View Full Version : Thoughts from a Spurs fan living in Dallas

(yes i'm stuck in dallas)
Guys, I watched this game at a local sports Bar.
I live in upper upper north west dallas, but I have experienced many bar situations throughout Dallas in my time here, so this analysis has more than one sample to go by.
The fucking fans here in Dallas are SHIVERING in their boots!!!!! I am not even exaggerating....its just like in November when Aggie fans were all "Reggie Bush, Reggie Bush!! yeah USC!!!! yeah!!!"
Guys, over half of the entire bar I watched the game at were cheering HARDCORE (yes hardcore) for the Kings. I turned to my right, said, "Uhhhhh, why are you cheering for a California team" and all I heard was "Finley is gonna suck, yeaaaaah go Kings!!!"
I turned to my left and said "I am a Spurs fan, yet I do not ever cheer for a team going against the mavs" and then I hear, "umm, but the Spurs will beat the Mavs"
Seriously, every one I asked at this bar was convinced the Spurs will OWN the mavs if they meet in the playoffs. Every fucking one. I'm sorry if this is a premature thread (Dallas is one of two teams i fear in this league, i am not prejudging) but i thought this would be sub-moderately interesting to post. Mavs fans truely are plano pussies.

Shit bring on the Spurs why would a fan be scared???
It's not like we're wearing that Jersey, the only reason I'd rather play the Kings is the Homecourt, otherwise bring on whomever.

heer for the team going against the mavs only if record and hc are involved for the spurs, otherwise, in the playoffs, why would you not want to play the best team? cbf, you need to find the 207 of bars in dallas and watch the game there

It's amazing how most people on these threads (Mav thread included) are incapable of making a serious point in regards to the upcoming Spurs/Mavs series.
First of all, you decide that the few people you were around in the a couple of bars you've been to represent the majority of the Mav fans??? Even if it does (and I highly doubt it does) what does it matter in regards to the series? If people with any basketball intelligence would actually tell what they truely feel in regards to this series (assuming the Spurs make it...which I think they will) they'd tell you that they were cautiously optimistic (both sides). Bottom line (whether you hate or love the Mavs), it's obvious that they are much more of a threat this season than in the past. I understand the fun of trash talk but it would be nice if we could have an intelligent conversation about the matchup instead of dissing cities, etc.

There's no problem with it but the Mav fans were surely pulling for the Kings cuz the Mavs would get home court in that series and they would rather not play the Spurs if possible. Duh, the Spurs are the world champs.
Myself, I want the Spurs to win but that doesn't mean I'm not worried about playing them. I just want to play the best and I think the Mavs have an excellent chance to take out San Antonio this year. I'm not really sure why it matters to the guy that started this thread if Mav fans want to avoid the Spurs or not? If I were a Spurs fan, I'd not care at all what other fans thought. You're the defending champs and have won 3 titles in last 7-8 years, why would you be worrying about what Mav fans are thinking :lol

Wouldn't that be the Bay Area? Anyway...
I witnessed the same thing at a sports bar in Arlington regarding people cheering for the Kings last night. Even more funny is that the Kings were the Mavs playoff nemesis as recently a couple of years ago. They had banners up in their practice facility in the offseason talking about all the layups they allowed Sacramento in their playoff series. Remember the cowbells? Bring that up and watch the excuses fly next time.
The only thing I can think of is the Spurs are to Mavs fans what the Lakers are to Spurs fans. Or better yet, the Mavs fans are like the Texas Tech football fans of the Western Conference. The rivalry has a lot more fuel up north rather than down south.
I love this town, but plenty of people here really don't know shit about their basketball team.

This is true about most towns. Geez, have you read some of the stuff that is written about hoops on this board alone? :lol There are a lot of people on this Spurs forum that aren't that bright when it comes to hoops. They're just fans and that's ok. To be fair, it's the same way over on the Mav forum. There are more fans than people that really know hoops. I'm sure it's that way everywhere. More fans just talking trash w/o much hoop knowledge.

You're entitled to your opinion. I've lived in Dallas for 6+ years (including now), San Antonio for 20, Austin for 15. Dallas ranks a VERY distant third of those three on my list of places to live. There may be "more to do" here but it's basically one of those "nice to visit, sucks to live there" issues.

Most fans everywhere are of the fair weathered variety. Cubs & Red Sox are examples of great fans, but the Spur's fans certainly don't fit into that category. Spurs fans might be slightly less fair weathered (hard to tell since Spurs have been good for long time now) than Mav fans but that's understandable since the Spurs are all they have in San Antonio.

