I go this morning to Best Buy to get a GPS system for my truck.

I use this truck in the summer and spring in california, Houston, and Phoenix.

Ive been sick of using directory assistance to find places, and still not know where they are, so I stepped up to the plate.

So I get there, and the best buy guy comes right over to me and says can I help you?

I explain what I need and he explains the pros and cons of each one, the differences, and in his humble opinion, wich one to get. Sorry haters, he suggested one of the cheaper ones.

So I went with the Tom Tom 700.

So he looks in the case and sees none are there, he shakes his head and says, "damn, I KNOW there was one there this morning for inventory, let me check in the back and and see whats goin on."

So he is away for 4 to 5 minutes, while i mess around with the display models, and he comes back and says "Sir, I sincerely apologize, but apparently someone bought up the last one about 5 minutes before you"

Chuckiling, because this literally ALWAYS happens he says "Hold on, let me call around and see if they have any"

Calls around, none, bupkis, apparently its their best selling GPS module (I guess all those annoying commercials work)

So he says, "Well, we have one that is a different brand, but VERY similar t the TOMTOM model, its this Garmin here, its the newest model we just got in, its VERY highly rated, and considered a best buy by consumer reports"

So I look, and the damn thing is a G note, thousand bucks.

The TomTom was 800.

So I say, "Well thats too much, I guess Ill settle for the TomTom300"

So he says "Let me talk to my boss, let me see if I can get that lowered to the Tom Tom 700 price"

So he leaves for about 5 minutes comes back and says "Got it done, if you wanna buy this, its 800, plus, for your troubles sir, hes gonna include 1 year of warranty work on the module"

Im totally blown away. I bought the unit, it works great so far, and I cant wait to use it in Houston on tuesday looking for a BWW.

So after he gets all the paperwork done, he takes it up to the front, works with the register girl on how to ring it up, and tells me "Once again sir, I apologize we didn't have the unit you wanted, I know how that feels and it blows quite frankly. Hope we havent lost your business!!!"

Big props to the THE FORUM Best Buy.

Great workers out there, great help, great service.

Everyone was really cool about everything.

AND THATS, why I shop at Best Buy for everything electronics.

EXCEPT for a 60 inche Sony plasma flat screen.

We always buy computer stuff from Best Buy, but we always have to wait around a long time to get any customer service if we have to ask any questions. They all just stand around doing nothing and act like you are bothering them if you have any questions about any items.

But we still shop there.

Question: Why would you buy TV's from Bjorns? That's the most overpriced place I've ever seen.

A good salesperson should also pay attention to the (potential) customer's level of eye contact and facial expressions. Usually if someone wants help they'll be looking around for someone...or if they they look somewhat confused or uncertain, it's probably a good idea to ask if they need assistance.

Otherwise, STFU. I hate that shit. :) :lol

What I hate is when I NEED help with something, ASK for help with something (THREE FREAKING TIMES), and get told (very snottily, I might add) "Good luck!"

I don't want to say the name of the store this happened in, but it rhymes with Home Depot in Bendcrest.

I went to Best BUy today to get my stereo installed.

They open @ 10am. Told me to be there about that time because it is 1st come 1st serve.

I got there at 9:50.

I wait my turn.

Dude named Ray coems over to me asks what I need (he is very polite and calls me "ma'am".. although I wish he wouldn't). I say I need my stereo installed- here;s my recipt.

He says there are 8 or 9 people ahead of me and they wouldn't get to do mine untill after 3pm.

At this point (after waiting adn talking and filling out form and what not) it is 11am. I say "fine" can I leave and come back?

He says thats fine but if I could come back around 2:30 so that my place inline doesn't get skipped.

I go to the park.

I go to lunch. At this point 2 yr old is in need of a nap. Going home, napping and coming back would go past 2:30 so we stay out & about.

I go to Marshalls. (psssst. 75% off clearance ladies!! panties, shirts, shoes!!)

