CES 2006: Microsoft 360 Announcements
MS will release HD-DVD external drive by end of 2006.
by Gerry Block
January 4, 2006 - Microsoft opened CES with a Tuesday night keynote speech by Microsoft Chairman and founder Bill Gates and friends. Amidst the Windows Vista and Windows Media Center demos, Vice President Peter Moore got the chance to get on stage and make some rather interesting, if somewhat vague, 360 related announcements.
Most interesting was his revelation that Microsoft will release a HD-DVD external drive for the Xbox 360 by the end of 2006. Presumably the add-on is for DVD playback not necessarily games. No further details were provided, however, the words "Blu-Ray" were never mentioned by any of the Microsoft execs, and all demos done on stage with Media Center PCs were based upon HD-DVD. Microsoft, it would seem, has chosen its side of the looming next-gen-DVD battle, and not surprisingly has decided to get on the opposite side of Sony.
Moore also got the chance to release some pretty positive sales numbers for the Xbox 360. According to Moore, Microsoft is on track to sell between 4.5 and 5.5 million units by the end of June, and can boast a ratio of four games and three accessories purchased with each 360 unit. According to Microsoft, Xbox 360 is the fastest selling console ever, a statistic that, if true, doesn't explain the shortages in North America or Europe, the poor sales in Japan, or the returned systems. Microsoft barely scraped out 1 million units before year's end in a three-territory launch and could have sold millions more if the consoles were available. Also highlighted was the fact that while only 10% of Xboxes were ever connected to Xbox Live, 50% of Xbox 360 units are now running online.
Moore stressed the great benefits of Xbox Live as a channel to the key 18-34 year old demographic, and cited the exclusive release of the Mission Impossible 3 trailer on Xbox Live as evidence of the excitement the entertainment industry has for Xbox Live as a content and advertising distribution avenue.
Also announced was a promise of 20 games on Xbox Live Arcade by the end of March, including Capcom's classic arcade game Street Fighter 2, as well as 50 HD games for the 360 by the end of June. The keynote ended in a demo of EA's Fight Night Round 3, with Gates helming Ali and Steve Balmer piloting Fraiser. The game looked hot on the giant stage screen, and despite some billionaire-trash-talking, Gates managed to kick Balmer's ass. Before the 360 segment had concluded, Microsoft announced a playable demo of the game was available on Xbox Live Marketplace. Fight Night Round 3 is due to ship on Xbox 360, Xbox, and PS2 February 21.
Microsoft also made inroads with MTV ith its new Urge digital music service, which uses Windows Media Player 11 and accesses more than 2 million songs from major and independent labels in addition to MTV content. Expect this service to connect with Xbox 360 sometime in the future.

Don't know if this will be on my "to buy" list, but just thought I'd give everyone a heads up if they were planning on upgrading their DVD player to HD-DVD anyway.

In other news, Sony still didn't have a working PS3 to show off :lol
PS3 is set for late Spring of 2006 and there aren't really any tech shows or E3 type events to show it off. So why do it.................
360 can't be boasted there is no GOOD games for it.
So far all the games are only using 33% of the X-Boxs' resources. (graphic wise)
All the games out for the 360 are the same as a regular X-Box. And they're are no games..................ummm yeah even though it is early at least some games should be heard of so far none. I feel sorry for all the lads wasting there money on a box. Oh yeah....... and like over 57% of the 360s' have bugs and overheating problems.

I play for the games not to be Microsofts or Sonys bitch.
As for the 360 games, cmon, did you expect the first wave of games to all be incredibly awesome? Get over it, the 360 has yet to peak.
All things aside, if your cheap, (E20) go ahead and pick sides. If you're a true gamer, buy all the consoles and enjoy all the great games. Which is why I already have my PS3 reserved. :fro

why don't people just get both systems and STFU? :rolleyes
I'd rather "sell out" and buy both or even all three, then I get to enjoy Halo 3, MGS4 and whatever Mario/Zelda will be on the Nintendo Revolution.
Play games people, not consoles.
Addendum: Is the 360 even out in Australia yet?