That sounds about right. Mav attendance back in the 90's when they sucked was probably around 9-10k but there are many more people living in metroplex.

I'm younger than you, but I grew up in SA, went to college in Austin (and Denver), got transferred to Houston, and then transferred again to DFW. I don't really have an axe to grind for all of you easily offended homers out there, but I'd go Dallas-Austin-SA-Houston as far as rankings go (I'd rather live in Denver than Austin, but not Dallas). And I think the exact same "nice to visit, sucks to live in" thing about San Antonio.
I find it mildly amusing how defensive people get over where they live. Anyone who says that they'd never live anywhere but SA, or Dallas, or wherever hasn't seen enough of this continent to hold such a strong opinion.

I was there too. I've noticed a big majority are rooting for sacramento these days. but listening to the Ticket today, i think they know if they have to play the spurs, they wouldn't fear them as much as in past years. Its funny how they still want the easiest root.
What Mavs fans don't know is, to get what you want, its never easy. I certainly hope we can get past the kings. I want to play this mavericks team so badly, I can't even stand it.

I like my cities urban, big ( has to be a primary city over 5 million), easily accessible, and compact. Only two cities in Texas fit that description and that's Dallas and Houston but even these two are suburban in nature like the rest of Texas. But at least these two cities are getting more urban than SA and Austin.
San Antonio and Austin, while great to visit, are too small and spread out and there mass transportation is non existant. My favorite city in the state is Houston, though. I love Texas, raised here my entire life. But I prefer cities like Chicago and New York over every city south of Washington ,DC.

in a way it makes it more fun, because of all of your attention goes to one team. Like in Dallas nobody pays attention to the Mavs until the Cowboys are done and then nobody pays attention the Rangers until Mavs are and then when Cowboys are back they're all that matters. Just like the Astros are all that matter in Houston, the Texans will when they win, but that might not be soon. If the Marlins move to SA, they will always have a giant backseat to the Spurs, unless they win some more world series they might move into the passenger seat.

I love this town, but plenty of people here really don't know shit about their basketball team.I don't know what some of u guys r talking about. I was born and raised in Dallas for 21 yrs. I have recently lived in SA for about 5 yrs. now. In spite of the fact that SA has a really great team, I will always be a Mavs fan. Have been for about 15 yrs now. There are a lot of knowledgeble Mavericks fans in Dallas. The difference is, Dallas has 4 major sports franchises including a Dallas Cowboy team that supersedes even the San Antonio Spurs in terms of accomplishments and fan loyalty. In SA, the Spurs is all there is. I've lived here long enough to know that even old generations embrace the Spurs. My girlfriend's really old grandmother even watches the Spurs. U probably won't see a lot of that in Dallas...and I have great respect for SA fans. They have some of the best fans of any franchise. But Dallas too has great fans and love their Dallas Mavericks. I talk to my friends all the time back home and all of them are very knowledgeable fans of the NBA. Some of u guys r just generalizing on a few bars and far too few people. DFW metroplex includes 4 counties of about 1 million a piece in each one. Hence, Dallas is about 4 times the population of SA. How can u really judge the knowledge or the loyalty of Mavericks fans by interacting with a few Dallas natives....I have also lived here(SA) long enough to know that there are more fairweather fans, that don't know shit here than in Dallas due to all the success. Trust me, a lot of people didn't even know that Nazr didn't play last night or that Horry started at center. In my experiences of living in both cities, I have seen very knowledgeable fans and very fairweather, nonintelligent fans from both. It's like that in every city in America. Oh yeah, I can tell u...No Mavs fan that I know r shaking in their boots. Certainly not me. May the beat team win. Go Mavs!
I think it's ridiculous for Mav fans to be cheering for the Kings with their recent history against that franchise (4-1 loss in '02, 4-3 victory in '03, 4-1 loss in '04) and the bad blood that those two teams had up until recently for each other. Especially in a town that hates New York, Philly, and DC fifty-two weeks a year.
Unless you just started watching Dallas basketball last season or this season, I guess.

Most Mav fans aren't cheering for the Kings. They, like me, are cheering for the Spurs because it would be better and more satisfying to play and/or beat the defending world champions. There is only one reason why some are cheering for the Kings. That is because we could get home court next round. Other than that, most of us want to stay in Texas for 2 weeks.