It;s 2:15 - load kids in car and go back to best buy. 2yr old is now so over tired she is doing the constant whine that never ever stops. If you ask her what is wrong or tell her it is OK she breaks into an all out scream.

2:25 get to Best Buy - unload kids.

Guy at Best Buy says "we are very far behind today and the line hasn;t moved up near your car yet" Well.... how many are infron of me now?

Apparently there are still 8 or 9 cars to go before my turn. HUH??? Even tho the vehicles i nthe stalls at 2:30 are no the ones that were there that mornign and those ones are gone.

It seems that mine was the only stereo install... everyone else was getting speakers, amps, tv's dvds etc.

Frigging crap. He said if I stayed they might be able to fit me in around 7pm.

Dear lord.

I am going to try agian tomarrow.

I will be at Best buy at 6am with the girls in PJ's if friggin need be.

Retail is a thankless job. You can't please them all, and if you try, you end up pleasing nobody. I hope I never have to work retail again.

It's actually pretty easy. Leave people the fuck alone unless they're looking around for somebody. Offer to help those people. Smile when you do. Don't take it personally when they say no. Look them in the eye and thank them for their purchase when you ring them up.

This isn't rocket science, it's just treating people with respect - even when they don't return it - because it is your fucking job.

I worked retail for a couple years and always had one of the highest sales rates in the store. And all I did was treat people with respect.

Today I was at Circuit City and I needed the guy to put batteries in one of the digital cameras so I could check it out, he was right there and was able to help me, if he hadn't been I wouldn't have been able to check it out, so being available if necessary is very helpful.

Also as SpursWoman mentioned, it should be obvious who needs help and who doesn't, and people often ask but I don't think it's bad for them to ask, sometimes you have one of those questions you wouldn't bother to go out of your way to ask but since they asked you first, you go ahead.

BTW, the customer service at Circuit City by North Star was pretty poor, especially the cashiers we dealt with today.

I always made eye contact when customers came into the department, you could usually tell from their body language if they wanted to talk or were just checking.

If they looked indifferent I'd introduce myself and just tell them if they needed anything feel free to ask.

If you badger people you just piss them off. I wasn't the one of the golden sales boys to my area manager though, probably because I never tried to sell 100 packs of blank dvds to the grandmas and grandpas just looking for something simple to check email and download digital photos with. Oh well.

I'm kind of irritated by this, I figure since they are closing she might as well stay on and get everyone out of there, either way one cahsier for seven people isn't enough.

As a former cashier I know that if you don't close when you need to, no matter how long the line is, you won't leave for long after you are supposed to. I used to say fuck that line, I'm going home. Can't blame the person for wanting to burn off. If she stayed to help finish off the line, she would've been there for hours because those lines never end.

Best Buy is a wasteland if you plan on spending more than a C note. You get much better service and information from boutique electronic stores.

I was buying shit speaker wire to test my HT system when the BB salesman pitched me on the Monster Z1 speaker wire, which was only 10x the cost of the speaker wire I intended to buy. Once he told me that the "break-in" period* for the Monsters was a few weeks, I had to walk away without laughing in his face...

*There is no such thing as a break-in period for wire/interconnects...

I've returned shit there that I didn't even buy there! :lol

And THIS ladies and gentlemen is why customer service no longer is what it was. People take advantage and try to get over. Don't lie. Everyone does it. So everyone pays the price. Maybe not YOU at BEST BUY. But you doing it somewhere else = someone else doing it at Best Buy. Hence, we all are guilty, so we all must pay.....

Any other questions?

Too bad I had assumed I bought it at Walmart, but was mistaken. I even told them I wasn't sure I had bought it there, but since it was an item they kept in stock and they told me they'd return it to the manufacturer anyway, they obliged.

SUE ME.

BTW, if WalMart (or any other retailer) accepts something back that wasn't bought there, it won't hurt them.

#1) They only take back items they carry, so they'll turn around and either resell it or send it back to the supplier they got it from if its defective.

#2) Nobody gives you money without a reciept, so they're going to get their money right back.

