Carter Bryant will not play in the Spurs' Summer League game today against GSW.

The team is opting to keep him out of back-to-backs this early in the summer.

Dylan Harper and Riley Minix remain out until Vegas.

Small rant, what’s frustrating is it would be one thing if the spurs were a playoff team but we’re not… this approach on playing the long game, allowing guys to rest when they need to play, it reminds me of castle saying they only had like 8 practices for the entire season, fck that were not a good team, this soft coaching needs to stop.

Pop resting of players has really ruined the brand of this league. Too many stars sit out games when fans of other teams go to see them. Now we are doing it with summer league?? I really hope this bull shit doesn’t catch on. What a joke!!!!

I agree. This is bull shit and a joke. It’s bad enough we pander to the princesses at the NBA level. Now summer league too? Jordan didn’t sit out 20 games a year for rest. If the season is too long and tough for these pussies and soft ass coaches then let’s cut the season down to 60 games.

I agree, which is dumb considering they are completely different levels of prospects. If CB looked good yesterday I would be fine with him sitting today, but he looked raw and in need of as many reps as possible in a low stakes setting like summer league to try stuff. If Harper looks meh then he shouldn’t be sat, either.

Serious question, why do the Spurs participate in the California Classic? It is clearly treated as an inferior summer league tourney to Vegas SL, the top prospects always sit it out. Seems more like an annoyance for the Spurs to attend given how they treat it.

Every year two things happen: posters are surprised that we trade second rounders, and they’re surprised that SL is absolutely garbage. Nothing is gained by playing here. It doesn’t help anyone’s development because most guys just want to show out to get a 2 way or a gleague contract. It’s like a runway show in Paris. They do their little turn on he catwalk, and they’re done.

I disagree with that, the spurs always used the SL to monitor rookie to 2nd year progress made, several instances of guys coming to the SL and proving that they have shown growth from the previous year, Not to mention guys they found such as Jonathan Simmons, Bryn Forbes, Drew Eubanks who became regulars in the spurs lineups.

Load management was great and made sense when the core of the team was playoff tested vets with injury histories to match (TD, TP, Manu) in their mid-30s. They were known quantities as players and could be counted on to be ready when it mattered, the rest was more beneficial than reps would've been.

Trying to bring that same mentality (load management, extra rest days) to a bunch of kids who just need reps and game time more than anything and haven't even scratched the surface of their potential doesn't make sense. If the results were better (ie if we had made the playoffs at all in the last 6 years) I would be more inclined to yield to the front office expertise, but our results have been mostly terrible. Our player development has stagnated hard.

These choices just feel like the Spurs think its still 2016 with a championship in the near rear view, not a team who hasn't done shit this entire decade. Being unable or unwilling to adapt is not the strength PatFO (MatFO?) thinks it is.

Doesn’t matter how long ago it was lol I’m saying the spurs do care about SL and use it as a tool to improve the team. Saying “Nothing is gained by playing here. It doesn’t help anyone’s development,” is naive… two summers ago we saw how Julian Champagnie came into the games and showed he was a bright prospect for the spurs to invest in.

you gotta understand that they have never been through this process before ever since Pop started coaching. The Spurs don't understand how to operate any other way. It's stupid, but that's literally what it is. I just hope with the old man out, Mitch at the helm and Sweeney being his lead assistant, things will change over time. This bullshit has been going on forever.

Yea it sucks he isn't playing, but his future is already known. These gamea are for the Spurs to find out who to keep around to try to develop in the g league. The minutes really don't matter for players on guaranteed contracts. Whether he plays good or bad won't change anything to come. It will impact all the guys trying to make a roster spot on the developmental side.

What unispiring second round picks we have had in recent years. Not a single player with at least a glimpse of a chance of making it to the league, as to at least watch these Summer League games with any resemblance of enthusiasm.

How many second round picks have they taken in the last four years? Two? Three, with one still in Europe?

Nah, anyone paying attention knew that shot had no chance of ever being fixed. I had no hopes whatsoever regarding Cissoko. That's precisely my problem with the Spurs 2nd round picks, they never had a chance from the get go. It's almost as if they selected prospects with no future on purpose just so that they didn't need to comit to them.

Wilt and Jerry West played back to back to backs, five games in six nights, and did it flying commercial in canvas shoes. The Spurs can't play a 19 year old kid more than 20 minutes in two games.

Yep. It's like I was saying when Harper's injury was announced. I get not playing guys if they're at an elevated risk of injury. But the Spurs not taking the summer-league seriously is a bad look. They can't act like only the playoff matter when they've missed the playoffs for six straight seasons. We as fans have had to learn to look forward to this time of year (which has always been my personal favorite) as a way to seeing a hopeful future. It's not too much to ask that we see the people we're supposed to be sticking around to watch develop instead of guys who won't even be playing in the country in a few weeks.

he was a longshot (hence being a mid second rounder), but there was at least a lot of athletic upside with him and some intirguing tools like a reasonable handle, passing, and defensive effort.

with ingram, he doesnt have good size for the position he projects at, he is a subpar athlete so he cant compensate for the size issue. and then while he has some baseline skill level, its nowhere near the level it would have to be to make up for the first two issues. and then the last gasp of sticking around for any player, good outside shooting, isnt there either