Why do it? Because this was THE trade show to make their statement. Instead they came out and showed off a 2 year old projector and mumbled about still having the PS3 release in late spring.
For something that's only 4 months away from launch you'd think they'd at least have a box by now...
As for the games, sorry I'm not an anime freak, hence the 360 works for me - all the great first person shooters you could ask for, especially when Halo 3 rolls. All the sports games you could ever want.
I guess if I wanted to beat off to Final Fantasy 26 I'd be jazzed about the PS3, but seeings I don't it's not all that great.
The Grand Theft line is pretty played out IMO.

I like everyone parroting....PS2 over Xbox...they have graphics we have gameplay...it's funny when you compare the games on both systems...who prevails...90% xbox.
I have both systems and I play the xbox a lot more. I purchased a 360 and even the graphics and capabilities overwhelm the current generation. If you have a HD TV and sound system you'd be retarded to think it's just slightly upgraded from the xbox or ps2.

I think graphics wise Xbox > PS2, but then Sony Fanboys say they have more games because of backwards compatability with PS1. Now the 360 has evened the "games available" field, now what do the Sony Fanboys say, well, now, uh.........wait until the PS3....it'll have Bluray and controllers shaped like bananas......its funny. :lol
What will be the next "beta": HD-DVD or Bluray, hmmmm, who introduced beta to overtake VHS anyway and for that matter, who introduced MiniDisc to overtake CD's? --- SONY.
:lol
Danyo you preach on play the games only, but your posts show lots of X-Box nut riding. And Aggie PS isn't all about Final Fantasy there was only 1 Final Fantasy game on the PS2 and that wasn't why PS2 fucking owned X-BOX, the reason being was that X-BOX has crap games to play. Say what you want. Halo and Doom 3; OK that is a lot of variety...........my ass.
People here might dislike Sony fro some reason, but for me it's not about the companies. It's about the entertainment value and Sony's gaming >>>> Microsofts gaming. Chances are PS3 >>>> X-BOX 360.
With Playstation in general you get All the Sports titles, All the Action Titles, All the Adventure Titles, The best stealth title ever MGS. All the RPG titles, EVERYTHING.
With Box you get: Halo, Doom........oh yeah Splinter Cell.
And they're all availbe for the PC.
I'll admit it I don't like the X-BOX, why? Because when the X-BOX first came out I'm like ok I don't care, but too many people ramming it in your face like it was something holy and the ulitmate piece of gaming hardware ever. And all the box boys are hella cocky and just go around running around in circles yelling:
X- BOX HAS BETTER GRAPHICS IT IS BETTE NANANANANNAA.
And about the graphic thing, no company really fully utiliziled it's full CPU graphics proccessor at 100% maybe X-BOX video game graphic designers/programmers are lazy and dont' care about their work, but no game really beat PS2's games (graphic wise) by like a mile, except Doom 3 and Fable and I think Farscape or somehting.
Oh yeah and the best piece of gaming hardware ever is the PS1. :lol

Quit asking mommy to buy you one , get a job and buy it yourself.
If you have a job and don't live with yo momma, buy some furniture. Chicks are not impressed with a Xbox.
Milk crates do not = an end table. A couch with bricks as one leg is not art. Washing your clothes in the sink is not old school.
I direct this at guys cause females could care less about a $300 game console.
When guys gets a hard on about a game and not a chick, they have a problem.

Xbox nut riding? Hardly, I replaced my PS1 with an Xbox, then with PS2, and now with a 360. I could care less who made the consoles, I play the games that intrigue me. It seems your the fanboy around here. As I've already said, I have my PS3 on reserve, hopefully they change the controller though. Next time you step into a Gamestop, step away from the PS2 wall and feel free to check out the other consoles. Why would I limit myself to one system, when I can enjoy all the hits from all the consoles. If you can't afford it, that's another thing, but if you call yourself a "gamer" and stick to one manufacturer thats just sad. You have tunnel vision when it comes to games. 360 and PS2 have alot of different games to offer, I bet if you switched the library of both consoles, you'd still say PS2>360, just because of your hate of Microsoft. What companies OS are you using again? :lol
Chances are PS3>360?!?!??! I hope the PS3 will be better than the 360, why the hell wouldn't I? More competition means better innovation. If the PS3 sucked, why would Microsoft make another future Xbox? You think Sony made the PS3 just because and not because they felt the heat to upgrade because of the 360? :rolleyes

