only players the Spurs are willing to trade are Branham and Wesley. Everybody else is basically untouchable.
Keldon was one DeJounte Achilles tear away from being in NO. The original trade was Keldon to NO, DJ to Sacto, and Fox here, with pieces around them to fit.
I think Keldon and Devin would be sent out in the right package.

i dont think the spurs would trade Vassell for Collins. i think the spurs FO likes Devin more than we do here, or is at least hopeful he can find his way
with that said, any combination of Barnes/Keldon + Branham/Wesley works salary wise. its just a matter of figuring out how many SRPs gets it done

I don't understand trading Simons. The Celtics would have to take back nearly as much salary in any trade, wouldn't they? The real savings would be to hold him this season and let his salary roll off.

They want to avoid apron penalties for this season meaning they have to trade him before the deadline.
Apron penalty is about receiving salary back. Celtics can't receive more than 110% of the outgoing salary, but if they're trading with a team that's not affected by apron penalties, that team can take 125% of the ougoing salaries.
They could shed around 7 million by trading Simons.

I thought Simons was actually a good basketball move to replace some of Tatum's scoring but it looks like the Celts could just be writing off this coming season.

Interesting thought about them writing off the season. Do they have their own draft pick? Do you guys expect them to still make the playoffs if Jaylen Brown, D-White are healthy, or do you think even with those guys play well if it's going to be enough? I thought the exact same thing as you, that they would use Simons' scoring to replace some of what Tatum does there and make a push for the playoffs.

I see. That would limit their options to players making roughly $21M, either in aggregate or as a single player, but still leaves some doors open.

Yeah it doesn't make a ton of sense. Re-signing Horford seems to be a priority -- that's a win-now move but is it a smart wait-until-he's-almost-41-to-win move? And if your projected starting lineup is ? / White / Brown / Horford / Kornet, what would fill the ? better than Simons when scoring volume will be a necessity? On paper it looks like the current roster plus a competent backup PF could easily end up in the playoffs and then they could make a decision on whether Horford or Simons should be a priority to keep for Tatum's return the following season.
They could just trade away a bunch of guys and have the leftovers on the unbalanced team tank while Tatum is out, but that's tough to do effectively in the East.

Boston is still in the tax by 10 million and that’s without Horford or Kornet. They need to keep flipping contracts for less salary.

Today is the day our free agency dreams come true!
Kornet and LaRavia would be phenomenal. Add in a trade for John Collins or Aldama and it's a miracle offseason. Yabusele might be an interesting addition, too.
Expectation is we are going with what we have or adding an under-the-radar (unexciting) vet or picking up someone else's reclamation project.
Even with the logjam of guards, I could see us adding a vet backup PG. Point guard, not Paul George, btw.
