Sean Marks headed to Phoenix
Wire Reports
Thursday, July 20, 2006
Since losing Tim Thomas to the Clippers the Suns have been actively looking for a big body and it appears that they are about to sign Sean Marks, a 6-foot-10 sharpshooter who last played for the Spurs.
This according to reports from Phoenix, including an article set to appear in Thursday morning's Arizona Republic newspaper.
The Suns, who are still evaluating Amare Stoudemire's comeback, want to make sure they have enough big bodies on the team when the season opens next season.

The Spurs have been searching for a center since Nesterovic was traded to Toronto and Mohammed signed with Detroit. Joel Przybilla re-signed with Portland, and Alonzo Mourning turned down an offer from the Spurs to return to Miami.
Negotiations with Lithuanian Robertas Javtokas, one of the team's former draft picks, broke down last week. Sean Marks, who spent three seasons with the Spurs, has been in contract discussions with Phoenix.

This was a good move for one reason only:
If they would have kept Bonner and Marks. the rest of the team would become distracted. trying to figure out who to make fun of. therefore loosing games and missing the playoffs.
Great move.

Let's be fair. The guy wasn't just a cheerleader. He busted his ass in practice and during training camp to make our big guns better. So, not just a cheerleader - a cheerleader/punching bag combo. :lol

I went to a game in April 2005 when we played the Grizzlies. We were blowing them out and in garbage time someone threw Marks an alley-oop that he threw down hard with two hands. Good stuff. Also, remember after the final buzzer of the 2005 championship when he held up Manu while he was pumping his fist. I'll always remember that one. Good luck Kiwi!

Because he was fairly productive during short stints during the season, I really thought Pop would have "bit the bullet" and used Marks in spot duty to guard Dirk during the WCSF. I thought his length and quickness would have been useful to the team in short situations. Plus he could "shoot the rock so you wouldn't necessarily lose out on offense. Maybe I'm dreaming.

I liked Marks a lot. He did more offensively than Rasho. He had more dunks than Rasho. He attempted more shots than Rasho. Okay, maybe I am over doing it, but everytime he entered the game he was not afraid to put it up or throw it down. He was very agrresive on offense so that should do him well in Phoenix since all they do is play offense.

Once upon a time on the Atlanta Hawks bench there was a player named Boris Diaw. On a similar story, once upon a time the Chicago Bulls waived a player named Tim Thomas. Could Mark become the next "nobody" to shine under the Sun's system?

He was very aggresive on offense because he only got to play in garbage time and then usually only a couple of minutes. No aggression = no shot ops :lol
That said, I think he's got a shot to contribute in Phoenix. I find it amuzing, though, that the original story said they were looking for insurance in case Amare can't come back. If Sean is insurance, he's like a $10K accidental death policy with LOTS of exclusions.

Marks is a decent shooter. I love how when he goes to phoenix, he's automatically a "sharpshooter." The suns definately need more of them. Marks is an all out kind of player though

PHOENIX (AP) -- The Phoenix Suns on Thursday signed free agent Sean Marks to a one-year deal, beefing up the team's frontcourt depth with a veteran player.
Marks, 30, a New Zealand native, spent the last two years with the San Antonio Spurs, where he averaged 3.2 points and 1.7 rebounds in 25 games last season. The Suns will be Marks' fifth NBA team, having previously played for Toronto, Miami and Seattle.
A forward-center with seven years in the league, Marks joins a lineup already flush with international players, including Canadian Steve Nash, Frenchman Boris Diaw, Brazilian Leandro Barbosa, Irishman Pat Burke and Raja Bell, a native of the Virgin Islands.
Terms of the deal were not announced.

Oh, and to refute the vicious rumor that Sean was pissed off at the Spurs:
Excerpt from interview on Suns.com
Suns.com: What is it about the organization the impressed that you?
Marks: I just think they’re style of play on the court, how they get up and down. And the personnel they’ve got here, not only the players. Everyone from the coaching staff all the way down, I’ve heard good things. From my old (Spurs) team, too. “Pop” (Spurs Head Coach Greg Popovich) was telling me how great it was here. I left on good terms there and he said I’m going to have a good time here.

I just talked with Sean's Mum, who confirmed he had a great time in SA, got on well with all the players, coaches and admin staff, and would have been very happy to return. However, the Phoenix offer came at the right time, and there's a chance he could get some PT there. He certainly is NOT pissed off with the Spurs - that is a crazy suggestion.