Or should I take up a less expensive hobby like my co-workers and become an alcoholic? :rolleyes Yeah, most chicks wouldn't be impressed with an Xbox, but they are usually impressed that I'm able to afford a $400 gaming system along with new $60 games every other week and it not causing my bank account to be overdrawn. And since my chick loves playing games when we're done "playing games" :eyebrows, I'm in heaven. So I guess I'm the exception to generalization of people with a problem in this thread, huh? :lol

You can bet on it because of Moore's law. Till we reach 1 atom sized transistors and gaps the law continues. I think the next consoles will be made with at least 40-50nm processors and memory.

It's not that they are Opposite Sony... that's absurd...
Sony has ALWAYS fought open standards..
They wanted Beta instead of VHS..
SDcard instead of Compact Flash
Even DVD was fought by Sony... not Microsoft.
The HD is a much more open standard than Sony.
Don't forget Sony put trojan virus on music... OK that's BS.
I don't care about Sony much but at least I have a working memory.
- Beta was developed in paralel with VHS and something called Video2000. None of them were standards but independent development by 3 different manufacturers (Betamax-SONY, VHS-JVC, Video2000-can't remember who, I think they were German). VHS became a de facto standard because of its sales and not because it was better (actually all experts agree Beta was the better format). And just so that you know VHS is not an open standard, every VHS manufacturer must either buy the mechanism from a JVC approved manufacturer or pay them a fee (it might expire because of patent laws but its how it worked/works).
- Sony does not use SD card but their own memory sticks. Same situation as with Beta when the memory stick came out it was the cheapest and most powerful non volatile memory device. Compact flash was the only one that could compete with storage space vs. price but was way too big for the small compact digital still cameras that were being developed by SONY (Sony was the first to market digital still cameras for the masses - the first models actually recording pics on floppy disks). Other manufacturers decide to develop their own memory devices - and therefore acted exactly like SONY.
- DVD was never fought by SONY. DVD was developed by a consortium of manufacturers/institutes PHILIPS being probably the strongest contributor to DVD (just as to CD) SONY was an integral part of the consortium and among the first manufacturers of hardware for the DVD standard.
- HD DVD is NOT open but regulated by a bunch of patents so you want to use it: pay them (I personally don't care who the money is going to SONY or some other big corporation - I just know I'm paying). You only get the technology if you pay - just like SONY.
Oh and btw Sony's proposed blue laser disk technology is more future proof than HD DVD, which means that if HD DVD wins we'll have to pay twice (for HD DVD and for the next generation that will come along in a few years and won't be compatible with HD DVD / and I'm not sayinfg that it will be different if SONY wins) so whenever you're in doubt just follow the money. They are all gready bastards with MS leading the pack (They invented the practise of selling unfinshed products and not taking resposability for it - so for me that makes them the leader).

Sony Fanboys say they have more games because of backwards compatability with PS1.
This cracks me up too. Really, who cares how many games they have? I think most people have a sweet spot of about 10-20 games that are what they play. And the most popular games are the shooters and the sports games. THe Halo franchise kicks anything Sony has as far as shooters go, and you can get all the 2K series and EA series sports games for both consoles.
Where I think MS wins is because they have made the 360 a media extender. A lot of people are under-rating that feature, but it's where home entertainment/computing is going - a convergence of the computer and home audio/video. It's why I think MS will win this battle.
so whenever you're in doubt just follow the money.
Great quote, and the other reason I think HD-DVD will win - it costs marginally more to produce a HD-DVD disc as manufacturers can use the same machining they used to create ordinary DVDs. Sony's new discs are rumored to run $40-50 a pop.
The big argument from the Sony camp seems to be that they have 50GB dual layer discs.
1) How often are you going to need to rip 50 GB of data?
2) Do you realize how slow that burn is going to be?
And didn't sony already confirmed how the PS3 will look like? They've already showed numerous game footage on lots of titles.
We know how the box will look. I am talking about actual, real, physical game play.
Right now all they've shown is some cut scenes that are rendered outside of normal game play parameters.
It's very telling that Sony ducked any news about the PS3 to me. I think anyone expecting this console out before next Christmas is kidding themselves.