Yep. And second hand smoke kills. And toxic fumes erode the ozone. What I'm getting at is that poor customer service is nothing more than a culmination of it's customers. We are all contributing to it one way or the other. Either by being guilty of trying to scam, by being an asshole customer, or by accepting the level of service given to you.

Think back to the days prior to "convenience" charges. It used to be that convenience was an added benefit, a selling point if you will, now you pay for it. And most people are more than willing to pay for convinience. Whether it paying $4 for two asprin from the corner store, or paying upwards of $5 to the ATM for getting your own money. Consumers dictate what the merchants do, plain and simple. Majority rules. If most people accept below average customer service, then that becomes the standard. Don't want to be hooked? Don't take the bait. Buy your electronics from Mr. Notebook and Wolf camera.

IMHO, customer service sucks because people want rock-bottom prices, but don't want to accept the consequences of it. If you want Wal-Mart prices, then don't expect help, because in order to sell things that dirt cheap, you have to cut back somewhere. And it sure as hell isn't gonna be the corporate suits who cut back- its gonna be in the service department 9 times out of 10.

You can't have it both ways. You can't have the cheapest possible price AND great service. Economics don't work that way. If you want the best (or at least decent) service, you have to be ready to pay a little more for your item. Cus if they don't get that extra money, they cut from hiring wages and training, meaning Joe Schmoe who just got hired is underpaid, undertrained and doesn't give a shit about you. I won't even get into the attitude problem that most youth seem to have today, which compounds the problem. That is another thing altogether.

In other words, if you demand a policy of rock-bottom prices, be prepared for a reduction in quality and/or service. You get what you pay for. And if you feel like you don't, then simply stop shopping there.

This is such bullshit I don't even know where to begin.

At Best Buy it's all about the accessories and warranties (heretofore known as the basket - BB's internal lingo).

They stress to you to basically screw over the people who are just looking for one thing or aren't going with a big basket in addition to their purchase. Basically, if you want to spend a lot of money, you are the perfect customer. If you aren't, then the sales person is supposed to move on.

Probably why I hated that place, I gave the same customer to the technophile coming in wanting to drop 3 grand on a new Sony system tricked out as mom and pop coming in looking for some printer ink and paper.

The problem is the managers all get compensated by their numbers as far as the basket goes. Seeings the sales people are all hourly with no commission, there's no incentive financially to bust your ass to land the baskets.

So what do the managers do? They tie your hours per week to your basket. If you're selling lots of shit, you get 40 hours a week. If you're taking care of the customers but not pushing a lot of bullshit onto unsuspecting customers, then you get screwed on the schedule. I saw full timers getting 30 hours a week because they weren't selling enough warranties and accessories, and then the manager would even cut their shift and send them home early.

Of course, all that contributes to shitty morale and then the customer suffers for it. If someone wants to call me jaded, fine. My area manager was a stupid bitch and ran her group this way. Our morale was rock bottom because of it, and I hear a month or two after I left to move to Dallas she got demoted to customer service lead.

They brought in a new manager who didn't run his group that way, and the service has gotten much better (it's the store that SW mentioned - the Forum).

So it's not really about sacrificing service for prices in my eyes, it's about poor managers who don't know how to do their job right.

AHF, I am talking general retail. You are talking Best Buy. I understand how it is different at Best Buy, but that is not always the reason you get bad service. Most places, you get bad service because of lack of employees and/or lack of knowledgeable employees. I never used BB as an example. But I have worked other retail as a manager and can see the consequences.

No profit.. = no grease.. no grease = people that don't want to be there..

This is a perfect summary of what I was trying to say. If a retail company lowers prices, they have to cut elsewhere, and service is usually the victim of these cuts.

You see this is still bullshit and if people think that way, they'll still do it. You don't have to pay employees a lot of money, you just have to hire the right employees. Money has nothing to do with it, you just have to have a good manager. If they hire Managers who are assholes, the employees will be assholes. Customer service, demeanor, morale, etc...reflect LEADERSHIP!

Bjorns is better at that stuff :oops
