Really nice contract.

If Kornet is good, Spurs have locked their backup C for 4 years with a nice descending contract.

If Kornet sucks, he is almost an expiring contract as soon as next summer.

makes sense. he's a late-breakout guy who will be 30 when the season starts. a full guaranteed deal at his peak value over 4 years is not a risk any team would really take for a guy who profiles as a backup. and if he does pan out, the declining deal is going to be a nice attribute for him

#7 should be hanging in the rafters right now tbh. Along with a couple more Championship banners. But I digress.

Last worn by David Duke Jr., Josh Richardson, and Bryn Forbes.

Agreed. The JR Reid disrespect has gone on for too long among Spurs brass.

He’s basically 2/24 given the partial guarantee.

Just glad we have a funny, quirky White guy on the team again tbh. It's been a while.

Darn, I feel kind of bad for Luke now. The contract is a lot better than I thought (on the Spurs side, but not so much for Luke). Hopefully he's a solid/amazing role player for the Spurs and it all becomes guaranteed. That video was super cool. Didn't realize he watched the Spurs when he was a kid.
Edit : Looking at his age, he moved to Texas when he was 11, so around 2006 (more on the mid point of the Spurs' prime of the big 3 era). Not sure if he watched the Spurs' earlier championship teams wherever he lived before that.

Edit : Those that say number 7 should be retired, who for? When I think of number 7, I think of Fabricio. I don't know too many Spurs number 7s before Fab. I hope Kornet can also become a key Championship role player for the Spurs like Fab was. Fabricio was a great player great guy for the Spurs (I wish the Spurs got him when he was younger and had him longer). Happy Kornet can also wear that number. Also, looking at Fab's stats and minutes per game, maybe I overacted a bit initially when the signing was announced because he hasn't played many minutes or average much ppg wise. Fab's career reminded me that doesn't matter if you can play a role and play it well, you can still help the team.
Hopefully guys like Devin can learn this too if they're going to stick around for a while longer.

The reason for Luke Kornet’s decision to wear No. 7 with the #Spurs?

“I hope to be a third of the player Tim Duncan was.” #PorVida

:lol. If you think about it hard enough, you'll know who I'm referring to tbh. Though Jr Reid's post-game was underrated.

I assumed Oberto... but Gorgui Dieng is also a Spurs legend

Any small interview/video after the signing apart from that short clip?

There's no need to feel bad for Kornet, the front loaded deal gives him most of the money upfront and, with the raising cap, if he's a decent backup center chances are great he makes that money on this deal or elsewhere. Win-win deal IMO.

He also voluntarily agreed to this deal within hours of the window opening... it's not like Brian Wright kidnapped his family and forced him to accept this deal.

Newest #Spurs big man Luke Kornet cracks that he chose #7 because he wants to be a third of the player Tim Duncan was.

haha I chortled out loud

great contract. Even if it was fully guaranteed the money is exactly what he's worth on-court production wise anyway. Declining deal as expected, but the partial guarantee in year 3 and non-guaranteed year 4 make this a very good deal. Gives the Spurs a ton of flexibility when the Wemby and Castle extensions are due. Best case scenario is he's a great back up big and they keep him around for the entire 4 years.

These are the kind of pieces the Spurs should add. Role players on 4 year deals with frontloaded salaries and options to pivot when Wemby and Castle get extended.

Good to hear. No reason for it not to be descending since that saves Spurs luxury tax dolllars in the future while getting Kornet more money so win-win.

I see that I came too late with the "I guess Oberto isn't getting his number retired" joke. About 5 years too late.

I remember he stayed at my hotel when he was rehabbing his arm.
I guess he went to Duke hospital.
We kept him and his therapist for a few days.
They did stretching on the lawn outside out front door.
My front desk girl was a tiny 4'9" latina from El Salvador and she was in compete awe of his height.
"I didn't know God made men that big!"
I said Wait till you see Wemby.

He was cool. Didn't talk to us much. His arm was in a sling.