But the main reason I will be sticking with the PS3 is because I hate the design of the XBox controller. That is pretty shallow. I know. But I hate learning to use a different type of controller like when the Super Nintendo came out. That is why I didn't buy one.

Tekken > DOA
GT4 > Forza
shooters on PC are the best
Morrowind and KOTOR aren't an Xbox exclusives there on PC as well.
Between a PS2 and a PC I currently have all the PS2 exlusives and all the worthwhile Xbox games on PC (Halo, KOTOR, Fable)
And slayermin your not the only one who doesn't like that controller, actually its usable I just dont think its as nice as the PS2 one.
Anyway to each there own, Xbox seems to have PS2s measure when it comes to shooters, which are best on PC, but otherwise the PS2 has it pegged IMO.

BTW, stop bragging that you can buy all 3 consoles. Richie Rich.

It would of sucked to be a Nintendo fanboy back then, when Madden was blowing up on Sega, and vice versa with Super Tecmo Bowl. I lost alot of summer days on that game! :spin

KOTOR is a single player RPG. I don't like single player RPGs' and no I didn't miss the game of the millenium because I didn't play Knights of the Old Republic. I do like long games because I don't wanna finish a game in 6-8 hours, KOTOR isn't built like an old school RPG. The only RPGs' I play are old school ones that take 60+ hours to complete. (i.e FFVII(best RPG of all time), Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, Parasite Eve(short, but good), FFVI, etc)
I don't even know my I bought a GC, fucking wanted to play RE4 an BAM it comes out on the PS2.

Broaden your horizons, that's all I have to say. Don't limit yourself, just because "everyone" is pushing the Xbox as the best ever, doesn't mean you have to miss out based on their overhyping of a system. Talk about negative peer pressure! Like the PS2 wasn't shoved down peoples throats! :lmao

You guys have been saying this entire thread Sony doesnt have a box to show off yet and so you wont pay them a moments notice when they release info about it. Disregarding it because they have yet to show it anywhere....
So why the fuck isnt the same true for the controller, I agree looks ugly as fuck but its still a prototype that they haven't even shown along with a box. I'd hardly take that as an example of what the end product will look like. Chances are its backwards compatable anyway. I'll just use my DSII.
Secondly, congrats to Xbox they got the first next-gen console out. Do you remember who released the first one last time?
Sega with the Dreamcast. That did real well didn't it.
I don't get it you guys bash E20 cause he has a PS2 and likes it, BFD. You guys are like Jacko with a small boy when it comes to your Xbox. All over its balls.

The controller didn't make an appearance at the show, so hopefully they've gone back to the drawing board with that, if not hopefully there will be adapters to use the PS2 controllers with the PS3.
Comparing the 360 to the Dreamcast, now I know you're hopeless. :lmao I'm not bashing E20 cause he has a PS2 and he likes it, I have a PS2 and I like it. I bash him because he said he doesn't like Xbox, because everyone always pushes it in his face and flaunts it as the best console ever. Even I know thats not true. Every console has its pros and cons. To not like something because everyone says its the best is just moronic. Hell I should stop liking the Spurs because everyone thinks they're the best. :rolleyes
As for PCs, I never said they were too expensive, just playing a $400 console on a HDTV is much better than playing a $4000 PC on a small(in comparison) monitor. Using a keyboard and mouse would remind me to much of work. :pctoss I'd rather have my laptop loaded with my music software(Acid/Reason/Rebirth) than PC games. Having to install new video cards, updates, patches would be too much of a hassle for me just to play a game. I guess I'll just refer to myself as a "console gamer" from this point forward.
FYI: If E20 would have just said "I've played Xbox before, but I just didn't like it" then that would have came across better. I like the motto, "don't knock it, till you try it."

I think people who play the "I can play it on PC" card are idiots. You spend $400 for a vid card that can handle games like Doom3, $200 for a Creative Labs Xifi, and you've gotta do it every 3-4 years to keep up with things.
Fuck, to play Doom3 at max resolution you need a vid card that costs more than the 360, and here's the kicker, come in at less than the price of the PS3, from what's been rumored so far.

