I didn't think so. That's why I think Carlesimo stays with the Spurs.

PJ says all is forgiven...

I think for a head coaching job PJ will do it. Of course, I don't know what Artest thinks of PJ...

Uh, wait a minute, I was thinking of Sprewell. What did Artest do to PJ again?!?

Yeah I heard that Whisenant (sp?) was the one they really wanted. I don't even think they've interviewed PJ.

San Antonio assistant P.J. Carlesimo would be interviewed, according to a source close to team officials. But Carlesimo, whose Spurs season ended Monday, does not appear to be a leading candidate. If that title belongs to anyone, it still appears to be Monarchs coach John Whisenant.

Gavin Maloof said he would have no reservations hiring a coach such as Whisenant, who won last season's WNBA title with the Monarchs but has no NBA experience.

"We don't care (about perceptions)," Gavin Maloof said. "We have to make our own decision. We can't be concerned with what other people around the league are thinking about.

"Remember one thing: we're on an island. They all want us to lose. They don't want us to win. And the media's the media. We can't listen to the media. (Whisenant) wins. He knows how to win. I don't care if it's (coaching) boys, girls, men, ladies, it doesn't matter. He knows how to win."

Kings owners searching for right coaching candidate

By SAM AMICK
Sacramento Bee
26-MAY-06

What happens in Vegas ... doesn't always stay in Vegas.

The Sacramento Kings finished their secret two-day interview session for a coach Thursday, when Golden State assistant coach Mario Elie gave his pitch to replace former coach Rick Adelman.

Elie, an 11-year veteran as a player who was also an assistant with San Antonio, arrived Thursday afternoon, hours after Memphis assistant and former Golden State Warriors head coach Eric Musselman left town following his Wednesday interview.

Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie said both candidates impressed him and the Maloof family. He also said they are scheduling more interviews, though he wouldn't indicate how many or how soon they would take place.

Petrie declined to discuss Elie and Musselman specifically, seeking fairness in the process and a "level playing field" for the candidates. Asked whether Elie or Musselman would be asked back for a second interview, Petrie said, "That's up to (Kings co-owners) Joe and Gavin (Maloof)," who did not return calls for comment.

"(Musselman and Elie) both were very well-prepared, gave excellent presentations," Petrie said by phone. "They gave ideas about how they would go about coaching based on their backgrounds, and their experience and all of that."

Despite the setting, Petrie said there was no Vegas-style wining and dining. The interview took place at the Maloof-owned Palms Casino Hotel, lasting just two to three hours. He chuckled at the hypothetical notion that showgirls were paraded around the potential Kings coaches, saying, "It's not about (putting on a show) _ it's about the 12 players on the court."

Whether San Antonio assistant P.J. Carlesimo is being courted remains in debate, as sources close to him said Thursday there were no indications an interview had been scheduled. It appears just one candidate is guaranteed an interview, even if he doesn't know it yet.

Monarchs coach and front-runner John Whisenant said after his team's loss Thursday night he has not spoken to the Maloofs or Petrie regarding the opening. Gavin Maloof told The Sacramento Bee on Wednesday that, despite the long family history with Whisenant, an interview would be necessary.

"I know they like me, and I know they think I can coach, but they will decide who they think is best for the Kings," Whisenant said. "There's nothing I can do or say to affect that."

Yet while Petrie and the Maloofs will remain in Las Vegas through the weekend and Whisenant is giving the Monarchs a day off, the coach said he is not meeting with the Kings yet. Whisenant has concerns far more vital than the Kings' opening, as his 85-year-old mother is in intensive care in Muskogee, Okla.

"There are just a lot of factors in this whole scenario, this whole thing, and ... I just have to think about it," he said. "And right now, as you can see, I have a lot to think about."

Asked whether he aspired to coach in the NBA, the man who became a millionaire off the court and in the business world spoke in generalities of his passion for coaching.

"Quite honestly, it's what I've done best in my life. I've built 450 homes, I've built office buildings. ... I've done all kinds of real estate-related partnerships and syndications, but I don't do any of those as well as I coach."

no bad choices? are you talking about very recently like this year? Bonzi and Ron were great pick ups i'd agree with that but signing Webber and Brad Miller to max deals were HUGE mistakes.

no bad choices? are you talking about very recently like this year? Bonzi and Ron were great pick ups i'd agree with that but signing Webber and Brad Miller to max deals were HUGE mistakes.Miller's deal was a mistake. But how can you say Webber was a HUGE mistake? That statement is idiotic. Webber was absolutely amazing before his injury, you have to offer a guy like that a max deal. To not do that would be.......well..........idiotic.