Dreamcast was a victim of publishers like EA who were deep up sony's ass. Other publishers followed the lead of the largest publisher(pussies). Sega managed to put out a great lineup of games but it did not have the bank to sustain the dreamcast. It took online cosole gaming to a whole new level. It took sony a couple of years to even attempt their hand at it. Unfortunately consoles live and die by the general gaming public and great systems and games are often overlooked ...much like bandwagoning. It comes down to hype.
If EA were so sure of Madden being a great engine they would invest the money they paid for exclusivity to make the next great madden. However those madden lovers have only visual updates to look forward to in the coming few years. Much like when Madden on the original playstation had the next gen public to itself. Madden 94-99 were the dregs of football. But when Sega and Visual Concepts came in with NFL2k it sent ea a message that attractive crap is still crap.
I'm all over the place here. Dreamcast was so very underappreciated.

I was online from Day One(that it was offered). That made most games doubly fun. I spent hundreds of hours playing Phantasy Star Online. The 2k series on their own made the DC a must have. Add to that quake 3 and unreal tournament for the fps fans. RPG's were covered with Grandia 2 and Skies of Arcadia, cutting edge/niche games such as Samba di Amigo and Seaman, racing games such as metropolis street racer(precursor to Project Gotham). It covered the gamut of all genres.

Unfortunately I don't see RPG's as being that big a horse in console's gaming stables. But I don't disagree that it would have brought in a huge segment of gamers. I think because of Sega's competition in the software arena, many publishers would cut off their nose to spite their face in not publishing for the DC. It was clearly a console which for a year was well ahead of it's competition, it was easy to program for and had at the time a record breaking launch. There was a fanbase and money to be made off the DC but those publishers which chose not to release games for it did it no favor.

Xbox 360 to go Blu-Ray?!?! (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3146900)
Xbox community site Xbox Circle reports that in a recent interview with Japanese website ITmedia, Peter Moore admits that the Xbox 360 could see an add-on Blu-Ray drive for movie playback, should the Blu-Ray standard win the DVD format wars. Although HD-DVD is Microsoft's preferred DVD format, Moore says the fact that Xbox 360 would use an external next-gen DVD drive allows them to adapt to whichever standard wins out in the end. And by the same logic, Moore says that the PlayStation 3's built-in Blu-Ray drive could limit Sony's possibilities when and/or if HD-DVD becomes the predominant standard. Finally, Moore says Microsoft is firm on the decision that (possible) future iterations Xbox 360 will not ship with a built-in HD-DVD drive.

PS3 to be $500+?!?! (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3146944)
$500 for the PlayStation 3? Developers and analysts are thinking just that. In an recent article, CNN Money's Chris Morris talked to several different people about the possibility of a $500 price point for Sony's next-gen console, and there was plenty to be said.
P.J. McNealy from American Technology Research stated that the $499 would be "more likely" than a $399 price point, however, Sony calls such claims "speculation." The reasoning for this comes from the existence of the Blu-Ray drive in the PS3, and as Morris points out, "Pioneer last week at the Consumer Electronics Show unveiled a standalone Blu-Ray player for $1,800."
While there's a profit margin built into the price of the Pioneer player, there's plenty of other technology required for a PS3 that's helping raise the price. Hard drives, Cell processors, and nVidia graphics chips aren't exactly the cheapest ways to construct a system.
Analysts don't stand alone in their belief of the $500 price point, either. Unnamed developers in the article expect Sony's new console to cost gamers 50,000 pretty pennies. Though there was no clear consensus on the price between the developers Morris spoke to, they were expecting it to cost anywhere from $399 to $700.
While Sony has yet to correct anyone, the actual price is still a mystery. We should know everything no later than May at E3, though, and the Japanese price will more than likely be revealed before then. Until that time, though, your guess is as good as our guesswork.
The biggest culprit is not EA, more like SQUAREENIX, without their final fantasy series catered for the PS machine, sony will be phase out like the dreamcast. The only reason sony has done well today is because of sqaureenix.
